But they will also replace your original rare brown German 40 hp distributor with a cheapy modern one and then try to keep it hoping you don't know any better. Not a theory. They did it to me. First guy I spoke to couldn't have sounded less interested in me bringing my Westfalia down. I started the conversation out with, "heard you guys were the best in the Southbay!!" and he couldn't have sounded any less flattered. I heard him somewhat scoff in the background when this gentlemen passed me off to the owner. When I spoke to the owner "Randy" he thought I was someone he may have known and sounded like was willing to help. When I told him I heard of him from Yelp he quickly interjected, "sorry we are 2 months out." No offense Randy, but two F****** months out? How in the Hell are you in business with this kind of service and attitude. Frankly you offer NO SERVICE!!!! Will sell the bus as it is or just keep driving it with a F***** up clutch. I've been taking my 87 Vanagon to Randy and Robert at Auto-Meister for over a decade. They've always done a great job at a fair price. They know what they're doing which is rare in Waterboxer world! They've got my Van running great. I was going to buy some new control arm bushings and Randy said my old ones were probably fine and that a little silicone will stop the squeak... Of course the squeak was gone when I picked up my Van. They just did it... no mention to me or on my bill. Bottom line; if you drive a Vanagon and are having issues, these guys can help. read more

They are a small shop so you must be patient with the repairs, line up an appointment early, you must be okay that repairs done properly may take time. These vans are old classics and often take time to source out proper parts. Also be prepared to pay in cash or check, no credit cards accepted. Randy restored my van and it runs like a champ, new transmission, clutch, shifter, these are major repairs and you want them done correctly the 1st time. It is difficult to find a place that knows a lot about VWs. Sure you could take your vintage Volkswagen to a regular repair shop but they don't have the knowledge these guys have and they don't have the parts to fix the car at hand. I highly recommend these guys..they are fair, nice and do a great job. There was one time we came in because the windsheild wiper wasn't working...now a lot of mechanics would use this as an opportunity to get some cash out of you...but the guy tightened it up - said it happened a lot and sent us on our way without charging. My only complaint (which goes for a lot of auto repair places) is the hours aren't really convienent for someone with an 8-5 type of job, but that isn't that different from most mechanics so i still give them 5 stars. read more

Had a lot of VW's over the years and the Auto Meister is a throw back the those little shops that really do it right! Sorry to hear a review claiming a rare part was plucked or comments laced with F-bombs because they could not get an appointment right away. This is a two stall shop with customer cars wedged from the boulevard to back alley. It is a big town and they have no shortage of customers. Randy's supreme mission is to do a quality repair for a fair price, he is not eager to overbook. I bought a '71 Westy in November 2019 and had to wait until January before he could make room, this is not my daily driver so two months was not a big F*cking deal to me. Randy honored the January appointment, did a complete and thorough job going through my bus, it's running great! Since then I have driven 4,000 trouble free miles just running around town. Randy did a tune-up last week, planning to visit my daughter in Santa Barbara next week and will drive with confidence. Delighted to have a local shop where the same hands have been wrenching VW's for over fifty years. Randy deserves full praise for his expertise and for running a quality shop held in very high esteem serving the South Bay community for over fifty years. read more

A few weeks ago, I made arrangements to bring in my type 3 Ghia for some R&R. This early type 3 has a unique carburetor that has been nothing but problems for me. It was clear from my first visit that these guys know what they were doing. They kept be up-do-date on what they were doing and when I got the car back, it ran great. The prices were super reasonable. It has now been a few weeks and the car continues to start and idle with no problem. I highly recommend this shop. read more

Had them replace my coolant pipes on my 88 Vanagon and they charged a great price, were very honest, patient, and a pleasure to work with. Can't find this level of experience and knowledge at these prices anywhere in LA for our old quirky VW's. Would happily go to them for everything, only wish I lived closer. read more
