I called and quickly was able to schedule something with an instructor the following week. They provided a calendar invite and my instructor, Devon text me as a reminder of our appointment. No issues finding the facility with the provided address and I was greeted promptly with the waiver documents and request for copy of an ID. I sat down with Devon who explained the agenda and inquired about my reasoning for wanting to do a Discovery Flight. We went out to the airfield to conduct pre-flight checks of the plane and what to look for during the process and why. After waiting on the fuel truck for a few minutes, we got underway and spent the next hour in the air flying around. It reminded me of my first time driving a car and that overwhelming feeling of trying to safely operate a vehicle and over time developed a rhythm of comfort to be able to do other things while driving. Flying seems to be no different with all the gauges to manage direction, altitude, fuel, etc. There is an added level of complexity managing the map (our location) which was on an iPad during my trip to understand no fly areas, change of radio frequencies/airspace, etc. Devon let me steer while on the ground as well as in the air, adjust speed, altitude, etc with his oversight. I put on a lightweight jacket prior to departure but found myself getting warm in the air with the sun beating on us. Airflow and space in the cockpit to move around are limited so it's best to be situated prior to getting in. Despite having the gift certificate that was purchased about 9 months ago, they charged me a $10 surcharge as a result of fuel cost increases. I didn't argue against it in the moment. It was an insightful learning experience that I would recommend to anyone thinking about flying or wanting a unique experience. I would enjoy the opportunity to become licensed but that also requires a time and funding commitment that has to be aligned with priorities.

This place absolutely rocks - definitely come here for the flight lessons!…read more I came here for an introductory helicopter flight lesson on a whim and was extremely impressed from beginning to end. The quality and detail involved in the instruction here is superb - you feel like you're being given all of the information you need, from the basics to more complex properties of the helicopters. There was no point where I felt like the information was overwhelming or over-simplified: it seemed like the right mix of education and beginner's instruction. As for the flight, it's a blast! While I was far from talented at piloting the helicopter, I was given quite a lot of control over time, and I felt increasingly comfortable as time went on. I felt safe and monitored the entire time - even when a lot of wind blew the helicopter around, the instructor was available to make things right quickly and effortlessly. Needless to say, if you have the time and the money, give this place a shot!

He was very personable and knowledgeable. He pointed out various landmarks and places that we would be interested in seeing. He took the time to explain everything and throughly check the vehicle, it made us feel very safe and comfortable. Seth answered all questions, and even cracked a few jokes. I would definitely recommend them for celebrating a special occasion or just a romantic date. Make sure to ask for Seth by name you won't be disappointed!

That instructor's unfamiliarity with several of the FARs was disappointing. Eventually I went over to two other schools on the field and they would provide instruction. I have nearly 800 flight hours and they would not fly with me because my 3rd class medical had expired. You do not need a medical, current or otherwise, to receive instruction. Additionally, to fly UAS (drones) or Light Sport (LSA) using private pilot privileges, you do not need a current medical, only a flight review. There is nothing in the FARs that requires a medical for a flight review. However, it is required to exercise the privileges as a pilot in command of a standard category, LSA, or UAS. If you are flying standard category aircraft you need the medical. I had contacted the FSDO (FAA) and AOPA Pilot Protection program to confirm and the instructor would still not fly with me or do my flight review. I did get FAA and AOPA legal interpretation of the FARs. This wasn't a disagreement over the insurance or the preference of the instructor BUT over the FARs, which P--- should have known. Understandably, the school has to support their instructor even if they are wrong. They would not allow me to fly their aircraft or with their instructors. I walked to two other schools on the field, talked to their instructors, and have flown with 4 of the instructors at those other schools. This is an older review (~2 years) that disappeared. If the Dir/Ops wasn't nice it would be 0 stars if I could.

My background is…read morehaving ran a twin-engine flight school and a single-engine flying club in Georgia so when I surveyed the schools as a place to do my flight reviews, and send friends and their children to, AvAd came out on top. They also have been one of the main schools at Leesburg while others have come and gone. They also hire and train students and retired or career changing professionals to run the front desk, giving them aviation management and dispatch experience. I have flown with a few of the instructors up here and they are all different in how they teach but all are focused on safety, fun, learning, and promoting aviation. "Uncle Mike" is a fantastic advocate for aviation and even politely spent time going over weight and balance. I was 314 or 317 at the time and made it down to 270, which opened up the ability to fly other aircraft like the 172z. I made it down to 253 a few weeks ago and 230 will open up all aircraft, help me live longer, and make it easier to pass my 2nd class medical that I need for my commercial. Mike reviewed this with me very professionally, very politely, and shared his journey with me. He also took my son for a lesson. You would be hard pressed to find a better instructor, human being, safety, and aviation advocate. Safety is always at the top of my list because mistakes in aviation can be very unforgiving. You can fly safely in safe aircraft and still have fun. My favorite instructors are "Uncle Mike" and Mitch. However, I have also really enjoyed time learning from Bob, Ray and past instructors. Buck left for OpenAir, Dan went to fly KingAirs and Connor went to fly Learjets. This is part of aviation. Instructors are hard to find and good instructors are Unicorns. AvAd has had quite a few unicorns and some remain! Eventually they will build their 1000 hours with a degree from Liberty and go to the airlines with their ATP-R or get their 1500 and move on. That's just how aviation goes during a strong economy. Their aircraft are well maintained, particularly for flight school aircraft. I really enjoy flying the 182, the Cherokee Six, and the Grumman Cougar but also dropped weight so I could fly safely within the weight and balance envelope in the 172. My goal is to drop enough weight to fly LSAs like the 162 for fun! Bob and his family are amazing for aviation and have stellar employees and nice aircraft.
