I had a great experience when I was not pregnant, however I was disappointed when I was. Everyone is sweet in nature and truly enjoy what they do however having anyone sit at the edge of a massage table to massage lower back is a terrible idea. Pregnant women often have pain in the low back and it's very important to get to this area when the muscles are not contracting to maintain an upright sitting position. Strongly recommend having pregnant women lay on their sides with a pregnancy pillow $60 dollar investment IF you are going to market to pregnant women. Unfortunately each time I trial a new masseuse it's another $120 down the drain. I have to wait and save money to try another one. Loved the website, the convenience of online booking and the front desk employee was super sweet. The initial appointment was great and I walked out of there feeling so much better. However, I returned 2 more times and although I paid for a "back-2-back" appointment (1 hour) Dr. Betty treated me for 35-40 mins max. ATTENTION: Long post ahead! Skip to last four paragraphs if you're looking for the meat of my review. This is a long overdue and much deserved 5-star review for Dr. Betty and the whole Back Benders team. In 2018, lower back tightness I had been nursing with the help of physical therapy exercises evolved into unbearable pain that I can only describe as akin to being lit on fire while simultaneously having someone tie my muscles in knots. It was terrible to say the least. After a much dreaded trip to the ER in May 2018 I was assigned a back doctor who sent me off with an appointment for an MRI and a few muscle relaxants. The MRI demonstrated that I did have a herniated disc at the L4, L5 region of my spine. With this information, my back doctor assigned me to another PT and prescribed a few more muscle relaxants. That summer I continued to go to my newly assigned PT who believed that the root of my pain was also from an irritated piriformis. However, despite being diligent about my exercises (my partner can attest to this), my pain persisted. Short walks became unbearable; sitting at my computer at work was torture; and even sleeping provided no comfort as the pain kept me up night after night. While I did attempt to see two different chiropractors, their "push through the pain" attitudes made me believe that chiropractic just wasn't for me. It was in November 2018 that I had one of my worst pain episodes which landed me in the ER once again. It was at this time that I hit a wall. All my doctors at Kaiser could do was prescribe me pain meds that I had no interest in taking. By the good grace of the universe, it was after this episode that I remembered my friend had been through some back pain and had seen a chiropractor. Upon her recommendation, I immediately made an appointment at Back Benders with Dr. B. It was the last week of November 2018 when I limped into Dr. B's office. I was tense, in pain, emotionally a wreck, and quite literally twisted (the way I was holding my body had led to my left hip protruding out unnaturally). I sat down with Dr. B and instantly burst into tears as I attempted to give her information on why I was seeking out her help. That day, she provided some gentle adjustments and sent me on my way with some stretches and advice that I could apply at home before seeing her again that week. That day, I left with some hope that living in pain didn't have to be my new normal. It's now been almost a year since I started seeing Dr. B and I can wholeheartedly say that I feel better inside and more empowered by my own body than I have in a long time. After months of losing hope that I would lose the ability to be active in my own life, I'm swimming, hiking, walking to work, biking, etc.. I'm engaged in some of my favorite activities that I was in fear of losing forever. From Dr. Betty's gentle and intuitive chiropractic sessions complete with trigger point and tuning forks, to Dena, Mary Frances' and Heather's skillful massage work, to Chi's attentive Pilates instruction, I value each and every minute I get to spend at the Back Benders studio. It's truly a sanctuary for my mind and body. Dr. B and the magical team of women that she has assembled have quite literally and figuratively helped me put my body and life back together. I'm filled with so much gratitude that Back Benders is now a regular part of my life. I got into another hit-and-run exactly one year later, and on both occasions, Dr. B and her amazing team has set me up for healing! went here because I've had a tension headache for the past 2.5 weeks and the Yelp reviews seemed decent, not to mention it's close to home. I booked on line which I really liked and choose my price. Got to my appt, wait time wasn't too bad and got adjusted. When it came time to pay my $45 went to $75! Ok, so I wrote it off as first consult though I just wanted to be adjusted. I went back for a follow up 30min massage to work out my neck and shoulder and it was a 25min massage and not nearly deep enough to work out my kinks. This is not LA. That is, Dr. Sean's practice isn't very "LA." That is, the space isn't fancy, and the staff isn't snooty, and the prices aren't through the roof. I've been working with Dr. Sean on an as-needed basis for 5-6 years, and he's just tops! I was suffering some pretty serious shoulder and hip pain. I'd been x-rayed and MRI'd within an inch of my life and diagnosed with some frightening, old-people afflictions with big, scary names (I'm in my 30s) by a joint specialist (And when I say specialist, I mean $pecialist). Dr. $$$ then injected me with a bunch of cortisone, which was both expensive and useless. Still in constant pain, I hobbled into Dr. Sean's office ... He gave me a thorough going-over, bent me, stretched me ("Does this hurt? How about this?") and then proceeded to explain how I had a problem with one muscle group that ran from my shoulder to my hip, and THAT was the source of my achy, breaky troubles. His treatment for me was a combination of adjustments and stretches, and he got me solid on my feet in no time! I only go back to him when I get into a pickle (aka when I'm not stretching)! I always adjust more easily after a massage, so it's a drag that his massage therapists aren't my style, but hey, you can't please everyone all the time. And he offers cash deals and packages, which work out way better than the average insurance plan any of us can cough up for these days. And yes, he does run behind. And yes, he is chatty. But if the worst thing you can say about your doctor is that he's too attentive and too thorough, well ... This is LA. read more

Oh man, why don't I go here more often? Dr. B saves me every time. She is so incredibly intuitive, and knows how to address complicated issues in a way I really haven't experienced with other chiro professionals. It's so much more than a couple cracks and you're done. She uses acupressure and electrical stimulation with a tailored, compassionate approach which is incredibly refreshing and helpful. Although I look forward to a time when I don't have needs which require making an appointment, Dr. B makes the process painless and is thoroughly encouraging. Maybe if I followed her exercise and stretch guidelines more seriously, I'd be cured! Sallianne at the front desk is also the biggest sweet pea in the game, and I really value the experience of coming here Saturday mornings when I can. Although there are no cocktails served, she offers a discount for the services offered at this office. It is so creative and fun, you can't get mad there aren't chicken wings or beers on tap. If it wasn't for Dr. Betty and her team, I'd be stuck in bed day-after-day doped up on the multitude of pain killers all the other doctors gave me. My friend and I got into a car accident at the end of Jan. We were rear ended and had severe back and neck whip lash. I'm sooo glad we found Backbenders. They are a one stop shop. Chiro, massage and pilates all in one spot! There is always parking and the location is amazing, with a Trader Joes across the street. After appointments I can get my grocery shopping done. Very convenient. We started going to Dr. B for chiro and adjustments. It really helped. Dr. Betty knows what she's doing.. I have a little baby and Dr. B even let me bring the baby with me so I could get a quick adjustment. Vanessa, the receptionist held the baby while I was with Dr. B. Vanessa is really sweet and always greets us with a smile. Lulu has been giving us massages and teaching us pilates. She's great at both things. Her massages really helped my back and neck. I can only apologize for not writing this review sooner. Dr. Sean and the entire staff and Backbenders are the kindest, most helpful, most honest, most logical people I have ever met. I have been to several places for massages in LA but none has been as transformative as the work I received here. My most recent experience was going to see Dr. Sean and Jacob. I have two, not one but two, ear infections. I have been to UCLA, I went to the Emergency Room yesterday in so much pain and they gave me new ear drops and vicodine. Nothing helped. I walked into the office today, sobbing. The women at the phone is always so nice to me but today she was so sympathetic. Dr. Sean rubbed arnica and some Chinese medicine and did some cracking and popping of my neck. He then sent me over to Jacob who did an acupressure massage on my lymph nodes and face. Huge difference! I haven't eaten anything in 3 days and I am eating! My ears are still clogged but I feel dramatically better. The other issue they helped me with my right shoulder did this clicking popping nonsense. An old sports injury which I then added waitressing, bartending, cocktailing and teaching to just torture it. I thought my life would always have a bit of pain to it. But after 2 sessions with Dr. Sean and a massage with David and one with Jacob (months later) I have no pain in my shoulder. I like the massage where people tear your flesh off your bones and put it back. I know, vulgar, but rare to find and David and Jacob hooked it up. Jacob is the first massuse that I almost "tapped out" of his massage. After that, I felt my shoulder move on its own back to place. I appreciate that everyone there will explain to you what they are doing and why and that they offer yoga and pilates classes. A lifestyle of change. Personally, my health insurance covers a portion of my sessions but they always have specials and are willing to to work with you. I cannot say anything but good about Backbenders. read more

Enjoy the massages here. Have seen 2 of the different therapists and have gotten great massages! They really know how to work out the kinks. They are also very reasonably priced. I would have given 5 stars but the atmosphere is lacking a bit. I can hear other people outside the door during the massage a lot. It's a small place and the massage room is enclosed but the wall leaves about a foot space open. Maybe they should play a relaxation CD to buffer out the additional sound. Anyways I will still go.
