A bunch of us tried some of the food offerings over at the new San Luis Ranch Market the other day. It was raining, so we all sat inside where there was a lounge area as well as both regular tables and high-level tables. We shared the food, and discovered a lot of new additions to the SLO area cuisine. Two of my friends got the biscuits from Baby Bear Biscuits. One got the bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado on a biscuit and the other got gravy and biscuits. I got to taste some of the BLT and it was delicious. It also had that full rich flavor of the biscuit to kind of pump up the volume. It's huge, like four biscuits in one, so the servings are very large. We had fun dining inside, but it is kind of a food court experience. Don't expect tablecloths or service. You have to walk over to each vendor and order what you want, and then basically get it as takeout to take to your table. Always fun to try new things and we left with lots of new dining options.

Last time I was I the SLO Ranch Farms and Marketplace was at the March 21 "soft opening" event for several of the restaurant establishments there in. That was quite an event and one of the restaurants, Baby Bear Biscuits, was more than intriguing and so a return trip was planned. Recently we made the trip and had another opportunity to not only to converse with Chef Norwood Pryor regarding his dedication of farm to table fare but to order several dishes from his Menu. From the moment we stepped up to order to our departure...all staff were helpful, friendly and attentive. The ambiance/atmosphere was as first experienced at the "soft opening" ...pleasant and airy, with a good buzz and plenty of available seating. Our order consisted of Appetizers: Fried Green Tomatoes (3/5 - not as "stunning" as I expected (crust was "soft", not "crisp" like I prefer)...but better for some reason as leftovers in the following days at home). Sandwiches: Fried Chicken Sandwich (5/5 - WOW...give this one a try, it's down right delicious!) and from the Special Plates: Shrimp and Grits (5/5 - Fabulous presentation and really yummy!) The portions served are more than plentiful so plan on taking some of your meal home ("the value factor"). After our meal Chef came out to thank us for returning...perhaps he remembered my Stetson hat from our first meeting. What stood out from our conversation was his "passion" for his craft. He was completely engaging, and invited us to return soon. Thank-you Chef! We enjoyed our dining experience with Baby Bear Biscuits in the SLO Ranch Farms and Marketplace and on this occasion, in this Yelper's opinion...Baby Bear Biscuits earned this definite "recommend" 4 Star review.

Biscuit with ham, egg, bacon, and bacon jam

I went to Baby Bear Biscuits a couple of times when I was in SLO. The first day, I got the biscuit with ham, bacon, and bacon jam. It was really amazing, full of flavor, and more like a meal than just a biscuit sandwich. When I came back, I ordered the biscuit with the fried green tomatoes, and it was really delicious. I liked how it was a little bit lighter and very fresh. Though neither biscuit really seemed possible for me to pick up and eat, I had to use a knife and fork for both of them. Food was made to order and very fresh. I agree with what others have said that the service is slow, and the staff don't seem very friendly or welcoming. When you walk up, they don't even look up. We did get acknowledged with a gruff "in a minute" on the second visit. Also, it does seem to take a bit of time for the food to come out. I appreciate that it was made fresh to order.

I was surprised to see the reviews on this establishment, I would say one of the best fried chickens for the area. Even better customer service. The employee who took our order forgot about our order, when we asked how much longer she apologized and found out where we were seated outside and gave us a huge red velvet cake for free. You rarely see that type of customer service these days. Additionally, she brought our food out to us when it was ready, I'm not sure if they always do that but out of the the restaurants there they were the only ones to do that. Now to the chicken, extremely fresh, moist, and breading was crunchy. I wish they had some sort of hot sauce. The Mac and cheese was great as well but chicken was the star of the show. We did not choose to sit inside but the area looked clean and would sit there if it wasn't a nice day outside.

As welcoming as the name sounds, they didn't have a very friendly staff, but at least the food was great. The lady taking orders seemed very rush even though we were the only ones in line, it felt like "order your food and leave" kind of vibe. I ordered the pancakes with cinnamon and strawberries, not sure what it was called, but it was delicious. They gave me my food with no syrup or anything so it was dry at first, so I had to go back and get some. They had a weird mix of wooden utensils and metal utensils (for example they had metal forks but were out of metal spoons, so they had some wooden ones out). This kinda surprised me that they were out of utensils since I was there shortly after they opened. I would probably go back since I enjoyed slo ranch farms, but if there were other brunch options, I'd definitely like to try that out.

Great location. Great food, and fantastic staff. The Chicken sandwich was Delicious, perfectly fried. Fried Green tomatoes had the perfect sauce paring. There were a generous portion of shrimp. The Grits were a bit watered down for my taste although tasted very good.

BLTA biscuit

Three of us dined here for our monthly (or so) breakfast today and it was outstanding. Yes, there was a wait. Yes, it was well worth it. Delicious BLTA biscuit for me. Seemed like close to a third pound of bacon, generous portion of avocado, the arugula was dressed with a zesty buttermilk dressing that compliments the richness of the dish and the pickled onion finished it off for a perfectly balanced dish. Pickled okra on the side was a nice add. The biscuit was outstanding. Portion was huge. The chef/owner stopped by to say hi and we had a great chat hearing about his ending up here from NC. Such a wonderful man and so great to hear how involved he is giving back to the community besides providing scrumptious elevated southern food to San Luis. I would try anything on his menu. We will be back for lunch and dinner. I have my eye on the fried chicken and the smashburger (my favorite thing to eat ever.) My friend was stoked to find out she could order wings for breakfast. Thanks, chef. Glad you're here

Really enjoyed this cute little place. The owner was there taking orders and also cooking in the back. He was extremely friendly and was happy to answer. Any questions about the menu. I got three individual biscuits all plain for my husband and I got a biscuit breakfast sandwich. All of it was fabulous and I love that it was fresh and made to order. The biscuits were fluffy. The egg was prepared well and my husband enjoyed the plain biscuits with just a little butter on them.

Planned on trying the biscuits but their special sounded too good to pass up, it was! The portions are huge here, everyone in my party had left overs to take home. The chef is from South Carolina and the authenticity shows. I haven't had southern food that is better anywhere in California.

I have visited Baby Bear Biscuits three times, and I loved it every time! I buy the breakfast sandwich, egg, cheese, bacon on those wonderful, amazing biscuits! It's consistently superb, with the right amount of each topping. It's also much bigger than the average breakfast sandwich at any fast food place. Service is very friendly; the owner is generally onsite and he clearly wants happy customers. It takes a little extra time because they are cooking to order, so maybe plan to spend a few minutes waiting. It'll be worth it. Their beverages are bottled; no fountain drinks. Seating is wide open, both inside and outside.

BLTA with two added eggs fed my husband and I.
Kimberly H.

The BLTA with 2 fried eggs was delicious! It fed both my husband and I. I even tried the pickled okra and enjoyed it. Come early to watch biscuits being made. This one's a keeper! Great classic rock playing in the marketplace. The customer service was great (and I'm pretty picky about customer service!)

I'm not very familiar with southern food so I guess my palate may not be refined for it or whatever, but this is genuinely delicious food for a good price.

BTCC emphatically recreates that culinary experience with a solid menu of creole style dishes. New owner? No worries! Grits, jambalaya, Poboys, fresh homemade cornbread, sweet tea and lemonade, the offerings are all perfectly seasoned, flavorful and delicious. My favorites? The crawfish etouffee, the muffaletta sandwich (for sharing) and any breakfast omelette. Fancy? No. affordable? Yes! We ordered the famous tri-tip sandwich, the Firebird, and a half-and-half basket of fries and onion rings. To be honest, we were both a little disappointed by the tri-tip sandwich. The Firebird, on the other hand, was unexpectedly delicious. Seriously, just get them. We had not planned to order them, but the cashier convinced us and guaranteed we would not regret it--and he was absolutely right. Menu wish did looked good but we only stick to a cocktail and some beer. Service was great and the staffs were friendly. It's was still a little early so the place wasn't that busy. After finding 4 other options, all the others cared about was: which one is closest and which has the highest stars? Ultimately I picked the one that had the most variety. My brother-in-laws kids are very picky. Like, pizza and chicken nuggets are all they really eat. And my in-laws are picky in the other direction. They like nices restaurants and my father-in-law likes to critique other people's cooking, especially BBQ. Anyways, as we are walking up, you can tell very quickly that this is a fairly fancy restaurant. In fact, if it was warmer outside, we would have opted to sit beside the fire. It kind of made me wish we had come here at lunch to take advantage of the beautiful view. If I have the opportunity to come again, I'll definitely try to plan it around lunch. I think my wife was expecting the worse initially because she stood at the front waiting to be helped. Meanwhile, I took my son to the restroom and came back while she continued to wait. Not a minute later, we get greeted and we put in our group. I think she took that personally. We were kind of a large group. 11 in total. Still, the wait was less than 5 minutes. Soon we were ordering drinks and appetizers. The elote corn, guacamole and chips caught my eye. The elote mostly. It was a disappointment though. It was basically cheesy cream of corn. The brussel sprouts on the other hand, were great! My daughter felt they could use a little salt. I would probably add pine nuts, but thats about it. What surprised my wife was the SLO burn mixed drink. Appropriately named because it was spicy, made with habanero infused tequila. It was spicier than the jalapeño inspired drink my father-in-law had during lunch. For our main meal, my wife and I had our eyes on the same thing. I just knew she was going to want the prime rib dip since French dips are one of her faves. As a compromise, we decided to split it and the short rib grilled cheese sandwich. To my surprise, the grilled cheese, which was more hot sandwich than grilled cheese, was better. When dipped in the tomato soup, it was even better. The prime rib dip was good, but the grilled cheese was great. What's funny is that 3 people in the group ordered the Korean beef salad. I snatched a taste from my daughter. I thought it was really good. I'm just a sucker for Korean food in general, and the dressing had a nice citrusy taste to it. Probably the nice twist we didn't expect was the live singer. The women in the group were familiar with most of her songs, and they can appreciate a good singer since singing runs in the family. All in all, this was a great spot that I hope to try again in the future
