My five star review is for the food. I'm such a food lover and Italian food is so delicious. I have dined here once plus ordered food to take home once. We have dined upstairs at their other restaurant a couple times too. When we enjoyed dinner at Avellino we had 8 in our party and our waiter, (Dan I think) was perfect! Not to mention the exquisite flavor in the food. I ordered the homemade ricotta gnocchi bologonase. Wow! Yumm! The salad with burratta is to die for. I believe they make their own mozzarella. The only thing we didn't like was my boyfriends smoked mozzarella ravioli, but that's on us because we realized we just don't like smoked cheese. The flavor in everything was great. We also tried Parmesan risotto, meatballs and many other items. Oh and desert....don't miss that part. I will be returning soon. read more

This was a spur the moment option after going to Treehouse Brewing. Deb the hostess was most accommodating considering it was a Saturday night and we had no reservations. Christine our server, was attentive and well versed. She added a meatball to the meatball app so all 4 of us could sample and they were comparable to my Nonnie's. Well balanced and deliscious marinara. My wife and I had the chicken saltimbocca with mushroom risotto and prosciutto. One word. AMAZING. Made a reservation for Friday night; once we arrived we were seated promptly at the best seat in the restaurant, in the corner near the window. I was a little surprised that the restaurant wasn't completely full, especially for a Friday. It was a cute and cozy but low key restaurant. Our server Daniel was very friendly and outgoing. Shh...he even gave us extra bread..which was amazing soft, doughy and delicious. The special appetizer of the night sounded great, shrimp bruschetta however we did not get it. If you get it, let me know how it is. We ordered the fettucine bolognese and the chicken marsala. The marsala came over truffled mushroom risotto which was cooked perfectly. The sauce was thicker than I'm used to but it was very good. The bolognese definitely tasted homemade which you could tell. The meat sauce had nice chunks of meat in it. Well I would put this on my avoid list. Service is sub-par but not only because of poor execution but poor planning by management. Not enough staff and poor training. We waited probably 25 minutes for initial service but at least that long for our plates to be cleared. Polite staff but overwhelmed. Entrees arrived eventually but my filet was over cooked. Don't judge a book by its cover! This is a hidden gem and by far one of the best Italian themed restaurants I have been to. On the exterior you may question your choice but don't be fooled. This restaurant was highly recommended and I attended as part of a work group. Wish I had obtained the servers name because he was attentive and yet unobtrusive with his service given it was a work dinner. He made excellent appetizer and wine recommendations. (Calamari was unique and not typical). Dinner was excellent (I chose the salmon and it was cooked just right) Will definitely find a reason to visit again! read more

This thanksgiving was very small and special for my family so we decided to order in. My husband and I are not from Sturbridge but it's where my dad lives. We found Avellinos and decided to try it. It was a great decision. The turkey dinner was delicious, substantial and reasonably priced. We all loved it. Even my dad who is in hospice thought it was very good. I took the misses here for date night. The service was impeccable. We were greeted as soon as we walked through the door. We were seated by the window and we enjoyed the view and the ambience as we chatted about our day. The transition from being seated to the waiter introducing his him self seem seamless. I had the Shellfish Risotto and the misses had the Chicken Piccata. We both enjoyed our meals... I remember looking up at the misses after having my first bite and saying, "damn this is good as hell!!" I would recommend this place for date night. read more

We hosted a bridal shower at Avellino this past weekend and could not have been more pleased with how everything went. Danielle helped us plan the event and she was extremely helpful. Christine was our server and she was EXCELLENT. She was very friendly and provided us with amazing service. The other reviews don't lie, the food was delicious! Several recent trips across the border convinced me that the ever improving dining options in Sturbridge are the best kept secret from CT diners. Avellinos is case in point. We went 7pm Thursday night. Place was nearly empty. Pretty old building that used to house the Whistling Swan (the Duck tavern is still up stairs). Double doors open to the street and there is a nice small hardscape patio. Food is quality Italian starring fresh pasta dishes. Has bruschetta and meatball starters bet good. Try salmon with lemon risotto mushroom and spinach ravioli or seafood stew. Had braised lamb over saffron papperdelle with root vegetables. Not exactly seasonal but tasted great. Lemon panda cotta and chocolate cake and Linzer torte were hits as well With cocktails and wine bill was 125 a couple soup to nuts; why isn't this place packed? Yesterday we had our baby shower at Avellino. We worked with Danielle to plan the event; selecting napkin colors, selecting the menu (a combination of brunch items from Avellino, the Duck, and Cedar Street), planning seating arrangements, and etc. My attention to detail was a bit out of control but Danielle was so sweet and welcoming to all my ideas, and served as a great sounding board. The day of the event we had Christine and Dan as our servers... they were INCREDIBLE!! They were so attentive to both me and my husband and all of our 40 guests. The room decor was beautiful. The food... oh my goodness it was SO GOOD. Guests walked into the event and were welcomed by fresh juices, coffee, tea, and of course... the Mimosa and Bloody Mary Bar!! We had the Rare Duck Breast Crostini w/ Sweet Corn Relish +  Sugarcane Skewered Shrimp w/ Molasses Rum for hor d'oeuvres and they did not disappoint!! I could have eaten the entire tray of each myself. Our buffet consisted of delicious assorted pastries, stuffed french toast with warm fruit compote, maple mascarpone cheese, vanilla bean whipped cream, & pure maple syrup + vegetarian frittata + applewood smoked bacon + home fries. I'm dreaming of the food still. So delicious. Everyone had such a great time. It was everything we dreamt up AND MORE thanks to the amazing and lovely crew at Avellino. Jenny was the server and she was very nice and accommodating. A good waitress! There was plenty of parking and the location is very nice. The inside of the restaurant is decorated in authentic Italian style with murals on the walls and nice quiet music. The appetizer was great; a risotto with a creamy short rib stuffing that was delicious. The Caesar salad with prosciutto was good and the prosciutto was not chewy. The meals were great. The chef accommodated us by creating fresh fettuccini to go with my veal even though that's not how it's listed on the menu. Everyone else's dishes were great too. All in all a great place. We had a nice meal here. Arrived around 6:00 on a Tuesday evening and were immediately seated. Only 3 other groups dining in the Avellino part of the restaurant with us, so it was a wonderful, quiet atmosphere. It's a pet peeve of mine to be in a restaurant so loud with chatter that I cannot hear the other people in my own party, but that was absolutely NOT an issue here. The building is beautiful inside and sitting next to the front windows at sunset time was lovely. Our server was cordial but not overly warm or friendly, but handled us adequately. The bread and olive oil brought to the table was delicious. A really, really nice flavor in the oil. We ordered the gorgonzola bread appetizer which was not at all what either of us expected. It was a whole loaf of bread sitting in pesto sauce with melted gorgonzola poured on top, served with a steak knife. It was messy and challenging to eat, but certainly quite tasty. The chicken piccata is served on risotto instead of pasta and was absolutely delicious. The chicken was NOT overcooked and was just delightful. The gnocchi bolognese was okay. Both dishes were VERY under seasoned which is something I have not encountered in a fine dining restaurant in SOME time. We would certainly go back but are in no rush to do so. The atmosphere was fantastic, service okay, and some food great, some food ehhh- okay. It is formal, so not sure it would be a place my 11 and 13 year old children would really enjoy joining us. But a wonderful place for an intimate, romantic meal. read more

Had a 6pm reservation for 4. After ordering a drink and deciding upon dinner choices, about 1/2 hour had passed. We subsequently were served dinner and then ordered coffee. While enjoying our 2nd cup, the manager approached us and asked us to please move on because he needed the table for his next reservation. He told us we could go sit by the bar if we wanted to stay. It was 8pm. We hadn't finished our coffee. We obliged ,left our coffee and said nothing. However, upon reflection, I feel this was totally rude and inappropriate. I regret not having said as much to the man at the time. All four of us left with a bad impression and will never go back there again. If you decide to go there, eat quickly, don't linger and enjoy conversation; there is apparently a limit on the time you get to sit at a table! read more

Its a cool building, sharing space with a Pub, another restaurant "The Duck", which all seem to be under the same management. Avellino appears to be the dressier of the 3 spots. The food was tasty but pretty rich, but that just means you get leftovers. Our food took some time to get out, this may be because the 3 places share a kitchen. So the newest addition to Sturbridge and definitely a good addition. Brought to you by A Table 3 Restaurant Group (who also own Ceder Street Grill - my favorite Sturbridge restaurant). Chef comes from Enrico's Pizza (which isn't my favorite) but Avellinos has some very delicious Italian food. We started out with the Tomato Mozzarella Salad - which was delicious and had a great balsamic vinaigrette. I had the Chicken Parm - which was amazing -cooked to perfection and a giant portion (you could easily share it with someone else). I added the fresh linguine to the Chicken Parm for $2.95 and didn't even touch it after my first bite. Too Al Dente, not hot and the sauce wasn't great. Ohh well - the rest of the meal was fantastic. Is this place better then Rovezzi's?!? I'm not sure - a tough call. read more

I chose Avelino's in Sturbridge for date night last night. I'll start by saying that the drinks were very good, the food was pretty good but that the rest was a real disappointment. When we arrived the hostess went into the restaurant to see what tables she had open, when she came back she led us to a small table right outside the kitchen door. I told her that was not acceptable and then she led us to a better table in another room. I did take her aside to explain that attempting to seat someone in that very busy spot when there are other seats available is an insult. The waiter was harried and inattentive to detail. He took our drink order but ran off before we could order our appetizer. After returning with our drinks I told him we wanted to order a starter. As soon as he brought that out he asked if we were ready to order. Why is it that so few restaurants understand that cocktails and appetizers are meant to be savored and not rushed by the entree that arrives while still eating? We had the calamari. It was drowning in sauce and a bit rubbery. I would try something else if you dine there. The meal was good. I had the mushroom risotto with scallops and my husband ordered the beef shank ravioli and he enjoyed it. We asked about dessert and were shown a menu. When I ordered the Key Lime Pie the waiter apologized for not having mentioned that they were out of it. By then I had had enough and we just took the check I see that this restaurant has plenty of good reviews. Either this was an off night or this place is simply not up to my date night standards. Wife and I had an enjoyable experience here on a surprisingly busy Wednesday evening. restaurant is well lite and pleasant...server(Daniel) was excellent.....and the food was very good and plentiful Its a casual,relaxing place.. We started with my wifes usual pinot grigio. I had a "little Italy"(weak $11 cocktail). we shared a delicious Caesar salad..very fresh croutons. Wife had the scallops with butternut squash risotto. I had the veal parm....2 big pieces sitting atop a bed of spaghetti. Both entrees were very very good. prices seem in line for the quality and quantity you get. ***Update: Both my husband and I got sick after eating here! Left much to be desired! The food was okay, not good nor great. What truly earned the one star review was the service. With two large parties occupying the entire dining room, we were seated outside. We were totally fine with this but we were not expecting to be ignored. We had to ask for appetizer plates after our app was brought out by the runner. We only saw our waitress three times all night. No one checked in to see if our meals were okay or to offer us cheese, pepper, or water. It took over 15 minutes to finally receive the water after we asked and it was not even brought out by the waitress. She also did not even bring us out the change from the bill nor wish a good night! What truly showed the level of service at this restaurant was when another family who were clearly regulars was seated next to us, they were greeted with bread, drinks, and three wait staff! On our first wedding anniversary we were hoping for a nice evening out at a new restaurant, Avellino failed to deliver this! P.S. I NEVER write reviews but had to warn others! read more

An OK but pricey Italian restaurant. Food is decent but by no means memorable. In my personal opinion they have merely imitated another place in the area. Their Bouillabaisse was pretty good but virtually identical to the other place's, ingredient by ingredient. This buyer's group has taken over so many previously privately owned restaurants in a not-so-large town that many of us find it disconcerting. The restaurant was highly reviewed so we tried out a number of dishes - everything was pretty bland, heavily sauced (not in a good way - just too much fat), and the vegetables were cut up helter-skelter (one piece was 2" wide while the next was 1/2" - so some of the veggies were overcooked and others were under cooked) - definitely did not seem like there was a professional chef running the kitchen. read more

What in the holy heck happened to this once great spot? This was once a go-to place for a GREAT dining experience with an Italian themed menu. Now its just short of disaster. It begins with the reservation, where the confirmation comes with a stern message the table will be held for no more than 4 min and 34 seconds after the stated time. But guess what. The crowd was sparse, and no wonder given the experience. We could have arriv ed 20 min late and still have no trouble being seated. We sat down to a table that wobbled badly and had to be chocked up to be stable enough to use. Drinks were sparse in size. The bartender literally didn't know how to mix my wife's fairly standard order and she had to make a change. We had to ask for bread service, and the bread was ordinary and came with less than a tablespoon of oil for dipping. I will say the house salad was pretty good (the one highlight). My wife ordered a filet, simple enough but ordinary in execution. I ordered a dish I've had there before that was once excellent ... short rib ragu over pasta. Tonight's version had a few shreds of meat in there, mixed in a sauce little better than a jar version of light-gray-brown gravy, and definitely NOT the braised short ribs in a rich dark sauce the dish should be, and used to be in this restaurant. If you remember what it once was, don't go back and spoil the memories. We won't return until assured a complete change has been made, starting with the chef. read more

We ordered an antipasto plate. It had roasted butternut squash which was delicious, cubed pancetta, that was ok, sliced salami, that was fine too, but it had a pile of hot cherry peppers and a pile of banana peppers, and then a ball of goat cheese and two slices of toast. Not sure who wants to eat all those hot peppers and banana peppers, Would of preferred some sliced cheeses and more meats, for the price its not good. My husband got seafood on top of risotto, the mussels were bad, but they did give him extra shrimps in place of the mussels. but was not worth the price, my meal had no taste, for an Italian restaurant it was not Italian. Went to Avellino for my birthday celebration with my husband. The food, service, and atmosphere were all top-notch. The Ricotta Gnocchi Bolognese was quite possibly one of the best meals I've ever had. We came here for Mothers Day. Excellent choice! The fixed menu with 4 courses had options for everyone's taste, the kids menu had homemade mac and cheese (which was delicious) and the price was excellent for the quality of food.
