I am a nearby resident of Aura at Midtown. They have a sprinkler system that has been running non-stop since at least Christmas morning...and this is two days later. Water is running like a stream down the street. I reported it to their "emergency number" and nothing happened. When you call the City of Phoenix Water Department they wash their hands of it since it's on private property. I've lived in a place where you can call the municiple water department regarding a water-waster. The city goes and inspects (asks for photos) and if they find a violation they demand the issue get fixed and there are possible fines. read more

AURA AT MIDTOWN IS UNSAFE FOR RESIDENTS AND YOUR VALUABLES ARE AT RISK OF THEFT. I hate giving negative reviews therefore i have provided a lengthy justification. I lived at Aura since October 2017 and have since physically moved out. I am a professional, licensed realtor and a real estate investor. Real estate IS my profession so there is substance in what i convey here. We moved to Aura between real estate investments. My husband is a physician. I share these details with readers so that it is understood that we are not posting without purpose. Peoples safety and there property is my concern. I encourage you to read my other reviews, they are thoughtful, respectful and honest. I encourage Yelpers to read ALL the other negative reviews about Aura, you will find a clear pattern for lack of concern for residents and failure to be transparent. Aura claims that they are not aware of safety issues related to loiterers and theft, this is disingenuous. They are aware of problems related to loitering and theft, they simply have chose not to share the information with their residents. Residents have the right to know about safety issues and events occurring in their apartment building. Furthermore, The leasing office has said that they are under no obligation to inform residents about safety concerns therefore i have taken on the responsibility to share facts, information and allow people to be informed. 1. There have been TWO incidents where homeless people have been found LIVING on the property. One person was found in a vacant apartment. Marcelo a previous employee and I had numerous conversations about this. A second person was found LIVING in the exercise room, Marcelo had to remove him off the premises. 2. It is a common occurrence that residents find loiterers sleeping in the laundry rooms. I have seen two leaving the laundry room and called 911 on one occasion. One other resident was approached by a man when it was raining requesting that she open up the laundry room for him. 3. The back alley parking spaces are unsafe. Half the lights are not in working order and have not been replaced. One evening i parked and nearly tripped over a man, my daughter grabbed to keep me from falling on him. It's so dark and he was all in black that it was difficult to see him. That was in December, it is March and no new light bulbs as of yet. The parking in the alleyway is unsafe. 4. The apartment backs up on a alley way, therefore there is a constant flow of loiterers rummaging in all the trash bins (approx 6 large dumpsters). This constant flow of loiterers is what makes the apartment susceptible to theft. One resident had his work tools stolen out of the back of his truck bed, another told me she had the window of her car broken and items stolen. 5. On one occasion i found a couple sitting on the back stairs ON the premises. When i shut the gate closed he jumped over the fence and INTO Aura building. They were driving around on a bike looking into apartments and parked cars.They both appeared to be impaired by drugs. I called 911. When i described my observations to the officer he deduced that they were scouting out apartments and cars for burglary. He asked that i encourage residents to call 911 so they can patrol often. I immediately shared my experience with Aura and they did not inform residents. 6. I finally gave our 30 day notice when an encampment with at least 8 homeless individuals moved in on the east side of the alley way on an empty lot. The alley way is unsafe with debris, bottles and people sleeping. Aura has willfully chosen to not inform residents of all facts related to incidents that have occurred ON premises. Signs were posted requesting residents to close gates until gates completely lock, yet the residents did not receive a clear understanding as to why closing the gates was wise. those signs went up, to help keep loiterers out who are sleeping or attempting to sleep in laundry rooms, in vacant apartments and on the premises. If you live at Aura i encourage you to dial 911 and make police reports when you witness homeless individuals on the premises or if you have been a victim of theft. that is the instruction the officer gave me when i dialed 911. If you are a resident at Aura, email and complain. The argument posed to me by the leasing office was that i was the only one "complaining". Your safety is of upmost importance, make sure the office and other employees understand this. Talk with other residents, share your experiences. He is prompt and helpful, and even takes a moment once in a while to pay attention to my puppy, who absolutely adores him. I think it is unfortunate that he doesn't have any helpers working with him. Do not rent here. The on-site management has high turnover for staff, which doesn't help when dealing with issues. Secondly, there was a serious roach issue that went on for months; the office personnel even admitting the chosen pest control company, Burns, couldn't seem to "get it under control." The laundry rooms are frequently dirty, and gates are chronically open or broken, allowing anyone from off the street to wander in. Advice; look elsewhere, or spend the extra money on a "luxury" apartment in the area so you don't have to deal with shared laundry areas, popcorn ceilings, plumbing that frequently backs up, having to email twice on the same issue to get a response, or as mentioned above- pest control issues. read more

The current management here is great. However the ownership of the building has been making some mistakes in my opinion. My number one problem is that since I renewed there has been a significant sway in my bill for rent. Most recently the ownership begin charging for common areas for electric, gas, and trash. Which is making my bills way up to $100. They say they've made it very clear in the lease but I don't recall it. And even if they did I've had to struggle the last two months to? Rental bill which should be a steady bill in my life. I like the building, and I like the leasing office. But I do not like having to wonder how much my bill will be every month. My mother has resided here at Midtown for about 4 years. I can say that when it comes to the maintenance man Bruce, I never have to worry about her anymore. He is so attentive and so carrying! He is the best maintenance man my mom had had since residing here! Anytime she needs him he comes over and does everything in his power to help her. What I love the most is he speaks with her so politely and let's her know everything that will be going on to fix anything in her home. Don't Do It, Keep Looking! When I initially moved into Aura I thought it was a fun cute place to live. As the months went by the neighborhood changed dramatically..If you want the short version I'll just go ahead and tell you right now that this place is a dump, it is unsafe and the property management refuses to take any responsibility for it. 1.The first detail that drives me crazy is that when I found out it was a gated community I felt safer...WRONG. The gate is never shut, people always leave it propped open or the gate SLAMS shut which screws up the lock and leaves it loose. Anyone can walk right in through any of the gates into the community, they might as well takes the gates off because they're not keeping anybody out and they're not keeping anybody inside the community safer. 2. A few months into living in my unit I noticed that the screen on my bedroom window that is exposed to the outside of the community was obviously pulled off (which leads me to believe someone was trying to break into my place through my bedroom window), I took a picture of it and emailed it to the manager and she never responded. 3. There have always been cockroaches on the property and in my unit but one time I opened my dishwasher and it was like a scene out of a movie...clearly one of the roaches had laid an egg that hatched because HUNDREDS of baby cockroaches came running out. GROSS 4. There are ALWAYS homeless people going through the large trash bins outside in the parking lot which is awkward when you're throwing something away and theres someone in there, or when you pass them while walking to your car or have to slow down to let them cross in front of your car when driving out. 5. The homeless have started camping outside of the alley in the vacant lot. They have set up an actual community with tents and occasionally campfires to keep warm. I have spoken to other people who live in Aura who have seen some of them fighting amongst each other or flipping people off as they drive by, it's very hostile. 6. I know people have found homeless people sleeping in our laundry room (which they shouldn't be able to get to, but since the gates don't lock they just walk right in) they have also been found sleeping in our "gym" which ALSO should be locked with a code but is almost always left propped open. Lastly, I know homeless people have been found trying to get into our storage units when it rains and even in people's cars. It's ridiculous! 7. In my previous comment I said "Gym" because it's literally just a treadmill and an elliptical machine...it's tiny - so don't cancel your gym membership. 8. I have heard of lots of people getting their cars broken into, and seen glass on the street. 9. As a woman I am afraid of parking in the back alley so I try to park up front when it's available but I still carry my pepper spray with me because either way it's always sketchy. 10. You would think being next to Safeway would be convenient because you could just walk over with a few groceries but I am too afraid to get mugged. 11. I had called about 6 months ago about my towel rack that fell in the bathroom and no one ever came to fix it...so I just had to put in my own. 12. I've heard theres a garden...but I've never seen it! All in all I would avoid this place. There are plenty of other options in the city for the same price without the fear factor everyday. read more

This place deserves a negative star. Truly. Lived here from 2015-2016 for a year while the place was a dump it was decently priced and was big in square feet. Needs remodeling though. The utilities where new but we had to pay extra for that. I lived in apt 13 F1 BEWARE all f1 units are by the empty lot next to the clarendon hotel. Keep in mind that lot is a hotspot for derelicts. My husband had his truck broken into THREE times. Plumbing is "vintage" a little too vintage. The persons pipe above us broke after they left for work so our bedroom was raining for a day. Thank god for renters insurance. Never saw the garden. The "gym" is a closet with an elliptical inside of it. My husband said he walked in on a couple having sex in the gym too. Real awkward. If you live by the pool all you will hear is people partying and getting drunk during the summer. ROACHES. There are lots of big roaches at night crawling around the sidewalks so be careful not to leave your door open! The laundry is one washer and one dryer per complex (I believe the complex building were broken into quads?). Anyway it was right next to the parking lot next to the F1 unit poorly lit room and the light would always creek at night it was so creepy. Not to mention the bums that are out and about at night. I was always afraid to go to my car alone or come home at night alone out of fear that I could be mugged. Never happened thank god. There was also an incident where there was a bum who broke into the storage space right outside our bedroom near the parking lot I guess they had been sleeping there so they put locks on it. Anyway this review is really for the F1 unit im sure my experience may have been better had I not lived right next to the derelict dumpster diving hotspot. Oh and my brother actually witnessed a bum fight one had a knife and the other had a huge rock. They were fighting over the lot/territory. I wonder who got the lot? read more

I give this place a 1 ONLY because Yelp won't let me put a zero. Let's start with the parking structure is beyond unsafe. You have constant bum traffic all day long looking in your cars digging in your trash & even sometimes in your gated court yards. If you wanna see the most bum traffic come drive by the alley around 7/8am & 6:30 pm and it's a guarantee you'll see them wandering around your self. It's the "hotspot" for crackheads. The trash is constantly over flown & all over the floor, along with tons of dirty beds & unwanted trashed furniture. The work on the apartments are cheap they fix what ever they need to just get by. You have bums sleeping along the walls or the apartments and sometimes in the laundry room when it's cold. I wish I never put any money into this place, a month into moving in I knew it was gonna be a long dreadful year of living here. We absolutely can't wait till the lease is up so we can move somewhere cleaner safer and more maintained. Don't do it keep looking there's better places out here. read more

I've lived in four different states and have dealt with many different management companies running apartments in diverse neighborhoods and not one has provided me with the assistance that Devon has. I moved into my apartment sight unseen because I needed something quick and was coming from out of state. I needed a great deal of hand holding to say the least but Devon was honest about everything that I would see once I arrive, she even sent me photos once the previous tenants moved out. My experience the past five months at Aura have not been 100% but I'm giving them 5 stars because no apartment complex is perfect. I live in apartments because I don't want to fix things when they break, and they will break. I feel like a lot of people's complaints come because they don't understand "Apartments Living" There is a certain level of patience required when living in such close quarters, people are not always going to get along or have the same level of pride in their homes - we must adjust. I hate seeing when people don't pick up their dog's mess too but all I can do is make sure the I do my duty and set a good example. I work in customer service and I understand how difficult (impossible) it is to keep everyone happy all of the time and for that I applaud Devon and the rest of the "Midtown" team. read more

Okay, so I signed a least and never ended up living here and this is why...I've debated writing this, but I feel like people deserve to know what they're in for with this complex. I signed in April for a lease July. I loved the model and the area looked well kept and clean. I came back in July excited to move in, provided a check for over 600 dollars before I was given my keys and before I had seen the apartment, and was extremely disappointed to find that my unit looked nothing like the model apartment I was shown once I walked through my front door. There was no knockout window in the kitchen, making the space feel way more enclosed, there was a lightbulb hanging from the ceiling with no fixture, the apartment hadn't been cleaned, there were dead bugs on the floor in the kitchen and the living room, the walls were uneven from many rounds of bad scaffolding, the wood on the windows were rotting, and the refrigerator had rust all along the inside and dents all along the outside. I later figured out I was given the wrong layout for my apartment, but since the management company had switched between the time I signed my lease and the time I got my keys, they told me they didn't KNOW what they had given me. I was told that they HADN'T SEEN the inside all of the apartments and the previous mangement hadn't left an accurate map of the apartments interiors and it was always a surprise as to what they were going to find when they walked in somewhere. My question is why on earth you would rent an apartment to someone based on a model unit when you don't even know if that's the layout you're renting out. The one thing positive thing I can say is that the new manager Destiny was very understanding and kind and gave almost all of my money back to me. I had to find a new place to live within a week because I couldn't be promised the next model available would be any better or different than the one I was given. I would avoid this place or MAKE SURE you ask to see your actual apartment before putting down a deposit. read more

We love living at Aura at Midtown. Me, my husband and our dog. They're pet friendly here - they even added a little gated dog park to one of the courtyards. The maintenance guy lives on site (he's our neighbor!) and is always around, responsive and such a nice person! We love the look of our place. Wood laminate floors and carpet in the bedrooms. We have gorgeous floor to ceiling windows in our living room and love our view - fireworks in the summer and rainy days in the winter. There are always parking spaces in back for us and they're covered. Everything is a little older, but it's well kept and we find it charming. We've lived here since early 2015 and there was no rent increase for us when we renewed - sweet! It's a great area, we love walking our dog around the block and I love being able to walk to Safeway/Starbucks. read more

Where do I start? I am just starting out the second year of my lease, and highly regretting having renewed it in the first place. I originally moved in December 2011, the unit I was told I was getting and shown, was not the unit I ended up with and when I received my keys I opened the door to an apartment that had not been cleaned after the last tenant. The previous tenant had left trash, belongings, filth and even moldy food in the fridge. Honestly, at that point I should have asked that they shredded my lease and looked elsewhere. They took three days to clean the apartment that they had received a month's notice I would be moving in to, and about three weeks of constant phone calls for basic maintenance requests - leaky faucets, a non-functional oven, screwed up carpet, broken windows with no screens, non-functioning heat, eventually non-functioning cooling, and a refrigerator that wouldn't close tightly. Many of those items to this day (January 2014) have not been addressed, and I am still constantly requesting maintenance work that never seems to get taken care of. There have been several (four I think?) management company changes in the year that I have lived here, the most recent to Alliance Residential, which I thought would mean positive change as they are such a large company and perhaps had better financial backing and organization than the last few companies the property owner used. Was I ever wrong! This newest management change has been by far the worst; I at least felt like the group immediately previous to them actually cared about the tenants and was reachable. Alliance has simply replaced warm bodies in the office and on the maintenance staff, and the staff really treats this like their job - not our home. Maintenance requests require angry emails in order to be addressed, sometimes my rent payment goes through their website and sometimes it doesn't - you can be sure though that I'll get hit with the late fees if it's not in by the first, the property is covered in animal feces from lazy dog owners and trash from the homeless people that seem to have free reign over the property, dogs running off leash and defecating on doorsteps, urinating all over the walkways with no one to clean it up, extraordinarily questionable neighbors who "take in homeless boys off the street', and are admittedly unemployed, drunk neighbors stumbling around the property on a regular basis (after coming home at 10am with their daily case of Milwaukee's Best), there is no security to speak of- even when complaints are made you are advised to make repeated police reports versus the management actually looking into constant issues, neighbors leave cat food everywhere to feed the feral cats that roam the neighborhood and are quickly multiplying because of this, and you'll be lucky to be able to use one of 2 washers and dryers for 25 units (and the homeless that come bathe in the sinks and use the units themselves). The units are hastily remodeled, so looking at them is nice, but living in them is another story. At least one of the pools has not been properly cleaned since Alliance took over in July. There has been sediment in there since monsoon season. Even the maintenance staff has gone as far as to say that the owner just doesn't want to put the money into his own property. Sadly, that's obvious. Overall, I would highly recommend against moving into this property. I only signed my lease again, as I intend to move out of state in December 2014 so the thought of moving into a new address for only a year seemed too much. Again, regretting that decision. If you rely on the website as a guide, you may think you are moving into a trendy central Phoenix property with hip, clean neighbors and maybe getting a community of people you are excited to live near or even become friends with. The reality is, this is quickly approaching Section 8 territory and the management doesn't necessarily care to change any of that. What you are actually getting are many filthy, loud neighbors who care even less about where they live than the property managers do. read more

I don't know why this place has bad reviews. Its an old apartment complex of course its gonna have a few minor issues, its old. I moved in here for the very fact its old, its got character and charm. Everything that has ever broken or needed to be fixed has been, the very day I ask for it to be. If you want a shiny brand new apt move into a shiny brand new apartment. The floor plans are a great deal for the price. Utilities are low. And I have never had a problem washing my clothes. You knew when you moved in it had laundry rooms, sometimes you gotta wait or learn to do your laundry at less busy times. Not hard at all. Devon in the office is awesome and she's a wonderful property manager. You people try running a apartment office and listen to people bitch at you all day long. Sadly my apartment complex was recently sold and the new management is horrible. During the first week the pool went green and was unusable for three days, grrrr. Now the laundry room in the yellow building has had a broken washing machine for two weeks! My partner and I have had numerous discussions with the leasing consultant who says she can't do anything. These are card machines and owned by another company. How come this was never an issue before? The machine looks like it overflowed and for two weeks nobody has mopped the floor and it smells! The leasing consultant stated they cannot mop as it is proof that machine is broken. What the heck, isn't the proof in the fact that, I don't know, the machine is broken! The maintenance man, who you never see but we always saw Jeff, can't even change the trash, my partner took it to the dumpster! We pay our rent on time, we are not noisy, we keep our apartment very clean all we want in return is the few amenities that are offered to be in working condition. There will be insects inside your apartment and they will do NOTHING to resolve the issue. The management will literally lie to your face every time you go into the office. NEVER take their word on anything! Get everything in writing I mean EVERYTHING! Please be cautious about leasing with these people!!!!!! They are scam artists and liars!!!! Aura is a great place to live. Each building has different amenities that all residents can enjoy. Pools, cornhole, dog park, garden, etc. Our apartment itself is charming and has amazing floor to ceiling windows. The neighborhood has lots of friendly people, we are walking distance to a grocery store, and pretty close to lots of great food. Great independent local stuff. We recently got new management and it seems they are very nice and proactive too. read more

Have been living at aura for almost three years now. There have been several changes in managers and through it all they have been fantastic. The current manager especially is kind, and all the staff are friendly and responsive. It is an older property, which means occasional repairs, but through it all they have done things correctly, and been very helpful. The staff has been extremely accommodating and all work requests have been responded to within hours. Those things coupled with great amentities inside and out make these apartments ideal! This is a horrible organization. If I could give no stars I would. We have tried to send them payment for rent multiple ways on multiple occasions. Even when they said we could pay by money order or certified check and it was in an official document, they still refused either. They will be reported in other ways as well. Horrible place. Have you noticed the only good reviews are from people who just moved in?? Just wait. I lived here for almost 2 years & so relieved to be out. Initially loved it but it went so far downhill. Sad, was such a cute boutique place. Don't let the fake smiles & cute vintage building with cheaply done 'remodels' fool you. *HUUUGE SEWER ROACHES will come into your apartment (like up your shower drain while you're showering or brushing teeth, nightmare style) & there's nothing mgmt can do bc these type of roaches live in the city pipes & sewers not the building, spraying your apartment doesn't help. *VERY UNSAFE now. The little locking gates do nothing to keep people out. More & more homeless people hanging around the parking lot so cars get broken into & laundry stolen frequently. There's a halfway house across the vacant lot on 3rd Ave, so there's scary people walking around the building at night or sleeping near the cars. Neighbor's unit got broken into by drunk people twice, mine got broken into once even upstairs. *OVERPRICED, SKETCHY & DIRTY. Aura raised rates far higher than everything comparable in the area so now desperate to fill all the resulting vacancies they started letting all kinds of shady people in. It started getting disgusting & downright ridiculous. Really loud and sketchy at night, cops always showing up, helicopter with searchlight constantly overhead, domestic violence disputes, broken bottles, cigarettes, loud parties & dog pee/poop in the stairways (walkways are filthy NEVER got cleaned the whole time I lived there even after reporting finding BLOOD on the stairs). Even accidentally walked in on people having sex in the little fitness center when I just wanted to go work out. You'll really feel like you can't touch anything our leave your home at night it's very uncomfortable. The pool is basically the only thing they clean. *YOU FOOT THE BILL FOR PLUMBING ISSUES. The old pipes are constantly breaking & flooding, you'll see the Alliance plumbing van there weekly. Plus every time they repair they have to flush the pipes & refill them, it's a TON of water. Tenants divvy up the water bill & there's no compensation it's just part of living at an old building, so you pay a lot for water. *STOLEN MAIL. Your mail/packages will get stolen if left outside or delivered to wrong unit. *GET IN LINE TO WAIT FOR DIRTY COMMUNITY LAUNDRY. Only 2 machines for a whole building so get in line to do laundry & expect neighbors to take your laundry out of machines. Also machines never get cleaned so they are musty & hairy from all your neighbors' dog beds, shoes, or you name it. *BAAAD MANAGEMENT. Shelton-Cook is C-Class for a reason. They keep firing and switching around incompetent staff & the latest manager Samantha will be nice to your face but is an unprofessional nightmare. You'll most often find her hiding around the corner of the office smoking, gossiping & on her phone. Don't expect any humanity, everything is very much by 'policy' and they use the excuse of Fair Housing where it doesn't apply, so they don't have to think or put in any effort. If on-site staff can't help you, Corporate is all but nonexistent and completely unresponsive. The only saving grace is the maintenance guy, Daniel. He's awesome. *YOU WILL BE TREATED TERRIBLY AT MOVE OUT! No matter if you're a good tenant who pays rent on time and follows the rules or not. They do not care. You must give 2 months notice to move out (which they do intentionally to make planning a move somewhere else excessively difficult) and they will NOT work with you under any circumstances even if they say they will. Don't have to so they won't. If you move out early they'll intentionally keep your unit vacant either out of laziness or since they have so many vacancies, so they can just charge you the full 60 days. You will have to insist on your move-out inspection or you won't get it, they'll just surprise you with a bill later. You also have to chase them down for your deposit refund/move-out statement since it gets "lost in the mail". And if you owe money after moving out, they WILL NOT do a payment plan with you, they'll send you straight to collections and ruin your credit/rental history plus charge a $500 "admin fee" which is not even in the lease. read more

I've lived in Aura for a few years now. It is centrally located and very convenient to many Mid-Town restaurants and activities. The Management company is very responsive to our needs and ensures a good quality of life for residents. We have a vey diverse resident pool and are very pet friendly!!! read more
