When Yarnell's and Frontier Infiniti couldn't fix my stall issues with my Infiniti I30, I took it to Auto Tec, as they were close by where I live and they received good ratings on Car Talk's website as well as they were noted as being affordable and proficient in resolving problems. I wanted to take my car someplace where I was able to speak directly with the person who would also be working on my car. Auto Tec seemed to be the place as it was a family run business. I called to make and appointment and the lady asked about the problems and I described it. She asked me to bring in my car the next day. My stall issue was getting worse so I just brought it in that night and parked it in the lot. Next day I had a friend drive me there and I was the first one in line to drop off my car. I explained it to the guy in front the problems and he said he'll look into it. I even gave him the same print out and suggestions I gave to Yarnell's and Frontier Infiniti, the ones I've spent hours researching of possible issues. I specifically told them to inspect everything else besides the IAC Valve as that's been inspected to death. I get a call from the mechanic the next day saying that my RPM needle is way too low when my car is in idle (550 to 600 RPM usually when idle). He said he turned some screw to increase the RPM position when idle and he stated he will take the car home and drive it to work tomorrow to see if anything happens. He called the next day and said the car never stalled on him and he's been driving it around for past 2 days, that it seems like the problem is gone. When I got there I was surprised how much the charge was. I only had to pay $35 for the fix. I was expecting maybe $75 or more. My car did not stall for about a week. One week later my car stalled again. It's a hassle to be without a car so I decided to bring it back to Frontier Infiniti as my warranty was still valid there, plus they would give me a rental free of charge. I found out later that turning the screw to increase RPM when idle is actually useless as the computer is the one that actually controls the RPM needle, so eventually the computer will re-adjust the RPM needle when idle. This was a nice psychological trick why it lasted. 4/5 stars because they are nice people and affordable. I would only recommend Auto Tec for routine fixes and minor tune-ups. I would not use Auto Tec if I had serious issues, since obviously they didn't even know that the RPM needle is adjusted by the computer and not by a screw. They probably couldn't figure out the problem and figured I didn't know anything about my car, thus telling me something and hopped it would be fixed. Plus: Cheap, nice people. Minus: Can't resolve major issues. read more

I found Auto Tec from Yelp, and after my experience with Don and his team, the five-star rating is well deserved. Let's be honest - the vast majority of us are not automotive experts. All we care about at the end of the day is the problem is fixed in a reasonable amount of time at a fair price, and being kept updated during the process. Don made an immediate impression when I called to describe the problem my car is having and to schedule my appointment. He was friendly and took the time to fully understand my concerns. He made sure a technician came with me on a test drive to make sure they fully understood the problem I was experiencing when I dropped off my car. The promised phone call updates came when it was promised and I was kept informed of the progress of the work. Work was complete on time and within estimate I was given. I've been bringing my car to Tony at Auto Tec for over 15 years, when they were located on Los Gatos Blvd.. My Lexus has some leak and Lexus Dealer said it has a crack and needs to be fixed to the tune of over $5000. I take my car to Auto Tec and they put it up on the rack. He said there is no sign of a crack, there is a leaky gasket and it would require 10-15 man hours to fix it. But since the fluid level is still full he said it would be ok to wait until I see a big puddle - then I should be concerned. Unless I don't like the leak. $35 and a dozen doughnuts and I'm out of there in 30 minutes. It's nice to get a straight answer so I could made the decision when I want to spend the money. read more

Auto Tec is the place to go. I couldn't believe all the 5 stars they have received from Yelp. I just got to go myself to experience what everybody was talking about since I have been cheated and lied to in the past regarding my car. Anyhow, I got my Scion serviced by Van today. He was very professional and honest. Got my breaks done, routers resurfaced and my car runs great now. However, I made the appointment with Anna. I have to say... she sold me with her kindness over the phone. The shop is clean and welcoming. And the 'oh so cute dog!' They service ALL TYPE of cars!!! As I called around, certain shops would only take BMWs or Hondas, etc. Anyhow, would absolutely recommend family and friends to come to this place. It's hard to find a good, honest mechanic, but that's exactly what you'll find at Auto-Tec. I took my car to the dealer to check on a problem and they said I needed a new power steering pump and new rear brakes, all for $1450. I called up Auto-Tec and Van estimated that he could do it for $680! After I took my car in, Van figured that my brakes could last me another 8,000 to 10,000 miles, and I didn't need to replace them yet! He could have easily just replaced my brakes like I originally requested, but actually took steps to tell me I didn't need to give him more money for unneeded work. Honesty like that is hard to come by. My bill in the end was $550. Van also stayed late on a Friday (before Chinese/Vietnamese New Years, to top it.) to make sure I could get my car back that day. All in all, I was thoroughly impressed. I'll definitely be going back the next time I have car trouble. read more

I have to agree with all of the prior yelpers. This place is unusually honest. I took a car to them that is probably totalled. Radiator fluid drained, car overheated, head gasket likely blown. That sort of thing. Other repair shops would have advised me to fix it because car repair shops make their money fixing cars. Don told me to hold off and attempt to get a year or two out of the car without putting any money into it. They don't stand to benefit directly from that advice but have, of course, earned yet another loyal customer for years to come. Don graciously worked me into their queue promptly, engineered a quick fix to get me on my way, and followed up within a couple of hours with a detailed work estimate by email. When I returned--this time, with an appointment!--they got my work done under estimate and almost a day ahead of schedule, with some advice on something to watch and full documentation of what was done. Don is thoughtful, knowledgeable, and easy to talk with. The technician that I met on my first visit was personable and friendly. Their work bays are clean and well-organized. Usually I feel weak and deflated after a trip to the mechanic but with Auto Tec I know I got more than what I paid for. I left knowing more about my car and how to take care of it. I do not usually give five stars for anything but exceptional service providers or restaurants, but I believe this auto repair shop deserves it. I previously went to a BMW shop which I would rather not name but when I started feeling like I was being shortchanged, and taken advantage of I brought my X5 over to Auto Tec. They were very friendly and straightforward. They didn't over charge me, explained what needed to be fixed, and what I could hold off on which happened to be the brakes. A year later, my brakes are finally going to be replaced by Auto Tec, and for a great price. Came here for an oil change for my 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid. Everything went smoothly. The mechanics also did some additional checks for tire pressure, wiper blades, and fluid levels. They also have a nice lobby area where you can wait. ~$70 for an oil change for my hybrid. Pretty average pricing I've seen for hybrids since they require 0-20w synthetic oil. read more

I started taking my car to Auto-Tec when I had my '87 Accord. The work was always done on time, under estimate. Tony always told me the facts. Over the years, I've become good friends with Ann. I was never talked down to because I'm a woman. This is BIG! My '95 Accord had all its work done here. When it came time to sell it, I told Tony and he told one of his customers about it. I sold it in 4 days without advertising it to anyone. The buyers happily paid my asking price because Auto-Tec had done all the work on it. I've told all my friends about Auto-Tec; they love it too. I now have a '05 Accord. I ONLY take it to Auto-Tec! UPDATE ON 6-24-12: Auto-Tec has my loyalty forever! They did anyway, but here's what happened. My car made a weird sound and a bad smell on 17 just outside of Santa Cruz, where I live. Then it lost all power. I got towed by AAA, willing to pay the extra $170 to be towed to Campbell, so Auto-Tec could look at it. Good call. Toan told me my spark plug had shot out of the cylinder, breaking the ignition coil, the pieces hitting the exhaust manifold, blowing a couple fuses and draining the battery completely. Weird, huh? He fixed what he could and gave me the parts; then told me how to approach the Honda dealership to get Honda to pay for the repair. If Toan hadn't coached me, I might've backed off when the service manager gave me his normal routine. But I persisted, told them that the car was defective, I could've been killed, and I had ALL my maintenance records since buying the car. I'd maintained it (due to Auto Tec) meticulously! So guess what, Honda is replacing the cylinder. And approval of it took only one day vs. the two to three weeks the service manager at Honda had originally said. After I said what Toan told me to, Honda became VERY nice and apologetic, instead of stonewalling me. And did what was right. Yay for the little guy! read more

These guys are all about customer service. I had a tow hook on my SUV secured with two bolts that were impossible for me to budge. After 45 minutes of fruitless efforts to loosen the bolts, I finally broke my ratchet. In desperation, I found Auto Tec on yelp and called to see if they could help. They helped me as soon as I drove up and removed both bolts in under 30 seconds. No charge. Free. That's right. Moreover, they were just plain friendly guys. I just picked up my car from here this morning. They were the friendliest mechanics I have ever experienced. They didn't over charge me, explained what was (and wasn't) wrong with my car and were finally able to change my blinker. This might not seem like a big deal, but all the places I tried to stop in to ask, refused to do so since it was more time than it was worth - since it involves a special tool and needing to lift the car up. He told me the car would be ready at 3 and early in the afternoon and called to tell me it would be ready at 4. No problem.....it was very nice of him to call. When I came to pick up the car it was all ready to go. He even told me a way for me to save money on repairs in the future by buying my own parts! First, thanks to everyone who gave such great reviews to Auto Tec; you were absolutely right! I have an '05 Infiniti G35 sedan and the breaks were horrid (like a crowd of fingernails on a chalkboard). I called Auto Tec and spoke with Van (quality human!). He worked with me through my numerous questions and requests for quotes. His timing and budget were spot on and the quality of his work is exceptional; my brakes are better than when I bought my car new. I found Don and Auto Tec through Yelp and I feel very grateful for that. Don is honest, caring, and competent, a rare combination of traits. One morning my Mercury Villager's engine started running very rough and CEL came on. I noticed that some rodent had started nesting in the engine compartment and had chewed at some cables. I called Don and emailed him a picture of the cables. He advised buying online a new set of ignition cables and how to install them myself. That fixed the problem! My husband and I just moved to California from Washington, so when the check engine light came on in our Volvo, I went straight to Yelp for a mechanic. Auto Tec had a great score, a few reviews mentioned good prices and it was five minutes from our house, so we gave them a call. They scheduled an appointment for the next day. By the time we went in the next morning, the check engine light had already gone off, but we wanted to do an oil change anyway. They were able to get me in only an hour or so later! The waiting room was quiet and comfortable and their dog, Chopper, is adorable. While I waited, one of the mechanics came out and said the car also needed an air filter. Five minutes later they had the cost of the part for me. I waited an hour and half but that's only because it took the parts place an hour to get the filter to them. *^_^ When I finished, they commented on my Washington license plates and I explained I hadn't changed them yet because I didn't have the right tool, but I had the new plates in the back seat. Immediately, someone was out at my car, taking off the old plates and replacing them. I would recommend this place to anyone who needs auto work done. Quick, friendly, good prices, and accommodating. Why didn't I find this place sooner?! A good friend of mine has been going to this place for a long time. I asked for a recommendation last week from my friend and she gave me Don's name and number. I was absolutely blown away by not only how much this guy knows, but how much he cares. He goes way deeper than surface level and takes so much time to be human, not just an auto mechanic. His staff is top notch. His shop is clean, clean, clean. His prices are 30% cheaper than I've been paying. There was something my car needed, but he didn't provide - and he got me in with the guy next door immediately, so I wouldn't have to come back. I'm going to shout it from the rooftops that I drove 45 minutes to see the guys at Auto Tec and I wouldn't hesitate a moment to do it again. They are the right guys. Finding a new mechanic is tricky, especially when you have an older model car. I have be bringing my 2006 Honda Odyssey to Auto Tech for the past several years. They were by far the best price to replace my timing belt but beyond price - I have complete faith in the quality of their work. They are a neighborhood mechanic shop that watches out for its customers. Hands down would recommend them over any mechanic in the South Bay (including dealers, but that is a whole story in itself.
