I came in to have a dress altered in length and shoulders. When I returned a week later to try on dress I could no longer button it down the front. I would have to had gained 10 lbs in one week for this to happen. When I questioned what happened, the response I got from first tailor was a repeated ridiculous response of ohhh, I don't know how that can be, we didn't do anything wrong. Over and over again as if gremlins came in overnight. When I questioned how we were going to financially fix this problem as the dress was ruined and I now had to buy a new one the second tailor became rude and aggressive. This circular conversation continued to waver between gremlins were responsible and nasty, aggressive behavior until I realized this situation was getting ugly. I don't operate at that level, so I paid and left. They got their money and that's all they cared about, so beware! read more

Before you use their services know that they don't take credit card or checks. cash only, and that a hem on my daughters cocktail dress cost $100. The dress didn't even cost that much. when I questioned the charge they told me Bc it was last minute. The dress was dropped off yesterday around 4 PM and was picked up 230 today. Robbery. I picked B & J to do my alterations on my bridesmaid dress for my sisters wedding due to their good reviews. They added cups, took in the straps, took in the sides, and hemmed the dress. I was unhappy with the dress when I picked it up because it wasn't taken in enough (so the cups weren't offering any support, they were just hovering). The first picture I posted is how the dress was when I picked it up from them. I expressed how uncomfortable I was with it and I felt that it made me look even larger than I already am, to which the response I got was "well you're not THAT big" and that they were unable to take it in more because it was a "dry chiffon" and it was fraying. They charged me $125. I took the dress to Katarinas in Hackettstown and they took it in (and did away with the poorly placed cups) for $35.... the second picture is how the dress should have looked. read more

It's very rare you meet someone who is willing to go out of their way to help others without expecting something in return. Barry and Jose, however, went above and beyond to make me feel confident. I purchased my wedding suit from a national chain store with the intent of having the store make the alterations. At the time, I didn't think much of it, but as the wedding quickly approached and after retrying on my suit, I realized the suit didn't fit well and didn't feel overly confident that the store's alterations would give me the perfect fit for our wedding day. My fiancée was already frequently visiting B&J for the alterations on her wedding dress and was pleased with their friendly service and great craftsmanship. She finally convinced me to pay them a visit to see if they could alter my suit, even though it was only two weeks before the wedding. From the moment I met Barry & Jose I felt confident that they would do an amazing job, but still wasn't crazy about the suit. We got to talking and within 30 minutes of meeting me, Barry offered to take me to a store to find the suit of my dreams. The following day, I met Barry after he finished work and he took me to find a suit. In less than an hour, I walked out with a phenomenal Italian made suit that fit me like a glove and cost less than the mass produced mediocre suit I had previously purchased for myself. I was in absolute shock that someone would go this far out of their way just to so I would feel confident and not ask anything in return! By the end of the next day, B&J had finished the alterations on my new suit and I couldn't have been more pleased with the result. Barry and Jose are truly amazing. Normally, I hate anything having to do with obtaining clothes. The shopping, fitting, tailoring, none of it is enjoyable for me. When I got a new position at work, I needed new clothes and 5 pairs of pants later, I realized I needed them tailored and this time I wanted it done by professionals. These guys made it all bearable for me and put a huge smile on my face. It was clear after a few minutes that they are true believers in their craft and had a monumental sense of humor. They know all about the latest trends, but don't let it influence what works best for their clients. There was one hiccup in the form of a miscommunication so I had to make an extra trip to finish everything. Honestly, though, it was such a pleasure dealing with them that I didn't mind. My brother-in-law and my best friend both discovered these guys on their own, and have been raving about them for years. When I needed a place to get my wedding suit tailored, I knew this was where I had to go. When I tried my suit on, Barry recommended I exchange the jacket for a size up. Had I decided to keep the one I had, it would have been a ridiculous amount of money, and it still wouldn't have looked right. I have just discovered yelp, and have been commenting on my favorite and "not so" favorite places around town. I have been a customer of Jose and Barry's since they moved to Denville over 10 years ago. My husband rented his tuxes for our wedding there a decade ago. They have altered many sizes through my pre-pregnant, pregnancies, and post pregnant days. They are always super helpful when I am in a crazed rush. Both men have altered and hemmed for me on the spot. Before they came to town, I had tried another tailor in the area. I had several pants hemmed, and he took it upon himself to taper them. ( tapering was already out of style) I had also tried a local dry cleaner who did such a horrible job, I had to go back twice. She wound up losing my dry cleaning business because of it. Barry and Jose are great tailors, which is hard to come by today. They will bend over backwards to help you, which is also hard to come by these days. I would reccommend them to everyone. I had a skirt that needed a zipper replaced. I wore the skirt once and the zipper pulled to the threads were streched and had to be replaced again. I went back to them and the woman behind the counter acted like she did not know what I was talking about. She asked for a receipt when they take the cleaning ticket when picking up your garment. I asked to speal to a manager and she refused to give me a number. She wanted me to pay all over AGAIN for a new zipper. Not likely after the crappy zipper they put in the first time. The repair is costing more than the skirt. Bad business all around!!!! read more

DONT GO HERE!! This business is super unprofessional and unorganized. I needed something done the same day, because I had a flight early morning the next day (trip for my birthday). I called ahead to make sure they could do it for me, if not I would've went somewhere else. They told me they would get it done. So I went there tried everything on for them and paid, they said they'd have it done by the end of the day. So I left, I never received a call from them saying my things were finished so I went back and they were closed. I tried calling, messaging them on Facebook and nothing. The next day I got on my flight and called when they opened and they said they misunderstood ( I don't know how they misunderstood when I told them several times that I needed it done before my flight, they also said they'd have it done). Anyway, when I got home from my trip I went to pick up my things and I asked for a refund/discount because I didn't have my items to wear for my birthday and his attitude was incredibly rude and condescending. PLEASE DONT EVER GO HERE. He even called the police and told them I was acting belligerent when all I asked for was a refund because they ruined the plans I had for my birthday outfit. When my bridesmaid dress arrived 4 sizes too big, I knew I had to get it altered somewhere that would give the dress the care it deserved. I have been losing weight and wanted to wait until the last moment to have the alterations done. Jose told me two weeks before would be a good time to start, since there were A LOT of things to be done! Barry and Jose were honest and to the point, something I really admire in people. When I tried on the dress, it looked like I was 50 years older due to the fact that it was so incredibly large. While I was never unsure about their abilities, they were always reassuring me about how great I would look when they were done. And boy, were they right! No other bridesmaids had to get alterations, yet I had many people tell me that the dress looked the best on me. I chalk it up to the hard work, care, and love that Jose and Barry put into it. It fit perfectly. To me, there is a huge difference between getting something done and doing it right. Jose and Barry really do things right. I'm thin enough that off-the-rack clothes just don't fit right and I finally decided to do something about it. After scouting around for a place I could trust with challenging alterations, I tried B&J Custom Tailors with a sport coat that needed shoulders recut and a lot of volume taken out. It went so well that I had them do two more, including an extremely fine-woven Italian jacket that called for extreme precision. So far they've also recut three pairs of pants and four shirts, all with great success. I wish I had done this years ago. I've never had clothes that fit so well. People have commented that something about me looks better, but they haven't quite figured out what it is. The kind of work I needed was costlier than run-of-the-mill alterations at a typical point of sale, but for me the results are worth it. read more

So disappointed in this place. They charged me $150.00 to do four things to my daughter's prom dress - hem, anchor a sash, shorten two spaghetti straps, and move a jeweled clasp from the back (where it fell on her shoulder blade) to the front where it belonged. We picked it up an hour before the prom, since it hadn't been ready the day before as promised, and one and a half things had been done. The hem, and the sash had been tacked onto the back (instead of integrated into the seam as promised), and it had not even been hemmed with the dress, so trailed a good 6 inches along the floor. I had to try and pin the spaghetti straps down, hacked off the sash and tucked it in the back, and we just left the clasp on her back. Needless to say, she was very upset. When I brought the dress back to complain, I was told the bulk of the money was the hemming and they would move the clasp and fix the straps. Great - except it's a prom dress, and who wears those twice?? I'm pretty sure if I had asked for the adjustments without the hem, the price would still have been pretty hefty. They are very nice, and quick to disparage other tailor's work, but the job they did for me, along with the very expensive price tag, and the lack of resolution or even acknowledgement of the poor result, means I will not be returning to this business, and perhaps you should think twice about using them as well. I brought a bridesmaids dress there to be altered, and the alterations needed were pretty minor. The price tag was over $100 and NOT worth it. I found out that everyone else paid around $30 - $40 and theirs was more complicated. The one pregnant woman in our party paid $60 for her alterations and she needed the entire dress reconfigured for her belly. Why I was charged so much is beyond me. When I got the dress back, it did NOT fit well at all. The alterations were poorly done and in my opinion rushed. I gave them a few weeks to get this done. While they were very nice, I won't be going back. For the amount of money they charge for simple alterations, I should have gotten a dress that fit like a glove, and their shop should be more presentable. I should have taken my dress to the cleaners down the street. I probably would have gotten better quality at a much more affordable price: a mistake I will never make again. read more
