I haven't had a cupcake - or traditional western-style cake, for that matter - since I moved to…read moreHong Kong almost 5 months ago. The craving for light and fluffy white cake topped with sweet, thick frosting had grown to epic proportions. What's a girl to do? Search for 'cupcake' on the Yelp app, of course!
The search led me to Wan Chai, just a quick tram ride away from my flat in Happy Valley. After looking over the display case with starry eyes, I chose what is typically my favorite flavor: good ol' vanilla. I realize it may seem a bit ridiculous to visit a cupcake shop to only leave with a vanilla cupcake, but I know what I like!
Once home, I carefully unwrapped the vanilla cupcake adorned with colorful sprinkles (ahh, childhood!) and took a bite. It felt good and tasted even better. I meant to savor it and eat it slowly, but suddenly the entire cupcake had vanished - and no, I'm not sorry. The craving may have diminished but the sweet memory lives on.
Now, for the cupcake breakdown: the cake itself was flawless. Moist, light, and fluffy - not a dry crumb in site. The frosting, however, is not the type that I prefer. This frosting was whipped and very light, and the buttercream flavor was very pronounced. I personally prefer a more dense, thick frosting that screams vanilla, not buttercream. But it still hit the spot and was quite good.
It all comes down to personal preferences, right? Still, Kisses is a solid choice when I'm battling a cupcake craving that just won't go away.
