So after 2 year(wtf) and a very long guilt trip, my hubby finally decided to dust off the brew kit I'd gotten him for his birthday. He's a beer snob but first time brewer so we headed to the first place we googled. Bacchus & Barleycorn. Immediately upon entering, I was hypnotized by all of the wonderful smells that led me around this locally owned store. WoW. I don't even drink beer but this place could change my mind. FYI they also carry a vast amount of diy wine making ingredients for all my fellow wino's out there..but back to the beer. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful for us first timers. It just happened to be near closing time so we plan to go back and take our time. I hate to hold any place up that is near closing time. 4 stars based on kinda high prices compared to online prices. If they don't have it, they'll get it for you. I love that they have a retail along with catalog options. The staff is really helpful with any questions and helping you find just what you are looking for. I'd tried Kraus Brewing Supply in Independence previously, but they are almost exclusively catalog base and the lack of retail was disappointing. At Bacchus, we found all the home brewing equipment we needed. Also, they had extensive wine making gear along and some unique home-cooking equipment like homemade cheese kits. They were very busy on a Saturday when we went, but the 15 minute wait was worth it since we'd actually found what we'd been looking for. read more

Barley, Hops, yeast and water are the four things needed to create Beer. Bacchus & Barleycorn has what you need for all of those needs! I had a recipe for an IPA I was needing to fill so I handed it over to the guy working. The grain, hops and yeast are all behind the counter. Too be honest I prefer this especially when it comes to handling the grain. We had to make a couple substitutions to my grain bill mainly because my choices were specific brands and they carried a different brand (no big deal). The clerk helped explain the differences and made this process easy. I had a couple other misc things on my list as well so I searched for those while he prepared and milled my grain. The store is neat, clean but a little scattered on organization. This isn't a terrible problem, I am just saying they have a lot of stuff and they probably have what you are looking for, but asking where it is will save you time searching. I was able to find the couple things I needed and found a few things I have now added to my wish list. Prices are pretty average. I compared to Northern Brewer.com when I got home and the same stuff there would have saved me a couple bucks but to me it is important to support your local businesses. They do offer a Bacchus Bucks card, if you spend $200 (within a year) they will give you $20 back. Really if you brew four or five beers a year then this should be easy enough to achieve. As I continue to explore homebrew stores in the KC area this one is so far the best (I will report back if I find better) and will probably be tough to beat! read more

I've been going to Bacchus and Barleycorn for more than a decade, and they do a good job of helping you make great beer. If you need advice, Alberta is a tremendous resource. I appreciate the fact that they measure out exactly the grain you need - no need to buy a half pound of roasted barley when you just want an ounce or two. They have a good selection of Wyeast yeasts, and an equally good selection ofhops, in flowers and in pellets. It is true that much of their stock can be sourced online a bit cheaper, but nothing beats the convenience of a local store with knowledgable staff and shelves stocked with items you might need at the last minute. read more

So now that I have a new house with more space, it's time to finally start brewing. I went in to get an idea of my needs and my budget. The place is a bit run down, but has a good selection. The staff were also very friendly and helped me out immediately, telling me what I needed and offering several starter sets ranging from $80 to $200. She said the $150 set was the most common, and probably what I would choose. They have several pre-measured beer recipes for between $50 and $75 - stouts, porters, scottish ales, brown ales, etc. etc. Definitely good for a first timer before you start getting your craft down and making your own recipes. But they do have all of the individual ingredients for the more experienced brewers. I understand prices may be a bit high and will compare elsewhere before I purchase. But, the service was good and the selection seemed good as well. read more

I'm in the process of making beer for the first time. I found that I needed a capper. I went to Bacchus and Barleycorn. They had exactly what I needed. They also made very helpful suggestions, including options to the standard capping supplies. Since this is my first experience at beer making, I can't tell you that they have everything that you could possibly need, but they did have everything that I needed and more. The staff was very knowledgeable and more than willing to assist. The store is not fancy shmancy, it's beer, not diamond tiaras. I needed availability and experience, and they delivered. Richard D's review pretty much sums up my feelings about Bacchus. But I am going to knock a star off their rating specifically for their antiquated register and receipt system. That register looks like it would have been hopelessly out of date in 1989. And the receipt doesn't even list a description of what you purchased, only the amounts. I have been going here probably about 10 years now. I've been making wine for over 40 years (since i was in high school) and this place has pretty much everything I need. They are a bit pricey sometimes but, it's convenient to me here than to drive all over creation looking for what I need or sending off for something without knowing what quality to expect. I purchase stuff here too for my beer-making brother and I highly recommend this establishment. They are friendly and very helpful. They also have a "frequent flyer" card that you can get a discount with, after you've had all the little symbols punched out. I think each one is $5 worth of your purchase. read more

This is THE place to go to get any of your kegerator or wine making things. DON'T go online! You'll pay more. If you go here, they will help you with all your unforeseen problems. Been going to B&B for over 20 years. A lot of home brew stores have come and gone in that period of time, but B&B has remains steadfast. They offer quality ingredients at good prices. The staff is very helpful too. I also like how they have expanded into wine, cheese, cider, and vinegar making. They also have some basic ingredients for alternative alcohol products, if you know what you are looking for. I am not sure why some of these reviews are complaining about high prices. Most of their base malts range from $1 to $1.50 per pound. Northern Brewer charges $1.80 to $2 for the same malt + shipping. read more

I have been to this place twice with the same negative experience. Because of my schedule I went on Thursday nights. With my first experience the store clerk was rushed and didn't seem to care that I might spend a few hundred dollars on a home brew kit. I inquired about all grain equipment and she immediately attacked my ability to brew all grain. I explained that even though I was just starting out that I intended to eventually move to all grain. She quickly got a book and showed me how difficult it is and went on and on about how hard it is to brew all grain. After my first experience I purchased all of my equipment on-line. However, there were a few things I needed to pick up that I had forgotten to order. I stopped in and found the prices here to be exorbitant. A ball valve sells on-line for $29.00 and here it sells for $57.00. Some beer recipe kits are nearly twice the on-line price. Even with shipping I am ahead. I would pay a little more to support local business, but not this much more. Especially given the poor service. read more

Hate to be a debbie downer but I am not a fan of B&B for the following reasons. 1. The old lady is a pretentious snob. If you are looking to enjoy the hobby of brewing, she will make you feel dumb and hate it. she reminds me of the IT guy Jimmy Fallon played on SNL. Several times she told me if i do things a certian way, it will ruin everything, and everytime, i sat back and drank a fantastic beer. Its her way or the highway. Lame. And its a lot more expensive here. Their kits are 2x as much as other places. Here's how much disdain i have, I literally live 4 blocks from there, and I will drive 35 minutes to APEX brew wares to buy my stuff there. (See my review on APEX) Hey lady, i know you are super smart, but dont be so obnoxious, even your son who works there apologizes under his breath about your snootyness. This place is amazing! Nothing too fancy but is definitely equipped with everything you could possibly want or need to brew beer or wine. The woman who was working was absolutely wonderful to us, helping us select a new beer brewing kit and explaining anything that we had questions about in detail. I really valued her opinion as she seems very experienced. A couple weeks later we even received a postcard in the mail thanking us for our business and telling us to call her if we ever had any questions. Now that's what I call SERVICE! :) read more
