I went to Auto Interiors & Tops, Inc., with an unorthodox request: they they make me some 10' x 10' black canvas backdrops with 25 metal grommets across the top like the ones I use in the part of my book publishing job where I'm a traveling bookseller at academic conferences and trade shows. Nothing to do with auto interiors. Or tops. And yet they were able to accommodate my special needs, and I am grateful for it. The place is located in downtown Raleigh, near Natty Greene's and Napper Tandy's, etc., and is essentially a big garage where they do precisely what the aptly named business suggests: they reupholster car interiors and tops. Go figure. I brought in one of my existing canvas backdrops and worked first with Tim, and later with Travis---both of whom are just as pleasant as can be---to recreate the blasted things, and both were eager to help me with my bizarre demands. The Sunbrella fabric they used is stiffer than the fabric the boating company that made our original backdrops, and the black color is rich and dark and a near-perfect match to the originals. I haven't tried the new ones out at an exhibit, but I think I won't be able to mix them with the old ones, because they'll look different side-by-side. However, when paired just by themselves, I think they'll look great, although perhaps they won't drape quite as nicely as the old ones. They are tough and well made, though, so I know I'll get years of use out of them. Initially, they ordered only enough fabric to make the backdrops 7' long, but it's imperative to have them 8', so they had to order more as a not insignificant cost. However, the company did call me before they did so to let me know that there would be an additional charge, at which point I ordered a third backdrop, because one of the old ones became a casualty of BookExpo America: separated from the other boxes in our return shipment and I imagine abandoned forever in a dusty, lonely UPS warehouse somewhere (moment of silence). (Be honest: my job description is boring the shite out of you right now, isn't it? Hey, but you know, I get to travel to some kickass places for it. Toronto and New Orleans this fall, Los Angeles in January [suck it, cold weather!], New York City in February [yeeeeeah, I'mma freeze my bohonkus off] and Honolulu in March [I'll be conducting business from the beach, TYVM: Mai Tais for life!].) But I digress. In sum, I am beyond pleased with the customer service I received from Auto Interiors & Tops and I appreciate their willingness to help an exhibits manager out. (Don't lie: you yawned when I mentioned my job title, didn't you? You are just, like, so bored right now.) The receptionists are friendly and helpful and the guys doing the upholstering are great about giving you updates and super-quick to return your calls. I also want to mention here that they finished all three backdrops almost an entire month before I said I needed them (!). They also were kind enough to UPS them to me, since it would've been a bit of an inconvenience for me to trek out there during work. I'll have to post a follow up when I actually put them the backdrops to use this fall, but I'm confident that they'll be just swell. read more

Repairing a BMW can be outrageous and very expensive. A friend told me about this company and I could not be any more pleased! My convertible was not working. It would not go up or down. Let's take a look.. 1 customer service. The entire team was friendly and wanted to make sure that I was satisfied. They could not have done anything more to make me happy. 2 the job was done on time and the car was ready as expected. 3. Price. BMW is often referred to as BRING MY WALLET. Not so much. Our family gifted my granddaughter a1998 Toyota Camry. It's in good shape, but during a rainy stretch, quite a bit of water leaked in. The car has a moonroof, so I knew the drains are liable to be blocked. But when I tried to open it, it backed up a couple of inches and jammed. Made an appointment with AI&T, then brought the car in. The very first thing I noticed is the shop is clean and very organized, impressively so. A couple of days later, they called back and explained what they found and gave me a price. Plastic parts in the transport mechanism had become brittle due to age, and broke into pieces which jammed it. They straightened everything out, including the interior slider that covers the moonroof. Because of their knowledge of so many cars, they replaced it with one from a newer model that fits perfectly. I've been using auto top and interiors for years since I was introduced to them by Leith Maserati dealership when I was delivering cars there to be worked on. I started out easy putting rain guards on our Tahoe and truck then gave them my 2014 Mustang to take all the cloth seat stuff out cover it with the matching brown leather from the door and add heated seats, which they did to perfection just recently I purchased a 2002 Toyota Solara that needed a new top so I took my car in to have them do that they had it completed in a couple of days and it looks sensational. They are your go to place for any work. You need for seats or interiors on cars boats I would even say jet, skis, and motorcycles. They are definitely craftsman. read more

Auto Interiors and Tops did a great job on my 2001 Chevrolet Corvette. I replaced the black top on my black car and it looks really great. The estimate was reasonable and the final cost came right back on the money - no additional hidden fees. I dropped my car off on Saturday afternoon and got the call the following Tuesday afternoon that my car was ready to be picked up. They were backed up approximately 2-3 weeks before they could take my car but that delay was quite a bit shorter than several other places I look into. Overall, I am very pleased with the product and service that I received and would surely recommend them to others. BTW, they also work heavily in boat upholstery as I saw several boats in the bay while I was waiting to check out on my car. read more

I have used Tommy and Auto Interiors and Tops in the past when they were in downtown Raleigh and their work was fantastic and they always did, and you paid for exactly what you agreed to upfront. However, Zack contracted with me for patching two 1" tears in a convertible top (solid temporary repair) $280 and had his worker state at the time he's done many of these tops over the years. When I picked it up today, I was charged $284.21, paid the full amount, but found they simply caulked the tears with $4 tube of silicon. with silicon. NO patch at all. He stated their worker couldn't access the back of the fabric, but I had to pay for the time he used discovering he couldn't access it. Very unhappy customer. I don't fault them for not fixing it as contracted, but charging me the same for NOT fixing it seems shady at best. read more

If I could I would give Auto Interiors and Tops a 6 out of 5. They went above and beyond to repair my hardtop retractile roof on my BMW 4028i. Jack Groden coordinated my repair and Matthew did the work. While retracting my roof one of the levers snapped. When I tried to close one side worked and the other failed. I went to Auto Interiors and they looked at it for a while and determined we need to replace the whole roof chassis. They ordered the part from BMW in Germany and it did not come with any instructions or diagrams. They worked with their network to get pictures and figure out how to install it. It took a long time to adjust it, make sure it did not leak. In the end it works and my dream car is back to working. They certainly could have charged more but they were cost conscious and communicated with me very well on decisions. Thanks guys for doing a terrific job! read more

So I have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 and my sunroof was leaking ended up needing a new sunroof because the hardware on mine was broken. I was able to find one from a junkyard for a decent price with the approval of the shop. Had my car done within a week and back on the road amazing quality and went above and beyond as far as making sure everything was put back properly and everything was secured. For example clamps lines that didn't have clamps before so that way in the future, they didn't come undone, Would 100% recommend anyone with any job to get them a shot! read more

I would love to review Auto Interiors & Tops, but I still don't even have an estimate. I need fabric replaced but I also need some aftermarket parts. Since my car is 14 years old, I understand finding the parts is tricky. I brought the car in, discussed what I needed, and looked at fabric. I was told I'd get a call back after the tech had some time to look for the parts. Two weeks later, I called since I hadn't received a call back. The person I originally talked to wasn't there so I was told he would be given a message and would call me back. Another week after that, I called again. The person I originally talked to answered. I think he said he was in the shop and that he'd call me back later when he could get to his desk. We talked about getting the estimate for only the upholstery work to start. That was two days ago. So....today I called another place and got a general estimate for the upholstery work right over the phone, so at least I have an idea of what the cost will be. When I go to this establishment to look at fabric samples, we'll discuss the parts. I have a feeling I may need to source them myself and if I'm lucky enough to find what I need, I'll ask my extremely capable husband, dad, and brother to help me out. read more

Went to Auto to see if they could help me out with a convertible top that the shop we normally go to dropped the ball. Travis was great to work with, and fixed my problem for a very reasonable price. He mentioned a few other items that needed adjustment and that the top has maybe 2 year left before replacement. Definitely will take it back to them to replace. My car was parked at the beach for two days while a hurricane passed over it-not much wind but incredible amounts of rain. On the way home I could hear water sloshing around within the cavities within the body panels. The drains from the sunroof had clogged and rainwater had filled the voids in the floor system. Auto Interiors removed the entire interior from my car, removed the water and treated the interior materials including the leather seats and very dense carpet with a solution to prevent possible future mold and fungus issues. They then reinstalled everything, and it was impossible to tell anything had ever happened. It looked so much better than I hoped it would, I'm a believer! read more

My headliner started to come undone on my VW, so I took it to Auto Interiors. They booked me a couple weeks out, because they have been very busy this summer (2015). I dropped my car off on a Wednesday at 8am. I was told the service should take only one day. So, I went to pick it up Wednesday evening at 5pm and I paid for the service. Unfortunately, my car actually wasn't ready and I had to return on Thursday to pick it up. This wasn't a big deal for me, but they should have known that before I paid. I wish they had called me to let me know that it wouldn't be ready till mid-morning on Thursday. They were very apologetic and offered me a loaner car and a ride. When I picked it up on Thursday, my luggage cover (i.e. the piece that covers the trunk area behind my back seats) was not in my car. After walking around the shop with an employee, we found it and everything was good. Overall, my headliner is back to like-new condition. This is a local business and everyone was very kind and professional. Despite the couple of issues I encountered, I'd still go back. read more

I brought my Ford Mustang Convertible here a few weeks ago due to the top leaking. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They all wore a mask as well which showed they had our safety in mind. They were able to fix the leaking problem without having to completely replace parts (which is what the Ford dealership wanted to do, would have cost me $2,000+). I just picked up my bimini from these guys, and was horrified at the crappy work they did. First indication, i brought the bimini (a large canvas sunshade for a boat--a $2-3,000 piece) in nicely rolled up, but found it lying crumpled and twisted on top of a pile of other stuff when i came to pick it up. Next, we take it over to a table to look at it, and the new zipper they've installed is 3 inches too long and hanging out the side of the bimini. The sales guy calls one of the senior people over, they shake their heads, say "unbelievable" and proceed to fix it. They also notice that the workman did not remove the old zipper, so cut it out after the fact. Then we look at the wear patches they've replaced (this is where the boom of the sailboat rubs across). It had leather pieces there that had become worn and weathered. They replaced them with some sort of vinyl that had a cheap look to it. I could live with that (we had discussed not going back with leather), but it looked like it was sewn on by an 8 year old. The pieces weren't trimmed up, the stitching wavered back and forth from 1/8" from the edge to 1/2 inch from the edge, and the guy hadn't bothered to get the cloth underneath straight before he sewed, so the whole thing was bunched up and wouldn't lie flat. The senior guy, after fixing the zipper, looked impassively at the mess his guy had made of the wear patches, and said "can you live with it?" I'm heading out to sea in a week, they had taken three weeks to do this crappy work, so i just shook my, head, said i guess so, and left. Bill paid in full. No offer to redo, no offer to issue a credit, nothing. I would stay away from these guys. From the other comments, it looks like they get it right sometimes, but they apparently have some guys who do crap work, they don't bother to have someone more senior inspect the work before they call the customer to pick up, and then they don't stand behind the quality of their work. read more

Had a moon roof fly off my older model Toyota. Two Toyota dealers told me there was no "open recall" on the vehicle and didn't want to help. I bought a used car a few months ago and after buying it I discovered that water had gotten underneath the carpet on the right side of the car and saturated the carpet padding. I knew I wouldn't be able to remove the seats and carpet by myself to properly dry everything out so I brought my car by Auto Interiors & Tops one day for an estimate. After looking at my car, a man there said he could do the job for $330, and it would take a few weeks to get an appointment as they were booked up with work. Not anxious to spend that type of money when I'm only working part-time, I left without setting up an appointment. As it seemed that I did not have many choices available in the area to perform the work I needed done, I reluctantly called back weeks later to set up an appointment. I marked down the date on my calendar. When I showed up with my car on the date I had been given, a woman at the desk inside said they weren't expecting me until the following Monday! I know I marked the correct date on my calendar for the appointment. Instead of asking me to come back next Monday, she took the keys to my car that Friday, knowing that their business is closed on Saturday but not telling me that. My car was there all weekend without any work being done on it. When I originally set up my appointment, I was told that the work would take approximately 2 days to do, as they had to take the entire carpet out of the car and let it air dry once the water was removed from it. As I said above, I left my car there on a Friday morning. The following Wednesday, I received a phone call from AI&T asking me if I knew how the water had gotten into my car and if anything had been done to fix the problem. I explained how I had made a repair to the seal around the exterior air intake as explained in an online forum. The next day I received another phone call from someone else at AI&T asking me the same thing. This time he suggested that someone from another company that they do business with come and look at my car and to repair possible leaks on the other side of the car as they found water on that side as well. When I asked how much this was expected to cost me, I was told around $100-110. I was told that this other man would probably be able to look at my car that day (Thursday). On Friday, one week after I had originally dropped off my car for an expected 2-3 day repair, I was finally notified that my car was ready to be picked up. The subcontractor who fixed the water leaks never called me as I had asked him to. It turned out that the extra work that he did ended up costing me an additional $175, not the $100-110 I was led to believe it would cost. The entire bill for the process ended up going from $330 to $570 including tax and and unknown "supply charge" of $17.10 for which I was given no explanation. Auto Interiors & Tops has apparently been doing business in Raleigh for quite a number of years, so it must have many satisfied customers. I don't doubt that if I were among the fortunate who own a classic car that needs restoration, that AI&T would be a good place to go for new upholstery, carpeting, etc. But not everyone in Raleigh has got a lot of money to spend on car repairs. If I'm given an estimate for a repair, I'd like to work to be as close to that estimate as possible, and a detailed explanation for any additional work that becomes necessary, which is only performed with my prior approval. My concerns about the increased costs for this job seem to have been brushed aside as unimportant, because I was never provided with any answers to my questions. As I said above, the subcontractor never told me exactly what he did to repair the water leaks. I also wasn't told what the additional $17.10 "supply charge" was for. The repair process took much longer than I had been originally promised, inconveniencing me for an entire week without my car (which is also my source of income at the moment). I have literally had auto body work done to repair damage from a car accident in less time than it took to remove water from a car's carpeting. Yet I was given no apologies by anyone at AI&T for the extra time it took to complete their work, nor for the fact that they weren't ready to begin the work on the day that I brought my car to them. It you have lots of money and time on your hands, this place will probably be fine for you. If on the other hand you need your work done as quickly as possible and at the lowest cost, you may want to look elsewhere. read more

Run don't walk from these guys. I took my 1999 911 Porsche convertible to Auto Interiors and Tops to replace the cloth top. I purchased a German Fabric top of the line top and they told me they would install it for me. They tout themselves as being "experts" on Porsche installs. Well apparently they let some novice install my top. When I got it home I noticed that there were huge gaps where the top meets the windows and if it ever rained I was going to get tons of rain in my interior. Also once i lowered the top it wouldn't go back up. So I had to make sure there was no chance of rain when I took it to the Porsche dealership to have them see what was done wrong. Apparently AI&T had installed the top with many basic pieces missing. The Porsche service manager couldn't believe they had sent the car out with such shoddy work. He said he used to recommend them for installs but after seeing the work they did on my car he would never recommend them again. Long story short I had the Porsche dealership do it right which cost me an arm and a leg. I was kind of stuck since my top wouldn't even raise and lower. Anyway...consider yourself warned. They are horrible. Don't take the chance. read more

Auto Interior & Tops did a great job recovering the headliner in my old Chrysler New Yorker, and for a very reasonable price. They were able to schedule an appointment quickly and they had the car in and out during the same workday. The headliner, which had developed a sag, now looks as good or better than when it left the factory, and I was out less than $200 -- remarkable. read more

I contacted this company, as recommended by a local Porsche dealer, to get a quote for replacing the convertible top on my car. Tommy Gardner, the owner, was most helpful in considering a fabric color change and the quality of the top material. Their quote was competitive and I decided to let them do the job. There were other companies closer to where I live (Florence, SC) but they didn't appear to have the knowledge and capabilities that AI&T had. Last August, AI&T did the job and what a great job they did! The new top actually fits and looks better than the OEM original. My complements to Tommy and his staff for an impecable job. read more

I paid $180 for them to reattach the rear window on my convertible top. They were up front about no warranty but said it works 90% of the time. Of course, I'm now in the 10%. It was obvious that the prep work was not done properly and the old adhesive completely removed before the repair. Their repair only held for 1 week. It's a simple job that will now be a DIY job done right by me. Not happy about the $180 I wasted. read more
