I tried the Australian Bakery for the first time yesterday while attending Chalktoberfest. I tried the curry chicken pie and the potato soup. I wasn't a fan of the curry chicken it wasn't like the Jamaican curry that I'm familiar with. The potato soup on the other hand was so good and was the perfect side item. It was very flavorful and warmed me right on up from the slightly chilly weather. I'll definitely return, but I'll try a different pie. read more

It has been under a new ownership for a while. Talked to the owner and she is very focused on providing authentic Australian dining experience to her customers, including great customer service. There are a lot of Australian products for sale as well. The atmosphere is pleasant and you also can enjoy outside seating with the wiew to the beautiful Marietta Square. If you do not care for the street noise, sit inside. This time I had a Matchstick, fluffy layers of puff pastry, jam and lots of whipped cream. It was heavenly. Enjoyed it with large cup of very tasty coffee. The cafeteria is not open from dusk to dawn, so before you go check their website. You will not be disappointed. I'm going back soon. read more

My husband hyped me up for this place. He said he was told by several that it was a MUST stop at on our roadtrip to Blue Ridge. Ok, here we go I guess. We showed up to the Bakery on 4th of July weekend. The town was cute and buzzing, decorated around the center of it. We walked up to Australian Bakery Cafe and it was pretty crowded, so figured that was a good sign. We walk in and it was kinda musty and hot in there. We didn't mind as we are used to Florida so it was normal for us. The decor was a little outdated as well. We got to the counter and the person who greeted us said she was new. We were patient with her and let her kind of ask others when she needed help (we've all been there). We ordered a few pastries that we honestly never ate & 2 iced coffees. We paid the bill and waited for the coffees. The coffees were not made the way we asked and were gross. I ended up tossing mine. Definitely a let down, but thanks for letting us check out a little bit of Marietta! read more

Australian Bakery Excellence! Friendly shop owner, scrumptious desserts! As we strolled through the Marietta Square we noticed the bakery with the large kangaroos in the shop windows! Being curious, we had to go in and check out Australian foods! The display cases were filled with beautiful pastries, pies, cookies and more! We couldn't resist a couple sweet treats and our tastebuds were delighted! The restaurant has fish and chips, food/meals made to order, meats and grocery items. We had no idea what to expect as we walked in and the wonderful aroma was very welcoming. Everything looked delicious in the cabinet. We ordered the steak and cheese pie and the chicken and vegetable pie. Both were delicious but I probably favored the steak and cheese. We stopped by again after shopping and enjoyed the Tuesday afternoon bluegrass jam - how fun. I also purchased some Shepherd's Pie to take home to family. I love this place. I got vegetable pie and rum ball and it was delicious. The pie is soo big I had enough for leftovers and wanted to go back for more. I'm a bit torn because it's hard to find an Australian place, and this really is one. Flags on the ceiling hang for some Australian states and territories (but weirdly omitting Queensland, SA, NT, and NSW as far as I could tell, which is probably more than half the country). Australiana was strewn about and various hard to find goods were available for purchase. I couldn't resist the Tim Tams, a classic Australian cookie (biscuit, if you prefer) a delicious junk food. They were several times the price they would be in Australia, but to be fair when I looked online the prices were quite similar; apparently niche goods from a faraway island country are expensive. The spread of baked goods looked much like a lot of places you'd find in Australia. To me, this wasn't the sort of place I would go to a ton during the years I lived there. For one thing, the country is quite cosmopolitan and has plenty of diverse options, and for another, the beachy areas often included more avante garde cuisine. This place is more what you'd find on the side of a rural road where there wasn't anything else for a while. The thing is I am not the hugest fan of lamingtons or pavlovas, let alone Anzac biscuits. I'm more of an avo on toast person. Their pies and such also weren't particularly vegetarian-friendly, which again resembles a lot of old-school Aussie pie places rather than the hip one I liked near Bondi. The veggie pastie I ended up with was a reasonable melange of potatoes and other veggies, but I was surprised by how much it was and this one wasn't imported from the other side of the world. I still might come back and peruse the pastries or shelved goods more (and I wish I'd noticed earlier that they had a seasonal Bundaberg ginger beer variant in the fridge, if not in 4-pack form). I do want an Australian shop, but this one only somewhat met my needs. read more

I stopped here before visiting Kennesaw National Park. I ordered a turkey bacon and egg roll that had just been baked. The dough was soft and the egg inside was fluffy and flavorful. I liked the down to earth decor and the array of Australian candy, cookies and pantry staples in the shop. You can buy frozen pies from the freezer case. read more

Excellent pies and pastries. You've got to have the fish and chips. The batter is perfect!! Not much to say about it- great food. They are only open 8a-4p so no "dinner". However, they have frozen that you can heat at home. Love the imported foods and candies for Purchase as well. Great customer service and excellent quality products. The staff are welcoming and always willing to share their recommendations. It is a small restaurant with about 8 4-top tables and booths. I ordered the lamb and curry pie, my husband the Ned Kelly & the kiddo the soup of the day, Potato & Bacon, and salad. She told us which pies were hot fresh out of the oven. We ordered some made earlier in the day so they weren't steaming hot but the Hot Fries were! They were both super delicious! They have a super cute dining room with about 10 tables or so. I love all the little snacks and things around the shop, as well as the interesting desserts and pastries. My fiance lived in Australia for a bit, so I was excited to bring goodies back for him. The sandwiches are absolutely amazing, as are the pies--very buttery, and ample filling! The pastries to me were okay, and I'll leave it at that as I honestly don't even remember what I got now (bit forgettable, I imagine). Perhaps we got the wrong pastries--I'll definitely be back for the sandwiches, so why not try some more sweets? Little note that the salad is really just mixed greens with a packet of dressing, so nothing to write home about there. read more

This was a unique treat which we were glad we tried. The atmosphere was as very pleasant with the super friendly staff greeting us. We asked for her recommendation and without hesitation she suggested the fish fry. My friend and I decided to split it since neither one of us was super hungry. It was excellent and the half order was the right size for our appetite. We also had a pastry which had just enough fruit for us both. The pastry itself was interesting ... melted in my mouth. We came here after lunch down the road for some unique Australian baked desserts. They are known for their cases full of pastries and sweets. They also had a grocery section with a few cookies, crackers, and other pre-packaged foods from the country. It felt like the gourmet section of a world market and was fun to browse. None of the bakery sweets were labeled with names or ingredients, so we had to ask. Staff was friendly, but a little over aggressive. It's a bit small inside for how busy it was when we were there, but luckily a table opened up right when we got our food. Coffee was solid. Came here with my sister in one of the coldest days in December. This is such a cute and cozy shop/bakery/cafe. We ordered the lunch special with a savory pie and side of soup. My sister thoroughly enjoyed her shepherds pie and my chicken curry pie was very flavorful. The hot French onion soup was exactly what we needed to warm up during this cold day. I had heard great things about this place online for a while and had a chance to try it since I was in this part of the U.S. I have to say that I was really disappointed. I am Australian and know my Aussie "Tucker". I had hoped that my experience would be great so I could support fellow Aussies but it just was not good. Good things: ambience with a bustling cafe feel. Aussie flags and other items adorn the walls and ceiling. Service was pleasant and displays of items are clearly and neatly presented. An Anzac "Cookie" was decent. Not so good things: essentially both Pies (Steak and Onion / Steak and Mushroom) ordered were underwhelming and disappointing. The pastry felt and tasted soggy and lacked taste. It didn't taste that fresh. The fillings were ok but so dry; almost more like an empanada than a typical pie/gravy filling. The Sausage Roll pastry was similarly soggy and not fresh tasting, The filling seemed hard and maybe not reheated enough. None of this is reminiscent of good pies or sausage rolls back down under. Accompanying homemade chips tasted old. Prices seemed decent. I'm so sorry to write such a lukewarm review but it's my experience and if this is the norm, it's not a good introduction to those unfamiliar with popular Aussie food. The energy was so good when I went in--everyone on either side of the counter was in good spirits. I was happy enough to have a coffee and a muffin (my usual morning fare), but I was tempted...with cakes and pastries, as the charming counterperson said, "fresh from the oven!" As my appointment in the area got postponed twice, I should have come back for lunch. Next time I will!
