My teacher, Bob Klein, is incredibly knowledgeable, but humble, patient and kind. He doesn't just teach what the movements of the form look like, he teaches all the inner mechanics which are what make it so beneficial to one's health and the way one feels. It also is what makes it so much fun and interesting. I always say I don't know which it helps more, my body or my brain! He teaches Qigong along with the Tai Chi, in preparation for the movements. He not only teaches you the health benefits of Tai Chi but the martial art aspects of it as well. There are classes for self defence and push hands as well. I noticed after studying with Bob for a while that I was able to apply the movements that I learned in class to the ways I moved in daily life (which has put a lot less strain on my joints) and the philosophies we learned in class that are part of Tai Chi Chuan have helped to reduce stress and to put things in better perspective. When I leave class, my mind is cleared, breathing is slower and if I came in stressed, I leave calm. I feel gratitude for each class. What is so nice about these classes is that one is never made to feel silly or embarrassed no matter how uncoordinated you feel (and believe me, I was very uncoordinated when I first started). He just wants you to learn it so you can get the same benefits and joy that he does from it and he will work with you in whatever way you need to achieve that. Bob encourages questions and never treats any question as silly. He is always happy to patiently go over whatever you need him to. I always come out of class learning something new. If I were to say I really loved going to class or that it has helped me enormously, it would be an understatement. It has literally changed my life. I had a serious accident approximately 3 1/2 years ago seriously injuring my back, ribs and elbow which required surgery. I felt like I could never be the same active person that I had always been. This was just a few months after I had started studying with Bob. I was not able to return to class for 6 months, but fortunately I had his DVD's to work with. As soon as I got out of the hospital I practiced my qigong and form using his DVD's . I was told I would need back surgery (but didn't have it) and that I could never open my arm fully again. I returned to class as soon as I was able to and could drive. I take several classes a week with Bob and practice at home. With class and practice, I cannot believe how good my back feels and I shocked my surgeon by being able to fully open my arm. I can be myself again. In the process I have also come a long way in my understanding of Tai chi. I think this school is unique in the amount of attention each person receives in class, the depth of Bob's knowledge, and the amount of attention to details he provides. It makes all the difference in the way one does the form. Most importantly, Bob and his wife, Jean, who is also certified to teach, and quite often gives us the benefit of her presence in the class as well, create a wonderful environment to learn in, one in which no one ever feels judged. Thank you Bob!

Center Island Aikido is BY FAR the best value for Aikido instruction on Long Island. Monthly fees…read moreare very low, and members may attend as many classes as they wish. The dojo is well-lit, clean and spacious, with wall-to-wall high-quality tatami mats on the floor. All instructors are volunteers (which helps keep the fees low), and most have been with the organization for many years. They are very dedicated to the study of Aikido. Many started out in different martial arts backgrounds and bring diverse and valuable perspectives to their Aikido instruction. A student who attends different classes will experience softer styles or more martial styles, acquire exposure to Zen philosophy, and even learn physics that make Aikido so effective and engaging. Aikido's underpinning philosophy does not encourage competition. The goal of Aikido is to blend with and neutralize attacks with as little physical harm to the attacker as is possible, making this a preferred martial art for law enforcement and other institutional personnel to utilize. Since the practice does not involve repetitive kicks and punches, injuries to the practitioner's joints and tissues are largely avoided. Students are instructed in techniques for preventing injury when falling, making this a practical study for anyone who wants to remain active and reduce the chance of severe injuries into old age. I have been to several dojos on Long Island and New York City, and, of those that provide Aikido instruction, Center Island Aikido is my favorite. The instructors and students are definitely the very best part of it!

I chose New Jersey Tai Chi through a regional magazine, and I was delighted with its holistic approach to fitness, martial arts, and mind/body wellness. And my experience there did not disappoint. In the short time that I have been practicing with Harry, Paul, and others, I am learning not just the movements and breathing, but also leveraging the strength of my entire body. In addition to the physical movements, I am also learning to focus with my mind on the flow of energy and listening through Push Hands with my mind's eye. In every class, Harry demonstrates the application of those elegant moves into practical and powerful self-defense tactics. It's still too early to tell the full health benefits yet, but I feel more flexible, more at ease with my mind and body, and TaiChi is now a part of my exercise routine.
