I came into this bookstore with my child and had a very uncomfortable experience from the moment we were inside we were immediately watched. We had drinks with us, and the staff member confronted us about it, even though there was no signage or posted policy stating that drinks weren't allowed. We reassured her that we would be careful, but she responded that she would rather we not be there. The tone, body language, and overall interaction felt very unwelcoming and unnecessary. Instead of feeling like customers, we felt like we were being watched and treated with suspicion. As people of color, experiences like this can feel especially discouraging. Nothing was said outright, but the interaction left us feeling singled out, uncomfortable, and unwelcome especially when we were just trying to browse books and support a local business with my child. I hope management looks into how customers are approached and treated, and considers inclusivity and customer service training. Everyone should feel comfortable walking into a bookstore. Unfortunately, I won't be returning. read more

So much car and aviation history here. The entrance screams its uniqueness. Can't no body pass this store without being slightly curious! For the love of books, cars, airplanes, cars, books, this is seriously a godsend! The lady who runs the place knows a sh*t ton about cars. She will school you in the history of this neighborhood and how this unique store came to be. Not only does she know a lot about cars and stuff, she can also recommend you places to shop and eat at around this store. Looking for car events? She knows more than the fliers she's putting out. Any car in particular you want advice on? She probably drives that car, or will refer you to talk to some of the people she got to know well that is just as much a car enthusiast as she is. There are multiple events throughout the month packed with book signing, meeting the authors and crushing on celebrities that are just like you, that also want to be behind the wheels of the most interesting and unique cars in the world. read more

Don't bring a young child! That sounds counterintuitive since this is a bookstore devoted to subjects that many kids love--airplanes and cars. However, an encounter with the unhappy, f-bomb dropping owner isn't worth the risk. And if you ask her to tone down the language in the presence of a kid (as I did), she just might tell you to mind your own business and insult you out of the store as well. It's a shame really--the place has a extensive and eclectic collection of aviation and automotive books. But I can't recommend it. The customer service vibes are way too negative. I hope the owner finds a way to cheer up--at least in the presence of customers. read more

When I first came across this bookstore I was so happy, a bookstore that is totally devoted to aviation and automobiles! My first visit to the store was great and the man that helped me was extremely helpful and really nice. I told him that I had found my new favorite place to shop. I couldn't wait to go back. Well, after my last visit I won't be returning. At first I wasn't sure if there was an employee in the store, a couple of customers were looking at books in the front of the store. I continued to look around at all the when I finally saw the clerk sitting in the back glaring at me, not in a way of "I think you're a shoplifter but like I didn't belong there because I was female and there is no possibility that I could truly be interested in cars. I finally went up to him so I could purchase something and he gave me so much attitude. I guess I should've just left instead of making him get up out of his seat and walk to the register. When made my purchase, he continued to treat me with such disrespect and contempt that I will NEVER step foot in that bookstore again. No one that acts like that should be in the retail business. It's really a shame because it would be an amazing place to shop if not for the horrible misogynistic clerk who can't be bothered to do his job. read more

If you can't find a book or magazine on cars or airplanes that you want here, you won't find it anywhere. This little store has tons of reading material and DVDs on everything related to all types of cars, both classic and current, foreign and domestic. Lots of stuff on airplanes too but most of the store is devoted to automotive. Some of the car books are geared toward non-car people like myself; historical and humorous tomes. Parking on the side street or in back of the store. The staff is helpful and they have a restroom for customers who browse a little too long (but no reading material allowed in there!). read more

I travel for work. I saw, many years ago, a book at the Hoepli Bookstore in Milano that I regretted picking up due to its size. It was about one of my favorite Italian designers. Book wasn't there on a following trip, nor was it available for reorder, nor online. Been hunting for this silver hardcover book for years. Osaka, no. Singapore, no. Vevey, no. Leningrad, Paris, Schaffhausen, Stuttgart, London, Denver, NYC, eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, no, no, no. In disbelief I happened on it behind a glass cabinet here. I have been going to this mecca of Automotive books for years, participated in their Saturday Car Shows, included them in the events of a National Car Meet, had my wife suggest "gift certificates to Autobooks" to people who wanted to know what I'd want for my birthday... and I even took my 4 year old there so he could pick out his first toy car. All of that was ruined this past Saturday morning by the grumpy old woman who owns the place. My son saw a book about Fire Engines (his latest obsession) and yelled, "Daddy, come see! A Fire Engine book." As I walked to him, thrilled that he was excited about a book, a woman in the office above (who I later found out was the owner), admonished my son, snarled at him to "Stop Yelling", and continued with her snide comments until we left. Loud or not, my son was already one of their customers and found something he liked and was excited about. When 4 year old's get excited about things they don't hold back their emotions... and this woman should have known better. From now on, I'll just go there, write down the book titles I like and order them (for less money) on Amazon. In this economy, businesses need more than a specialized selection of product to keep the register ringing. They need to have some customer service as well. "Stop Yelling?" OK, Lady... but I've stopped buying too. read more

This little shop is a total gem. If you're looking for any kind of automobile or aviation related literature, whether it is a manual or a coffeetable book, this is the place to go. Really, in a world full of Barnes and Noble and Borders, they don't make them like this anymore: shops run by gruff but personable dudes who are totally knowledgeable and passionate about what they have in their store. I used to LOVE coming here back when I had my '61 Comet. They sold me this book about Ford six-cylinder engines that was so informative - and it looked handmade and printed at home! In other words, they have everything. My dad flies freight airplanes for a living, and he has nothing but excellent things to say about them. Yay! Go to Autobooks! read more

If the little ol' lady from Pasadena were still alive, you could probably find her here. A favorite of mine and Jay Leno's; as well. This little store has to be the mecca of all things related to cars, motorcycles and aeroplanes. You name it books, magazines, videos, die cast models from around the world can be found at this quaint little shop. Saturday mornings are my favorite here, usually you can find Jay Leno' with one of his numerous antique automobiles after he finishes tape the Tonight show. I personally have seen about 6 of his cars and I am amazed every time. They have been in business for almost 60 years and many authors hold signings at this famed establishment. Every time I go in I spend way too much time, perusing all that is on display. If your into cars, new or old, this is a definite place to go. read more

Really good specialized bookstore for all of your car, plane, military, etc. needs. Both new and old books on hand, while you probably won't find any relics, they would probably make every effort to help you find it. The magazines selection is very good and they carry a good number of the European car magazines that are so much better than most of our stateside crap. Beyond the obvious they also have videos, models, and misc. other novelties. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are also ready top help out. read more

I don't really know anything about the working of cars, but I do know that I find vintage cars very sexy. In a Steve McQueen is a real man kind of way. Not in a David Cronenberg's 1996 "Crash" kind of way (which I haven't even seen because the trailer scares me: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1948517145/). A good looking muscle car will stop me in my tracks more than any handsome man will, so when I walk in this store, I feel awash with the good type of testosterone. Not the dumb kind of Axe Spray, new car testosterone. The "I know how to work on my own car" and "The paint job on this beauty is prettier than any manicure you can get at a cheap strip mall" kind of testosterone. The best car bookstore anywhere. Tina and Chuck are REAL car people and their passion really shows through how they run the store. The selection is everything and more you could possibly want. They are always more than fair with prices and are honest people. If you can't find a book or magazine they will go out of their way to special order it. The best place to to look at and buy Automobile and Aeroplane books in the western United States. They also have many magazines on Autos and Aeroplanes including foreign magazines. They have lots of Author visits along with coffee and donuts on Saturday mornings. I have seen superstars in the car world show up and buy stuff. Tina, the owner, knows so much about tear and plane books that if she does not then it is not important. My daughter was sent in today to buy my Christmas present. They were very helpful. This place is FANTASTIC!! With the help of the owner, Tina, (who is more knowledgeable about anything and everything to do with cars than almost any guy I know) ... I have found the GREATEST gifts for my car nut of a husband, who is incredibly hard to buy for!! As everyone else has been saying, if this store doesn't have the book you're looking for, it probably doesn't exist ... OR, if it does exist, they can probably order it for you! Tina just ordered one for me that is actually going to be MADE especially for my husband! It's going to be NUMBERED, and PRINTED, on a special page inside the book, will be: "Produced for ... (my husbands name)"! It's a Christmas gift ... (so don't tell him) ... but, I KNOW he is really going to love it! We live far away, but, on a recent trip, we finally got to visit the store in person and I found it to be nice and bright, clean and comfortable! omg. this is basically like the car section of amazon.com in a real book store. it's SUPER awesome. if i lived close enough, i'd totally come here every saturday! they have books of many many marques and i suspect can order anything you want. they have some rare and hard-to-find ones, too, as well as the whole gamut of car magazines. they also have a used section that you can sometimes find really cool stuff in. they even have toys! you can find quality diecast models like the autoart and other high end ones. last but not least, on weekends you can see real cool cars in the parking lot. there's more to tell, so just go check it out. there may be other stores like this in LA, but pretty sure this one is the best. love this place! read more
