Service: 10/10 My primary contact was Mike, however I spoke with many other staff in person and over the phone over the course of a week after I had my Crosstrek towed in with a destroyed transmission system. Everyone was courteous, helpful, and responsive. The new transmission they procured was practically brand new and installed professionally. The experience they provided me as a customer was as excellent as the final bill and they are now my go-to shop for transmission and suspension work. Thus, I strongly recommend this business. When I had my car towed in, it was after hours, but conveniently they had an overnight key/car drop off system that was secure and easy. The lobby was clean, organized, and offered free cold water.

Had my vehicle being serviced at local mechanic and they notified me that the PTU (Power Transfer…read moreUnit) that is part of transmission on all-wheel drive vehicles was leaking badly and needed to be replaced. They did not work on transmissions and advised me to take it to a transmission repair shop. Called the Ford dealership and they told me to replace it would run around $3300. For comparison I called some transmission shops and got ahold of County Transmissions and spoke with Hampton. He told me that it would run $2300 including labor if it needed to be replaced. They had good reviews so I decided to take it to them and save the $1000. Took it there on a Monday and Hampton told me they would have it done in several days. By Friday had not heard from anyone so I called them and was told that it was next in line to be looked at which would be the following Monday. My vehicle had been there five days and had not been looked at. On the following Monday, Hampton called me and said that it did need to be replaced and to replace it would run $3200. This was $1000 more than $2300 as he had initially told me and about the same as what the dealership would charge. Mentioned this to him and he said that the $2300 was for a used PTU that they would get from a salvaged vehicle, and a new one was $3200. He had not told me this when I first called and I had of course assumed the initial quote of $2300 was for a new one. Didn't even know they would consider putting a used one a vehicle because how would you know it didn't have issues. In light of this new information and for the fact I feel it was a bait-and-switch, I decided to take my vehicle to the Ford dealership and have them do the repair. The dealership's warranty on the PTU was much better and I know am getting a genuine Ford part. With an independent shop am probably getting a cheap aftermarket part. If I moved to another city or say was traveling and had an issue with it, I could take my vehicle to any Ford dealership and they would honor the warranty. If County Transmissions had done the work, then I was out of luck. Had to take an Uber back to County Transmissions and pick-up my vehicle and then take it to the Ford dealership. This costs another $50 on top of the $50 Uber charge had already incurred when I took my vehicle there and had to take an Uber to get back home as I live far from them. I opened up my SmartTag GPS tracking app as had placed an Android SmartTag GPS tracking device inside the vehicle awhile back. Was very surprised to see my vehicle had been driven around Vienna and appeared they were using it to run errands as it was stopping at various locations. So in the end I was out $100 in Uber fees, they had my vehicle for a week and nothing was done after Hampton telling me they would get to it in several days, plus they apparently used it to run errands. I would certainly not recommend this company in light of everything that happened. Note: Saw that Hampton had posted a rebuttal on my initial review where he states that the initial quote was an estimate to repair the PTU, but this is not true. The PTU is something that is replaced, not repaired, and he gave me a quote of $2300 to REPLACE the PTU. Plus they didn't need to be driving it around to determine where the leak was coming from since it was obviously leaking when I took it in and it had to be replaced. When I called him on Friday he said they hadn't looked at it yet; however they had been driving it around before that Friday. He mentions that they have a shuttle service and I asked about this but was told it didn't go to where I live.

I had an SUV that was rough shifting into gear, would get stuck at 3rd gear, and was displaying…read morecheck engine, traction control, and 4Lo lights. Resetting these codes (solenoid power and pressure related) with a BlueDriver ODB2 scanner would give relief for about 4-5 miles. They took care of me, were less than a dealer, and spent time discussing the issues and remedies. Eventually I will get a new transmission, which they priced less than the dealer would sell to me and even less than a used junkyard or overhauled transmission. However, I have some personal stuff to manage and we agreed to button it back up with Toyota parts/fluids (thanks for passing along the discount!). It's operating much better than it was, shifts smoothly, and the codes haven't returned. From the TMI department (Yelp wants more detail!) I called and they were a little busy, so we scheduled my drop-off later in the week. F* was great in getting me in, clear about the troubleshooting estimate, what they might have to do based upon the issues mentioned but they needed to diagnose it first, and the turnaround time. I was in no rush. Ma* and I had a few calls to discuss the SUV, the problem codes, and testing as well as remedies based upon the codes. He's really nice and very knowledgeable. He even knew about two important Toyota Service Bulletins that 4 out of 5 people at the dealer didn't know about. The 5th person was a service manager and a tech at the dealer I go to and knew how to pull them up and reviewed them with me. It had been 50k miles since the last transmission service, which the previous owner had done before selling the car. The fast lube place used a grip additive, which Toyota doesn't recommend. Best thing to do is drop the pan, check the solenoids and harness for function and resistance, and look at the fluid. I agreed. All checked out OK on the solenoids and harness. The oil color was normal but did have some odd sludge, where possibly the grip additive that a fast lube place used. Toyota does not recommend transmission fluid additives. This may have affected the flow of the transmission fluid as there were some metal particles in the transmission fluid, indicating that I would need a new transmission soon. He gave me a good price on the parts and labor and a new transmission price from the dealer cheaper than a rebuild or used transmission or what I could get it for from the dealer myself. At the present time I have some stuff going on and can't put in a new transmission. We discussed buttoning up the transmission, replacing the fluid, and using a Toyota filter and gasket as well as waiting a few months to replace the transmission. I know it might have problems or fail at sometime in the future. He said he would put it back together and do me right. He used Toyota branded parts and fluids, did it right plus got a price on a Toyota gasket and filter that was much less than the normal dealer price if I had taken it in for dealer service. After buttoning it up and resetting the codes they haven't came back and the transmission is shifting smoothly again! I will have to replace it in the future but appreciate what he was able to do to get me functional for now.

After taking my car, with no clue what it could be, my transmission issues were repaired quickly, with very up front pricing and clear explanation of what the issue appeared to be, and the next steps if the first attempt to repair were unsuccessful. I now have a mechanic I will count on for any repair issues my Tahoe may need. A good mechanic in a new area could be hard to find. I highly recommend this shop.

Always had the excuse "oh well ugghhh, I don't know what to tell you." He never once specified why it was taking him so long. A few years ago my husbands car began acting up and 2 different local repair shops told us he would…read moreneed a new transmission. One of them admitted that transmissions were not their specialty and suggested we drive out to Balch's Transmission before proceeding. After a quick test drive, Tom, the owner said all that was needed was a new transmission filter. The thought of "dropping the pan" and changing the fluid/filter on a car that was barely driveable was a bit daunting, but since trying it would cost only $100 rather than the 3k a rebuilt transmission would cost, we decided to give it a try. He suggested we take it back to our local repair place as he wouldn't be able to get to it for quite some time. So, we did, and low and behold, it completely fixed the problem. A few years later, we are experiencing the same problems, but this time the car is stranded in Williamsburg the day before the blizzard. Tom took time to talk to us and will soon be talking to the repair facility in Williamsburg to see if it really does need a new transmission or if it is just the fluid again (as that place is only a general repair facility rather than a transmission shop). As of yet, we have no idea what the future of our car is, but I greatly appreciate his time and honesty in all of our encounters. His shop is a bit of a drive for us, but after these experiences, he will be our first stop for any transmission issues. Thank you!
