If you have a rental scheduled for 9 AM, make sure to arrive by 8 AM, or you'll end up leaving at 10 AM. This location has the slowest rental processing I've ever encountered. It takes the team about 35 minutes upstairs, and then you'll have to wait in a hot basement for another 25 minutes. It's ironic because if I return the car just one minute late, I get charged a full day's late fee, but they can start my rental an hour late without any refund for me. I've rented from here over a dozen times, and it's consistently a terrible experience. The unfortunate part is that the staff are trying their best; however, they simply aren't adequately staffed to handle the business volume. Having only two people in the basement processing 300 returns, cleaning cars, and checking out customers is absurd. After you return the car, make sure to check your receipt, as they will likely fraudulently charge you for a fuel service fee even when the receipt indicates that the car was returned with a full tank. This has happened to me nearly every single time, and I have to wait 5 days for the dispute to be resolved. This is how they treat Presidents Club Avis customers. Can't imagine how people booking on third party apps are handled. read more

Do not rent from here. This is the 2nd time out of the last three times I rented where I made a reservation weeks before, and paid upfront, and they didn't have any cars available. Asked me if I wanted to be notified when one is available flippantly like I didn't reserve a car for a specific reason. Now nothing in the area has cars available so I have no other options but taking $250 Ubers each way to where I'm going that they won't reimburse me for. I was one of the dozens of people who waited in line for hours on Sunday, Aug 17 because of the Great Key Mishap. Whomever was supposed to open at 7 didn't show, and apparently there was NO extra second set of keys anywhere in the five boroughs. The two Avis employees on the ground were pleasant but not helpful. They kept saying their management wasn't responding to them. As the line grew, we had the idea of calling a locksmith. We did that, after which someone found a way to crawl through a window to get into the office. Still, apparently they didn't have a key to the box with the car keys. The locksmith reported that he was ten minutes away, and MAGICALLY, the keys showed up just before he got there. The fun didn't end though, as the two employees on the ground were apparently only trainees, and took roughly 20 minutes to process each of the first ten customers (we timed them). They eventually got the hang of it, though the shoddy dot matrix printer didn't help matters. It kept printing mirror images of the contracts, and the guy downstairs at the cars couldn't read them. Really, it felt like an operation in a developing country. Such a pathetic mess. read more

My husband pulled up to return the car and paused to take a picture of the gas meter for record of returning with a full tank. The employee shouted excessively at my husband, tried to close the car door on him, and then got in his face when he stepped out of the car as if he were about to hit him. Absolutely wild behavior. Literally the worst rental experience I ever had. Went NC Raleigh airport to rent a car. I paid for a sports car. Waited over a hour on line with no AC. When I finally got someone they told me they only had 1 car available for what I paid for. I took the car even tho it got stains and dirt all over the car. My partner and I had a reservation for a car at 7 am this morning. We arrived on time to find out that apparently the one key that opens the facility wasn't placed in the lockbox at the location. At around 8:30 am, a regional manager finally came by with what was supposed to be a master key, and it did not work. Another employee, Felix, came to tell us that someone was coming in from lower Manhattan to open up the office, but they told us no one gave them an ETA. No one came as far as I know. At 9:30, someone on the line had the initiative to call a locksmith and we on the line agreed to help him pay for it. Alex, one of the employees present, had asked management to call in a locksmith earlier but they never replied to him. Thankfully, the locksmith wasn't necessary, because one of the customers found a loose window and the employees were able to break into the office about 5-10 minutes later. Even when they were able to get into the office, we still had to wait for the employee who was responsible for last night's closing to drive from their home to bring the keys. We didn't get our contract until 9:53, and we didn't get our car until 10:15. During this time several people were on the line with customer service, who did absolutely nothing to help us clarify the situation nor did they offer us alternative plans or information on how to refund our reservations or transfer to other facilities. We found the management at this facility and the customer service at Avis deeply incompetent and negligent. It is outrageous that there is not a procedure in place when an employee closes improperly. read more

AVOID at all costs. Avis is not a true car rental service. Their reservation service is on a first come first serve bases. We have tried using them twice now if different locations (Phoenix, and San Antonio). Both times they told us they did not have our rental car available. At the Phoenix location, we had to wait over 2.5hrs to finally get an acceptable rental for 6 passengers. In San Antonio, they just didn't have a vehicle available, and at no point did they ever try to contact me to advise me of this. I got to the counter at 10:30pm to find out they rented all, and didn't have one for us. We ended up having to take two Ubers around all vacation, which was absolutely ridiculous. It hurts to write this review because of a long time I always used Avis. After this last incident, I no longer can. First, when I went to pick up my pre-paid rental, I got in line and the representative at the counter informed me they have no cars. They'll be getting some from Newark in the next couple of hours and they would call me if they got some. They never called me, but I went to eat some breakfast and went back to check in a couple hours later. They finally got a car in (not the premium one I asked for but, we were just driving a couple hours to NJ). I let that slide, but unfortunately, while in NJ somebody rear-ended me and I had to call the police. There was no damage to the car, and no damage to us but they wanted the insurance (which, yes I always pay for) for the car. I handed them the stack of papers in the car, and no information about insurance. I called the location. Just routed me to Avis customer service. An hour on the side of the road and no answers about the policy number about the car. The officer said we had 24 hours to submit it. At the location they said they had no information about the insurance, to call customer support. I called about 3 hours worth, in a back and forth pass along from person to person. One time on hold for an hour and a half. Written emails, calls after calls. No answers to the point the police had to write us a summons for having no insurance information. I wish I could take part of the blame, but it was at the total fault of Avis. I will never use Avis again. It's unfortunate their neglect ended in this situation. I had to file a complaint with the BBB in Tulsa, OK cause that's where they're headquartered to hopefully get a response. People were stranded this Saturday when they tried to get cars they already paid for. When I got the basic car, which was fine, I was never offered compensation or refunded for the upgrades I had paid for. When I needed help, I just got a 800 number with no help for something very simple causing me to get an unnecessary ticket. Can't say I would ever use Avis again. Avoid at all possible cost. I was scammed - Avis gave me a car that had expired plates for 6 months, I got a ticket from the police because of that I had to call ERS, call customer serivce, call Avis locations, I was told by Avis to drive illegally to the airport to pick up a new car... I was told my ticket would be paid and I would be refunded the price of the rental for the first day, I was confirmed for my total cost to come out to about $95, then I was charged $577!!! I'm not sure how a car company can be a scam. But this place is. I've been charged hundreds of dollars consistently for my $150 rental that I didn't even have one day. We are close to $1000 that they have charged in ridiculous and false charges at this point. The fact that they still keep charging my card is shocking. We have called 3 times and are told each time of new charges that are coming in that aren't legit and have been told they are removing those. Yet none of that has come in, with no update. When we have called back we are told they are having computer issues EVERY time in order to process refunds. I have rented SO many cars over the years and have never had such an awful experience a company. Stay away! Check your cards after. All the return agents are good. They did have an individual name Jeremy there. He was the worst. I went there looking for the guy with a X name and he wasn't there. His customer service was above and beyond and he knew what he was doing. Why would you get rid of your best employee? They have a African American manager, that's fat, West Indian he's a joke, needs to be transferred. There is another manager light skin, with a k or c name he's ok . I have never left a negative review on the internet before but this place pushed me over the edge. This place is borderline fraudulent. We made a $150 reservation but that has gone up to over $1000 through miscellaneous charges THAT THEY CANNOT EXPLAIN WHEN ASKED. We have called 3 times and are told each time of new charges that are coming in that we did not know about or agree to. We have been told that they are removing those charges each time we called (though the charges they agree to remove have changed each call). Yet none of the promised refunds have come in, with no update (we started this process two weeks ago). When we have called back, we are told they never promised those refunds, and even though they have recorded our conversations, they do not have access to those recordings to verify. When we have started the process again to receive the refunds, they have "issues with their system", so the call takes an hour, and because of those "issues," they cannot issue the refund at that time but will in 24-48hours. This of course doesn't happen, and then the process is repeated. Again, we have called three times. If you want real numbers here are some charges that have added to our $150 reservation -$450 cleaning fee for "animal hair" -$94 for gas (we declined their gas and returned with a full tank) -$200 for renting for an extra day and the insurance for that day (we returned the car 1.5 hours late during working hours) -$250 for "miscellaneous and other" (No joke, and the agents we have talked to on the phone literally told us that THEY CANNOT REFUND THAT FEE BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS FOR) This entire process has felt illegal. If I could give them zero stars I would. NEVER rent from them. This is a horrific and predatory company. read more

A Little Advice For You: If you're picking up a car at the same time as everyone else (Friday afternoon, Saturday morning), get there early. A line will form, and it will not move swiftly. If you're expecting a streamlined and modern experience, you should've rolled with Zipcar or Car2Go. Here, they still print your reservation details out on paper that has the perforated strips with little holes all along the side that you tear off (gleefully). If you're using a corporate discount code, they will probably want to see your corporate ID. If it's your friend's corporate discount code,* you better be nice to the employee you're talking to, otherwise you're going to pay the full freight. If you're expecting consistency of any kind, you've come to the wrong place. I've had friendly, efficient employees handle my business, and apathetic, don't-give-a-fuck employees ruin everyone's day. It's a crapshoot. All that said, this place is sometimes well-run, and has never screwed me by not having a car for me after I've made a reservation. I'm "Avis loyal", for the most part, but that has started to wither a bit over the last few years. I've been to this location several times, but only 2 times since their office moved to "State street". I must agree with the other reviews that they seem inefficient at getting people checked in and out the door quickly. Also, the cars are located in the 4 level dungeon that is dark and hard to perform my "walk around" of the vehicle, before I sign my life away that there are no dings or dents. Returning is a bummer for the same reason, and one time the staff was friend but 3 out of the 4 transactions I didn't get a warm and fuzzy feeling or even a receipt. It's just not what I'm used to. Maybe I need to go with the app, because I did receive some texts regarding my return, so that was good. Also, the cars I get, are usually, giant 4 door big-un's. I don't mind a smaller car, that's easier to park and handle and better on gas. In general some improvement could be made. read more

They gave me a total lemon - check engine light was on, write marker was written all over the windows, car wasn't clean (and it's COVID) - and the car broke down on the side of the road 15 minutes away. After multiple complaints and a wasted day that I had taken off from work, Corporate had the nerve to refund me only $60 on my rental!!! Disappointed in the wait time, slowness, lack of staff versus customers, and inconsistent customer service (very few staff tried to help in unfair situations) at this location. One time we had to wait over 30 min on the line and also to pick up our car thereafter. Furthermore, when we were upsold an EZPass and didn't get it, we called and were on hold to inform the staff; no one gave us clarity that they wouldn't charge us. However when we returned it, someone helped us, but it was slightly stressful not knowing what would happen. There was one time someone gave us a slight discount for how dirty the car was. My rental car broke down unexpectedly when I was supposed to return it. I was in a full panic as I had to get to work and could not start the car. I ran to this avis where i rented the car from and the manager drove me back to my car, jumped the car which immediately started running and even told me to not worry about filling up the tank, which would have been really annoying to do in Brooklyn. I rent from them at least once a week and they are super friendly and helpful! I would only say that maybe they should have the avis preferred members cars and paperwork ready when we arrive, like they do in other locations. But randomly chatting with customers for 0.5 hour and having other customers waiting outside is stupid. Presidents Club Avis member - meaning, a very frequent Avis renter for work - and I've had multiple bad experiences here. Wait times are very much the luck of the draw and you could be stuck behind many people all doing "manual" kinds of reservations instead of my typical transaction which is fully sorted prior to arrival and all I need are the keys. Having to wait behind these slow customers and the slow staff is awful. But actually what's much worse about this location is their psycho belligerence and this baffling attitude about their policies and rules. They will scream at you for being late for your reservation even though it is perfectly common practice for people to show up an hour or two off. They will ask you for work ID - of course that's fine per their policy - but if you forget your ID they will also vindictively look up your profile and add notes like "he doesn't work there." Um, yes I do. I've been renting cars for my job that I've had for years. I had to go back to my profile and put back in a bunch of stuff they obnoxiously deleted. Another time I returned a car early and the system ended up charging me like 3x more than my original reservation instead of less. Not a huge deal and most locations quickly say "oh that doesn't look right let me fix that for you" but not here. They went on some tirade about how I had "breached my contract" by returning the car early and telling me that I deserved to pay $300 more than originally planned even for keeping the car LESS time. Of course, when I called the Avis 800 number, they fixed it immediately and confirmed I was right and they apologized. These people are next level nuts. I would suggest to avoid this place for pickups - dropoffs are safer - it's hard because this is the location with the longest business hours in BK - but if you can pick up elsewhere, do it. Also be VERY careful about covering yourself in terms of returns - you should document when you take the car out - take photos of the parking garage timestamp when you exit and take a photo of the parking ticket when you bring the car back. Document the gas and mileage for yourself - keep those things on your phone for weeks or months - photograph ALL existing scratches no matter how small or petty, before you leave the garage. These people are LOOKING for ways to upcharge and penalize you for extra time, or not enough gas, or for damages, after a rental and you could be forced to litigate the extra charges after the fact with Avis customer service. You'll be fine with customer service eventually, as long as you have photos, receipts, etc, but it would be much nicer if these hateful people just didn't work here and if this operation was operated like a customer-facing friendly business that it ought to be. read more

NO DISCOUNT IS WORTH THIS! Extremely rude and downright combative staff. During my pickup, they turned several customers away for showing up "early" for their reservation. In my case I was in at 11:41 for a 12:00 booking, and they made me sit and wait, despite the office being empty at the time. By the time I actually got them to see me, there was a line out the door, all of whom had to wait while myself and another stranded early arriver were processed. We each ended up getting out about 20 minutes after our reservation time, so almost exactly the amount of time we spent waiting and watching the line grow longer. In addition to their self-imposed bottlenecks, the staff is just plain rude and unhelpful. They're constantly making mistakes - I was given no option for ANY insurance, and was wrongly charged $170 for gas, for example - but not even so much as a "sorry about that." Instead, I saw staff become loud and defensive both with me and with other patrons several times during my visit, whenever they were asked questions about billing or contract details. read more

We waited in line then he took all the people that were waiting to return a car in front of us after he took our credit card. That's not usually how a line works! Also, the guy down stairs incorrectly marked gas tanks as not full when customers were complaining that they were. This caused the line to be longer because the guy at the desk had to call downstairs to ask how much the tank has. Show up early because this place takes FOREVER. read more

Then, you show up at your scheduled time to a massive line and NO cars available at all, no estimate as to when they'll have cars, and no manager to speak to.
