I'm new-ish to Houston (moved here early 2024) and this has become my go-to barber shop. No frills and affordable. I see Lorena when I go and she does a great job. I like this place because it's a no-nonsense barber shop (good haircut for a fair price). They always have good music playing and golf on the TV. It's pretty relaxing overall. I can normally call ahead and get in same-day, but occasionally I'll need to make a reservation for the next day. If you're looking for a no-nonsense/frills barber near downtown, this is the place to go. I recommend them and have been using them for over a year now. Great job! read more

I've been going here for years. Looks like they hired someone new. She cut my ear. As to the haircut, it was uneven crown and she thinned my eyebrows without asking. Generally would have given this place 5 stars if it wasn't this specific person. read more

You need to know what you are getting here before you come. Old school barber shop complete with shoe shine by hand options and two stylists. They say they do accept walk-ins but i would not attempt it, especially on a Saturday. Nestled under the stairs in the lobby of the strip center housing Armando's it can be a little hard to find at first. Once inside it is a full on time warp. Opened in the 1940s it looks like it inside, but we enjoyed that part of the neh-stahl-jah however you spell that,LOL We found it a great value at 35 for a mens cut sheerly on experience alone. My husband did not get the haircut he asked for but that is partly his fault because he explained it bad and didn't show them any pictures. I found what he described in one of the style books and sent it to his phone so he can show the lady next time. This is the best of community small business and we want to support it so it can be around another 80 years. read more

The workers are super friendly, and the environment itself it quite nice. However, we had made an appointment for 3 and we basically sat waiting for over 40 minutes... It could be because the only person that does the fades is an elderly man and he was a bit chatty from the looks of it. Which isn't a problem (usually) however having set an appointment felt pointless with the long wait time. The cut itself only took about 30ish minutes, but at that point I know my husband wanted to leave he just didn't want to be rude so we just waited.. Probably won't be going back, but I do wish the business well. read more

Haircuts are a personal thing! Either you get a great one or a terrible one - no in-between! At Avalon, it's always a great one. Lea has been cutting my hair for several years, and I followed her here a couple of years ago when she joined Avalon. The shop has decades of history. It is clean, the parking is easy and everyone is friendly. But the bottom line is that they know how to cut men's hair! Need a shave? They do that too. Shoes need shining? You can get that done while you're in the chair. I like a real barber shop. If you do too, give them a try. read more

Real Barbers. NOT foo foo stylists. Only licensed BARBERS can use a straight razor. They have been shaving my head for years. it's a respite from the rush hour. I come in for a trim and they cut my hair very short. Said I need a trim but I'm growing it out. Seems pretty clear that short is not the right look. The barber then tells me I have difficult hair to cut. read more

In days gone by, the shoeshine stand was a staple in train and bus stations, courthouses, hotels, and malls and usually found wherever professional businessmen gathered. I was trying to locate a shoe shine service, and my 80 year old mother mentioned that I should just look for a barbershop. I looked one up and voila! I found Mr. Willbertz. It was a good cut, I just thought it was kind of pricey at $21. Also kind of slow. I had to be somewhere at the top of the hour so when I mentioned this to my barber at around 40 past he did finish up pretty quick. There was one guy who had been sitting in his chair before I got there still getting a cut when I left. I think it was a good haircut, but I don't see the difference between a haircut from here, Raymond's, or Doug and Don's, except that the latter two charge $10 or so for a cut and this place charges $21. read more

I live in Chicago, but I only get my hair cut at Avalon barber. I always ask for Carolina as she is a superb professional designer who sticks with the traditional tools. She uses the scissors and comb as natural tools of her craft. I have never left with a unsatisfactory cut. I will return as soon as I am in back in town. Would recommend if you want a clean and smooth cut. read more

I have been coming here since 2001. Used to always get my haircut by Joe (rip) and I now go to Cindy. She's great. Spends a lot of time on my cut and has a great attention to detail. She might double, triple and quadruple check her work, basically, she takes her time and does a thorough job every time. Went in for a haircut and a shave. Haircut was great but worst shave of my life. The woman that did the shave clearly didn't know what she was doing (which is dangerous when she has a razor). The shave took over an hour and she seriously injured me. My face was completely red and hurt like hell. Also she missed several spots. Worst shave of my life. It's a classic Barber Shop and they do a great job. It's been there forever in this River Oaks location - lots of execs, judges, attorneys, and docs get their haircuts there. A Houston institution. Worth every dollar spent. They take their time and make sure not only you get a good haircut, but you have a good customer experience. Nothing good is cheap and nothing cheap is good. The price is very reasonalbe for the service and experience provided. If you want a quick cheap haircut you're probably in the wrong area of town. read more

I jumped around when I moved to Houston trying to find a place where I could get a good haircut and was always disappointed. That was until I found Avalon. I have had too many bad haircuts in the past and it is nice to finally be able to walk into a place and know that I am going to get a haircut that looks good. I have had a different person cut my hair almost every time and every one of them does a great job. An added bonus of coming here is that they have a guy that will shine your shoes or boots for a reasonable price. Way cheaper than downtown. In the end I will be coming to Avalon to get my haircut as long as I live in Houston. read more
