I am so excited and grateful for the service I got from Paul and Laura at Auto Know How. I have a 2000 VW beetle that was sounding like an old clunker truck. I took it to two (!) different VW dealers to get it fixed. They did some work on it, charged me a high price but never fixed the problem causing the "clickety clack". BUT not Auto Know How. It's rare that you find a garage that will tell you not only what's wrong with the car, but what it will take to make it perfect -- or what you can get away with for right now. I know I'm gonna make some waves with this review so here it goes. For people that don't know how automotive shops work this place is a God send. For those of us that have worked in shops and in the automotive industry this place is not exactly upfront and a little strange in how they give you pricing on repairs. Here's why. Lets say I need a water pump on my car. Automotive repair books give the exact number of hours per job and a shop should never charge more than what the catalog calls for in terms of hours (unless something more is wrong and additiona; repairs are needed obviously). The other component of an estimate comes from the parts needed. Parts are easy part ,the shop calls their supplier and gets the price, no suprises. And bingo there is your estimate and ultimately what you will pay and there are no suprises at the register. Sounds pretty simple, thats because it is. Auto know how on the other hand does their pricing their own way, the only place I have ever seen do it like this and they get rave reviews for it because most people don't know any better. What they do is give an extremly high estimate first, in my case it was 1900 dollars, then they tell you they always "gives estimates on the high side to be safe". So you plan on paying the price given just like you would at any other shop, 1900 dollars. Then when you get their to pay in 1200. You think wow this place is awesome and saved me 700 dollars!! To bad that is not the case. They give higher than your average shops estimates then charge you normal price for everything and you think you got a deal when you didn't. Then unknowingly you give them an awesome review on yelp and because you think they are honest and gave you the best price possible and saved you some cash. They are playing all of their customers, and I felt like I needed to set the record straight. All that being said it is not a bad shop, just average, average prices, average service. Most of the reviews I've read for this place praise them for doing their job correctly and not having to come back to get the same thing fixed....Thats not exactly excellent, its more like par. We as consumers expect so little from mechanics now that when they finally do their job we get excited. UGH. ok bring on the hate mail...hahahaha read more

I only give them a 2 star because they're nice people. However! I was quoted over $600 to install new break pads and turn rotors and replace calipers. I took my car to another guy who said my calipers were fine and so were rotors! I was sad to find out these nice guys were also trying to hustle me like all other shops. I was told calipers themselves cost $500 when I went to autozone and they cost $30! Moral of my story is buy your own parts and find a craigslist guy to do them. Shops increase parts cost by 200% at least and always tell you more needs fixing than the truth. I took mine to craigslist dude and got it all done for $70! read more

They were as straight forward about the needed repairs I was looking to get done. I called this place based on the reviews online. Needed to replace tranny solenoids on my Volvo. Spoke to Paul (owner) and he quoted me $350 but to get it properly diagnosed by a tranny specialist. After getting it offically diagnosed with a specialsit, I showed up in person, with my toddler daughter. He approached me reading his mail, never making any eye contact. Very cocky and rude demeanor. I stuck out my hand and introduced myself, and told this idiot that I have received an official diagnosis. He then flew off the handle and said "take it to a tranny specialist". What a waste of time!!!! Advice for you idiot: if you dont know anything about trannys, dont give quotes for the work! I will never shop at this place again and hopefully any new prospects would consider this review before calling. He's rude and wont admit that he knows NOTHING about transmissions!!!! read more

We were traveling to Denver to participate in the Cherry Creek art festival. Our van got the mysterious check engine light about 2 hours outside the city limits. I do all the normal stuff, pull over immediately, check the fluids, add a little oil, etc.. No changes, so we baby it into the city, check into the hotel early (thanks guys.. big help!!!!), and log onto Yelp to look for a place to go to fix the van. Paul, Laura, and Rugby are fantastic. He took time out from his lunch to run diagnostics. Turns out the car computer was flaky. After determining that nothing else was wrong with the van,we tried to reset it to clear the error message, but we couldn't do it. We couldn't order the part, long story there, but we were only charged a minimal fee for his time. He is exceedingly knowledgeable and explained everything in clear, concise detail. Long story short, he put us at ease enough to drive the van back to Austin without too much worry. If I lived in Denver, this would be my autoshop. It's damn hard to find a good mechanic, I'm so jealous of y'all!! read more

I had to drive across the country while moving. With me I had my sister, young niece and dog. Part way, I started hearing a clanking noise and saw that my heat shield had come loose under the car. Also, the guard under the front bumper was hanging low on one side (which a Honda Dealership told me couldn't be fixed without great expense). I yelped an auto mechanic and found Auto Know How. I called and asked if they could see us on short notice. They told us to come on in. The woman was very nice and talked with us all about her dogs she's rescued, while the man ( I apologize I've forgotten names) looked over the car. 10 minutes later he came back with both items fixed and sent us on our way. I'm not saying that this is something everyone should expect, as they certainty need to make a living. However, it shows a lot of kindness to do this for strangers who they knew they'd most likely never see again. The fix held til I reached my destination- 3 states away- and is still holding. These are good people and I would be a life time customer if I lived near by. read more

Slightly harder to find, but extremely worth the trip. Fixed my car cheaper than quoted, and fixed another hidden problem I didn't know I had. Total opposite of the "dealer" shop experience. These guys are the real thing, nice, honest, fast, helpful, and without any bullcrap upselling. They are very far away from my home, but I'll happily pay to have my car towed there, because they've earned my trust. Do call ahead if you can, you'll need an appointment, as it's no secret these sweet people are the best in Denver. Bit of a note, if you do have to leave your car there bring a friend with another vehicle, or plan on a bit of a hike as the 10th & Osage Station rail station is a bit of a walk through some isolated industrial bits of town. Paul is a great guy. His wife is just as nice. Talk about a mom and pop shop. I wish all businesses were this easy to work with. If I had one thing to nitpick, it'd be the lack of online email appointments but thats like complaining that the 72 degree weather isnt 73 degrees. read more

My family and several friends and acquaintances are long term customers of Auto Know How. Any time we have a car related problem Paul is our first and usually last stop. I trust Paul and Laura to offer their best advice and have never been disappointed in either their work or problem diagnosis. About three months ago we took our 2010 Nissan Murano in for an oil change and general check. Paul let me know when I picked up the car that he noticed a small leak in the transfer case. He advised me that the car was still under warranty and should be taken to the dealer ASAP. He said he would not be able to repair the leak because Nissan would not pay him for the work. I have had this experience before with Paul and each time he has been correct and obviously highly ethical. I took the car to Empire Nissan in Lakewood where they verified the leak and four days later released the car saying it was repaired. They allegedly had removed and resealed the case. Big job, so they said. We got it home and found a puddle of fluid under the car. Back to the dealer. Two days later they said there was a hairline crack in the case and they had to replace it altogether. Nine days later and lots of mistakes they finally repaired the leak with new parts. If Paul had done it I suspect I would have had the car in 48 hours and the job would have been performed correctly. On the rare occasion we have had a problem with one of Paul's repairs we have returned it and he took care of whatever went wrong immediately without additional charges unless the problem had changed. Can't say enough about Paul and the woman who manages him (Laura). They run a first class business. read more
