Absolutely terrible. I will not be going to Back Bay Spa ever again and do not recommend it all. I was looking for a place that took walk-ins, which they do - which I appreciated. The masseuse did not speak any English at all, I tried to communicate with her, but she kept saying "no English". I was in terrible pain after the massage, and for 3 days afterwards (upper and lower back, shoulders, neck, thighs, arms) - hence the massage likely just made my aches and pains worse. I did not leave relaxed. This is not normal. To be honest, I don't know if she is professionally trained. Also, when I paid (cash) and gave a 20% tip, the masseuse looked very disappointed, as if it was not enough. I came in here while in town and having random "I'm in my 30s and slept funny and now can barely turn my neck" pain. Jerry gave me an hour long massage and it was awesome. I hate when you tell a masseur "XYZ hurts, please focus on XYZ".... and they nod and then do whatever they were going to do anyway. He focused on the neck on upper shoulders for probably 40 of the 60 mins and that was exactly what I wanted. Would 100% go back next time I'm in Boston. read more

My friend and I were so excited to come in for the couples massage but left regretting we walked in in the first place. The masseuse who worked on me left me in so much pain that I will probably have to get a massage at a different place to fix what happened at Rainbow Center. We made an appointment at 6, but weren't actually started on until 6:20. Rather than targeting pressure areas and working to relieve knots, the masseuse rubbed my bones extremely hard and made me tense up even more than before I walked in. I was counting down the minutes before the massage would end because I was in so much pain, not because the masseuse wasn't applying enough pressure but because it was in all the wrong places. Anyone can give you a massage, but I suggest going somewhere else and paying a bit more to get a relaxing experience rather than a tense one. I could hear every person walking in and out of the office, every conversation, and my masseuse even left to go handle a customer in the middle of my massage. I would never come back to this place. Super unprofessional. First, my masseur was talking loudly to the front desk while massaging me. Then, she left in the middle of my session to take on a different client who was starting a 90 minutes session, and in came a different masseur who did the second half of my session. There was no communication, no explanation, no consenting on my end. Because of this, I was short about 5 minutes of my massage. That's not it-- at the end, I presented to her my Groupon-- she had the audacity to reject the Groupon by saying I can't use it as it's "for 3pm or earlier only" (which is not true per T&C on the Groupon) and asked me to pay by cash or credit card (5 dollar surcharge for credit card transaction). The negative reviews on Groupon are all true. Extremely unprofessional-- I've never had a session where a different masseur finished the session without any explanation or communication-- and then to reject me using my Groupon. That was pretty much the dialogue for 60 of the 90 minutes of the body massage treatment..... it was total pleasure of pain.... and pain of pleasure... both... either..... all the above... When I lived in Singapore and Hong Kong, I would frequent the numerous reflexology/acupressure/massage studios that lined those cities like 7-Eleven does everywhere in this country. I would either go in for pressure-point foot massages (an EXCRUTIATING experience that tested the boundaries of pain and healing), and the occasional full-body treatment. When I moved back to Boston, I knew this was one of the things I was going to absolutely miss about living in Asia.... .... till I walked by the Rainbow Health Center sign that literally is no more than 100 feet around the corner from where I live (and coincidentally the same block that Tom Brady got into his car acccident 2 weeks ago.... but I digress...). I was in utter pain leaving the gym yesterday (I had NO business trying to impress the girl in skimpy shorts standing next to the bench press).... and when I left, pain was flowing out of my flesh temple like cheese on the Jersey Shore. I've gotten used to the more Spa-oriented establishments in Boston, but I equate them more as relaxation or rejuvenation luxury playgrounds, and this time I figured I really needed to see pain specialists, and at 1/2 the price of normal spas, you're not going to get a better deal in town. My 90-minute session came out to $80, and they have 60-minute and 120-minute sessions as well. Sure there's no jacuzzi or steam room in this typically no-frills place, but nothing has me feeling more "fixed" than these types of reflexology places. I was looking for a quality and cheap massage around the city and found both at the Rainbow Health Center. The place is well-kempt but without the frilly fuss of typical Newbury St. spas, and the service is quick and efficient. We were able to make an appointment for two just an hour or two ahead of time. I'm used to the style of Chinese massages but if you aren't, just note (as many of the other reviewers did) that the masseurs/masseuses go straight to the point and give a quality deep tissue massage. It might be more intense than what you'd experience at most Westernized places, but it was needed to relax all the knots and aches in my back. If you get the massage, they do full body (back, legs, arms) plus head and neck. One note: if you don't like massage oil residue getting on your clothes, I would recommend wearing clothing you wouldn't mind washing afterward. read more

Found this place on Groupon but after reading some reviews decided that it would be best to forgo the Groupon and just go in person. Went for a couples massage for my partners birthday and he really enjoyed it. I however had a 3 star experience. I understand that COVID might impact things like amenities and slight comfort with having to keep a mask on etc. (I do NOT mind those things at all!) But that said, for a first massage and a place that has pretty stellar reviews, this was underwhelming. A man and a woman came in, didn't really say much, there was no explanation of services or talking at all really (except to tell us that our heads were on the wrong side of the table, oops our bad). But really I feel like I paid $150 ($130+ tip) for something that I could have had my partner do at home. It was very light and general massage when we were there for deep tissue with hot stone. They did bring out hot stones, which were nice, but again it was like 30 seconds of warmth brushed on your back. My advice- maybe chat with the masseuse before hand about what areas you'd like to focus on. And if you can request the woman, I would suggest that. Anyway, not a bad way to spend 50 mins on a rainy day. Just be aware that not all of the masseuses are equally talented and you may leave feeling slightly disappointed haha. read more

My first time at Rainbow Health Spa was nothing special. Besides for the fact that they messed up the timing, once it came time for the massage, it was a decent experience. You can hear people shuffling around outside the room- a bit of a mood kill. but this was a groupon, and I wasn't expecting the most luxury experience. My friend, however, had a great experience, and so I figured I'd go back and hope to get a better masseuse. I went to the Backbay location, and my god, I'm still recovering for the deep tissue massage. My masseuse legitimately 'massaged' my bones. She cracked my spine multiple times, traced my spine down with her elbow-painful, to say the least. I told her multiple times that she was hurting me, and that she should go more gently, but she didn't understand me/she thought her way is the only way. I remember thinking 'when will this be over'. I've been taking Tylenol to help with the back pain, and three days later my back is still achy and sore. I called to complain, but they quickly said their manager is out of the country for another 3 weeks. Help. Note: While I am never going back there. If you do go, first of all, don't use my masseuse, and second, take note that there is a language barrier, and you should call at least twice to confirm your time. The first time I went, they only had one masseuse available when we specifically made an advance appointment for 2 concurrent massages. I come here twice per week and usually my experience is great despite them pulling a bait and switch with the big difference between cash vs credit prices . Today my bf and I came for a couples massage- as we were checking it we noticed a lady with a frequent customer card - where you get 6 massages and get the 7th free. When I asked about the customer card I was denied because we were getting the "cash price" even though the other customer got the cash price as well. I looked up foot reflexology on Yelp and found Rainbow Health Center one and-a half blocks from Hotel. After a day of sightseeing and going to museums my feet were sore and I thought a foot massage would be nice. So I dropped in on a Wednesday afternoon about 4:00 pm. Asked if anyone could give me a foot massage. Yes! , I was told. A therapist named Tina gave me the best massage. First Ina private room I removed my jeans and shoes and socks and put on a fluffy white robe. Tina came in with a basin of hot water. Even though her English was limited I could understand what she wanted me to do. I stepped into the tub of warm water and sat down on the bench. She proceeded to give me a fantastic back, neck and shoulder massage. After that I stepped out sat in a comfy chair while she adjusted pillows made a neck roll to support my head. Then proceeded to give me one of the best foot leg massages I have ever had. Not to hard, but not to soft. It lasted an hour. My feet any myself were so relaxed and happy. Ready to tour Boston again. I am 100% sure I left them there as I have photos with them on just before the massage and with them off just after.
