I'm surprised to see such low reviews for this place. Super cute interior. Welcoming staff. My bartender Amy was extremely attentive, quick on refills and checking on me periodically. I waited til 1PM on Sunday to be able to try their prime rib Sunday special. It was worth the wait. Super delicious. It was over cooked from what I asked, but all in all still very good and a hearty portion.

The Roserita was yummmy, tart, and delicious! Great, dog friendly patio. Food looked delicious!

We decided to do a Saturday in Lawrence and chose Black Stag for lunch. Oops! Our mistake! It was borderline sad. There was an away basketball game so Mass Street was pretty busy. But walking into Black Stag, you'd think they were on the cusp of closing their doors. In the entire place, there were 4 people at the bar, and us. . The food was ok. We had a French Dip and a Philly Cheese Steak. Both were very dry. I had to borrow au jus sauce from across the table to moisten my sandwich. The only bright spot was our server. She was great and I felt kind of bad for her. You could tell she had the server passion you want in a server. The beer was OK, but not anything memorable. We went across the street to Free State afterward and it was standing room only and full of KU fans watching the Jayhawks win.

It was a Friday at 5:00, so we decided to do dinner and a show. In the past the Black Stag had a decent Happy Hour, so we decided to go there. We were waited on immediately by a server named, Chris. I ordered an India Pale Lager and the Happy Hour Nachos. The Menu said that all pints were $3. We then decided to also order the Gluten Free Shrimp Scampi Cabanera. We had the Cajun Shrimp Pasta a couple of weeks earlier and it was fabulous. The beer was excellent and the Nachos came out in about 5 minutes. The nachos were obviously made with grocery store materials. The jalapenos were more of a relish and the cheese was canned liquid cheese. When our Nachos were done, they removed our dirty plates, I had no silverware. When taking away our plates the server asked if I wanted another beer. I asked if the India Pale Lager is on Happy Hour. He said no. I asked which ones were on Happy Hour and he said that Happy Hour had ended. I looked at my iPhone and it said 5:48. I said, its still short of 6:00 and he said, it was 6:00 on "bar time so Happy Hour ended." Our Scampi came out about 15 minutes later and our server had warned us that the Gluten Free pasta takes a bit longer. It was totally delicious except it needed a little salt for our taste. Our server asked if we had everything we needed and asked, "you got silverware? Good." Then disappeared immediately. And I mean IMMEDIATELY. So I grabbed silverware from another table. It was a scarcely attended restaurant, so this was not hard to do. After a few bites, we decided to get some salt hoping that our server would come by to check on us. After 5 minutes, I decided to walk the restaurant to find some salt, but there was no server or bartender to be found. So I found some salt and pepper at a table near the patio. It wasn't until we had completely finished our meal that our server returned from never never land to ask if we needed anything. We said no and he handed us our bill in lightening quick fashion. I wonder whether our server secretly is a shareholder in the Free State Brewery across the street and he is trying to chase people over there. Well, he succeeded with us. So the bottom line is this. The Happy Hour is a ruse. There really isn't one. The pints are regular price and the Happy Hour food is Meh. But the Gluten Free pasta is really good. So if you are a Gluten Free eater, come for the pasta, but don't expect good service.

Came here on a Sunday afternoon. Great beer and patio. Bartender was nice and helpful!

    Happy Friday to me!

Gawd, I wish they had half-stars to award, because my initial stop-in to Black Stag was simply to kill an hour between kid activities. Add in the fact that I was doing so with *beer* and you can calculate my parenting levels. Black Stag has a sensational build-out, accented by their ever-present brewing vats along the south wall. A smallish square bar occupies the middle of the floor, which is probably enough acreage to dedicate to an actual bar within the brewpub. They even have the recently closed Ernst & Son hardware signage hanging to give it a townie vibe. The beer ranged from the usual wheat brew (a clean and mildly malty Helles) to an IPA (I sampled the 7 mile and there's a reason I don't go hoppy) to an excellent porter (with a blackberry kick - interesting yet robust). My impression of the beer was 4+ stars, and our server Eric (also working towards his cicerone certification) mentioned that they intend to have up to 16 brews, up from their initial 8 or so. Bottom line: if you're into beer, then you have a damn good option with Black Stag. It was a 5:00 visit, so we only sampled an easy shareable, so the board of fare will get updated on a return visit. But I was hitting a brewpub for the BEER, and for that, closer to five stars is well placed. That's the reason I wish half-stars could be awarded in a review, because I don't have any input for the food, so 5 for beer is fine, but the menu has some very interesting options, even a rabbit stew! I'll be back, and soon - one can always enjoy new beer places.

Came for the first time with my boyfriends and his family, overall very disappointing experience. Got there and after being sat waited 10 minutes till our waitress finally came over and acknowledged us, ordered our drinks 2 cokes and 2 beers, cokes took about 7 minutes and the beers took about 15 minutes, our server never came to check to see if we liked the beer, we didn't like one of them and that wasn't taken off our bill. Once we realized how long the service was taking we decided to order our appetizer and entrees at the same time so we wouldn't have to wait very long. Appetizer (crab cakes) came out at a good time we were all pleased, then we proceed to wait an hour for our food to come out, our server (Emma C) rarely came to check on us we had to flag her down for a drink refill which those still took awhile to get to us. When we finally got our food it was cold maybe room temp and that's being generous. I personally work at a restaurant and I was applaud at this entire experience. We were all very disappointed as we had heard good things about Black Stag. I would also like to preface that it was not busy for this kind of service.

First time. So I am giving our experience the 5 Star first impression. Today is game day, so naturally, we wanted to eat in Lawrence for our visit. We got in and greeted efficiently. Prompt server at a time when they were beginning to get a rush. We got the wings to start, with fish & chips + the Cuban for our entree. All of the food was excellent. Drinks were consistently full, and could get our payment effectively and timely. They honestly hit all of the right points for a first-time guest. For sure will be back! RCJH!

The board will list the ABV for each beer, as well as the pour prices, and you can choose from anything between lighter ales to heavier stouts. I prefer the darker stuff and really love their 'Train in Vain', a brown ale with fabulous body. Don't miss their fresh-hopped varietals, such as the recent 'Earth & Sky', which gives you that right-off-the-trellis hoppiness.
