The tourney organizer, Ezekiel is friendly, helpful, considerate, and really cares about the people playing Magic here. He will wait to start if someone is running late and will work with the players to figure out proper judge calls. I believe he also hosts Warhammer 40K events too. The store itself is very well lit, maintained, and most importantly clean. We all know board and card game enthusiasts can be on the smelly/ less hygienic side, but this store is thankfully better maintained. The bathroom is cleaned regularly. The staff is friendly and helpful. They've always been nice to customers from what I see, and will regularly bring your order to your table if you're busy playing a game. All in all I couldn't recommend a better place to play board games or Magic: The Gathering.

I'm not sure what I was expecting out of a lecture entitled "Dark Mysteries of the Universe" but it certainly wasn't an engaging and entertaining lecture by a Columbia professor, a standing-room-only full house of rabid nerds, or a gritty dive-y Brooklyn Bar that serves up specialty cocktails (this night's was The Cosmological Constant) alongside Red Stripe. This particular session included a dumbing-down of the entire history of the universe for the lay person, a recap of scientific observations and discoveries from famed researchers, mind-boggling mathematical formulae for the cognoscenti, and a roundup of the outstanding unanswered questions we have about all creation. Heady topics, for sure. That was all fine, until the question and answer session at the end, where chirality, matter vs. anti-matter, and deep-dives into complex mathematical equations properly blew my mind. It turns out that in addition to such lay people as myself, subject matter experts also enjoy attending these functions. All in all, I had a great time learning about esoteric science topics while sipping on a Brooklyn lager. How often do -you- get to discuss the secret workings of the universe over a beer? Just make sure to arrive WAY early if you want a coveted seat!

Not sure why yelp changed the name . I noticed the change and am editing my review. I normally would not review such a place but this one stood out and I thought it might assist other yelpers. Historically, the 143 year-old building was formerly a gold-leaf factory and high-end funeral parlour. The interior is designed to reflect the gritty, artistic history of the Lower East Side. Upon further exploration, of the club's four stories of rooms, we notice an eclectic mix of vintage pieces mostly salvaged from local vintage and consignment shop finds with unique artwork on display. The plush "Velvet Room" used for private screenings, was inspired by the apartment where Lou Reed and John Cale recorded early music demos, thus "the Velvet Underground" reference. Members are mostly scions of the Arts, Real Estate, and other fortunes. The establishment serves as a quiet escape in the city. The staff are helpful and well versed.
