Sad to say that it is time to stop using Avis, the company that used to say it "tried harder" because it was No. 2 (behind Hertz, back a gazillion years ago). Now they don't try at all. Made a reservation in Cape Town, South Africa, for the end of October. Rented at the Airport and had no problems. No complaints whatsoever until, apparently, my return of the car, which I guess I mistakenly thought had gone as good as it could go. A nice attendant checked the car in, made nice small talk and gave me a receipt showing all good / all as reserved / all paid. So I'm thinking, "Gee that was easy. I guess Avis is back in the saddle." Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Just got a notice that literally weeks after I returned the car Avis has charged me--without notice or my authorization--a new billing for $26.42 for the rental. Tried to contact them and found it impossible to do without making a call to Cape Town, South Africa. What!?! You're an international company that I hired here in the US and you now want me to communicate with a company who's clock is 10 hours ahead of mine so I get to call them from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. about a problem they created and about a charge they made up from nothing. We we're dropped off at 9pm, one person working and the line was around the building, around 10, there were 3 employees, we didn't get inside until around 11pm, by then there were 5 employees, thought it would go faster....NO! At midnight there were 4 employees, one sat at the end counter doing nothing one guy at the other end too 20 minutes per customer. The only highlight was the one gentleman that was getting customers in and out in about 5 minutes each. We Will NEVER reserve from BUDGET OR AVIS again, in any state we travel to.. this is the most disappointing experience ever! 1. when I arrived at midnight, 3 others were preferred members so they hopped off the bus to their assigned spot (N3, P12, etc). while I was inside. all three came to the rental counter. there was no car in the space. in fact, there were no cars in row N at all. they were given different slot and 2/3 came back a second time, because there still wasn't a car available. I guess because I prepaid I was able to leave after an hour of waiting in a Kia SUV. 2. 90 degrees in Denver and the AC was broken in the KIa. 2 days of driving around without AC. I did that quick check out from the text I received with a QR code. The car they provided for me was within the class I ordered. The car was clean and new and wonderful. Still disputing charges for a rental I never took three months later. Avis allowed someone to take a rental I had cancelled out of the lot on my cancelled rental agreement. This individual racked up toll and parking fines which Avis tried to assign to me. Avis cancelled my charges on the rental, admitting they were at fault. But I still had to deal with the tolls which they hand off to another company. I just got a parking fine associated with the same rental, handed off to yet another third party. Every Avis rental I have had they check my driving license. So apparently they don't bother at Denver, allowing people to take their cars on someone else rental agreement. Despite multiple requests, Avis are unable to explain to me why I am getting these charges. read more

After we went to get the car, all the drivers just left the car doors open with no walkthroughs so customers were scrambling to learn to set up their rental cars on their own. Chaotic experience. After baggage claim, you head straight to island 4 where all rental companies buses wait to take passengers to the rental hubs. Have experienced this for the first time. The Avis bus was readily available when we walked out of the terminal, driver was really nice, helped us with luggage during pick up and drop off. At the site, there are 2 lines, one for Avis preferred members and other for non-members. Despite being a member and having a reservation already, I had to wait in line for about 50 minutes. There were two associates at the reception. When my turn came finally, it was a smooth process. Got the key within 5 minutes for a similar car I reserved for. The Ford Expedition I got had super nice interior. The car needed oil change but rest of it was mechanically just fine. It served us fine throughout the 4 day strip, going up down the steep Interstate highways of Colorado at 75-85 mph. On the day of return, I pulled over at the return section, they scanned the barcode and I was good to go. I hope on a bus standing right next to the car and went to the terminal. Avoid! It takes 10 min to drive to the Avi's lot from the terminal. Then you arrive and are told they are out of the car type you reserved, and are out of all other car options. Then you have to take the bus 10 min back to the terminal (after waiting 10 min for the bus to load at the Avis lot.) Then of course catch a different bus to a better car rental company for another 10 min. read more

The worst car rental experience I've ever had. The line at Avis Denver International Airport was over 90 minutes long just to reach the counter -- my flight was shorter than the wait to get a car! There were only four employees trying to handle a crowd of nearly a hundred customers. No communication, no apologies, and no sign of urgency to improve the situation. The following is an account of my recent rental experience with Avis as well as some suggestions for improving the customer experience. My experience revealed serious operational and systemic issues that made an already challenging situation unnecessarily difficult, frustrating, and inefficient. 1. Reserved Vehicle Class Not Honored at Pickup I reserved a Toyota Crown (or similar sedan) following guidance from Avis at the time of reservation. Upon arrival at Denver International Airport, the vehicle I was initially offered was a Jeep Wagoneer, which is completely different from the class I requested. When I declined, citing that it was not what I reserved, I was told the only alternative was a Cadillac XT4 - which was also not in the class which I reserved - supposedly located at B16. When I went to B16, no vehicle was present. Throughout this process, I had to repeatedly request a manager at the Denver location to resolve the issue, which added significant stress and delay. This failure to honor a confirmed reservation at pickup is a fundamental service problem. 2. Mechanical Issue Requiring Vehicle Exchange After receiving the Cadillac XT4 replacement vehicle, I discovered an issue with the tires such that it required an exchange. The tires had worn beyond the tread wear indicator such that the vehicle should never have been deemed roadworthy. While the issue could have been handled efficiently, Avis's processes made it unnecessarily difficult to resolve. 3. Systemic Communication Failures Customers cannot reach local branches directly by phone. Even when dialing the Denver International Airport number (or other location-specific numbers), the automated greeting claims, "You have reached Avis at [location]," but the call is immediately routed into the general Avis phone tree. There is no option to speak directly with the on-site staff who actually have the vehicles. The phone tree is insufficient. There is no option to exchange a vehicle. The closest option, "Change," only addresses extending a rental, which does not meet customer needs in situations like mechanical issues or safety concerns. There is no call-back option for disconnected calls, for waiting in queue or if one needs an agent to call them back, forcing customers to remain on hold unnecessarily. 4. Misdirection to Cheyenne, Wyoming During my rental, an Avis representative confirmed that replacement vehicles were available at the Cheyenne, Wyoming location. I first observed that the Google Maps listing did not line up with the actual location of the branch and then noticed the Avis counter was unattended. Eventually, the local employee, Lenny, returned and assisted me, providing excellent service. However, the lack of real-time information forced me to drive a considerable distance under uncertainty, demonstrating systemic inefficiencies. 5. Lack of Transparency in Vehicle Availability Avis's app does not show real-time vehicle availability at each location. Customers cannot see which cars are on the lot, their mileage, or class. As a result, customers are forced to physically visit multiple locations to determine availability. For example, if the closest two Avis offices are an hour apart in opposite directions, a customer will need to spend as much as three hours driving just to determine what vehicles are available and then may have to double back an additional two hours to go back to the initial location to pick up a car. If the branches answered their phones, much time could be saved. Even after identifying a vehicle, there is no guarantee it can be held while the customer arrives. 6. Overall System Design Issues These problems are not isolated to a single branch; they are systemic issues. Avis's processes prioritize centralized control over customer convenience, creating repeated inefficiencies and frustration for customers trying to resolve legitimate issues. 7. Suggested Improvement: Real-Time Vehicle Availability in the App I strongly suggest that Avis implement a system in the app where all available vehicles at each location are displayed in real time. Each listing should include: A photograph of the vehicle The vehicle class The current mileage With this functionality, a customer could: View vehicles available at a given location before traveling Make an exchange directly through the app Reserve a specific vehicle for pickup, or hold a car at a location where they have already made a reservation This simple, transparent solution would eliminate unnecessary trips, save customers significant time, and allow Avis to deliver a far more convenient and customer-centric experience. read more

Absolutely horrible experience from start to finish. The customer service is beyond terrible, with zero communication at every step. When we picked up the car, nobody walked us to it, nobody did an inspection with us, and the vehicle was already covered in damage. Before we were even given the car, an employee told us the vehicle should not have been rented out at all and should have been taken to Texas for the season--yet they had us drive it anyway. On top of that, the windshield wipers were completely worn out and unsafe, which should never happen with a rental car. During a rainstorm, the wipers were so bad that we could barely see the road, putting us in a dangerous situation on the highway. To make things worse, staff attempted to drive the car off without properly addressing the existing damage. Later, when someone hit us and we were involved in an accident, the supervisor we spoke with refused to give us his name, which is extremely unprofessional and concerning. Despite the accident, we were told to continue driving the car. Now, after the fact, they are claiming the vehicle is totaled and are sending me a bill saying I'm responsible for it. I have been calling repeatedly to speak with a representative about this bill, and no one answers, no one returns calls, and there is absolutely no follow-up. This company lacks accountability, transparency, and basic customer service. I would never rent from them again and strongly advise others to stay far away unless you want to deal with damaged vehicles, unsafe conditions, unresponsive staff, and surprise bills with no explanation. read more

Do not book from Avis or if you do make sure to take pictures of everything wrong with the vehicle or reject it. They have me a dirty ford bronco sport with camping equipment from the previous guest. We did not think much of it and left it there. As we returned the vehicle at the massive site. We were treated like cattle no one to express concerns and we had to leave. 4 days later I receive a letter from them for a $450 service or cleaning fee which is absurd. I am beyond disappointed with the service--or complete lack thereof--we experienced at the Denver Airport location last night. After waiting in a blizzard for an hour just to catch an airport shuttle, the experience only went downhill from there. ​As Preferred members, we went directly to the Preferred Center, only to be told by an employee that they were closing (despite him being there for an extra 40 minutes). Instead of assisting us, he forced us to walk back out into the blizzard to the main terminal. ​Upon arriving at the main location, we were met with: ​A 2.5-hour wait: The line was massive and moved at a snail's pace. ​Zero Inventory: Despite having a confirmed reservation, they didn't even have the car size we rented available. ​Zero Management: There was absolutely no communication from leadership. Hundreds of people were left in the dark while the staff struggled. ​The lack of customer service and basic logistical planning during a weather event was appalling. I hope I'm not jinxing myself, but my Avis experience in Denver was just as great as my other recent rentals with them. Denver's airport is a behemoth & I think it took us about an hour to get to the Avis lot after landing & getting our checked bags. Of course this is not in Avis' control but something to be considered. As with my other rentals from Avis recently (& one big reason I keep using them), the app advised where my assigned car was located so we could just load up & go. I love not having to wait or talk to anyone. But, they assigned me an electric car even though I'd reserved a gas-guzzling sedan. To be honest, I just didn't want to struggle with finding charging stations in an unfamiliar city, and neither of us had ever driven an EV so we weren't sure of (& didn't want) any learning curve. So I braced myself for a long wait at the Preferred counter like I'd seen at LAS, LAX & TPA. Maybe because it was 8am, but we had zero wait & found TWO agents ready to assist. After just a few minutes, one gentleman directed us to another parking spot for a traditional gasoline-powered Kia. Interestingly, this car had some noticeable body damage, though mechanically it seemed fine. Of course I took photos & we mentioned the physical damage as we exited; the gate attendant confirmed the existing damage had already been documented. The car was great and the gas mileage was really good... we drove around a lot over 4 days & only needed to fill up the tank before returning. I want to point out the nearby Rocket gas station as being quite perfect for topping off the gas tank & getting last-minute snacks &/or cleaning-up before returning the vehicle. We stopped there right after picking up this car & again right before dropping it off. No clue if the gas pricing is reasonable because I WAS ON VACATION (and in another state so IDK what is normal). There are some food/snack options aside from the convenience store but we didn't try any of them. However I really appreciated the gas station within a couple of miles of the rental car lot. Yes, I have forgotten in Tampa and the nearest gas stations are not that close. To sum up, Avis has been earning my business over the last few years with their good service and excellent rates through AARP. At least for my specific needs post-pandemic, Avis has had the most reasonable rental pricing with my AARP discount, even after looking at Costco & AAA. My critiques are super minor (like I reserved a sedan & got a minivan but it was actually fantastic in spite of the higher MPG), so I continue to check Avis first and end up reserving with them after price-checking everyone else. read more

Update: Just received a $10.55 charge for a toll, even though my wife and I drove an extra 30 minutes to the Denver airport to avoid tolls. I don't know how this happened. I will call Avis, but I'm not hopeful that they will do anything about it. This is the worst rental experience I've ever had. I will most certainly never use Avis again. Over 1400 reviews with 1.5 star aggregate sure tells you something about this location. Avis does not respond to Yelp reviews but they do respond to Google. That said, I will add my own 1 star review. I booked my rental about two weeks before we were to arrive in Denver from Boise. Upon arrival, we got through the airport and the shuttle was waiting, so we just hopped on. So far, so good. Unfortunately, that was the end of the positive. At the rental counter, we were informed that the only cars in our class were electric. We had not driven an electric car before and did not want to start in a strange city. The woman offered a Nissan Rogue at a $10 a day upgrade. We took it, even though as a preferred customer we were not to be charged an upgrade (to their credit, they did not seem to have added that $40 fee to our final bill). We go to the car and upon entering, we were greeted by the strong smell of cigarette smoke. Since my wife has asthma, this was not good. However, we were not going to go back and get an EV, so we moved on. As we drove, we kept getting a malfunction message, but never quite knew what it was about. Also, the cruise control did not work, and we were unable to connect to Apple CarPlay. At our destination, Ft. Collins, we checked in the next day to see if they could swap out the car but we're told that no cars were available. Upon getting back to the Denver airport Avis drop off, we informed the Avis field agent of our dissatisfaction but did not have time to go to the rental counter to resolve. I emailed Avis about our experience. Without calling or consulting me, an agent named Monte issued a coupon for two free days for a future rental. I responded that I had hoped that our present rental could be discounted for our poor experience. I was informed by an agent named Haley that, since the coupon had already been issued and could not be voided, I was out of luck. I will not be using that coupon as I will not be using Avis in the future. We have rented probably 5 cars in the last year, so it would have been smart for Avis to compensate us to our satisfaction. Their loss. There are plenty of other rental companies that have and will provide better service to us in the future. read more

I've rented here twice now and I absolutely love it. The bus picks you up at the airport and takes you off-site to the rental cars. When you arrive, you walk up to the counter with your ID and credit card and they can find your reservation that way. The guy wrote down on a slip where to go, and unfortunely the car wasn't in the spot so I went back in and he quickly fixed it. I was given a GMC Terrain and I loved it! It was such a nice car! The car was clean, had apple play, full of gas and we were on our way. The return process was quick. I left the keys in the car and the lady came by and scanned the car and I received a receipt by the time the bus was taking us back to the airport. Will definitely be back! read more

I returned the car 2 days early, knowing that I would not be refunded for the 2 unused days. However, Avis tacked on additional charges!!!! That's it. Multiple shuttles of ALL other car rental companies were doing rounds, but no signs of Avis shuttle. Finally it arrived after 30 minutes of wait. Same story on the way back. The shuttle was as packed as a NYC subway! I hardly knew the worst was yet to come though! I submitted the feedback to Avis Denver airport about the shuttle delays. A guy named Cody Willson responded saying they will act upon it.. And do you know how they responded? - A week after my rental was complete, they sent me an email saying they are charging $125 for 'excessive cleanup'. I was like WTF. When we got the vehicle, it had previous customer's chips wrappers, gums etc. And now, you are charging for cleaning the car? Two-day mystery car rental. Clean van ready when I arrived, no issues. Quick dropoff and the bus driver waited for me on Monday 10/27/2025. The driver of the party bus, singing dance tunes back to the airport, had everyone smiling and laughing on the way back to the airport. A nice break from a usually laborious process, will book again with Avis DEN hoping to get the same bus driver. He was one of three people I interacted with during the whole rental and he did a fantastic job with every customer onboard. Well done! read more

My company booked a car and prepaid for me to use it while visiting California. When I arrived I was told that they could not release the car to me even though it was in my name. They also said they could not issue the refund to my company. Well my company said to just book a card and they would refund me the money after the trip. The next morning at 5:30am I dropped the car off in line with an employee and they said just leave it there with the key on the dash. I then was charged for 2 days with them reporting that I didn't return the car until 1pm. I was told there was nothing that could be done. I then said that I had pictures with timestamps which quickly changed their tune. I eventually spoke to a manager on the phone who was able to refund my company and the extra day. This was extremely frustrating and I feel like they only did that because I threatened to call my bank and report it as fraudulent which would cancel the entire payment. Ugh. Ordeal. 1) The car lot is confusing. Took a bunch of driving around to find the exit. There was no scan code for exiting either even though the text said there would be. 2) Went to first place... they told me to go to the second other office... 3) They said my driver's license was no good (even though it's perfectly fine). Called the manager. The manager said the driver's license was no good (even though it's perfectly fine.) Finally they had the bright idea to scan it or whatever with a different device. Guess what, my driver's license is perfectly fine. 4) The car that online had said was available and reserved for me was NOT available. 5) Was given a SUV that another person was also given! Confused couple showed up saying they were also assigned that same car while I was in it getting ready to leave. 5) Gave the SUV to the couple; went back to desk where they said they didn't have anymore cars available -- only very large vehicles. 6) Upon asking again, they went and found a vehicle that fit what I reserved. 7) However, that vehicle smells like someone dumped their Thai food all over the floor, and has a dirty (bird poo) windshield, which the exiting attendant would not wipe off.
