No one has reviewed this place in quite a few years, and based on my recent experience the high rating does not reflect the current business.
Let me just say that I did not even get to the point of renting a car from this place. I called with a few questions about a possible rental and the customer service was abominable, abhorrent, just straight-up awful.
I called a few weeks ahead of my intended rental date to ask about the best way to make the reservation (over the phone, online, with this location, with the airport location, etc.) and about the probability of securing a particular car. Now, I know this is extremely rare and most rental places don't guarantee a particular car make, but the one I wanted is common for Avis' fleet--it's even a listed model on their website. I was told that it couldn't be guaranteed, but if I called ahead they could check availability and try their best to secure it for me.
So...I called back a week ahead of the rental--having already made my reservation online. I spoke to the same representative (a man whom by his accent I would presume is Ethiopian), and began by reminding him of our previous conversation. (Note: I never got his name and wish I had because I would have definitely included it here and in the report I submit to Avis.) He immediately asked to call me back and for my number--didn't give any time frame as to when he would return my call, nor did he stay on the line long enough to hear my actual follow-up question/request.
I ended up calling back an hour later after not getting a call back. He immediately went into his schpeel (sp) that I had already heard before about them not being able to secure a specific car make and model, how they have a huge fleet and it depends on the availability across the fleet. Blah, blah, blah. Again, I was calling to follow up on this conversation that we had already had--where at the end he had told me I could call ahead and they would do their best to secure the particular car for me. To say the least, I was extremely frustrated. I told him that he had already shared this information with me and had advised me to call back. I was just looking for confirmation that they would do their best to try to get the car. Instead, I ended up having the same conversation twice with someone too dense enough to understand the nature of my follow-up call.
In all honesty I got heated and my tone became tense; and he responded in return by HANGING UP ON ME. I did NOT yell at him, use expletives or throw insults in any way. When he started to repeat what I had already heard (keep in mind, after I had reminded him of our previous conversation and what he shared with me), I interrupted him to try to better explain what I was calling for.
In contrast, I called Enterprise and got superb customer service. It was quick and easy, the representative answered all of my questions--went above and beyond to tell me what my rate would be, what discounts would apply, what additional discounts she could give me, and took my reservation over the phone while including in the notes section my request for a specific car. To note, these are all things I had tried to find out through Avis--both calling this particular branch and their customer service number but to no avail. The Enterprise representative, of course, also shared that they could not guarantee a specific car but told me to call back a day before my rental to follow up on my request. What's more, she ALSO said that they may not be able to put me in my preferred car the first day of my rental, but could switch me out for it later on.
The difference in service was a complete 180. Please save your time and energy and do not do business with this Avis branch--and perhaps Avis in general. And for those who are wondering, I called the Enterprise location at 1221 22nd St, NW, which has received high ratings by Yelpers. This is why Yelp works and why I hope updating these outdated reviews for Avis will benefit others. read more
