He then delivered the car to me, probably spending 8 hours on the road from Anderson to the Bay Area and back to his shop. That's a level of service unheard of these days. There is no sign on the shop, and it's a mom-and-pop operation with very low overhead. He takes phone messages and texts, but don't get worried if he doesn't respond for a while, he stays focused when doing mechanical work and doesn't look at the phone. We figured that if we ever needed major auto repairs again, it would be cheaper to stay in Anderson for a week and have Mike do it, than have it done at home.

Needless to say, I had our diesel BMW X5 checked before leaving the Bay Area. When we got to Redding, CA, the dreaded check engine light (CEL) came on. So, we were frantic not knowing what was wrong with our car. Also, we had no idea what shop to go to. Can we find somebody knowledgeable and with the right equipment to work on a diesel X5? Can we find somebody honest enough who'll tell us exactly what's wrong and not charge us an arm and a leg? The universe must have been on our side because we found Steven, the manager (or owner) of Angelo's Classic Import. With Steven, all our fears were gone. They have a very updated shop with all the equipment needed to diagnose our car's problems. We found a very honest person in Steven who charged us honestly. (Turned out the issue was minor and he charged us only $20!) How I wish his shop is in the Bay Area because I would drive the whole length of the Bay Area just to have the privilege of me becoming his client for life! Told them I would not be doing that and when I got my car back there was no cap on my coolant reservoir. Luckily I caught it quickly and went and immediately bought another one. Had them reimburse me for the cap but it was a shitty aftermarket cap and the functional original cap I've had to do without. Not to mention having to once again buy coolant. My engine block would have been toast had I not caught it as quick as I did. Could have been an honest mistake but also would have guaranteed I needed a new engine. Had never had an issue before but won't risk going back. Changed the head gasket myself for $800 after buying tools and parts.

The alternator on my truck suddenly died and just like that, what was promising to be a fun trip, turned into a nightmare. More than just needing work, the alternator on this one is mounted on the bottom, behind the engine, right over the exhaust. While I do pretty much anything myself, I was on the road, far from home, and this job required big tools. If you are in such a situation, reading my review, you know the feeling. Trapped. Unlike my home auto repair market L.A. that is very saturated with such businesses, here in Redding, it seemed there is almost no where to go. And everyone was asking... let's just say an amount that would make an entire LaBrea (LA) come out of their shops and say "WTH? We can charge that?". But I kept searching. And I have found Steve. May I say "Fair Price"? Now, I know, I know. I thought so too. But, I had a pleasure of chatting with some of the local shops before I found Steve, (spent an entire previous day), so, I already knew better. Steve's shop looks like a normal auto shop is supposed to look, if you know what I mean. I liked that. I always want that. And was at the shop, met me personally, looked at everything, made some tests to be certain, and took the job. He showed me exactly which brand of the alternator he is going to install, and that was the one I would have chosen myself. And he kept his word and charged me exactly by the quote. No tricks whatsoever (trust me, I know them all, been around auto repair for a long time). He has two good mechanics there and the job was done perfectly. I like small details, and I always want the repair done right, I demand that from myself and from others. I looked over my truck after the repair, and I found myself to be completely satisfied. Nothing was forgotten, nothing broken, nothing put back the wrong way. Like a factory. Now, to me the price and quality matters, of course, I am just like everyone else. But, I tell you even more important is the quality of the man and his word. I always try to find the shop that is owned by the man who will stand behind his reputation. Steve is the man. If you have found yourself needing honest and qualified mechanical assistance, - my good advice to you is go see Steve. I saw this body shop had high stars on Yelp so I called to ask if they would perform the work. Their immediate response was "no" and "we don't do that kind of work and only install OEM components." I kindly asked " do you recommend anyone else that will do this work for me?". Immediate "nope, you'll just have to call around" They were about as helpful as a broken fence post and could care less in my opinion. My next phone call was to Underhood Automotive. Immediately helpful and professional. Chris said they do this kind of work all the time and install DOT legal headlights on older Shasta County Search and Rescue vehicles. Every single question I asked was answered. I live 4 hours away from Redding so coordinating this was somewhat of a Challenge. Chris even told me my mom's car had loud squeeking brakes and he would inspect those as well. Strong Automotive has high stars so I'm guessing their body work is pretty good but customer service is also very important and in this department, they have a long way to go.

When I picked up my car after hours, the lockbox where my key was stored was left unlocked, and my car was also unlocked.
