My husband, our two children, and I had a 4:30 p.m. tee time and were playing nine holes. Around 6:30 p.m., while we were on our ninth and final hole, the course marshal, Steve, approached us and told us we needed to move faster. I immediately responded, "I'm sorry, we'll go faster." Instead of simply accepting that response or having a respectful conversation, Steve screamed back, told us to look at the people behind us and "golf faster," then drove away. I went to the clubhouse because I felt the interaction was unnecessarily rude and wanted to discuss it. What followed was one of the most disappointing customer service experiences I have ever had. During the conversation, three different men referred to me as "hysterical." Did I raise my voice? Yes. After repeatedly feeling dismissed, ignored, and talked over, I became upset. I also cried. Not because of golf, but because I felt like no one was listening to me and parts of the situation felt more like I was being mocked than heard. At one point, in front of my daughter, I asked Steve to stop walking away from me and have a face-to-face conversation. Rather than addressing the situation, he threatened to call the police. What makes this especially frustrating is that when Steve later spoke with my husband, my husband explained that we were not behind pace at all and that we were actually right on time. Steve agreed and admitted that he was wrong. In other words, the entire situation could have been avoided with a respectful conversation from the beginning. Steve then told us he hoped this would not leave a bad impression of the course and that he hoped we would come back. My husband's response was simple: it is unlikely. No child should have to watch their mother be treated that way for asking to be spoken to with basic kindness and respect. I am a new golfer and was excited to spend an evening on the course with my family. Instead, I left feeling humiliated and discouraged. I fully understand that course staff have a job to do and that pace-of-play conversations are sometimes necessary. What is not necessary is speaking disrespectfully to customers, dismissing their concerns, calling them "hysterical," threatening them, and then later admitting the complaint was unfounded. We traveled a significant distance to visit Aurora Hills Golf Course and were very disappointed by the experience, particularly with how we were treated by Charles Ray. When we arrived, we were a few minutes late, and the staff initially appeared accommodating. However, when it was time for our tee time, we were not provided with a course map or clear instructions about where we were supposed to wait or begin. We proceeded based on the information available to us. Shortly afterward, a gentleman approached us yelling, "Stop it, stop it, stop it." He was not wearing a name tag or identifiable uniform, so we genuinely did not know who he was or why he was addressing us in that manner. We later learned that we were apparently at the wrong hole. Had we simply been given a map or clear directions when we checked in, this situation could have easily been avoided. We were then told to return and line up again and that our names would be called over the intercom. We decided to take a very quick bathroom break. At approximately 8:01, we stepped away, and by 8:04 we had returned. We were then confronted again, this time being told loudly and in front of customers and employees that our names had been called over the intercom six minutes earlier and that we could simply get our money back. The manner in which this was handled was completely unnecessary and unprofessional. We were not intentionally disregarding instructions; we were unfamiliar with the course and had not been provided with the information necessary to navigate the starting area. A simple explanation or direction would have resolved the situation. What was especially disappointing is that we had experienced golfers in our group who have played at many courses and even they had never experienced this type of treatment. As beginners, we certainly did not feel welcomed or supported. I do want to acknowledge that the bartender and one of the cooks independently apologized to us afterward, which we appreciated. One of them also indicated that this type of behavior from Charles Ray was not unusual. We traveled a long way to play here and unfortunately left feeling embarrassed and unwelcome. Golf should be an enjoyable experience, especially for people who are new to the sport. Clear communication and basic professionalism would have made a significant difference. Booked a tee time. Walk in there to be told golf course is closed and that I didn't book a tee time. Then he pulls it up and says oh okay here it is. If the old asshole at the front had any brains it is oretty easy to check to see if you have any body scheduled and alert them it's closed. Drove 40min to get to this shitty golf course to be greeted by an old grumpy asshole. First day off work in 4 months and wasted the day trying to book here. Staff SUCKS! Got scolded at for pace of play when the foursome in front of me was taking 15-17 minutes per hole!!!! Was told to stop waiting at the tee box and hit, even though it was clear I would hit into the foursome. They didn't even get a warning. Price of the course was insane for a 5 hour round. Hole 10 wasn't even a hole. What the heck is this place. Good views, but took up my whole afternoon. read more

The only problem we had with this course was the customer service. We understand that it's a public golf course and we can't choose who we get matched up with, that's not our grievance. We also understand that part of the job is to let people know when they're a bit behind, however, this needs to be done respectfully. One of the workers driving the course was very rude and condescending stating that "there are two groups of serious golfers behind you" but only chose to tell us, not the whole group or the group infront of us that we were also waiting on. When we tried to bring this up after our course, we were met with an "oh well" attitude and that we were just "unlucky". read more

Pros: Food is decent, overall course condition for a public course is pretty nice. Putting green is in great shape and they have a good driving range. They keep the club house clean as well as rental equipment. Cons: Pro Shop Staff. Majority of the staff in the pro shop is extremely rude. Example, one of their staff who is also a coach, named "Charlie" is very rude and does not come across as a pleasant person in general. Another staff member, I believe his name is "Chuck" is also lacking in positive energy and always comes across as though I am inconveniencing him. Today, I missed my call for my tee-time because they had the speaker turned down to where those of us chipping in the practice area could not make out what we being said - if we even heard it to begin with. On that note, the chipping area is nice, however it would be a big improvement if the chipping greens were actual "greens". Going back to the pro shop staff, and this needs to be seriously addressed. When customers are using the credit card machine, it is common for the staff member working the register to take the stylus and select options on the screen for the customer, rather than letting the customer operate the credit card machine themselves. This is rude and it is not their place to make selections for the customer, especially when it comes to their personal financial transactions. PERIOD. read more

I go in and pay get warmed up and some lady decides to let her friends jump in front of me putting another single in my place, what a clown and not the way city courses or any course for that measure should run things. First there are no hills on this golf course. Greens and fairways were in good shape. They were friendly in the pro shop. Now the bad at the turn went into the bar area and waited for a while because the lady running it was flirting with a customer. The whole back nine we had to wait about 10-15 minutes per shot. The group two groups ahead of us would wait for the group In front of them to leave the green. Every hole including par 4s and 5s. Then would hit it 100 yards at best. The group ahead of us played 2-3 balls each tee. No marshal and they wouldn't let a twosome play thru. I've played 2 city of Aurora courses this year and both rounds approached 5 1/2 hours. Played last weekend at Thorncreek in Thornton in 4 hours and 15 minutes. I'm done with the City of Aurora golf courses and I live in Aurora.. HIRE a Marshal. read more

Reasonably price. The cart staff was very impressive, and attentive. I wish I would've got the cart attendant names. I am pregnant, and he informed me he just disinfected the bathroom. When he was getting to lock up the bathrooms for the night, and he personally went out of his way to ask me if I needed to use the restroom before he locked it. Overall, Aurora Hills is a nice muni to play. I've played here a few times and find the course enjoyable and not terribly difficult. The course is in good shape except for the tenth hole which for the first 150 yards of the fairway is completely torn up for some reason. The tenth hole is also very odd because there is a 90 degree dogleg turn which is very severe and most golfers need to lay up their tee shot 160-175 yards then then can go straight to the hole. Other than the tenth, most holes are pretty straightforward and you are rewarded with straight shots (mine can go all over being a 15-20 handicap). The food/beverage cart is hit or miss. The fees are reasonable, more so if you walk. It is a fairly easy course to walk, as you don't have too long of a distance to go between greens and tee boxes. This course does stay pretty busy during the weekends. read more

I haven't played this course in 20 years, since summer 1998. I played it only a handful of times period, while on a summer trip with my parents. But I thought of Aurora Hills tonight while googling courses I played long ago. Yes, the 10th hole makes no sense. But I remembered this course and its name specifically due to that hole and the bizarre requirement of a mid iron lay up on a confused par 5. Sure they could make it a bland par 3 followed by a narrow straightaway par 5. That would be a blender and no chance I'd be back here 20 years later, looking it up. I remember standing on that tee, tempted to hit a soft cut over water. These days with hybrids there are probably some who could pull it off. But the landing area so short and overall the reward not sufficient, so I went along with maybe a 6 iron. One time I distinctly remember pushing it and certain the ball was in the hazard but somehow it held dry by 2 feet. An old guy sitting alongside the tee deadpanned, "Nice shot." The remainder of the hole isn't exactly cupcakes either. Otherwise I recall hitting a colossal tee shot on #1 with a perfect slight cut, to within a short pitch shot of the green. A guy on the tee said, "Oh my god," as the ball screamed toward the green. I acted as if it were my norm. The front nine got congested on #2. I see that in reviews and it holds up from memory. Then there were some harmless back and forth par 4s in the middle of that nine. I liked #18 and always played it well. It was a great opportunity to unleash a long straight one but with just enough trouble if wide. The employees were friendly and the locals great as playing partners. One guy told me I was aiming too far right on a par 3 late in the front nine. I put down a club as guide and darn if he wasn't correct. My optics were screwed up. I still fight that. Another guy gave me a takeaway tip that I utilize two decades later. I'm confident the same basics hold up today. Give it a try. Like that guy on YouTube ranted...Leave Number Ten Alone. read more

Hands down the worst experience in a club house I have ever had. On top of being an overpriced dog track. Had a 9:46 tee time, got to the course at 9:30. Standing in line to wait to pay our green fee we see the pro shop(and looks to be the club pro)guy explaining his new swing to his "buddies" about 8 minutes we listened to this. He then proceeds to charge them for there rounds. As I approach I let him know we have a 9:46 tee time, his reply was immediately rude in front of a room full of golfers. " you show up 1 minute before your tee time?" Was his reply. I calmly explained we have been sitting in the pro shop for over 7 minutes. "Well you need to show up 30 minutes before your tee time". Was his next comment. The golf course was on a delay because of the cold so they didnt start till 9am. It was around 39°. After we got lectured about time of arrival he proceed to let me know maybe i should play somewhere else. Part because the back nine was walking only. We had our bags on push carts ready to go. Then without asking tried to charge me for 18 holes. I calmly tell him we will only be playing 9. As rude as can be he tells me that's not what it says on the tee sheet. Then asks me how I booked the tee time via phone or online. I told him over the phone and I told the person we will only be playing 9 holes. He then proceed to rip the receipt out of its holder as if I just cost more time. While this is happening hes tells the group to go ahead of us and pay later. (Group is a 100 handicap total) I have been golfing for over 25 years in 11 different states. I have never experienced anything like that in my life and for that reason I will never play this golf course again. I have never Yelp before in my life. I've been playing this course for about ten years, now... Ever since I moved six blocks away. The fact I only play it once or twice a season should tell you something. What I can tell you after my 16 or so rounds on this course... This is a fairly plush, flat, beginner course. Nothing wrong with any of that for a city course. My main gripe is how its managed. It is almost impossible to tee off before 2 p.m. and finish in under or even at four hours. There are hardly ANY out of bounds and losing a ball is pretty hard to do... Yet, every time I get to 4 1/2 hours of play, I'm usually on the 14th or 15th hole, which is baffling considering the layout. I'm often so aggravated by the slow play, I quit at the 4 1/2 mark. Actually, the layout is partially at fault. The first three holes always cause a backup, but once one finally gets some momentum going, we get to the 10th hole, which is one of the worst holes in the state as it backs everything up again. Why they don't make it a par 3 and the next hole a long par 5 defies common sense. My point is there is no call for having to wait 10-20 minutes between every shot. They either need to space out groups another two minutes, or get rangers who actually do something as it is usually one or two groups who muck the whole thing up. Seriously, this shouldn't be a five-hour plus course, and I think the number of rounds I've played are a fair and accurate sample. If you like this type of course, I'd instead recommend City Park, which about six miles west with the same skill level, and usually does come in at about four hours with way better views and less flat. read more

The course is in great shape and the pace of play on a Saturday morning was fabulous. The price, $31, is very fair. The city of Denver courses could learn a little from these Aurora courses, both as far as price and as far as general upkeep. read more

This course offers up a good value. Pretty low cost for a course that's in pretty good condition and has a really friendly and welcoming staff. Not much variety in terms of what you get from this course. Almost every hole is basically a straight hole with maybe a little bit of curve, trees on both sides, and a bunker or 2 up by the green. That's all it is so it might get a little old and repetitive if you were to play there every week. #10 is really the only exception to that description. Nothing really overly special about this place, but nothing that'll make you really unhappy or angry with it. read more

This was my first time golfing at Aurora Hills. The course is very open which makes it nice to keep track of your balls, if you like playing from other fairways like I do! There was a bit of a situation when I was there. My buddy and I got a bucket of range balls to warm up and we pulled the cart up to the range, right next to the cart of one of the workers there. We realize that at some courses they prefer that you don't park the carts right there so we asked the employee. He was a bit older and he said, "well I guess you can". It would've been pretty hard for him to tell us that it wasn't allowed when he had his own cart parked in the exact same spot that ours was. He pulled off and we hit a few balls, just for him to walk back over and explain that he "asked the pro" and was told that we had to move our cart. This wasn't the worst part. The worst part is that he proceeded to get into our cart and try to relocate it himself. Keep in mind that our cellphones, our clubs, our wallets, and most importantly OUR BEERS were in the cart. To me that is INSANE. Aside from the fact that he had his cart there as well, which makes this "rule" nuts, for him to physically get into our cart without our permission is laughable. My buddy runs over and actually says, "don't move our cart, we will just leave". We leave half the balls that we paid for, at the range, because it was close to our tee-time anyways. We had even communicated that it was close to our tee-time and we just wanted to hit a few before teeing off, but that wasn't enough for him. Had to DRIVE off in his cart to see if actual customers were allowed the same luxury that the employee had! oh brother! Other than this situation the course is OK. It isn't $50/each OK but still.
