I've been here many times and this last trip to Rome twice (almost 3'times but they were closed one day). I love this place. I could go everyday. The imperial Earl Grey tea is wonderful. Babingtons is a life-saver! After walking the miles and miles of streets sightseeing and window-shopping, I had to take a break and headed fir this adorable corner of England. Rome, of course, has an abundance of espresso and coffee caffes so Babingtons brings tea up front and center as their offering. What a grand selection of teas that they have! Black, Green, Herbal Infusion, Special blends particular to the shop. The list goes on & on. For me today, I had the afternoon tea with the mignon (darling) cookies and a mini cupcake. It was just right! Five sweets offered; I ate the chocolate chip cookie which was delicate and crumbly, part of the coconut macaron and the spice cake mini cupcake. Yum! My tea selection was the Babingtons special blend with rose oil and an assortment of spices. Delicate in taste it was a lovely afternoon tea. The service was calm and mannerly. I chatted with the young lady serving me and she was from Southern Italy and a stage & theater actress by trade...interesting to see that in Rome, those who want to perform end up in food service just like in the USA. As I absorbed the 100+ years of history in this small shop, I marvel at its continued existence. The grandson of the founder was sitting two tables away from me working on a computer and giving periodic instructions to lead staff. Babingtons? More like BADingtons. The food here is horrible -- we ordered avocado toast and it was BROWN. Not to mention the prices are extremely high for the quality of the food and tea. It's basically a Lipton tea bag that they charge $15 for each and not to mention the over $10 coffee with NO refills. Is this tea room ridiculously expensive? Yes, yes it is. But it's sooooooooo cute. My friend and I both ordered iced teas and they came beautifully served. (And although it doesn't really help offset the high price, you do get a few glasses of tea per order.) In addition to tea, Babingtons offers a wide variety of food (including breakfast options, served all day), high tea, pastries, and ice cream. I stopped here while checking out the Spanish Steps because I was thirsty and needed a break from ROME-ing around. This place is so awesome and the décor and ambience is perfect. I felt so proper having lemonade and some light bites here. Service was friendly, the food was alright (I only ordered finger sandwiches), and the mint infused lemonade was SO good. So good that I am planning an event and this lemonade inspired me to recreate something similar for the party. I loved how on the last page of the menu, you could see all of Babington's history. A couple things I thought were cool, was how Elizabeth Taylor secretly frequented Babington's while she was working on the filming of Cleopatra. Another historical line item was that Babingtons mentioned one of their longest working employees. I forget what exactly it said, but I thought it was a nice touch and it says a lot about them as a business. I was seeking a more traditional english breakfast and decided to come here one morning while we were in Rome. Babingtons wasn't particularly bad or good, just expensive. We ordered a fruit salad which was I think 9 euro and it was pretty terrible. The scrambled eggs were decent and toast was, again, very expensive. We were a little taken back by the prices at first but we had an excellent time here! The staff was so kind and we really enjoyed their service. My dad ordered a salad and my mom and I had the Dorothy's Cream Tea for two. My dad LOVED his salad. He said it was perfect. He even had a grapefruit juice with it. He was very happy. My mom and I loved the Scottish scones with the cream and jam. The earl grey tea tasted a little too smokey for our liking but we mostly enjoyed it. This place has the cutest teapots ever! Found this place walking around the Spanish Steps. It is very nice and they sat us right away even though we were a group of 5. Are the teas pricey? Yes, they can be, but I live near LA so I wasn't put off by the prices. We got the high tea which came with sandwiches, scones, and little desserts for about the same LA prices. It's not uncommon to pay $25-30 per person at a tea house. I found the prices comparable, but if you've never been to a tea house, I can see why some say it's expensive. It's an experience and we were willing to pay for it. The service was great and the people were amicable. Would recommend if you're in the area and want some tea. The 125th anniversary tea was great. After some late lunch wine I began falling asleep on the Spanish Stairs waiting for our evening wine tour. Realizing sleeping on stairs wasn't wise, I forced myself awake ad noticed this tea shop right next to the steps. Wandering in, our first impression was how cute this place is! Completely themed down to the servers outfits, it's a bit like dining in a Disney restaurant. Prices, well, they went right along with the Disney thing, and seemed quite shocking at first. Our server indicated that we should each get one pot of tea per person, when really, a pot of tea yields more than one cup and could be shared (which would at least bring the price down to a reasonable point). Overall, the service was pretty standard for Italy, and it took some prodding (begging) for the check, to be served etc. It's a cutesy place and worth checking out if you're in the area and needing tea, but don't go out of your way to get here. read more

After climbing up and down those really steep Spanish Steps (jk lol) and Rome-ing around in the city trying not to get crushed by masses of tourists, I was ready for something quiet, peaceful and refreshing. Spotted this sign as I was just getting done taking photos with couple horses outside, cause why not. Walked in and was pleasantly surprised. This quaint place is cutesy, colorful and has a plethora of teas and pastries to choose from. We ordered Babingtons Blue Lady and a slice of fruit tarte. Tea had a fruity aroma and left a lasting taste. It had a nice, soft, unclouded pink color, not bitter, moderately chilled with ice cubes, felt clean, refreshing and kept me coming back for more sips. The tarte complemented the tea well and enhanced it to perfection, if it wasn't already. It was romantic and felt like an oasis from being in the crowds all day. I left feeling refreshed, satisfied and lighthearted to experience the rest of our adventure for the day. Loved it! read more

Went here par my friend's suggestion. Also it was rainy and gross outside and our legs were tired from trekking through Rome, so we decided to take a "break" and drink tea. The outside of the store isn't too special, but it's pretty big inside. As you walk in, you pass a small souvenir area with teas and cute mugs. The place is simple and quaintly decorated. Not like those super glamorous high tea places with diamond chandeliers and silver three tiered assortments of caviar sandwiches. It's much more rustic/cozy which means it must be legit? Idk but there were a lot of tourists (almost all tables were full) in the place, so I felt at home haha. Waiters all spoke perfect English - another sign it's a touristy spot. We were seated within 10 min and the waiter was super nice and service was quick - the quickest at all the places in Italy so far! My friend and I shared a two person high tea and it was freakin 35 euros...ouch. But I was down to splurge since when is the next time I'll be in Rome. The tea came with milk, lemons, and sugar. And four fluffy scones - two currant and two plain. The scones were great - dense and buttery and soft. But they are still not worthy of 35 euros...lol. It came with whipped cream and homemade strawberry jam. This place is a great place to go for tourists but expect it to make a dent on your wallet. There's a lot of history behind this place (according to the pamphlets I didn't read) and it makes for great Instagram pics, but there are definitely better classier glitzier high tea spots in the States. read more

I first discovered this tea salon right at the foot of the Spanish steps twenty-two years ago on my honeymoon vacation and fast forward I'm back again with my own family it brings back fond memories. Amid the hustle of large crowds at the Spanish steps this tea salon is a relaxing quiet oasis. This time we came for supper, tea and dessert. They welcome kids and offer a kids menu, and colored pencils and a coloring page. There was no waiting and we were greeted and seated promptly. Babington's is celebrating their 150 year anniversary circa 1868 with a special tea blend and cake. We ordered a kids hamburger with fries, curry chicken rice, a homemade English muffin Eggs Benedict, strawberry tea smoothie, a pot of their anniversary blend tea and cake - everything tasted good and my kids' gave it thumbs up. The first time we came, we were looking for a nice rest stop after a day of walking. It was a warm day so we opted for the cooler beverages. They have a homemade mint lemonade that is tasty but pretty expensive. Essentially it is lemon juice with water and mint. The liquid sugar comes on the side and you add to taste. What we discovered is that they also have very tasty dishes. We order some of their pancakes and were blown away. They are so good. Again, expensive but worth it if you want to splurge. I go crazy for tea time and cucumber sandwiches! Babington is the tea house straight from a Jane Austen novel: floral wallpaper in pastels and shades of mint, female servers donning aprons, and *doilies. The first time I came here, the servers were so rude that we walked out. The women were gossiping in the corner of the restaurant in Victorian dresses. When we asked what kind of desserts were available, she waved us to the glass case of cakes and told us to look ourselves before shuffling back to her flock of feathered fowls. Thank goodness there were big changes. No more huge dresses; olive green aprons instead. I went here twice, each time during the afternoon and the tea rooms are packed! On my first visit, I came with a couple friends and we had a "Ritz" tea-time: tiers of little sandwiches, hot scones with cream and jam, and kettles of tea of course. Yes, it was a splurge and us barbarians actually left full. Tea-time is not a meal - it's a holdover snack at midday! The sandwiches are plain because they're not meant to be a meal. This is a high $$$ environment with a handful of tourists and many well-dressed older folk. Salads go for close to €20 and I overlook the rest of the items. I have to say I was disappointed. I expected a lot more from the looks of the place and its reputation but their teas basically fell flat for me. They have a lot of good marketing and the tea smelled great when I walked in and smelled literally every tea. I tried two of their most popular teas and it just wasn't very good. Now with that being said, if you came here with the right expectations its still a great place to stop in for a respite after walking the Spanish Steps. Babington's Tea Room may have been the place to go for tea 50 years ago, but certainly not anymore. The shop now merely relies on its reputation and location. We sat down and it took 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged by a snooty waitress with a sour looking grimace and an overall lack of enthusiasm and professionalism. I suppose it is possible that she was overwhelmed with three other tables of two and their order of sandwiches, but it looked like she just could not be bothered. It goes without saying that the food and drinks were overpriced, but I can live with that given the excellent location and history. What I cannot live with is that that when the food finally arrived it was just marginal - certainly nothing to have this kind of arrogance about. My husband and I encountered this tea shop by accident. We were passing by the Spanish steps around 4 and saw a tea place, in Italy!, instead of the typical coffee/espressos. They had room for 2 for walk in so we did the 125th Anniversary Tea Set and the Afternoon Tea set. Both were so wonderfully done - they looked beautiful and the tea tasted amazing, we probably went through 6 cups each. The setting was relaxed and we enjoyed our tea over the course of an hour.
