Since I have previously participated in Axe Throwing I have something to compare this experience with. Upon arriving we were asked if we had a reservation, we did not. We were told the entire evening was booked, but informed us that they are open 7 days a week and to make an reservation to come back another day. Deflated we left, but I decided to look online and check out availability. Behold there WERE still appointments available. We decided to grab food and come back for our scheduled time. The instructor was firm which I appreciated, because of the safety risk involved. However based on my previous experience I prefer a personal coach or at least multiple coaches going around to help you with form and determine why you are not hitting the target. I did appreciate the various types of blades, we tried about 6 different axes. It was nice to experience the variety, but again with no one guiding you adding variety will not be useful if your form is bad. They offered games laid out, but it was better in my previous experience, because the coach kept score. They offer a game show, had connect four and corn hole which all seemed rather random. I was also not confident that Covid safety measures were implemented thoroughly between groups. I felt uneasy of the axes were sanitized and tried my best to sanitize them. All in all, we threw axes, had some fun, but I don't feel ready for the apocalypse. read more

I had read local stories about how axe throwing businesses have been sprouting up across the SD area recently. We came here as a large party on a weekend afternoon as the event organizer found a Groupon offer that saved us some money for a 90 minute session. After signing a waiver and getting a brief tutorial from one of the instructors, we spread out across three of the throwing lanes and began tossing axes at the targets. I seemed to fare better earlier on and settled on a two-handed throwing technique. I think because I started fooling around with a lighter, smaller axe and also tossing with just one hand, my success rate dipped over time. Our lane of five players participated in a few competitive games (i.e. highest cumulative score after five rounds of three throws each, aiming for the seven point circle at the top left and top right corners of the target board, scoring an axe in each of the three target circles) to pass the time after spending several minutes practicing. The only nitpicky comment I have is that I wish they had better circulation and/or air conditioning inside the facility. It wasn't too bad at the time we went, but with the extended summer heat wave, I can imagine a stifling feeling inside on certain extremely hot days. read more

Price: This place opened 3 weeks ago and we scored a Groupon deal for 2, 3, 5, or 10 per group for 1.5 hours. Parking: 3 assigned spaces with 1 shared Handicap space. Recommend to carpool with your group. Street parking is limited especially during brunch on a Sunday due to all the nearby restaurants. Venue: In a warehouse-like venue similar to a brewery or boot camp gym. To your left is a game area of over-sized Connect Four, Jenga, and Corn Holes. Perfect to distract little ones or while you are waiting for your turn. To your right is the check-in counter and 6 caged lanes. Tables are in the middle and two All Gender restroom stall. How to play: Up to 5 players share one lane with 1-one pound axe. After signing a waiver, Austin gave us a quick run down of the rules and how to throw. You stand in your athletic stance with your dominate leg in back. Your elbows at 90 degree inward towards your body with one fluid motion when you throw. No need to flick your wrist, its' one continuous motion. Stand behind the red line to throw and your axe should always remain between the two red lines when transitioning to the next player for safety. Each player is given 3 tries and you rotate throughout the 1.5 hours. When it's your first time, you are happy if your axe lands on the target. If you want a challenge, on the table is a set of cards to explain 3 games if you wish to play teams or individual, by points or color system. The axe will bounce and skip a few times. If it's on the target, use a lever system up and down to remove the axe safely. TIP: Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water (There's no AC but there's a fan above the lanes and they do sell chips and drinks). So much fun!!! We went here to celebrate a birthday. My friend rented a stall for an hour and a half. The pricing was around $133 for 4 of us. So it came out to about $33 per person. We got a little axe throwing session in the beginning, they make it a lot easier than it actually is. But with practice I'm sure we could've been that good too!!! I made a reservation here for my boyfriends birthday, and all in all, it was pretty fun! The coach was knowledgeable and it felt safe enough. The only thing I didn't like was we had to wait on 2 other groups, one of whom didn't show up on time, so we ended up waiting to all start together. They did give us back that time at the end, but it made us a little late for our following plans. They keep it interesting by introducing different axes throughout the experience, and that was fun to switch things up. But there is a lack of air conducting and it gets really hot and stuffy if you're not by one of the fans. But our group had a nice time, and I would definitely recommend this activity if you're looking to try something new! read more

Axe throwing is quite the fad right now and I've been wanting to give it a try ever since my Instagram started flooding with friends pretending to be lumberjacks over the past year. I mean, who doesn't want to go and throw weapons for fun!? I was excited that my friend's boyfriend chose this as a birthday outing as it gave me an excuse to get off of my butt and actually try it. I wasn't sure what to expect, but for $30/person, I was surprised to find the facility pretty bare. It's literally a small warehouse looking room with a few lanes set up for axe throwing, a couple of metal pub-height tables and chairs, and that's about it. I would have liked to see something a little more themed and intricate. I can't help but think of a neighboring restaurant in North Park called One Door North, which is a glamping themed restaurant. How perfect would that be fore AxeVentures? Anyway, I digress... The employees were friendly and got us checked in as quickly as possible so that we could take advantage of our allotted time. I would like to go again, but not for the price. It just seems like a lot of money for what it is and what you get. We took my dad here for his birthday back in January and he had a BLAST. After looking around at axe throwing places in OC/LA, I realized that San Diego had much better options. I reached out to AxeVentures about their Groupon promo and was told that it wouldn't be able to apply since we were looking to schedule on a weekend. The rep was still able to give me a discount, which I really appreciated! When we arrived, we were the only ones there and the employees were very attentive. We were each given a lane (there were 3 of us) and the employees gave us a run through of the best practices, things to avoid when throwing. You get 1.5 hours to throw, which is plenty of time, no matter your group size. If you go with less than 4 people, you will most likely share a lane, but hey you can make some new friends! When you check in they will have you sign a waiver and then show you over to your lane. They instructor goes over some throwing tips and tells you about the games to score your throws. They also have giant Jenga, corn hole, and connect 4 you can play while waiting for your lane or in between. This is on 30th street, so parking can be a little difficult, so be prepared for that. They do have a few spots in front, but those are usually taken. They also have some snacks, water, and soda for sale. Had a bike night meet up here and it was AWESOME! The neighborhood is great and there's food and drinks nearby. When we came in we were greeted promptly and had an instruction period on how to be safe with and properly throw the axes. There was so much to throw! Like 4 different types of axes, a SHOVEL and saw blades! There is a small learning curve, and if you don't get it you can always ask for help. Eric was our coach and he did a good job of keeping an eye on us and making sure we were having fun, and we also got to meet the manager Jorge that made sure we had good lanes and a great time. We had a blast! We had 22 people in our group including 10 kids from age 6 to 16. We had three coaches who were awesome and helped everyone to have as much fun as possible. This is a great place to learn how to axe throw! My group of 11 sat at the stools behind the axe-throwing lanes. There are 6 lanes of which we had 2. You have to sign a waiver before going to your lane, but this can be done online quickly (instructions are at the front). It's a fun environment in which to learn a new skill and have fun doing it! It is a bit scary to be near a moving axe, so I kept my eyes on the axe thrower, but it's a really unique and enjoyable experience. It was my first time axe throwing so I didn't know what to expect! It was a group of 6 of us on a Wednesday at 3pm and we were greeted with the smell of wood chips and agro music, PERFECT ambience for Axe throwing! Our Axe expert Juan was frickin hilarious! And he did an amazing job on referencing his Axe jokes so as to not make it super corny. With a group like ours there was also other activities we can occupy our time with while we waited for our turns like giant sized Jenga and Connect 4. The overall experience was great. Nice spacious area, different types of axes and throwing items to choose from so you don't get frustrated because you suck throwing a tomahawk or competition axe. My fave is the one that looks like a pizza shovel. If you ever go you'll know what I'm talking about. Juan also checked in with us and provided tips on how to land an epic hit. He definitely wasn't an "AXEHOLE". Felt like we were throwing axes at our homies back yard. They even offer glow in the dark axe throwing! And when their rage room opens we will definitely be back. To be fair, I have some ax throwing experience from some time in Toronto, Canada and a place in SF. This was during comic con on a Saturday evening around 9pm I think. We were able to walk in, but most of the time their slots are filled with reservations. The cages average around 4 people and my group was 4 people. They do safety instruction and then one-handed throwing instructions. Personally, I've only ever been taught two-handed throwing, so this was new to me. I think its easier for beginners to do two-handed throwing as most people are a little weak to hold the ax straight with only one hand. They have 3 different size axes and a sharp shovel as the 4th ax. I felt the instruction was a little lacking as they didnt always reinforce what they had first taught us so you could see people's form breakdown if they werent told what they were doing wrong. In any case, my group took turns throwing and eventually were able to get the axes to stick to the target. My best advice for you is to adjust your starting position forward or backward as adjusting where you stand adjusts the rotation of the ax to get it in the ideal spot for sticking into the target. Everything else is just keep straight and having a solid follow-through. In any case, throwing axes is always fun and I always recommend trying it at least once. read more

ITS AXE-ITING!!! "Throwing axes as hard as you can is boring" - said no one ever. Interesting leisure activity. Shared lanes, 1.5 hrs, couple of axes, and good friends. We took up 4 lanes and roughly 4-5 people per lane. Sign a waiver, listen to the instructor, and then let the AxeVenture begin. We had a large party and reservations, they took care of us by serving pizza (obviously not the best quality... it was cold and stale). THE EXPERIENCE. I oddly felt like an axe murderer without being a murderer. Throwing axes is not an average daily activity nor one that you see or do often. At first, it's a kind of scary. Hesitation lurks before throwing "am I holding it right" "do I just throw it" "am I going to get stabbed by someone else's axe throwing". After a couple throws you feel more confident and get competitive. I started throwing the axe as fast and hard as I can... what a great way to take out any inner aggression. HA! I like the double-edge small axes. Way easier to throw. I've hit the bulls eye maybe around 6 times. The advice we tell ourselves and others "imagine someone's face" LMFAO we are so terrible. But you have been warned 1) sometimes the axe ricochet off of the boards and flies back at you. Try to stay behind the red line, maybe even staying behind the white line after a throw. To wrap up our time, the instructor tells everyone about the game to end the session. Each lane is given a bright orange circular sticker that we can draw on (someone drew an anus on one of the stickers) and he will randomly place it on the target board for every lane. Each person gets two throws, if you hit the target once you get an extra throw. If you hit the sticker 2x you get free merchandise from the venue (excluding the Viking hat). Difficulty level: near impossible! TAKE NOTE. This annoyed me... some of the lanes had new boards and some had very bad warped boards. The staff gets lazy to change the boards so they make random claims like it's better for throwing, etc etc. LIES. The axes will not latch to the boards if they are extremely warped. You can ask to have the board changed but that will be approximately 15 minutes OF YOUR PAID TIME to have it switched out. Management, why can't the staff change the warped boards at the beginning of the day?! It should be a task to do before opening up shop. It is as simple as that. Overall Impression: The coach was informative. Definetly anti-climatic because I thought it was more intense. Def got a workout from it. My favorite part, was using all the different axes. Surprisingly easy, very fun, and a great date night idea! Came here on a monday night around 8:30 pm and was able to walk in (no reservation) with a group of 4. Cost is $31/person but I saw on other reviews that there are groupons available for $30/2 people which is way cheaper!! We were told another group was coming in soon so they asked us to wait so that they could do the safety briefing for us all together. While we waited, there were some games for us to play like a big stack of jenga and a HUGE connect 4. Safety briefing was very short and simple and we were able to each have our own lane because it wasn't busy! Every few minutes they would come out with new weapons for us to try (axe, lighter throwing axe, spade, and shruiken) to make it more interesting. There are also games w/clipboards that you can play for points to make it more competitive/fun as well! Overall I really enjoyed our experience and would definitely want to come back! The only downside I saw was that I did think $30 was a bit pricey for a 1.5 hr session, and we were also cut off on time because they closed at 10. I understand it's easier for staff to do a single safety briefing but it wasn't that extensive and I felt like they could have just done it twice. It's possible that if we started throwing axes it would interfere with the other guests' ability to hear what the instructor was saying if they did do a second briefing so it didn't bother me that much. read more
