I almost spent over $12,000 on a repair that wasn't even needed -- I saved thousands bringing it to the dealship. I brought my car to Autopia in Bloomington after my check engine light came on because the dealership I normally use was fully booked. Autopia was able to get me in right away. I explained that we had already run a diagnostic and provided the codes. Later that day they told me those were "old codes" and that I needed an oil flush. I paid over $600, picked up my car, and the check engine light came back on as soon as I got on the interstate. I returned the car the next day and was told I needed a timing chain and that the repair would cost over $12,000. The manager also warned me not to expect my warranty to cover much of it and said I should be prepared to pay a lot out of pocket. When the warranty company sent an inspector, they approved $6,100. The inspector explained that Autopia's estimate was significantly higher than what they typically see and that the labor alone was over $4,500 when it should have been closer to $2,500. When my husband asked Autopia for a detailed breakdown of the charges, they refused and would only provide the total. At that point I decided to rescue my car and bring it to the dealership, and I'm very glad I did. The dealership determined the real issue was the engine, not the timing chain. If I had stayed at Autopia, I could have spent thousands on a repair that would not have fixed the problem. They had also missed a large hole in one of the hoses, which the dealership immediately pointed out. The engine replacement ended up costing $9,200, and my warranty covered 100% of the repair. I only paid my deductible. Unfortunately, I still paid Autopia over $600 for an oil flush that the dealership later said was unnecessary. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend avoiding this shop. read more

These guys are the best!! They go above and beyond with service and are priced reasonably. They offer shuttle rides and are extremely honest with what needs fixing and what doesn't. One of my cars needed a set of tires last year. They quoted me a price and then recommended a couple of other places where I could maybe find a similar set cheaper. I followed their advice, and it turns out their price was similar. That's just one of several stories I could tell about how great they are. Ask for John when you call. He's the answer man! They also don't treat women like idiots. To me, this is the best place to have your car serviced, no matter the make/model. I've had mostly Fords over the years, and now have a Volkswagen. I'm very glad that I've got a good relationship with Autopia because VW seems to prefer that car owners do nothing except drive their vehicles. Anything you need done MUST be done by a professional unless you've got the tools yourself. I'm not that interested, so I'll keep coming here for what I need. I recently experienced a not-so-great thing here, and I'm happy to say that John was right on it. Somehow, when I got my last oil change, something got stripped and my car was leaking oil. I'd noticed it on Wednesday and Thursday and Finally got the check engine light on Friday when I was driving back to the office from lunch with friends. I didn't think too much of it at first, but there was a lot of oil under my car when I left the office. I called John and he got me in despite the fact that it was 4:45. They close at 5pm. He checked the car and told me what happened. They ordered a rental car becuse mine was unsafe to drive. I'm looking forward to a positive conclusion to this the afternoon of June 17. If this does not happen, I'll update my review accordingly. In the meantime, I expect everything to go as wonderfully well as all other experiences I've had here. read more

Brought the car in for an oil change and diagnostic to find the cause of a sporadic stall. They identified and fixed the issue promptly. I checked part cost online against what they billed me; while it was possible to find a cheaper rebuilt part - they didn't mark up the part cost for new and charged me next to nothing for labor. After I picked up the car on my drive to work there was noticeable misfire (confirmed with OBD reading) I called them up and John said to bring it in and they'd take care of me. He's a man of his word; we couldn't be sure if the issue was caused from the work or not - so they replaced the part in question same day - no hassle necessary. While they're not bargain basement cheap on price - they are trustworthy and stand behind their work. I spent a lot of time to find an honest mechanic after moving - I'm relieved to say I found one. read more

Just asked to have my transmission fluid checked. A desk secretary with impeccable makeup asked the actual manager. She came back and told me baloney about a $55 charge including top off, if needed. Wow. They had lots of other cars, like a little vintage MG, etc., in for service and were busy. I felt as if they inflated a charge to make me go away or because their time was short, so they increased the money to win, either way. Funny thing was, I told them what type of car it was (2004 Impala), so they should have known all it was only a simple dipstick, which I did not know would take 5 seconds to check. I thought that it was in the bottom of the vehicle. That's why I asked them to check it. I next drove to rapid oil change, and they figured it out that it was just a dipstick and helped me check it for free. To me, "Autopia" should be renamed to "Dipstick", because disregarding small things is a poor sign of how they think/operate -- a business-first attitude to a potential customer. read more

My Miata was making a very loud squeaky sound between 1500-3000 rpm. I was expecting a major problem and major expenses to repair it. When I took my car in for an estimate, they quickly diagnose the problem to be loose bolt at the alternator belt and quickly fixed it on the spot. While the car was already there, they also performed a complete inspection of the car and told me everything was fine. I highly recommended this shop and will be taking my car back here for repair from now on. read more

About a week ago the clutch on my wife's Mazda, with nearly 150,000 on it, went kaput and I feared the worst. This 'clutch problem' occurred on a Sunday evening; we had the Mazda towed to Autopia (Bloomington) and my wife called the shop first thing Monday morning to get the bad news - like, we'd be without the car for three days and repairs would run $2,000. Fortunately, the repair was minor, we picked up the Mazda by the end of the day and our wallets were only $180 lighter. Why, then, does Autopia get five stars for such a small repair? Because this is indicative of the honest, quick and professional service we've received before from Autopia. Not once has my wife felt the guys were trying to pull the wool over her eyes and make unnecessary repairs. They've let us know which repairs are critical and which repairs can be postponed until our budget permits them. The shop has been accurate with estimated repair times and generous with rides to/from home or work. Our experiences at Autopia Bloomington have always met - and frequently exceeds - our expectations. I'm confident recommending them for all your automotive repair needs.
