I am traveling cross country with my family in our RV and found that my tow vehicle began to make a loud clanking sound. After doing some research I assumed it was a broken motor mount . I brought it to Dale and he set up an appointment to see him the same day. Near disaster averted. Do not take any vehicle to this place. I am a female and an out of town'er, driving an older vehicle. They saw 'Sucker' stamped on my forehead from the moment I walked in the door. I am grateful for my 'phone-a-friends', social network, and my intuition that all said 'Run like hell!' I took my '86 Toyota RV in to have my transmission checked out before furthering my travels. After the mechanic test drove it, like he stole it, he told me that my 4th gear was gone and my 3rd gear was slipping. First off, I don't have a 4th gear. They also told me that my transmission fluid was burned, and that I needed to replace my whole transmission, which would cost $5,100 and leave me without my RV for about a week and a half. After watching some You-Tube videos and consulting a classic car buff, come to find out, the transmission fluid wasn't bright red - but it also wasn't burned. Dale and Bob at auto doctor really came through me. Very professional and timely. I broke down 20 miles outside of spearfish when my cruise control stopped accelerating and my gas pedal wouldn't. I got my car there right before they closed and they were able to look at it first thing in the morning. No codes showed on the dash and they had to trouble shoot every possible problem. I can't say enough good about Dale and his team! My wife and I were traveling from Colorado to Spearfish to see our son compete at a college track meet when we encountered car troubles due to adverse weather conditions. This happened on Friday 2/24/2017 and the other places we called said they couldn't get us in until the next week. Which obviously wasn't going to work for us. Dale didn't hesitate! He said he wasn't sure if he could fix it that day but would take a look for us. Well not only did he take a look he had us up and running within 2 hours! Dale could of us charged us any amount of money he wanted as we were at his mercy. I don't know what the hourly rate is in Spearfish, but in Colorado it is around $125.00 + per hour. Dale found the problem (water Pump) right away and honored the warranty. He treated us great and did a wonderful job. He was very reasonably priced even though we did not have any other options. Our 1988 Volvo was stalling intermittently on the I-90 Spearfish-bound from WY. We brought it into Auto Doctor and were informed by the owner, Dale, a few days later that the main fuel pump was leaking. (Keep this in mind, as it becomes relevant later on.) At a cost of $260 for the pump and $220 for labor, Dale replaced the part and we began our drive back to WY. 80 miles later, the car began exhibiting the exact same symptoms that we originally described to Dale - an intermittently stalling engine that started up after a short rest period, and would continue stalling every few minutes thereafter. We called Dale and let him know that the car had just stalled again; his response was that we could tow the car to his shop and he would have another look at it. At a probable cost of $300 dollars, he presumably knew that this wasn't going to happen. We limped the car home after another few stalls. Well, it turns out that this is such a common problem on the 1980's Volvos that it is documented online in articles literally titled "Top 10 Common Issues with Volvo 240 Models." When we got to researching the problem ourselves, and solved it by replacing a $8.12 part, (Google: Volvo 240 fuel pump relay) we were nonplussed, to say the least. We called Dale and let him know that we had solved the actual problem; he told us that properly diagnosing this issue would have taken him too long. (His words: Would you have liked me to drive the car around for 80 miles to figure this out? Note that a simple Google search would have provided his mechanics with a more accurate, and much cheaper, starting place.) Nonetheless, he would "speak with this wife" and discuss whether he would refund any money to us. Our request, by the way, was only a refund of the labor and his profit on the part- which, if his later assertion of only a $60 profit on the part was truthful, means that we were asking for $280/$480 back, and allowing him to keep 43% of his erroneous charge. Pretty generous on our part, we think. (And as you will soon see, our fuel pump was likely functioning perfectly to begin with.) We spoke a week later when we called to ask him if he and his wife had come to a resolution. Indeed, they had - and the resolution was to refund us nothing. In further argument over the technicals of the repair, Dale stated that he knew for a fact that the fuel pump was indeed shot- because he "ran power to it and it would not operate." He also told us "I don't need a 30 year old telling me how to run my business." You will recall that when we first brought the car in he said that the issue with the pump was a LEAK. Now, he claimed it was an electrical issue. Well, this sets off my nonsense-meter. I told Dale that our review would be an accurate reflection of the events. He told me "So you're asking me to BUY your review?" Dale, a lesson in free market economics: In EVERY interaction with a customer, you are buying their review. As a business owner, you are being paid by the customer to satisfy him; if you think that a customer's truthful review of your business will make you look bad, then simply change the customer's experience to a positive one. After we used the word "review," Dale did offer to give us a $60 credit at his shop "or an oil change." Dale, the opportunity to turn a nasty and extremely expensive experience into a merely unpleasant and costly one awaits you. read more

Dale and the guys nailed it! I was on a cross country road trip with two buddies and my dog when about 15 miles outside of Spearfish we had our back right wheel come flying off. This happened around 2pm on a Friday. Very Bizarre. Anyways, we were able to salvage the tire and only a few other things. These guys managed to hit junk yards and salvage used parts for my truck to get us back on the road for a traveling man's price. A couple of the guys doing the grunt work stayed late (on a Friday of all days) to get us back on the road with only a hiccup of an issue. I tipped accordingly (which you yelp users should too if you ever get treatment that is above and beyond like we did). I highly recommend this shop. Auto Doctor tried to charged me $45 for an alignment they couldn't complete due to a repair that needed to be made. They gave me a two huge estimates. One for something I didn't even ask for and another for what they thought would have fixed the problem. The alignment estimate had parts marked up by about 50%. In addition to their outrageous labor charges, they also charge $25.00 for "misc shop supplies" and a $12.50 charge for "hazardous materials" And this was to replace one ball joint and rotate tires! Needless to say I went to another mechanic. The tires ended up having broken belts, which Auto Doctor missed completely. So they would have rotated tires that were shot. And after all the work they estimated the problem would have still been there. Then after they told me the $45 charge from the first visit would be credited to the actual alignment, they tried to charge me for the entire alignment. Saying that the $45 would be credited if "they had done the work." With "work" meaning the huge estimated job and not the alignment they were originally supposed to do. They also charge extra for alignments with wheels bigger than 18", even though there is no additional work required over a normal alignment with wheels 18" or less. The guy even had the gall to tell me "they had a $40,000 alignment machine to pay for" Never, ever, ever go to the Auto Doctor in Spearfish, South Dakota... read more

I took my car here one day and once they found the problem the guy basically refused to give me my car keys. On top of that I told him I had to be to work by a certain time and he said that I would not be driving my car, and that they had taxis around the area to drive me. He then told me how much I was going to owe them. I told him I wasn't able to afford that and then he said he can't give me my car (that's understandable). I called my male friend and he came in to talk to the guy and he changed his story. He said that it wasn't going to be $274 on the spot and it was only $50. My friend had told me before he went there that they did a diagnostic on his car for free. It is ridiculous when someone changes their story just because it is a male/female talking to them. I will never be going back here and I would say that anyone who reads this should do the exact same. He is a jerk, unfair, and changes his story to make himself seem better. read more
