Believe the reviews and give Ayala's Cafe a shot if you haven't already. Everything on our plate was cooked to perfection. I had the blueberry pancakes with eggs, bacon and hash browns. My wife had the chilaquiles plate with eggs, refried beans and bacon. The coffee was hot and tasty. The decor and subtle music playing in the background were a perfect fit for this small town in my opinion. We can't wait to make Ayala's a regular stop when we are in the area. Very modest place outside but JUST WAIT until you go inside and taste their food! We finally found a small cafe that not only isn't the food just off the charts delicious (and taste as if from scratch) but the service and the ambiance is just where you want to be for some delicious Mexican comfort food. We will drive the 40 minutes it takes us to get over to Hempstead and we have many other restaurants here close to choose from. It is worth the drive and you will NOT be disappointed. This place does not deserve the good reviews they receive. Got here at about 10:15 the Tuesday after Christmas. Everything was slow, took a few minutes to be seated. It took a while for someone to take our drink order, and then at least 15 minutes to get the drinks. Another 15 minutes to get be able to give our food order. We had only 5 people at the table. Then it was another 20 minutes to get our food. People on the other side of the restaurant came and went before we got our food. Now let's talk about the food. It was mediocre at best. The bacon tasted a bit "funny" And a couple of hours later, my 15-year-old grandson was throwing up. He only ordered the sausage patty and bacon. The price of the breakfast, which should be reasonable was over $65.00. It was not worth what I paid. I will NEVER go there again. Oh, and the only reason I gave it two stars was because the wait staff was friendly despite being inept. read more

Blown away by this nugget. We started with lattes and they were huge and delicious. Service was excellent. We've eaten at all the Mexican restaurants in Hempstead and have yet be impressed. This is by far the best. Breakfast was our purpose to be there and it was amazing. The refried beans and tortillas were awesome. Migas and more were fantastic. Bacon was crispy which I love. Ayala's is a fantastic, authentic restaurant with friendly hospitality. We drive half an hour to have breakfast there most Saturdays. All of the dishes we have had are exceptional from pancakes to breakfast burritos. The chilaquiles with the green sauce will leave you planning your next trip to this place. Ate there on Labor Day and wasn't expecting too much of a menu. Had the buffet and sampled both the beef and chicken fajitas. The beans were homemade as was everything that was on the menu. I didn't sample the enchiladas but they did look great. They do need to change out the buffet items a little more frequent, however. Glad we happened on this restaurant while heading to Prairie View A & M. The food is very good. The buffet is a must. It's only $7.99. Try ebeeything, including the cake dessert. The employees were nice. The parking lot was a good size. We had a trailer attached to our vehicle. read more

A whole lotta nope. Small little town outside of Houston but it was this vs BBQ ( darn the vegetarians in our group) . We didn't expect much but you hope the Tex Mex in Texas is at least edible. The salsa that was served with the warm ( hence two stars) chips was oddly red and straight out of a can. The chimichanga was fried in oil that smelled about ten years old. The rice was dry and the beans were gross. The vegetarian liked thier chili relleno but that was the only positive along with the jarritos( sodas). My enchiladas verde was definitely re heated about five times and I could barely eat three bites of it. Wish we ate in McDonald's and saved our $50. read more

On our way back to Houston to catch a flight back to L.A. We stopped at Ayala's not expecting much. The chorizo con huevo was great. I asked them to make a breakfast taco with chorizo and papa and it brought me back to my childhood visiting in Nuevo Laredo. This is just what my stomach was craving in Texas. I ate here last as I haven't had MEXICAN food in awhile. Now I remember why. It is truly MEXICAN as the waitress could hardly speak English. She was nice, though, and so I pointed on the menu to get Fajitas for one. I was served some fajitas but I guess they were short as the put some sausage (hot dog wiener) on the plate, lol.
