We had our wedding reception at Baar Baar. We wanted an intimate event with about 30 of our closest family and friends. The priority for us was good food and beautiful ambiance, and we got so much more. The planning process was very smooth, Jyoti was very helpful in helping us create a menu with plenty of food and to organize when everything would come out. She also hooked us up with her flower vendor who was incredibly talented, flexible and reasonably priced. The private event space is gorgeous. It didn't really need much, we only added flowers. The food is phenomenal, literally no notes, EVERYTHING was excellent. They offer creative takes on classic dishes. They kept the food and drinks rolling. Great Indian food, amazing ambiance! We tried their set/tasting menu 5 courses ($55pp) it was sooo good! We were started off with dahi puri. Each course had plenty of vegetarian options. Our favorite from course 2 was the Kerala duck birria taco. There were 4 of us so each one of us chose a different main course and all the dishes were absolutely delicious! Their portions are large and for sides we could choose between naan, rice and dal makhni. We all got different sides and they were perfectly shareable. They re-opened their brunch dining which yay I loved going there before, bud boo they got rid of my favorite lamb burger. The new brunch menu has some great new additions with the uttapam and they kept their selection of egg dishes. But I'm so heartbroken at the loss of the lamb burger I loved getting here. The owners went around and spoke to patrons and I was too shy to tell him that I missed off the menu. Maybe another time lol. The brunch duck tacos didn't skimp on meat or flavor, but I'd probably come back for the uttapam. Same bold flavors, but since we were told the brunch mains aren't meant to be shared, I'd think the tacos would come with 3 instead of 2. Came here with my family to celebrate Mother's Day. We were excited to get reservations and it was a prefix menu. We had a great experience overall. A few things I would probably change, but overall it was wonderful. The family who owns the business also was cordial and kind and took time to talk to us. The vibe is incredible. Ambience is great no doubt and so are rhe drinks! The slumdog millionaire is a fan favorite for sure. The food however was not that impressive, maybe because I'm Indian? The presentation was lovely as is rhe decor of the restaurant but the creativity didn't always translate into flavor. The cauliflower 65 was our favorite from the night. Good flavors and nice texture to the gobi. The avocado bhel was a stretch. It tasted more like guacamole with a few crispy wonton on top to make it a "bhel". The sweet potato chaat was interesting with pakora on top adding to the crunch, mostly tasted of chutney though. The paneer pinwheels were disappointing. I'm not a big fan of Indian food, but last night My Mom said she was craving Indian curry, so we went out for dinner. The restaurant is right near our home, so we walked there. The food was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere was lovely, every dish was delicious, and everyone was very kind and friendly. I ordered the Paneer Pinwheel, my mom had the Shrimp Malvani Curry, and my brothers ordered Butter Chicken and a Selection of Indian Curries. All four of us also ordered Saffron Rice. I came here for my birthday dinner with my Yelp BFF, Karren, and we had such a memorable experience. They offer valet parking, but we parked in the paid lot nearby which was quick and convenient. The restaurant itself is absolutely stunning, the bar area is gorgeous, the mural on the wall is beautiful, and they have a unique, creative drink menu that really stands out. We ordered several dishes, and the daal and chicken were definitely my top favorites. The paneer kulcha, however, didn't have much flavor for me and wasn't my favorite of the night. The gulab jamun cheesecake was unbelievably delicious... I just wish I had more room in my tummy to eat more of it! One of the highlights of the night was unexpectedly running into a few celebs who were also dining there it added such a fun surprise and totally topped my birthday. My friends and I loved our experience at Baar Baar. Unfortunately it was raining like crazy on the day we had reservations for but that didn't stop us. We arrived to a rather empty restaurant (probably due to the rain). Staff took care of us right away seating us and explaining the menu. We had heard that they're known for their cocktails so we each ordered a different one. All of them were really good and I can see why people say their cocktails are good. The bar is also really impressive if you just wanted to come for a drink. All the cocktails are named after famous Indian movies which was really cute. For the food, we opted into the prix fixe menu (all parties at your table must participate) but it was perfect because the menu had a lot of their most popular items that we would've wanted to order and try anyways. We did end up ordering 2 extra items - the lamp chops as well as the jalapeno cheese naan. It ended up being more than enough food but everything was so good and we were so happy to try it all. The puri puri amuse bouche was SO GOOD! The avocado bhel appetizer dish was also surprisingly good. The traditional butter chicken with the saffron rice was classic but delicious and I loved the seabass fish as well as the jalapeno cheese stuffed naan. I normally don't care for beans but I can see why the Black Dairy Dal is $15!! It was so flavorful and a must get. I usually love wine with dinner but these days, especially the restaurants on downtown LA, have upped their cocktail game. With complex and refreshing flavors and an Indian kick, the cocktails were amazing. We did enjoy the food. The lambchop was decent and the short ribs and sea bass and butter chicken were delicious. I would skip the duck tacos. Not bad but not memorable and with the birria sauce, didn't really help with duck flavoring. I know they try to bring California twist to the menu but I would have done cheese birria taco with mashed peas or potato even. Shredding duck meat is just a waste. We also skipped a lot of vegetable and shared plates and went straight for large plates meat/seafood dishes with sides family style. Skip the dessert. Came for dinner last night and had a real lovely time! The restaurant is located off 9th and they have valet parking, though street parking is in the area too. The restaurant is really beautiful, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We sat at one of the wraparound booths in the bar area which was a classy vibe. Service was all super friendly, though it's always interesting to have non-Indians serving you at an Indian restaurant if they aren't super knowledgeable about the cuisine and culture. On the drinks side, we ordered a pomegranate mocktail and their take on the Tequila Sunrise (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge), and both were great. Neither were super sweet, and both were refreshing. On the food front, we did the tasting menu: Dahi Puri: Good but too much yogurt, it needed more of the masala Cauliflower 65: loved the presentation (looked like fried prawns) and taste, its spicy but super flavorful Duck Taco: this was also excellent, the consomé was delicious and was a great take on a birria taco Traditional Butter Chicken: pretty good, but I've had better. The flavor was a bit on the bland side, but the chicken was super tender Beef Short Ribs: this was a miss overall, the curry was very tasty but the beef wasn't tender, and the marrow wasn't all that flavorful. I'd avoid this dish. Sides: Garlic Naan was great, Saffron rice was fine (if you like saffron you'll enjoy it). Gulab Jamun Cheesecake: delicious! The ice cream it came with was super good too. Rasmalai Cassatta: delicious, a nice refreshing dessert that wasn't too heavy either. Overall, I was really happy with the meal with the exception of the Beef and a few critiques on other items. I'd say this place was closer to a 3.75/5, but will round up because of the vibes and unique experience. First off, it's a beautiful interior and decor. Felt glamorous and charming, luxe but not pretentious. We were greeted warmly by all staff, had amazing service through out the meal, and the food itself was delicious. Cocktails were strong, flavorful and well balanced. I eat everything but my partner is pescatarian and we both were very happy with what we ordered. I recommend the tuna tostada and the short ribs. Dessert was by far my favorite part of the meal: we ordered the layered dessert, but when they brought it out, they also included pistachio ice cream and 2 glasses of pink champagne as part of an anniversary celebration. We didn't feel like cooking a few Saturday's back so we headed out to stop at a random restaurant that we walked by and we just so happened to walk by Baar Baar. This place was way nicer than I was expecting when we saw it across the street, but this place is absolutely beautiful inside. When you walk in you are greeted at the front door before going into this massive place with a ton of different tables, booths, and a large bar as well. The menu here has a lot of different appetizers, entrees, and desserts but I'm a simple man who knew what he wanted right away. We ended up splitting some rice and naan, and I also ordered whatever the fried chicken like dish was that came with a delicious sauce. What was the name you ask? I honestly have no clue because as I sit and look at the menu, I straight up don't see it on the menu. Either way, this chicken had incredible flavour, was super juicy, and the sauce that was on the plate for dipping was really freaking good too. I took full advantage of the naan as well soaking up the rest of the sauce and it was went very nicely together. Overall, Baar Baar wasn't what I expected, but I certainly left satisfied with the experience. The service here was super friendly, the food was very good, and the place itself was beautiful. Recently happened upon Baar Baar after attending an art exhibit at the nearby Variety Arts Theater. Really enjoyed their Bollywood-themed cocktails. The Lagaan was my top favorite, a play on a gin sour. My partner's Munna Bhai, a whisky based drink, was also delicious. The multi course menu for $55 per person is a great way to try a variety of items. For mains to share, I opted for the kofta curry while my partner chose the fish. The fish was especially tender and flavorful. Though, we both could not help but keep going back for spoonfuls of curry, practically licking the dish clean. This is definitely a restaurant to enjoy in-person. The space and decor are chic yet comfortable; a great place for a special occasion, date night, or hang with friends. Service was all around attentive and friendly in which water was consistently topped off, staff checked in regularly, and we were never ignored or rushed. Chicken Malai Tikka: Tender chicken smothered in a cheesy sauce. Not flavorful. Traditional Butter Chicken: Very sweet curry. Seabass Pollichathu: Not completely descaled. Having to pick out fish scales from my mouth made the dish a nuisance to eat. Lacked seasoning. Traditional Black Dairy Dal: Yummy, but oversalted. Gulab Juman Cheesecake: Mid cheesecake; nothing tasted remotely reminiscent of gulab juman. Decent saffron pistachio ice cream. Rasmalai Cassata: Could not taste rose. Absolutely terrible experience, purely due to the management. My family and I went here for lunch as a party of four. Things took a completely unacceptable turn when the bill arrived. I noticed an automatic 20% "large party" service charge added to our total. Their own menu clearly states that a large party is defined as six or more people. We were only four. I always leave a 20% or higher gratuity anyway, but being forced into a mandatory charge under false pretenses is just wrong. I called the manager over to politely point out the error. Instead of apologizing, he was incredibly rude. He dismissed my concern and claimed "this is how it is" and that the charge is applied by default to everyone. I asked him to explain the point of the menu defining a large party if every table gets the same mandatory fee. He took the bill back and said he would see if he could change it. He returned with the exact same bill, doubling down and telling me that it is just normal and everyone has to pay it. When I pointed back to the policy written on their menu, he completely deflected and accused me of shouting and being rude to him. I was absolutely not raising my voice. He eventually went back and removed the charge, but the entire experience was ruined. This is a massive trust buster. It is a very sneaky practice, and it feels like they are intentionally slipping these charges onto bills hoping customers will not notice. To anyone reading this review: please check your bill carefully! I strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant entirely unless they replace this dishonest and hostile manager. read more
