I rented a car here in August 2026. No problems. A few weeks later I made another reservation. The associated trip was postponed. When I attempted to cancel my reservation, I was hit with a $50 junk fee because my reservation was prepaid and non-refundable. (A non-refundable reservation? Really? For a rental car?!!) This was a gold standard visit for me. I'm an Avis Preferred member. We got on the airport shuttle to the Avis. Less than five minutes later I was leaving the parking lot with a vehicle. Shuttle dropped me off at the Preferred counter. I gave the attendant my rewards number and she upgraded me to a 2026 Subaru Outback with five miles on it. The car still smelled new. They could have taken some writing off the window but I'll deal with it. I returned the car at a different location and that was an equal breeze. I clearly stated that I was calling on behalf of my coworker, yet they kept asking if I was the account holder. I explained that my coworker had just arrived from Korea and couldn't speak or understand English, which is why I was assisting. I even provided my name and my company name--the exact same details used when picking up the car at the airport, so my identity was fully verifiable. I'm an Avis Preferred member. I will never rent a car from Avis again. I arrived in Denver and picked up a Kia Hybrid Sportage. I went to pick up my 81 year old mother and we headed out for Vail. The engine FAILED 15 miles down the road. I lost power but was able to safely exit the highway and pull over to the side of the road. It was a very hot afternoon in Denver - over 90 degrees. I called Avis and Roadside Assistance said 1-2 hours for pick up. That was not going to work for us! We left the keys in the car and took a Lyft back to Avis where I was assured another vehicle would be waiting for us. We were told by the manager we had to wait for the dead vehicle to be picked up before they would issue us a new car. We were delayed by 3 hours! We waited in the Preferred Waiting Area. There is no restroom there. We were not even offered a bottle of water. Terrible Customer Service. The manager said she would make an "adjustment" on my rental fee for the week. Do not use Avis out of Denver. They are woefully slow when there is a line and over charge for the rental. It was a busy weekend so rental rates were already high when we reserved and when we got to the front of the line, they no longer had a car in our rental class (full size 7 pass Yukon denali or similar). After a lot of back and forth they gave us one from the rental class (standard suv 5 pass - chevy blazer) but then charged us $94.38 MORE than our reserved rate for a lower class vehicle. Called customer service today and had to talk to 2 different people just to get the upcharge refunded and there was no help in paying the lower rate for the class of car we actually received. But I still had to deal with the tolls which they hand off to another company. I just got a parking fine associated with the same rental, handed off to yet another third party. Every Avis rental I have had they check my driving license. So apparently they don't bother at Denver, allowing people to take their cars on someone else rental agreement. I've tried to be patient with the Denver Avis but their cars always dirty with hair/stains throughout each ear. The preferred people are always disgruntled and get annoyed that they have to talk to you, the people at the main building are even worse because they want to just give the worst on the lot and will get testy with you instead of trying to help. I've been to a lot of rental places, but they don't try to really help you reach out and make you feel like a customer. They just want you out the door and away from them, I basically feel like I'd rather see you leave angry, and with a car. Sad to say that it is time to stop using Avis, the company that used to say it "tried harder" because it was No. 2 (behind Hertz, back a gazillion years ago). Now they don't try at all. Made a reservation in Cape Town, South Africa, for the end of October. Rented at the Airport and had no problems. No complaints whatsoever until, apparently, my return of the car, which I guess I mistakenly thought had gone as good as it could go. A nice attendant checked the car in, made nice small talk and gave me a receipt showing all good / all as reserved / all paid. So I'm thinking, "Gee that was easy. I guess Avis is back in the saddle." Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Just got a notice that literally weeks after I returned the car Avis has charged me--without notice or my authorization--a new billing for $26.42 for the rental. Tried to contact them and found it impossible to do without making a call to Cape Town, South Africa. What!?! I rented a vehicle from this location for two days, picking up and returning at the location and time agreed to in my reservation. Days later my card was charged for the final amount which had an additional $3,300 added. In the receipt that I was sent, Avis claimed that I had dropped the car off three days late and in Arkansas. I contacted customer service to file a dispute, and provided proof that I dropped the car off in Denver at the correct time to their "Delayed Check In Team" for investigation. After several weeks of no communication, they finally got back to me and took $1,700 off the bill, which still left it $1,600 above the correct amount. When I questioned this, I was told the charges were valid. They offered no explanation for why they thought I dropped the car off 3 days late and across the country, and no explanation for why the evidence I provided was not sufficient. Eventually, it took a 1 hour call with several customer service agents to finally get my bill down to the correct amount. Frankly I'm disgusted that they're charging me any amount for the rental after incorrectly charging thousands to my credit card, requiring me to prove that I dropped the car off at their location, "investigating" for nearly a month, and still taking no action until I sat on the phone for an hour. read more

After baggage claim, you head straight to island 4 where all rental companies buses wait to take passengers to the rental hubs. Have experienced this for the first time. The Avis bus was readily available when we walked out of the terminal, driver was really nice, helped us with luggage during pick up and drop off. At the site, there are 2 lines, one for Avis preferred members and other for non-members. Despite being a member and having a reservation already, I had to wait in line for about 50 minutes. There were two associates at the reception. When my turn came finally, it was a smooth process. Got the key within 5 minutes for a similar car I reserved for. The Ford Expedition I got had super nice interior. The car needed oil change but rest of it was mechanically just fine. It served us fine throughout the 4 day strip, going up down the steep Interstate highways of Colorado at 75-85 mph. On the day of return, I pulled over at the return section, they scanned the barcode and I was good to go. I hope on a bus standing right next to the car and went to the terminal. Other than the long waiting line at the beginning, I had a great rental experience from this Avis. I hope I can just reserve my next car from the app instead of waiting in line. read more

2.5 stars Mixed reviews about pick up process and return process: I booked it through Costco and it says that I could get a Mazda cx50 or similar, but I got Kia selto base model. I just took it since I waited 90 minutes in line. The counter was severely understaffed. After we went to get the car, all the drivers just left the car doors open with no walkthroughs so customers were scrambling to learn to set up their rental cars on their own. Chaotic experience. We rented a car from Denver for vacation and the teller at the desk promised us the extra 400$ charge was a hold until we return it. My experience revealed serious operational and systemic issues that made an already challenging situation unnecessarily difficult, frustrating, and inefficient. 1. Reserved Vehicle Class Not Honored at Pickup I reserved a Toyota Crown (or similar sedan) following guidance from Avis at the time of reservation. Upon arrival at Denver International Airport, the vehicle I was initially offered was a Jeep Wagoneer, which is completely different from the class I requested. When I declined, citing that it was not what I reserved, I was told the only alternative was a Cadillac XT4 - which was also not in the class which I reserved - supposedly located at B16. When I went to B16, no vehicle was present. Throughout this process, I had to repeatedly request a manager at the Denver location to resolve the issue, which added significant stress and delay. This failure to honor a confirmed reservation at pickup is a fundamental service problem. 2. Mechanical Issue Requiring Vehicle Exchange After receiving the Cadillac XT4 replacement vehicle, I discovered an issue with the tires such that it required an exchange. The tires had worn beyond the tread wear indicator such that the vehicle should never have been deemed roadworthy. While the issue could have been handled efficiently, Avis's processes made it unnecessarily difficult to resolve. 3. Systemic Communication Failures Customers cannot reach local branches directly by phone. Even when dialing the Denver International Airport number (or other location-specific numbers), the automated greeting claims, "You have reached Avis at [location]," but the call is immediately routed into the general Avis phone tree. There is no option to speak directly with the on-site staff who actually have the vehicles. The phone tree is insufficient. There is no option to exchange a vehicle. The closest option, "Change," only addresses extending a rental, which does not meet customer needs in situations like mechanical issues or safety concerns. There is no call-back option for disconnected calls, for waiting in queue or if one needs an agent to call them back, forcing customers to remain on hold unnecessarily. 4. Misdirection to Cheyenne, Wyoming During my rental, an Avis representative confirmed that replacement vehicles were available at the Cheyenne, Wyoming location. I first observed that the Google Maps listing did not line up with the actual location of the branch and then noticed the Avis counter was unattended. Eventually, the local employee, Lenny, returned and assisted me, providing excellent service. However, the lack of real-time information forced me to drive a considerable distance under uncertainty, demonstrating systemic inefficiencies. 5. Lack of Transparency in Vehicle Availability Avis's app does not show real-time vehicle availability at each location. Customers cannot see which cars are on the lot, their mileage, or class. As a result, customers are forced to physically visit multiple locations to determine availability. For example, if the closest two Avis offices are an hour apart in opposite directions, a customer will need to spend as much as three hours driving just to determine what vehicles are available and then may have to double back an additional two hours to go back to the initial location to pick up a car. If the branches answered their phones, much time could be saved. Even after identifying a vehicle, there is no guarantee it can be held while the customer arrives. 6. Overall System Design Issues These problems are not isolated to a single branch; they are systemic issues. Avis's processes prioritize centralized control over customer convenience, creating repeated inefficiencies and frustration for customers trying to resolve legitimate issues. 7. Suggested Improvement: Real-Time Vehicle Availability in the App I strongly suggest that Avis implement a system in the app where all available vehicles at each location are displayed in real time. Each listing should include: A photograph of the vehicle The vehicle class The current mileage With this functionality, a customer could: View vehicles available at a given location before traveling Make an exchange directly through the app Reserve a specific vehicle for pickup, or hold a car at a location where they have already made a reservation This simple, transparent solution would eliminate unnecessary trips, save customers significant time, and allow Avis to deliver a far more convenient and customer-centric experience. read more

Avis charged for a broken windshield. The car was inspected by an Avis employee when it was returned and cleared with no damage. The windshield was not broken when it was returned. Two weeks later a large charge was added to our credit card. Avis refused to remove the charge without a picture of the car. I didn't take a picture because the employee cleared the car. I made a reservation in late March for a vehicle during my stay in the Denver area for my daughter's June 20th wedding. The original reservation was for the satellite location 15055 E Mississippi Ave in Aurora. This location is owned by Mr. Joe Sawaged. Approximately 24hrs before my reservation Mr. Sawaged phoned me to inform me he had no vehicles and there weren't any vehicles at DIA airport. He was unable to offer any explanation or assistance other than explain I could wait at his facility for a vehicle that was due to be returned approximately 2.5hrs after my reservation was booked for. I phoned Avis customer support which is located in S Africa. They could not advise where the nearest facility was that I can start my efforts to locate a vehicle. I managed to find a satellite location on S Chambers Rd @ Quincy. I spoke to a woman at that location and she booked me a reservation. Upon arriving at that location I was told there weren't any vehicles and the agent didn't understand how someone booked me a vehicle given non were available. I also learned that Mr. Joe Sawaged owned this location too. Gee, there's a common denominator here and I was being lead down paths of false hope. Joe is nothing more than a scumbag who has no business operating a franchise for a company that has serviced my rental needs for nearly 30yrs. I would highly recommend avoiding these 2 Avis facilities for anyone traveling in and around Aurora Colorado. read more
