I injured my back (pinched nerve), and my primary care physician prescribed opiates. The pain kept coming back when I stopped talking pain medications, so I decided my regular provider wasn't cutting it anymore. Went to Awender Chiropractic, and I can't say enough good things about the place. Dr. Awender is lovely, and the woman at the front desk is super helpful. My back is feeling a lot better, and I stopped taking pain medication for it! He got me to where I needed to be so that I could start exercising again (even yoga hurt). I came in for a massage and adjustment and would give Dr. Awender 4 stars but the massage 0 stars if I could so I guess I will average it out. I've had bad experiences with drop tables before so it was great to see a doctor who knew what he was doing and didn't cause further pain. I found the constant up and down movement of the table quite unnecessary and slightly annoying. I understand it might be useful for patients who may have problems turning over or limited mobility issues but why couldn't I just flip over on the table instead of having to wait for it to go up, turn around, and wait for it to go down for every little thing. Dr. Awender was pleasant and informative. I would recommend him for anyone who doesn't like to hear their backs being cracked! But skip the massage! Unless they get a new masseuse. I expected a more therapeutic massage since it IS in a chiropractic office but basically, if I wanted someone to rub lotion on my back, I would have saved my money and asked my BF to do it. The massage table was loose and squeaky and it kept rocking back and forth. I was slightly afraid it might tip over or something. In the middle of the massage, the masseuse suddenly hopped on the table and straddled me to further rub more lotion on my back. Not sure why she did that or if it was even necessary but a little warning would have been nice. Her phone went off a few times during the session and she made no attempts to turn it off. A chiropractor who knows what they are doing AND does it without the old-skool $popping and cracking? Yes, Dr.Awender's practice is too good to be true! After only a few visits, years of back and neck issues from sitting on my uncomfortable computer chair at work have been reversed. I am updating my review for Dr. Awender. His gentle care is far better than any chiropractor I have ever seen. I think most of my friends would agree that while some do need ongoing care, my experience with Dr. Awender is that he fixes the problem quickly and effectively. After 2 to 3 visits I am good to go until I don't care for my back and throw it out again. He is informative and gentle and fixes my sister's serious neck problem in 3 visits. The masseuse, I believe rents space from the Chiropractic office and I while I didn't care for him it had less to do with the masseur and more to do with my desired massage. I like rip apart deep tissue massage and muscle straitening which takes a specialist and costs a lot more. He was not that, but that doesn't make him a bad masseur. read more

He also uses a tendon release technique that helps tramendously with very painful severe tendonitis ,there not so many chiropractors nationwide that know how to do it. Dr. Awender provides a chiropractic practice that is non-intrusive and pain free. The first chiropractor I visited had employed the whole twisting and popping routine...I found it very unpleasant. Dr. Awender, however, uses a "drop table" (I believe that's what it's called?), that allows for adjustments to be made free of forceful twisting and what not. A year or so ago, my back went out...lower back pain to the point where I couldn't walk. Dr. Awender adjusted me and got me on a plan with Physical Therapy, and I was up and running. He guided me through the MRI process, which was how I discovered I had a herniated disc. I stop by for visits every month or so. I always feel a lot more loose and strong after leaving sessions. It's been two sessions, and I'd say the experience is between a 4 and a 5 if taking both the massage and exam into consideration, but since more recent reviews appeared to round down, I'll round up because they really are definitely much better than I expected, especially compared to another doctor that has a 5 star average, accepts Kaiser, but refuses to adjust anything other than the spine. While looking for a chiropractor that is on the Kaiser network and will do more than just spine adjustment, I came across a few in the area. Naturally I checked Yelp and the business websites for info. There was a special deal on the their website for massage and chiropractic exam, so I decided to give it a try. The massage was nice and a great bargain, even if it's not a full hour, then again, I rarely find any 1 hour massages to be more than 45 min of actual massage. Dr. Awender is quick and does wonders with his adjustments. I like his style, efficiency, and that I don't have to explain too much for him to find my problem areas. While waiting, I see many happy and regular patients, which made me wonder why their Yelp review doesn't fit at all with what I experienced. Maybe the happy patients don't want to share because they want to keep the doctor to themselves? I decided to do my part so others will not be discouraged by some of the reviews, and miss out on a really good doctor. Dr. Awender is the best chiropractor I have ever had (and I've had a few). Not only is he pleasant and professional, he doesn't rely on cracking and popping to get the job done. Instead, his state of the art drop table allows him to use gentle pressure applied to certain tough spots to let your body do the work. I have been coming here for the past 4 years plus because of the quality of his work. He even works with my gastrointestinal issues caused by a hiated hernia by simply pulling the stomach down from where it gets stuck from the outside! Best of all, he's never pressed me for multiple day a week appointments as others have and his rates are reasonable. My wife and i have been seen Dr. Jeff since he took office here is Sunnyvale. We go for a tune up on our bodies. With the stresses of the silicone valley it can get pretty bad sometimes. Whenever we go to get an adjustment Dr Awender has always gone above and beyond and them some to make sure we are feeling right before we leave. I cannot tell you how many times I walked in feeling broken and then left like I just had a complete overhaul. I would highly recommend him for any of your Chiropractic needs. I visited in order to receive treatment for, and find information about, some mild lower back pain I've been having. I was overcharged and underwhelmed. It was a sales pitch to get me to visit three more times the following week (it cost me $90+ to pop my joint, thats not how you encourage return business, so no thanks I won't be following up). It also required 5 different office visits to receive my 1 "treatment" and to pay my bill due to strange business hours. Bought a groupon for a massage and it was sooooo awesome. Davy was wonderful. His specialty is deep tissue which I didn't even know I needed. He released knots I didn't know existed! He did a full body deep tissue and now I feel brand new. If you schedule another apt after and pay with cash it's only $40! Super worth it for an hr massage by an experienced professional. I can tolerate an incompetent doctor, but I cannot tolerate an unethical doctor. I would have given a lower rating to Dr. Awender if I could. Not only has he proved incompetent as a doctor, he has also shown a complete disregard for ethical behavior - After reading his reply to my review, I did contact him for a refund of the fee - he replied to me saying that the fee refund had a "fine print" and that I should have asked for it within the first 3 visits. However, I do remember him telling me by the third visit that it takes about 9 sessions for patients to get better - so in any case my asking for a refund would have been premature. In any case, a misdiagnosis clearly shows incompetence on Dr. Awender's part. My biggest gripe though is that Dr. Jeff Awender also wrote back saying that he would give me the requested refund, provided I took off my previous negative review of him. This is seriously unethical and a big lapse of judgment from a professional doctor - I wrote back to him declining to remove the review and I haven't heard back from him since. I am not hopeful of receiving my money back, but in case I do, I shall update this review. I do hope that after reading this, fellow people will stay away from Dr. Jeff Awender. read more

Not recommended. Business phone not always in working order. Dr. Awender made unnecessary comments about how MRI tests are not that much money. Unempathetic and out of touch with peoples' financial needs. Not the friendliest, not the best communicator. Do not always receive a follow up call from office when needed. I love getting massage Groupons/Livingsocial deals, but this one ended up being a little bit of a rip off. I purchased the 60minute (versus 30minute) massage and ended up getting ~25minutes on the table. To be fair I did show up 10 minutes late to the office, but because it was a chiropractors office, there was a stack of forms to fill out! I asked if I could reschedule the massage since I knew by the time Id fill out the forms/undress the massage time would fly by, and the receptionist told me there was a $15 reschedule fee [which is half of what I paid for the groupon, so not worth it] and the masseuse HAD to be done by 1. I figured he had somewhere else to be and finished the forms. I'm used to losing 5min before/after a massage for that undress/redress time, but I was really upset that I lost HALF of my massage time with no consideration from the receptionist or the masseuse himself. As for the massage, I'd like to think it could have been very beneficial to have the 60 minutes. Dave was very friendly, talked to me throughout the massage (which was great for distracting me from the pain), and seemed really passionate about his trade. Was hoping to find a new chiropractor from the experience, but so not the case. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Jeff for quite some time. I came in initially for neck and upperback pain. I now come in for routine maintenance care which I feel makes a tremendous difference. I say with in three or four visits I was feeling back to normal. I feel he is very knowledgeable and competent practitioner. He is very personable and pleasure to speak to. I've been seeing Dr Awender for 3+ years now and I refer him to all my friends. Sometimes it's even become one of our "meet ups" :-) Annette at reception is an angel and a great conversationalist! I never really trusted chiropractic care before coming here. He tests your strength and doesn't crack you but uses adjustment table and other activator devices so your body doesn't get addicted to it. I have several degenerative and bulging discs for 12 years and this is one of the only professionals I trust with my back. Dr A always sets me straight. The chiropractor was great but the massage is not too worth it to me. I was expecting a massage with lotion or oils. But he just gave me a dry massage with my clothes still on. He released my hips the way I know athletic trainers too help relieve tightness which was pretty cool. But he focused little time on my back and shoulders which I basically got like 5 mins on each side of my back. Which I am not happy about. read more

I'm so grateful to have found Dr. Jeff Awender! I've been to other chiropractors (the bone cracking kind) but felt like I was part of a factory line and the results were ok but didn't last long. I needed a new solution. I went to see Dr. Awender for a crippling issue with my hand which was really effecting my daily life. I thought it might be carpal tunnel syndrome but after doing a couple quick strength tests on my hand he said its probably an issue in my neck. I was puzzled but when he pressed on a spot on my neck and I immediately felt the pain in my hand, I knew I'd come to the right place! Dr. Awender takes his treatment to the next level and assesed my entire body. Which was great since I sit a computer all day and have typical issues associated with a desk job. He did additional strength tests in my legs which were embarrassingly weak and little shaky!! I was out of "alignment" in that one leg was slightly longer than the other and my pelvis slightly out of alignment. This was the first time I'd been on a drop table and was pleasantly surprised. The table movements are painless and subtle but the results were significant, and your entire body gets treated. Once the treatment on the drop table was complete, he did the same strength tests and my legs were amazingly stronger and no shaking!! He then moved onto the treatment in my neck and hand. He did additional work on my neck and used a special laser on my hand to help reduce the swelling. Throughout the entire session, he talks through what he's doing and why. He's very knowledgable and experienced and made me feel very comfortable and safe. The next day, I was pretty sore all over, the day after a bit less, and on the third day the soreness was gone. I went back for a 2nd treatment on the 3rd day and wasn't sore like the first time and could actually open a jar without screaming! It's been 3 months and my hand is fine. I will continue to see Dr. Awender and I'm truly grateful to have found him. Also, if you don't have insurance, his rate is very reasonable!!! Thank you Dr. Awender! read more

I'm always nervous when finding a new doctor without any recommendations from friends, but I found Awender Chiropractic through a groupon. My back and hips needed some serious TLC especially after having my baby. I was and am still very satisfied with the care I receive from Dr. Awender. He listens to my aches and addresses them along with some suggestions on stretches or strength training. I have never had a bad experience and am always comfortable. I enjoy having his office so close to work so I can stop in quickly and get out quickly. You definitely feel taller and lighter when leaving his office. I have recommended him to friends. read more

I have been going to Dr. Awender for years -- ever since he bought the practice. I suffered an accident that left me with a life-long complicated, chronic condition, involving my back, knees, rib heads and neck. Dr. Awender has relieved my severe pain, more times than I can count! He is dedicated and once, when severe pain had me in it's grip, he came in on a Sunday night to treat me. His receptionist, Annette, has always been great at getting me in, even last minute. Since I never know when the pain will hit me, it is nice to have this flexibly. So many other offices are rigid in their scheduling. Dr. Awender comes from a large family of Chiropractors and he is very knowledgeable. I have been to many chiropractors, over the years, and I can say that Dr. Awender is the best! I trust him! read more

This review does not include the massage. That is wonderful and I can't recommend Davey enough. As for the chirocpractic, I came to Dr. Awender after a double lung transplant. I had chronic migraine and needed help. After an overly brief conference that cost too much for the time and energy put into it, the doctor barely looked at my records and did not even take x-rays. He seemed nervous and in a hurry. He said he would take it easy given my medical history. He seemed to shuffle people in for the same 5 minutes or less treatment. He used a little tap machine on my shoulders and when he put me on the drop table he didn't even check to see I was in the right position. It was not. Needless to say I tolerated wasting my money twice and decided this was going nowhere. If you are into a very slow and subtle treatment then go for it. My gut and lack of confidence told me this guy is not my kind of chiropractor. Also I was told I could get my money back when my medicare was billed. It has been at least 7 months and every time I ask about it I get some rehearsed speech about the computer system being changed over. Seems sketchy to me. I have not had worse!! We booked 2 one-hour massage sessions today from 3pm-5pm. When we got to the clinic, the receptionist told us that we got our time slots mixed up and we were supposed to be there from 2pm-4pm. I can understand miscommunication happens, and it is nobody fault intentionally, but what I could not understand is the receptionist kept on defending her position by saying she didn't book us from 3pm-5pm because there is a regular patient scheduled at 4pm. I explained to her that there must have been a miscommunication, because we didn't want to miss our appointments either. I tried to be understanding, so I asked the lady see if we could just re-schedule for the next available time slots, then doctor came out and said we had already missed our fist session, we could only continue with our second session. I thought to myself "fine, since I am already here", so I started filling out the paperwork. The stack of paperwork includes four pages, besides the basic medical history(usual for new patients), there was also 1 page I needed to indicate where muscle aches are on a human diagram and note the kind of pain and level of severity. I stood there and started filling out everything they asked me to, and five minutes later, the receptionist said to me " you should try to wrap it up, you are using up your massage time". I then started getting upset and thought to myself "why didn't you tell me there is paperwork to fill out and they are not something I can finish in a few minutes?! instead she stood there and watched me as if she didn't even care" I got even more upset when she then told me I only have about 40 minutes left because I took too long filling out the paper work. I couldn't help to ask her to cancel everything and just give us a refund. She then replied impatiently "you will have to call Amazon!" (they were booked through Amazon). At this point, not only I was not in a mood for any massages, I was so upset that I felt I had to spend money just to be pissed off. Then doctor tried to make things better by offering a "special rate" of $20 for one hour session NEXT TIME we come. Something I don't get: if I didn't received any services, why am I being charges?! if we had a mix-up on appointment times, why did it have to be the customer's fault? if my first experience is so unpleasant that I would rather get a refund after all this, how is a "special rate" that we still need to pay for the NEXT TIME we come going to help? I ended calling Amazon right away and explained what happened and got our refund. Amazon has good customer services, as usual. I will never come back to this place nor recommend it to anyone. read more
