I tried Avila Bistro for the first time a few months back and wasn't disappointed! We got there on a Sunday morning and yes, it was packed! But the servers at the restaurant were so nice, and we found a table inside and another outside. Since we were 4 people, we needed 2 tables, so they helped us move the table from inside to the outside, and we were able to sit outside. Between, if you plan to sit inside, it's really cold. So we started with some delicious tequenos! They tasted so fresh and the dough was good! For the main, I ordered the Arepa Super Pelua which has shredded beef, Gouda cheese, avocado, and a fried egg on top. Now, that was big! It might easily be shared between 2 people plus a couple of appetizers. My friends ordered the Sifrina, Llanera, and some cheese empanadas. Everything was delicious and fast! For drinks, my friends ordered the Chicha, which was ok because it was way too sweet for me. I had the passion fruit juice and it was really good too. read more

Today, I went with my wife for the first time. My first impression of the place was clean and welcoming. As a starter we ordered mini empanadas mix. They were made to ordered and were delicious. The empanadas doug fresh and crisp. Afterwards, I ordered the arepa La Pelua and my wife La Catira. Both empanadas were loaded with meat and cheese. Both were savory. The arepas were crisp, moist and fresh. The stuffings had the latin flavors I've known all my life. The server and staff were all attentive and with good attitude. Tried Avila Bistro and ordered the Americana Arepa with butter. It was so good and a huge portion. The arepa had those perfect cheese pull moments and was packed with flavor. They serve three house sauces that all pair nicely, but the pink sauce was my favorite. It complimented the arepa perfectly. Service was friendly and the food came out pretty fast. The only small downsides were that there wasn't any check-in during the meal, and I would've liked for the table to be wiped down before seating as there were a few crumbs and the menus to be a bit cleaner when handed over. Terrible service. I sat at the table waiting for a waitress for 10 minutes. When one finally came, she didn't even give me a menu; she just wanted to take my order. Meanwhile, the other waitress was badmouthing the other customers. The restaurant has really gone downhill. I won't be back, and I obviously don't recommend it. We've been buying the Pan de Jamón from Avila for a few years and it's become a staple for our Venezuelan Christmas. The olives provide the salt/acidity whereas the raisins add a touch of sweetness. This year, the bacon was pretty fatty and felt a bit undercooked which is why I gave this a four rather than a five. I'd like to note that previous years, it's been perfect. read more

Avila Bistro is a nice local option for north Miami. Came here twice, once for an arepa and a cachapa, and another time for a pabellon and a pepito. The arepa was pretty good. The cachapa was more looks than favor and the dough was just not very good. The pabellon was OK but the rice was very hard and we had to ask for a different batch. The pepito was ok. Juices are good and desserts alright. Service is decent. As a Venezuelan visiting Miami I was excited and maybe my expectations were too high, but is not a bad spot to visit. read more

I've been to this place about 3 times and the food is always really good. My favorite part about this place is that the food is affordable. The prices are very reasonable considering that it's in Aventura area. They have a large variety of arepas. Personally, I love cheese and they stuff their arepas with A LOT of cheese. I think there is something for everyone on the menu. I got ham and cheese arepa and it was really filling. They have this green sauce which I think is a cilantro sauce that they bring to the table, it's so freaking good. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

Wow this has been the worst Venezuelan restaurant, I've visited by far. I've been in the Hotel and Restaurant business for over 15 years. I know that as an Executive Chef we always cryptic. But when you go to a restaurant to have breakfast 2 adults and 3 kids, and you order 2 arepas with scrambled eggs pico de Gallo and cheese, the eggs were over cooked, and the cheese extremely salty. 2 order of Tequeños and 3 of them did not have any cheese inside, the waitress notice and did not offer to bring more to replace the ones with our cheese. I ordered 2 eggs over easy and when they were cooking them they broke one egg so they added an extra egg, they were over medium and the eggs were over cooked. I asked for some bread for my Daugther and they sent a hoggie bread cut in half. We order 4 lemonades and I had a water. The total was $70. I have no problem paying any price for the food but it needs to be worth it and the service needs to be there, the waitresses that day were acting like they were doing us a favor. read more

In my opinion it is the best typical Venezuelan food you can get, specially their arepas are impossible to beat neither flavor or portion size. The delivery is always carefully packed with the food arriving warm. The service is friendly and fast, however the only negative things it is that sometimes they don't have the best waitresses (they seem unexperice) with makes the service not as great as the food. This was one of the places that made our "let's finally try this place out before we move" list and we were not disappointed with the food. Service was OK nothing to be amazed by, but the food was really good. We started off with the tequeños (deliciously string cheesy goodness) followed by a mountain of toppings on an arepa. I went with the arepa pabellón which IMO included some of the most delicious things: arepa, white cheese, meat, and fried plantains. *Cue food coma* My husband also ordered an arepa (cordon blue) which was an interesting take on the traditional dish and he enjoyed it. Truthfully I'm not sure why we never visited prior since it was around the corner from our place for years, but better late than never! They did have a lot of other items which looked good but considering we came with the sole purpose of indulging in arepas, that's all we could stomach. read more

How about no stars? The food is nothing special. It's their own take on other place's foods. The table spans is minimal. The service is remedial, but they expect an 18% service charge and a 20% tip in top of that. When questioned about their 42% tax they double down stating than more than half of their customers tip 60%. People, why are we putting up with this?! read more

I have the same conclusion about Avila as I had in my recent review of Little Bread (a sandwich shop reinventing classic sandwiches in Little Havana), which is: if you are a fan of arepas, this place is probably for you. But I'm new to arepas, and judging purely on the quality of the product and its cost versus other local (non-arepa) options, I have to say "good, not great." The shredded beef and Gouda that I bought and photographed was $8, so if you sit down with it (the place is not really geared toward take-out), and add a tip it's going to be a pretty expensive $10 lunch. The same $8 base price will get you a burrito with very similar high-quality ingredients (braised beef, shredded pork, etc), but twice the size, and enough left over to buy a drink with. Rent is not cheap in Aventura, but to make it, I think Avila will need to review its pricing, and maybe consider a take-out window. If you are an arepa fanatic, go. If not, maybe not. Interesting list of risottos on the menu I posted too, but again, it's high end pricing for such a casual setting. read more

Pros: Lots of choices, great quality, the love put into the food, great prices, excellent service, and the atmosphere of feeling like you are part community the more you go there.
