I'm a damn good shot!…read more Today was the first day I've even seen a handgun up close let alone fired one. It was a little tricky to find exactly where to go to find the place. I followed the entrance sign but apparently it's between the two sets of doors. There's a bendy green hallway...sort of a green mile...that leads to the gun shop where they sell rifles, handguns, ammo and accessories. I approached the counter and told the woman I was interested in trying out the firing range. She produced a release form to read and sign, which I did, then asked what I'd like to use for a gun. I had no clue. I told her I was a firearm virgin so she suggested the 9mm handgun. I selected my target sheet, paid, then went and put on the hearing protection. One of the range agents opened the door to the range and showed me a bench where I could put my stuff. We approached the chutes. There were a couple guys and a chick in the stalls beside me. I'd never even heard a gunshot at close range and was a bit startled the first couple times. It didn't help that the other woman was shrieking since the shell casings from her neighbour's gun were flying in her direction. Nothing dangerous, it just freaked her out. So, I approached chute 6 where my pistol du jour was waiting. The attendant went over the main safety rules and showed me how to load and properly hold the weapon. I had to get him to repeat a few things because some hot shot down the line was firing off a Glock every time the guy opened his mouth to tell me the rules. It took me forever to load it but I was stubbornly determined to fill the first round myself. I got a little flustered when I was concentrating on loading bullets and chiquita next to me fired her first shot and shrieked. You'd almost think she'd shot herself but of course she didn't. Finally, all loaded and locked, I raised the firearm and took aim. It was a very different experience than any I'd had. It was totally exhilarating and I had a brief moment of "wow, I actually did it!" I wasn't used to the recoil and had to make a conscious effort not to clench my jaw because when I did, my hearing protection didn't do its job. After the first couple shots I felt comfortable and focused more on hitting spots on the target. I even selected an intentional groin shot for that poor, unsuspecting cactus cowboy. Good to know I could hit it if I wanted to. I took home my target, counted the bullet holes and determined that every single shot hit the page. Not bad for a virgin. I got one dead center of the largest target and, of course, the crotch shot I was so proud of. I felt a lot more powerful walking through the mall the rest of the day. Good times. I'd definitely go back and try a different gun.

The range staff were relaxed and amazing. They were quick and thorough with the 9mm pistol instruction. They asked if I had shot before ( which I have). They guy watched and then gave me tips on how to get closer to the bullseye. Really appreciated that! I was allowed to load my own clip, shoot at my own pace and even got some great pictures during the experience. Will definitely be returning! Thanks Wild West!
