I did not hire this shop directly, but I had an unpleasant experience dealing with Mike from Baba John's Brakes & Auto Repair Inc. A potential buyer for my car scheduled a pre-purchase inspection with Mike. I fully understand my car (a 2011 model) was not perfect -- far from it. However, after about 30 minutes of inspecting the car, Mike proceeded to speak very negatively about it, both to me and the potential buyer. He pointed out every possible flaw (some real, some exaggerated) in a rude, unprofessional, and almost aggressive manner. He never mentioned a single positive thing, just an endless list of problems, delivered with unnecessary negativity. He didn't even provide a written report -- it was all verbal, which made it even less professional. I understand a mechanic's job is to point out issues, but Mike's approach felt less like an honest evaluation and more like a mission to completely scare the buyer away. He even irresponsibly used the word "salvage" -- a serious accusation that was completely unfounded. Later that same day, a different buyer looked at the car and took it to a different mechanic, who disagreed with about 80% of Mike's claims. In fact, I ended up selling the car that same day to the new buyer, who paid my full asking price after a reasonable inspection elsewhere. While I was fortunate in the end, the horrible experience dealing with Mike left a very bad impression. I can't speak for his skills as a mechanic, but based on his behavior, I seriously question his professionalism and integrity. read more

I ended up at Baba John Brakes after having went to the dealership for a car I had just received. I knew that the vehicle needed a few things done to it, and figured I'd maybe pay the slightly more for a dealership to "know that the job was done right". After having received a quote for the work that needed to be done to "legally" (yes, the dealer tried to hold my car hostage by implying I couldn't have it until the work was done) take my car back that was in excess of 10,000$, and over 30,000$ for the car to be in perfect condition, I brought it in the Baba John Brakes. Mike and his wife were quick and efficient with responding, making the drop off easy and communicating with me along the way letting me know what needed to be done. In the end Mike ended up having to do MORE work than the dealership quoted to get the car in "legal" order. And it cost a minor fraction of the 10,000 estimate I was given by the dealer. He also let me know of a few other minor things that he could have tried to up-sell me saying it needs to be done right now to make an extra buck, but instead he assured me they aren't anything to worry about, and that I could come back at a later date to get fixed. I can't recommend this place enough and am so glad I have found a trustworthy place to bring my car for its maintenance!! read more

My brakes started squeaking and I didn't feel safe driving very far. I did a search in my neighborhood and found him so close by! The reviews were great, so I gave him a call. He was super friendly and was able to get me in a couple of days later. He explained the costs and replaced four brake pads the same day. When I picked it up and was driving home, I heard a thump, like I ran over a soda can, but was nervous that it could be the brakes. I sent him a text after hours on a Friday and he said he could look at them the next day. I didn't think it was the brakes, and he wanted to be safe rather than sorry. I had a great first experience at Baba John. I spoke with Mike about my brakes. He asked me if I could bring my vehicle in for a free brake inspection. I brought it in the next morning. I dropped my vehicle off. Mike called me back in less than an hour with my quote. I thought it was a fair price and asked him to do the repairs. He called me back when it was ready for pickup. I had a lot of friends that were raving about Baba John's for brakes and all auto mechanic repairs. I called them and spoke with Mike T. He set up a time for me to come in. He also preordered the brakes so I wouldn't have to get my car inspected and bring the car back when the brakes came in. He said he would return the brakes if I didn't need them. Once I got there, he saw I was about to call an Uber so he lent me his extra car. I called me the same day and said everything was done. He also gave me an oil change. The price of everything, which inclined shaving down my rotors bc I waited too long to get brakes, was almost half the price as what I expected. I tend to not want to rate mechanics because it's always dicey and there's always some stuff I don't like. I put Mike to the test from the phone, unintentionally, and he showed amazing customer service when I was being quite difficult. I was really surprised so I booked an appointment. I called around to ensure I got the best rate for oil change in the area as he promised. He was right and I was in his shop one hour later. Remarkable customer service in person left me wanting to just keep coming back. First mechanic in SD and I will never write such a review about anyone else since mechanics are usually poor at customer service. Btw his service was equally as great and he showed me so much about my car. And guess what? He didn't start recommending random tune ups or issues w my car. Crazy right? FANTASTIC experience!! My girlfriend struck a curb while driving at night, and damaged the rim, control arm, sway bar link, wheel bearing, and inner/outer tie rods among other smaller issues. My gf is in college (money is tight), so I called around to 5+ locations looking for the best price. Numerous other locations quoted me hundreds of dollars more, or didn't respond to me at all. Mike at Baba John Brakes was super down-to-earth, professional, reasonable and responsive so I chose them. Mike identified the major problems with the car, and discussed what necessarily needed to be addressed, and what could wait. I never felt like I was being up-sold on parts/services, and had a real, matter-of-fact conversation with him about damages, pricing and recommendations (the longest conversation I've ever had with a mechanic). He quoted me 2 hours of labor to replace one specific part (Car repair guides also quote 2 hours), and he charged me 1.5 hours because it had gone more quickly than expected! He easily could have charged me the 2 hours and I would have never known. I am inherently skeptical about mechanics because I've been swindled and up-sold before, and it's difficult to verify whether or not I truly need certain repairs or not, but my treatment was so friendly and professional, that I felt obligated to comment.
