This is a true small business, it's one person working out of his apartment, so it's not a storefront. You fill out an intake form online, schedule a drop-off, and then get the address. The turnaround for me was fast, about 48 hours for the three tapes, and communication was smooth with texts and automated emails. I appreciated that he offers multiple digital options, downloadable files saved in the cloud or a thumb drive. I ran into a small hiccup playing the files on my Mac due to a codec issue, but he took the time to explain my options and made sure I was satisfied with the final result. I have been a client of Ben's and Austin Video Solutions for almost a year now. He has transferred old vhs tapes and mini camcorder tapes onto dvd for me. Just recently he transferred all of my old college radio show cassette tapes to cd, which was a major undertaking of time and precision to produce. First off, he has always maintained a constant level of professionalism and efficiency in getting all of my tapes transferred to dvd. You can easily see the quality of work in the finished product and I have been always happy with the end result. He is extremely fast in his turn around time to complete tape-to-dvd transfers for me. He is very easy to work with and is very good at understanding your needs. I have been a repeat customer of Ben's for almost a year now and proud to be one of his first client's because I can trust him with my personal videotapes of my honeymoon, family vacations, and my other home videos. That is why I keep going back to him for any little project, big or small. With the recent undertaking of producing all of my old cassette tapes of my college radio show from 1997, he painstakingly restored the sound of my old shows and the end result sounded even more crisp and clear than how it originally sounded on the original cassette tapes. Ben is an ultimate professional and does excellent work. I initially hired him to transfer 4 older miniDV tapes over to digital onto a USB Drive. He did this quicker than expected -- within 24 hours. These tapes were very important to me because they were videos of my wedding from 10 years ago that my wife and I had never seen. I finally decided it was time to surprise her for our 10 year anniversary. When Ben learned of this, he suggested that he could edit the entire wedding into a 6 to 8 minute highlight video. Not an easy task to do with almost 4 hours of footage to sort through. Ben has 30 of my tapes that he was going to convert to DVDs. I used him based on all of the good reviews here. Just like the other reviewer-Vadim G. says, he cancelled the appt I had to pick up my DVDs-he said that his car was stolen and that I could pick them up the next day. I never heard back from him-have sent 2 emails and left a message on voice mail-have not heard anything. Does anyone know where he is??? Decided to finally write my first review due to this guy never replying to my email nor phone call. He had a real nice special before Valentines day. I wanted to have videos of my child made for my wife. I emailed the guy a week before the special was over and he never emailed me back. I called and left a message for him to call me back before the special was over and he once again never responded back. Now the Valentines special is over. The work was completed on time, it was way under priced (he could double his prices), allowed me to stop by on a Sunday afternoon to pick up my DVD's despite it not being during business hours, and he even offered to meet me half way to give me my DVD's as he knew that I had to drive all the way from Round Rock to S. Austin. I will refer everybody I know to Ben and my only regret is I don't have more business for him. Oh, and I am calling bs on Vadim's review below. There is not way Ben lost 13 tapes and is not responding. I would like to post an update to say that I did finally receive my tapes and the completed work in the mail almost 6 weeks after initial drop-off. I changed some of the wording in my original review to not be considered slanderous and to truly express that my statements are based on my experiences and opinions through my own personal interactions with this business and other parties connected. To this day, I have received no returned communication from Ben explaining what happened, just my tapes, my completed transfers and my receipt. I have personally messaged Adam to express my major concerns and experience with AVS and Ben. I have never been so happy to have VHS tapes again....I didn't even care any more about the DVD files. read more

It has been a few years since I have worked with AVS, but I feel as though I need to get my story out there so people know what they are getting into. I initially contacted Ben back in 2011 to get several of my families VHS tapes to DVDs. At the time, Ben seemed to be on the ball and did everything in a timely manner and rather professionally. After watching the DVDs it was obvious that he had messed up the order and forgot one of our VHS tapes in the DVD mix. I let him know and he kindly offered to take it back and redo the VHS for me. It was then that I lost all contact with Ben. After dropping off the VHS he never answered any emails or phone calls telling me it was finished and I never got my VHS back!!! I have tried to return to his SHADY apartment in south Austin to only be told that he has several VHS tapes in his house and there is little doubt that he will find it in the mix!! Umm what?! He basically wouldn't even try to look! I offered to look through them for him, and he continued to spout off some legal crap that wasn't real. I'm assuming he has lost my family video, because it has been years since I have heard from him again. This guy is a fraud and will steal your personal home videos and never contact you again. Do not use him!!! I am sick over the fact that I used poor judgement in trusting this guys with such personal items. I wish I would have used some legal help in the beginning for breach of contract as well to get my personal property back. Since he refuses to be motivated in any other way. read more

A small apartment business run by one sketchy guy. Ben performed a VHS to DVD conversion for me, however the sound was only outputting on the Left channel (important since this was a concert video) He gave me the bill with a note that he will "fix ASAP." It's now one week later and he simply will not respond to emails or answer the phone (two things he was definitely quick to do last week). I'm charging back my purchase and getting this performed elsewhere. Go here at your own peril, just know that he's a pretty sketchy, unprofessional guy. You get what you pay for. First let me start off by saying that I am a film school graduate and could've done this job myself. I chose to use this service because I do not own a VHS player and I am lazy. I took 2 one-hour home VHS videos to this business, which is located out of an apartment home. The initial drop-off appointment set-up and meeting was fine. Benjamin Dotto was cordial enough. I made a pick-up appointment for four days later. Ben had to cancel on me but that was fine because I was planning on canceling as well. He offered to leave my videos outside his doorstep for me to come by and pick up and assured me it was safe, although I was not okay with that. (Plus, the heat is not good for tape.) I made another appointment for the next week which I was also unable to make. I texted Ben beforehand but never heard back. I emailed him a day later about coming to pick up my materials. I never heard back. I called him a day later and left a voicemail. At this point, I began to get frustrated. I read some of the other reviews and became paranoid because the videos I had dropped off were videos of my brother and I's birthday parties as kids in Mexico. My mom would be devastated if anything happened to the videos and I would feel really guilty. I started to think that I may have been scammed (I had already paid online) or that maybe I would get my videos back 2 months later like some other reviewers mentioned. I am impatient, so I drove to the place of business and knocked on the door. Some other person who could've been a roommate, a friend, or maybe even an "associate" answered the door. I informed him I was there to pick up my videos from Ben and gave him my name. He came back with my materials and everything looks fine so far. (I will update after I have reviewed the quality of my DVDs). I told him about being unable to get a hold of Ben and he informed me that Ben had been sick recently. Even if this were true, some sort of response is warranted if you want to be taken seriously as a business in my opinion. Besides the other horrible reviews on yelp, another reason why I had started to panic was because I went back to the Austin Video Solutions website and had a closer look. One of the informational videos on there wouldn't even play properly. I had to go to YouTube to be able to watch it. The video itself is the definition of an amateur video. I skimmed through some of the other video editing examples on the YouTube channel was thoroughly unimpressed. There was nothing at all professional about the videos. My college colleagues made videos of vastly superior quality. The sound wasn't even of a decent quality (and if you want to know how professional someone is, just pay attention to their sound quality). After researching this "company" a bit closer, and after my own personal experience using their tape transfer services, I would definitely not recommend this to anyone. Just pay a few extra bucks and go to an actual business establishment. This is fine if you're technologically challenged and you've got a rinky dink video you want to convert to DVD. And if you do not have a high emotional investment in the video. And if you do not mind driving way down to south Austin. Otherwise, I would definitely not recommend this if you've got time-sensitive or emotional material you need help with. I would definitely NOT advise anyone to have this company do any sort of post-production or editing work. And I definitely do not see this company providing good service to a project of any larger magnitude. The informality and lack of communication make this very young start-up crumble on its knees. Ben is the nicest and most professional young businessman I have ever met . I felt like a respected, real person as well as a customer, from the moment I walked in to the moment I left. I wish there were more like him. I dealt with a really bad insurance business owner the day before and as I was being yelled at by that unprofessional person, I thought of Ben and I Thanked God that that he made more people like Ben than this other person.. Not sure why my updated review or original review aren't showing up, but in short started out great as Ben seemed to be a good guy to work with but in the end was a major waste of time unnecessary stress and never even got the project completed correctly after 4weeks prior to a last resort deadline when I was told the job would only take 2 days.. I hope my other reviews end up coming up later because I don't want to write out all the details again; but long story short my assumption is that this solo-man operated business won't be around much longer if even ridiculous enough to still be accepting any jobs. Highly unprofessional company. I set an appointment through their website with Ben. Received a confirmation of time and location to drop off several Mini DV tapes for transfer to a hard drive. I drove all the way down to far south austin and arrived on time for the appointment. There was no answer at the door. I called both numbers provided, no answer. I texted both numbers, no reply. I waited 15 minutes and then left. I have still not received any follow-up communication as to why Ben was not there for the appointment. Seems from other reviews this is a trend with Austin Video Solutions. I would not recommend using this company, nor would I trust them with any valuable videos. I needed help getting a video off an iPad and converted to a DVD and Ben was UNBELIEVABLY helpful and patient with me, trying to help me through numerous options in getting the video transferred. Ben was incredibly responsive to all my questions via email and even spent a few hours with me on the phone into the first evening I reached out to him, trying to help me avoid driving to his business for something that could have been done digitally. Ben always kept a very positive attitude throughout the process, even when I was incredibly frustrated. In addition to helping me with what I originally contacted him about, Ben went above and beyond and put together the most awesomely hilarious clip from the video I sent him. Terrible experience...very unprofessional and disorganized. Ben seems like a nice, enthusiastic guy, which makes me really sad to say that I strongly regret seeking his services. I had him transfer 23 hi8 tapes to .MOVs. The initial turnaround was quick and I was impressed, until I looked at the files. Most of them were so choppy, they were unwatchable. He responded quickly to my complaint and I brought them back that day. He said he'd have them done within a few days, but a week passed with little communication from Ben. I wouldn't have minded having them over a week later if he'd set the expectation, but instead he was acting super shady. When I finally came over to pick them up, he gave me my tapes with my hard drive in a different HD case than the one I'd given him before (wtf??) and one tape was missing. Apparently it was stuck in the machine and he was just going to let me walk out without telling me. When I got home and opened my hard drive only a hand full of them were actually transferred, most of which were out of sync. Ben first tried to blame it on me, and then admitted that he "might" have accidentally deleted a bunch of files. Huge waste of time and money. read more

I'm having a similar problem as other recent reviewers with AVS/Ben. I dropped off a tape to be converted to DVD's...Ben emailed me saying it was done and offered to ship them to me. I paid via paypal and expected them to arrive in the mail soon...and they never have. I've tried contacting him numerous times via email, phone, and going over there...but no luck. I had my cc company dispute the charge and get my money back...but I really want my original tape back! It's the only copy I have, and now I don't think I'll ever see it again. I needed some OLD VCR tapes converted into DVD's -and that's when I randomly found Austin Video Solutions on the web. Their website stated they will convert videos into DVD's for $5.00! So I called and Ben actually came over to my house to pick my tapes up-at no extra charge! Then I got the DVD's back very quickly and the labeling on the DVD's looked REALLY professionally done! I watched the video's and the quality looked REALLY GREAT! I would highly recommend Austin Video Solutions to anyone and it really is $5.00 per tape!! There was a note stuck in his door so I read it hoping it was from him explaining why he was unable to keep our appointment. The note was actually from someone threatening to get a search warrant and bring the police there to retrieve their stuff. Very strange and creepy vibe. read more

This is either the least professional "business" of all-time or a curiously low-rent scam. Things seemed fine when I dropped my video off; Ben was personable, told me he could have the tape converted in short order, and even offered a "sale price" of only five dollars. I made an appointment to pick the tape up the following weekend. When I showed up to get it... nothing. He either wasn't home at all or was refusing to answer the door. I made another appointment (through his third-party online service) to try again the following day... still nothing. Multiple phone calls and e-mails yielded no response, and the conveniently filtered reviews reveal that I'm hardly the first person to have this problem. All that for five dollars? As I said, that would be pretty low-rent for a scam, but I can't think of a plausible reason why someone would want to steal an old videotape of someone else's family get-together. Don't make the same mistake I did. If you need videos converted, find a legitimate company, not some guy in his apartment who can easily ignore you if he doesn't want to do the work and just wants to keep your money. read more

Had some tapes I wanted turned into DVDs and also wanted some backup video files. Made an appointment with Ben and showed up with my old tapes. He had a lot of professional looking equipment (VCRs and DVD players and such) and seemed more than up for the task. Looks like he added some more pieces to his collection since last time. Before I went to pick up the old tapes and new DVDs, I already had my video files in my inbox to download. Videos came out as good as I can expect given the age of the medium. As Ben explained, he can only enhance the image so much and was goes in is what comes out...However, it did look better than before and was enhanced to a degree.
