Goats cheese and caramelised onion tart... *swoon*

We were looking for somewhere special to go for our last meal whilst on holiday. We were stopping in West Witton where the well-renowned Wensleydale Heiffer is located. After looking at their menu and gulping at the prices we asked some locals whereabouts they would recommend and the resounding answer was Aysgarth Falls Hotel where we were told that the food was as good as The Wensleydale Heiffer (indeed the vegetarian options were, we were told, better) but a third of the price. So we booked a table and headed there that evening. When entering we went into the bar, it didnt look anything special but was welcoming and then got taken into the restaurant. Again, nothing fancy but the staff were lovely and very attentive. During the course of the evening the place really filled up so obviously other people had heard how good this place is! The food. The food. Where do i start? This place doesnt do huge portions but please dont let that put you off. We (myself, my partner and a friend) all love our food and hate pretentious nonsense (please beware that there were slates involved in some of the food here which would usually mean at least the removal of one star on a review!) but the sheer quality of this food was amazing. I opted for a vegetarian starter and main course and frankly they were some of the best food i had eaten. Truly lovely. Its more expensive than a normal pub int he area but very comparable with food in a nice pub in a city - steaks were about £19 for example. But truly the quality is divine - i cant recommend this place highly enough!!

A lovely country village pub with a roaring fire and a lot of people enjoying good food and great service (and dog friendly). The starters were go good the three of us couldn't choose which one we wanted, so a surprised staff member delivered their first (I'm sure) four starters for three people (there's nothing wrong with one for the table right!?). There was quite a strange silence fallen over the table as we devoured our starters. The creamy garlic mushrooms were amazing, the goats cheese peignet with pickled beetroot (for sharing) was delicious, and the pork spring rolls and pâté were met with equal delight. The mains of slow cooked pork belly (with roasts not mash), the steak & ale pie with chips and corn fed chicken supreme were all very well presented and more importantly, tasted amazing. The pork with LOTS of crackling was only let down let down by the lack of Yorkshire pudding (I know, not meant to have it with Pork dinner but I wanted one and it wasn't allowed due to exact numbers being made). The food was washed down with two bottles of white Rioja and followed by some beautiful desserts of chocolate brownie and Baileys Creme Brûlée with cookie. All in all, a perfect Sunday roast and for £122, was pretty impressive. Note: the staff were young but were absolutely honest and professional. It was great to see and they brought the food out promptly and couldn't have been nicer. A great find.

It really was a pleasure to hang around here, despite being ever so slightly chilly (I'm used to the balmy climate of London). The views are awesome, there's wildlife everywhere and plenty of dogs around if you're a dog person. The lunch was in the cruck barn and this is really an. Exceptional building, it looks old despite being only 10 years old! The decor is perfect. Except maybe the projection of the menu, not the biggest fan if that (it was hard to read). The food was impeccable, I had the pigeon and venison and it was perfect, the table generally seemed very pleased with their food so I think everything else was good too! The roast looked incredibly, serious food envy there. The drink selection, as you would expect in a decent traditional Yorkshire pub, was local and very very good. If you're in the area (or even just in the north east) then I would definitely recommend coming here for some food. Beware the roads however, super difficult to drive around.

The first night was a Thursday and the restaurant was not very crowded. However on Friday it was very busy and they were turning away people who did not have reservations. On Thursday night, we both had the lamb and it was really good. We almost ordered it again Friday but decided to try something different. On Friday my wife had the Wensleydale beef and I had the venison from the specials board on the wall. We shared a bottle of French red wine that the chef recommended to us. I requested that the chef prepare the venison the way he thinks it should be prepared. We can both honesty say that this was an excellent meal and a great night out. We will return here the next time we visit Leyburn. Reservations are highly recommended.

As you can imagine we were also pretty hungry after pedalling for a whole day, and we weren't carrying our smartest clothes either. First impression of the bar was that it was very cosy, warm and welcoming. We did feel a bit 'downmarket' amongst the rather tweedy, well-heeled types waiting for their meals but we ordered anyway and found the dining room was very pleasant - candle-lit and atmospheric. The food itself was, thankfully, marvellous and the portions were hearty enough for our ravenous appetites! Although it was probably an expensive option, we thought it was just about worth the money because we enjoyed our meals and the surroundings so much. (Then it was back to the tent!)
