Chicken and waffles and chicken tenders and fries and a sampler breakfast plate. Everything was expected from a diner. Would recommend . Mom and pops feel. Ashamed to say, it has been so long since we had been over this way. Avalon diner has all of your down-home favorites cooked just like your grandma would make it. They also adjusted their hours to accommodate dinner on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Those nights they're open until 7 PM! The rest of the week and weekend they close at 2 PM. My husband opted for one of the specials which was meatloaf and mashed potatoes. He asked to customize his mashed potatoes, a little bit with some shredded cheddar cheese, and a side of sour cream. One of the few restaurants we've ever been to that actually accommodated it. Meatloaf is moist with good seasoning and mashed potatoes were well done. I opted for the Montecristo with fries, as I mentioned before their fries are perfect! Sandwich was really good. I love that it's served with blackberry preserves as it gives a little bit more hardiness to the very sweet dish that it is. if you were in the Winter Garden area would highly suggest that you check them out! Checked out several places in the area for brunch on a Sunday morning. Not an easy feat with churches letting out around that time. Thankfully found this one on Yelp and really had no wait. The place was packed, inside and out, and our party of 4 stood at the hostess station outside waiting unsuccesfully for someone to notice us. A couple sitting at a nearby table suggested that we just grab the open table outside and seat ourselves. They said they were regulars and that usually works out fine. Sure enough, within about 10-15 minutes, a server came by asking us what we wanted to drink. There were about 5 or 6 tables outside. Not sure how many were inside but it appeared to be a small place and super packed, so no thank you. The weather held up, we enjoyed a nice breeze and it wasn't too hot so sitting outside worked out perfectly for us. The omelettes were fairly basic and really didn't have much seasoning on them. Same goes for the home fries. The serving size was ample and filling. If you are avoiding bread, you can order a serving of sliced tomatoes as a replacement, which is a nice option. Avalon was on our way to a farm the other morning so we stopped by for breakfast/lunch with a friend. The service was decent, nobody seemed to really be socially distancing though and none of the cooks we saw had a mask on at all, kind of disappointing considering all that's going on. My friend got the Cuban sandwich with fries, my hubby got chicken and biscuits, and I went for just the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits themselves were pretty good and the gravy was your normal sausage gravy. My eggs were cooked just to my liking and the sausage patties were good also. The chicken for the chicken and biscuits was a good size and definitely filling for breakfast or lunch. My friend thought his cuban was okay- the stone ground mustard threw him off guard but otherwise he said it was good. We tried the hamburger, cod sandwich and monte cristo sandwich and everyone liked their selected dish. My favorite of these three was the cod sandwich as it delivered the perfect bite. My brother was grateful for the free soft drink refills and happily accepted one in a go-cup for the road. We were disappointed that the much talked about Atlantic Pie (similar to key lime pie but made with lemons per our waitress) was not available but the Oreo pie was a good fallback option. Due to social distancing they also have outside dining but it is limited seating because it a small location. My family from all around the country gathered in Orlando for a week. We wanted to go to a "local" place for breakfast. The Avalon Diner wasn't too far away, so we opted for there. It didn't feel very "diner-ish," and the menu was just so-so for breakfast options. It felt pretty basic, and even my small hometown's diner has more unique options for breakfast. I ordered the Philly steak omelet. It was fine for basic food, but lacking significant flavor or spices. Since the omelets are "three egg omelets," my aunt asked the server if she could have an omelet with just one whole egg and then the whites from the other two. It's an odd request, granted, but basically all the cook has to do is not put the yolks of two of the cracked eggs into the mix. She was willing to pay the same price. The server continually told her no. Huh. My cousin had to ask for water three times before he got it. One of the times, she actually gave water to everyone but him. And there were other instances where it seemed like she just didn't care. So, the service was lacking (especially since it wasn't very busy) and the food was just average. If you like your food just average and questionable service, this is the "diner" for you. read more

With more early morning triathlon training comes more opportunities to try new brunch places. This was no different. There were a few surprises which really stuck with me post meal. I would like to share them. First was how homey the decor was. From the outside, it looks like no more than another place in a strip mall. However, once inside it changes. Bright white walls contrasting the dark brown booths. Lite by stain glass wall mounted fixtures. Once we sat down, our server came over and took our order. Shortly thereafter, she brought our drinks. She was very efficient, almost too efficient. It seemed very transactional verses other members of the staff. This brings me to number two. After our server took our order, we barely saw her. She did not check to see if our meal. She did ask if I wanted more coffee, but negated to notice the empty milk glass next to it. Finally, near the end of the meal she literally dropped the check at the table. Did not say anything and picked it up just as quickly. We even had to ask someone else for a box because our server was no where to be seen. No thank yous or wishes of appreciation for our business. It was kind of odd. My girlfriend even commented on it. Upon leaving no one said good bye or thank you as no one was at the host stand. I understand being a small business labor hours are not always the easiest to come by. People have to be used where they can bring the best value. However, saying that (in today's age) it is important to ensure their patron feels they made the right choice. Final thing which stuck with me was how good my omelet was. I ordered a Vegetable Omelet with Feta and Cheddar cheese. Perhaps it was the combination of the eggs and feta cheese, but it was amazing. The Omelet was cooked well, not runny and was filled well. It was the best part of the meal. Almost made me forget about the slightly dry potatoes. I would probably return, but only for the food. read more
