Service was a bit slow, and we were disappointed to find they were out of barbecue for the day. However, the food overall was good (albeit pricey), and the beer was excellent. I had the fish and chips with a side of creamed spinach and it was flavorful. Others at my table enjoyed the fettuccine Alfredo, wings, and burgers. I appreciate that the server provided a free dessert after spilling a water on one of our diners. Overall, I would return, though I have some qualms after reading some other reviews, particularly relating to hygiene.

The chicken however was like rubber. I ate half a small piece and put the rest to the side. My husband had the Pulled Pork platter which is normally good. The meat was really dry. I ate all the pasta and told our server about the chicken being like rubber and she stated that she's mentioned that exact thing to the cooks but that maybe if a customer complains they would possibly listen. What made me a little annoyed though was that I ate none of the chicken yet they didn't at least bump off a few bucks off my meal. The service was fine but I feel like over the years this has become my last choice versus my first choice.

Big emphasis here on cocktails. Elizabeth put together a stunning Cosmo ($10!) for my wife. food: My wife's half Baja Turkey and soup-of-the-day, Chicken Noodle, with chips ($12) was outstanding. My half Not Your Mama's BLT and tomato bisque with chips (also $12) was equally fantastic. details: This is a relatively small restaurant with choice of inside, outside, and bar seating. The one question I have is why is it called The Wheel Barrel? I know a wheelbarrow, a wheel of cheese, a wine barrel, but I haven't figured out the name yet. If I make it back, maybe I can ask. The Wheel Barrel serves grill cheese/sandwiches and soup. I appreciate the concept and in this situation keeping it rather simple yet with some good selection for sandwiches and soup. I got a special wild rice and chicken soup with a half Baja turkey sandwich. It's a half and half for $12. I thought both tasted very good. I didn't eat quite all of it but I'd say it is a normal meal. Not a huge serving. I think most people would eat this in one meal. I think if I'm back in Topeka, I'll have to go back and do the traditional grilled cheese and tomato bisque! It was a busy lunch time meal. A nice size crowd was there. Service was still pretty quick. They have a rustic decor which is sort of like a wheelbarrow and a barrel. It's on a block that seems to be trying to add some art and culture to Topeka and I appreciate that a lot! If I'm back over that way, I'll stop back in and if definitely recommend it in Topeka.

When the server, Jordan, approached the table, there was no introduction or genuine interaction--just a brief, "What can I get you?" She took my drink order and dropped it off. She did not return for approximately 10-15 minutes. By the time she came back, I had already finished my beer, and only then was I asked if I was ready to order food. Being in the food service industry, I know good service is more than simply taking an order and delivering it. Guests should feel acknowledged, welcomed, and attended to throughout their experience. Unfortunately, that was not the case during my visit. I strongly recommend reviewing your service standards and providing additional training to your staff on guest engagement, attentiveness, and basic hospitality. The lack of interaction and attention made what should have been an enjoyable visit a very disappointing one. Hindsight, I should have read the reviews prior to my visit.

Their beer list covers most styles and has something for everyone. We saw a handful of cocktails going out and they all looked well made. food: Restaurant was on brunch menu; however, there are plenty of traditional lunch offerings. The standard breakfast fare looks wide-ranging and pretty awesome. I went with High Rail Burger - which is supposed to be a double smash burger - and fries ($13 as of 08/2026). It wasn't a typical, griddled, thin, lacey-edge smash burger, but it was still a very solid offering. Extra credit for excellent fries. My wife chose a half order of biscuits and gravy ($3!
