I called earlier in the week to see if I could leverage their services as a Tire Rack installer to have my winter wheels and tires swapped out on my 2015 Subaru Outback. I was told that I could be accommodated today. The Auto Europe representative on the phone went through a discussion with me about TPMS on my car, which led me to believe they could handle the wheel and tire swap and a TPMS reset. After all, why would he have even discussed TPMS with me over the phone? I was encouraged by this discussion, because I figured a place called "Auto Europe" might not be the best place for a Subaru. The Auto Europe representative allayed my concerns.
I had reasonable dealings with them in the past when they were handling both the seasonal tire swaps, and the seasonal tire storage on my 2009 Porsche Cayman S. So, I figured I had enough reason to trust that the job could be done right based on both those experiences, and the fact that they are a Tire Rack recommended installer, who also installed, mounted, balanced my winter wheels on my Porsche in the past.
Today, I brought the Subaru in. Pretty much, everything seemed okay until I had driven the car almost the entire way home--a good 15 - 20 minute drive. The TPMS warning light came on. I unloaded my wheels and tires and found that the headliner in the cargo compartment was marred by the road/tire grime.
I unloaded the wheels and tires at home. I let loose some expletives. I went back to Auto Europe to find remedies for both my TPMS, and my headliner issues. They had neither any idea how to reset the TPMS, nor any equipment to reset the TPMS, which is not at all what I expected based on my conversation with the shop's representative earlier in the week.
The guy at Auto Europe asked me if I tried to reset the TPMS. I told him that my impression was that I was unable to do so (without taking the car to a dealer or an installer with specialized equipment). He told me he had no such equipment for a Japanese car, had no idea about them, etc. This, of course did no really fit my expectations based on my phone conversation with the Auto Europe representative earlier in the week.
The guy at the shop today did offer to clean my headliner. I'll give home that. He did say in a seemingly arrogant fashion something to the effect of, "I don't know how that happened. [Our guys] are very careful with the kinds of cars we usually work on here."
I asked something to the effect of, "Well, why wouldn't they be as careful with my car?"
They could certainly have put my wheels and tires in large plastic bags like the local Firestone shop near my home, who installed my winter wheels in the first place. I'll be dealing with them instead to have my seasonal wheel/tire swaps done in the future. I could have avoided the two 20-minute round trips to Auto Europe, the extra 20-minute round trip, waiting time, and the extra expense of $20 to have the job finished by the Firestone shop near my home.
The Firestone shop isn't perfect by any means. My past experiences with Auto Europe working on my Porsche tire swaps led me to give it a try to see if I could make all of this go more smoothly. Apparently, I forgot the saying: the enemy of good is perfect. What an expensive mistake.
UPDATE:
To give credit where credit is due, Tom from Auto Europe called me later in the day to apologize for what happened. He also went on to say that the gentleman I dealt with earlier in the day wasn't aware that they had just purchased a tool which would allow them to most probably reset my TPMS. Apparently, when I came in one of the two technicians who knew about it/how to use it was off. The other was on his lunch break. Tom did offer to try to reset my TPMS at no cost if I hadn't had it done already. Thanks to Tom for the courtesy of the call, but still, it would cost me time, which IS money, to have it done. Nice offer, but it should have been handled properly from the start, and I shouldn't have had to waste my time and another $20 (when the original cost for the wheel/tire swap was $40) to get someone else to reset my TPMS. read more
