My local Haemoglobin (blood) Bank. The flashest blood donating centre I've been to. With an open layout design - with some sneaky booths to do interviews in - it makes it feel less clinical and more atmospheric.
I've had so many different people set me up on the machines to take my donation, but almost everyone of them was great for a chat. As a fellow nurse, its interesting to me to know why they want to do that role, and what they did before working at the blood bank.
With the ability to take whole blood, plasma and platelets - and according to your veins - you can help the supply of stock by rolling up your sleeve for as little as 15minutes (whole blood) to an hour (platelets). Following your time serving those in our society who require these transfusions, refresh yourself after with a nice iced coffee, cheese and crackers (my personal choice post donating). Or something else on offer.
If you are like me - you might try and race those around you which can help make your time a bit more fun. Not like you can actually cause your donation to be taken faster, but the fun is there anyway.
And depending on who you get to look after you or who is around you, you might be all set up with your blanket, drink, lap table and book - but barely even open the cover due to some great conversations that have been had at the Red Cross Blood Donor Centre. read more
