The honey butter is of course a classic spread, but give the seasonal jams a try. Blueberry jam was great, can't wait to take it home and add it to a charcuterie board. Chicken: got chicken strips. The breading was nice and crunchy, with a seasoning on it. Had hot honey to dip the chicken, the red pepper flakes l really make this a hot honey. Side: cucumber tomato salad. Be prepared, it has a kick from the vinegar but it nicely balances out the other flavors. The perfect bite: piece of chicken and biscuit dipped in hot honey topped with the tomato salad. I ordered the Piggy Wiggly (wiggy?) which had bacon jam, strips of bacon, and ham. It was just overkill; I didn't think they'd put so much everything. The service was also oddly slow. A few people went up to the counter to double check on their order. It was really busy since we went The Weeknd before Easter and there was an Easter egg hunt going on for children but other than that it was pretty casual. I was very excited to try this restaurant as they had gluten-free biscuits and other gluten-free options. I ordered gluten-free biscuits with red-eye gravy. I also ordered a side of braised okra. My husband, who is not gluten-free, had the regular biscuit with fried chicken. My SIL and cousins lived in Louisiana and North Carolina for a number of years, so l have eaten many Southern versions of red-eye gravy and biscuits. I didn't expect a gluten-free biscuit to have the taste or texture of a regular biscuit. But l also did not expect to have completely cold, rock-hard, incredibly dense pucks, covered with some kind of completely cold salsa-like sauce, full of peppers and onions and tomatoes. It bore zero resemblance to any kind of red-eye gravy l have ever had, since redeye gravy is made by frying country ham, removing the ham, then adding coffee to the pan. There are regional variations l've had, with sugar in it or a little roux to thicken it, or black pepper, but l have never had something that was more akin to gumbo than red-eye gravy. The fact that it was cold made it inedible, both for food safety and for taste and texture reasons. My husband said his regular fried chicken biscuit was "okay" but he wouldn't go back because the regular biscuit was very dense and dry, very unlike a typical fluffy Southern biscuit. He also said the fried chicken was barely warm, not hot, as you would expect from a freshly fried piece of chicken. The side of braised okra was the only thing l ate. It was warm, not hot and had more onions and peppers than okra, but the flavor and texture of the okra was good. All in all, it was extremely disappointing and we will not be back. read more

A bunch of us tried some of the food offerings over at the new San Luis Ranch Market the other day. It was raining, so we all sat inside where there was a lounge area as well as both regular tables and high-level tables. We shared the food, and discovered a lot of new additions to the SLO area cuisine. Two of my friends got the biscuits from Baby Bear Biscuits. One got the bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado on a biscuit and the other got gravy and biscuits. I got to taste some of the BLT and it was delicious. It also had that full rich flavor of the biscuit to kind of pump up the volume. It's huge, like four biscuits in one, so the servings are very large. We had fun dining inside, but it is kind of a food court experience. Don't expect tablecloths or service. You have to walk over to each vendor and order what you want, and then basically get it as takeout to take to your table. 2 stars may be generous, but I hate to knock a local small business. I was so excited to try this place because of the menu choices. We don't have a lot of soul food around here so I did not have a lot of expectations. Just fresh food with real ingredients. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I ordered the 2 pieces of chicken with 2 sides (red rice and macaroni and cheese). The macaroni and cheese was clearly old. It had a spoiled taste to it. One bite and it had to be thrown away because I did not want to risk food poisoning. The breading of the fried chicken fell right off when touched. It was clear that the chicken was not defrosted all the way before being breaded and fried. I wouldn't be so dissatisfied if the breading of the chicken had flavor, but there wasn't much there. The red rice was decent, but cold and clearly not fresh either. It was served with some pieces of okra on the side. I tried biting into this and it was slimy and inedible. The biscuit... these should be made fresh and served warm. Not cold and hard. It was clear that none of the food was fresh. I was left disappointed. I want a local, small business to succeed so bad, especially one that is needed in the area. Hopefully the owners take everyone's feedback and apply it so we can return our business here. read more

Last time I was I the SLO Ranch Farms and Marketplace was at the March 21 "soft opening" event for several of the restaurant establishments there in. That was quite an event and one of the restaurants, Baby Bear Biscuits, was more than intriguing and so a return trip was planned. Recently we made the trip and had another opportunity to not only to converse with Chef Norwood Pryor regarding his dedication of farm to table fare but to order several dishes from his Menu. From the moment we stepped up to order to our departure...all staff were helpful, friendly and attentive. The ambiance/atmosphere was as first experienced at the "soft opening" ...pleasant and airy, with a good buzz and plenty of available seating. Our order consisted of Appetizers: Fried Green Tomatoes (3/5 - not as "stunning" as I expected (crust was "soft", not "crisp" like I prefer)...but better for some reason as leftovers in the following days at home). Sandwiches: Fried Chicken Sandwich (5/5 - WOW...give this one a try, it's down right delicious!) and from the Special Plates: Shrimp and Grits (5/5 - Fabulous presentation and really yummy!) The portions served are more than plentiful so plan on taking some of your meal home ("the value factor"). After our meal Chef came out to thank us for returning...perhaps he remembered my Stetson hat from our first meeting. What stood out from our conversation was his "passion" for his craft. I went to Baby Bear Biscuits a couple of times when I was in SLO. The first day, I got the biscuit with ham, bacon, and bacon jam. It was really amazing, full of flavor, and more like a meal than just a biscuit sandwich. When I came back, I ordered the biscuit with the fried green tomatoes, and it was really delicious. I liked how it was a little bit lighter and very fresh. Though neither biscuit really seemed possible for me to pick up and eat, I had to use a knife and fork for both of them. Food was made to order and very fresh. I agree with what others have said that the service is slow, and the staff don't seem very friendly or welcoming. When you walk up, they don't even look up. I was surprised to see the reviews on this establishment, I would say one of the best fried chickens for the area. Even better customer service. The employee who took our order forgot about our order, when we asked how much longer she apologized and found out where we were seated outside and gave us a huge red velvet cake for free. You rarely see that type of customer service these days. Additionally, she brought our food out to us when it was ready, I'm not sure if they always do that but out of the the restaurants there they were the only ones to do that. Now to the chicken, extremely fresh, moist, and breading was crunchy. I wish they had some sort of hot sauce. The Mac and cheese was great as well but chicken was the star of the show. As welcoming as the name sounds, they didn't have a very friendly staff, but at least the food was great. The lady taking orders seemed very rush even though we were the only ones in line, it felt like "order your food and leave" kind of vibe. I ordered the pancakes with cinnamon and strawberries, not sure what it was called, but it was delicious. They gave me my food with no syrup or anything so it was dry at first, so I had to go back and get some. They had a weird mix of wooden utensils and metal utensils (for example they had metal forks but were out of metal spoons, so they had some wooden ones out). This kinda surprised me that they were out of utensils since I was there shortly after they opened. I would probably go back since I enjoyed slo ranch farms, but if there were other brunch options, I'd definitely like to try that out. read more

Three of us dined here for our monthly (or so) breakfast today and it was outstanding. Yes, there was a wait. Yes, it was well worth it. Delicious BLTA biscuit for me. Seemed like close to a third pound of bacon, generous portion of avocado, the arugula was dressed with a zesty buttermilk dressing that compliments the richness of the dish and the pickled onion finished it off for a perfectly balanced dish. Pickled okra on the side was a nice add. The biscuit was outstanding. Portion was huge. The chef/owner stopped by to say hi and we had a great chat hearing about his ending up here from NC. Such a wonderful man and so great to hear how involved he is giving back to the community besides providing scrumptious elevated southern food to San Luis. I would try anything on his menu. I hired Norwood of Baby Bear Biscuits to cater my wedding in May. Planning the menu with him was a joy at first -- creative, exciting, and full of promise. But what was delivered on our wedding day was deeply disappointing and, frankly, devastating. As a former pastry chef and having several chef friends at the wedding, we were all flabbergasted this was served as a wedding meal. Many of the dishes we agreed on were either missing entirely or substituted without warning. There was no kids buffet, no vendor meals, no tea or coffee service, and no bread or table snacks. The three-tiered wedding cake we'd discussed in detail was replaced with 3 round cakes with holes in them, and unfrosted sheet cakes that were dry, poorly decorated, and served before we could even do our cake-cutting. My husband and I were left with a single knife to cut our cake, while a member of the catering staff used our decorative cake-cutting set to serve sheet cake to guests. I had dreamt of that moment for months -- and it was gone in a blink. The buffet included cold fried chicken and overcooked macaroni and cheese, which we never approved. The mashed potato bar -- the part I was personally most looking forward to -- was never set up. My guests and I were confused and disappointed. The catering staff appeared unprepared, did not know the menu, and spoke loudly through the Father of the Bride speech -- something my family and I found incredibly disrespectful. Many dishes were cold, poorly cooked or tasted days old. Some were mislabeled or not labeled at all. My guests had to guess whether they were eating beets or potatoes because the staff didn't know what the gray undercooked vegetables were (they were beets, it turned out). There were no accommodations for dietary restrictions we had discussed repeatedly over months of planning. Some guests went hungry. Some felt unwell later that evening, including myself. We had brunch at Baby Bear Biscuits and that was also a disappointment. The cashier in front was very rude to me, my family, and my guests that were patronizing their business. Norwood didn't even come out and greet us. He stayed in the kitchen. This experience was heartbreaking. I trusted Baby Bear Biscuits with one of the most meaningful parts of my wedding day, and that trust was broken. I cannot recommend their services or food after this experience. read more

I am giving two stars because the Banana Cake that I had on my first visit was absolutely STELLAR-- like so good I have been trying to recreate it. On my first visit I was so excited as I had heard so many amazing things! I ordered a biscuit breakfast sandwich as well as the slice of cake. The young girl at the front was totally lovely. My sandwich was fine and I'll be honest-- I don't think I am really a sandwich girl. I didn't think that it had a ton of flavor- maybe I didn't choose a good one it was basic like egg, bacon + cheese. It was missing like a KICK of something but again, I just am really not a breakfast person but THAT CAKE-- was TO DIE FOR. So, the next time I came in I looked for the cake but they did not have it but they had hand pies. I ordered what they said were Blueberry Cheesecake Hand Pies. I bit in to one in my car- not blueberry. It was like sweet potato or something and I have a slight allergy. I called immediately and asked. The girl on the phone told me THREE TIMES that they were blueberry cheesecake and I was like, "Listen, I bit into it and it is CLEARLY not blueberry!!" She then asked someone ,"the hand pies are blueberry cheesecake, right?" Then comes back and says.... "Oh those are Squash" My problem here is no apology. No offer for replacement. No offer for refund. I threw them away after one bite. $9.95 I believe? We just went in on Sunday again-- here I am to look for that damn banana cake. Again, none. So I see a coconut cake and order it. We then go over and order pizza and I go to take a bite of the cake- stale. My husband goes over and asks for a fresh piece. This piece was in the box on a shelf and there was a cake on the shelf down- maybe that one was fresher? She says they were made yesterday and going to be the same. I know cake, very well. Very, very well. I said to my husband, lets give them the benefit of the doubt maybe this cake is cold and needs to get to room temp-- we eat our AMAZING pizza from Palo Mesa, then go to take a bite of the cake-- its like fork breaking hard still. My husband wants to ask for a refund. I look over and watch the owner stick his finger in something, lick it, then reach over to a handwashing sink and instead of washing his hands he simply grabs a paper towel and wipes his finger. I promptly close the box, toss it in the trash and will NEVER go back here ever again, nor will I ever recommend this spot. Sanitation issues. Stale cake. Terrible customer service by not offering a replacement with THEIR mistake on those hand pies, that was too many strikes for me. I am sad however because THAT BANANA CAKE was real good. read more

About half way through our 30-minute plus wait, we joked that maybe they had to go out fish the shrimp. The ordering process was very unprofessional-had to spell the words for the biscuits I wanted, order taken on scratch paper and charged more than the amount listed on the catering menu. Went back a week later to make sure my order was inputted correctly. Was reassured everything was fine-no response to the overcharge. Pick up day-packed by the owner in front of me because it wasn't ready to go. Questioned him to make sure half of the biscuits were savory and told they were. Opened the next day for serving-no savory biscuits. So basically overcharged, unprofessional ordering and untruthful communication. Will not go to this business again. read more

Just had breakfast here with my husband and a couple of friends, and everything was so good! We ordered a couple of Yardbirds, the fried green tomato biscuit sandwich, and sides of biscuits and gravy and grits. Everything came out warm and in a reasonable amount of time. The biscuits and gravy were the standout for me--the biscuits were soft, flaky, and buttery on the inside with the perfect crunchy crust. I honestly wish we had ordered extra to take home. The fried chicken was also delicious. I was hoping to try it solo, but it came as part of the Yardbird with pimento cheese, gravy, and eggs. It would be nice if they could offer it a la carte, but i guess we'll have to go back and try it solo for lunch/dinner :) The sausage gravy was spot on - not too salty, and it complemented rather than overwhelmed everything else. We had both scrambled and fried eggs at the table, and everyone was happy with how they were cooked.
