I stumbled upon Augustus Harris while in search of dinner on a busy weekend evening near Covent Garden. This restaurant takes reservations online, so I snagged one and headed over. At first, I found the menu a bit odd. I was expecting a more traditional Italian selection with pastas. Instead, Augustus Harris offers a selection of crostinis, bruschettes, cheese, salami, and small bites. But, if I expected a wider selection, what I enjoyed was terrific. The Anchovy and Butter Soldiers (small piece of bread with butter and anchovies) were salty and exploded with taste. And the Prosciutto bruschette with herbed Goat Cheese and fig jam was outstanding. Prices are reasonable for the quality and freshness of the food. The spot is quite small and romantic. It seats maybe ten people upstairs and a few more downstairs. A great place for a romantic bite or a visit before the theater. read more

By day it's an Italian imports/specialty goods shop with olive oil, wine, an array of dried meats, etc. By night it's a low-lit Venetian bacaro serving small plates of the products sold in the store. It's sort of like the Batman of the restaurant world. Albeit, a very mediocre one. We went Saturday night before heading off to see a West End show. It was busy, but not overly so. We were asked if we made a reservation. Well, no, because your website says you can only make bookings for 8 or more. Anyway... We were sat at the sexy copper bar, and then pretty much ignored for half-an-hour. I ordered a glass of the sparkling wine (prosecco the waitress called it, however, it's called something else on the menu), that is on tap. I figured, sparkling wine on tap, what's the worst that could happen? Well, it was very, very flat. And while I tried to flag someone down to order something else, I watched the bartender poor the dregs of a bottle of prosecco into a newly opened bottle and then recork it with one of those silicone-pump-things. Ew. All the while, the bartender was being dogged on by a woman, who I assume is the manager. Which was obviously helping the speed at which drinks were being made and poured. We received one plate of crostini we ordered, an excellent salame topped with a cornichon. We finished it, and an unsuspecting waiter asked if we would like to order more. We told him we had, at which point they seemed to realize the kitchen workers may have been sitting in the back watching paint dry --or perhaps doing something illicit, it's always hard to tell. I honestly don't know what the hold up was. It's not like anything on the menu has to be fired -- or even heated for that matter! The rest of the food came out rapid-fire and nearly everything was excellent. Even the butter they use is silky smooth and wonderfully sweet. The bread, however, was stale, like it had been cut several hours in advance. But I definitely give it three stars, because the product being use is obviously very high-quality; a sumptuous porchetta with taleggio, and and a nice stinky Gorgonzola with a lovely honey were two of the highlights. The honey was so good, I started dipping the stracciatella from another dish into it. I also had an excellent glass of Puglian red after the unfortunate sparking wine incident. The service was just sad, but I can't say it's the waitstaff's fault; it seems like they've really been given no direction. If they can iron that out, this might be a nice little addition to this Covent Garden enclave of pre- and post-theatre dining. For now, I think I'll visit during the daytime for ingredients and make the same things at home for much cheaper. read more

A gem in Covent Garden. We actually were trying to find a decent place to drink and we passed this by and the place looked really inviting and cozy. The staff were so sweet and helpful. We immediately got a table in the corner by the window and got a few cocktails and wine. Everything we ordered were really good. One of the staff even made us paper flowers. Very small. They do reserve tables. In the heart of the theater district. Can't comment on the full meal menu but I had the wine and hummus. The hummus was VERY good and from scratch. RECOMMENDED. There are about 8 tables down stairs as well. When you walk in your like... So this is a restaurant for 12 people... WHAT??? People were nice and my experience was good. Wow! What can I say....escaping a dreary, wet & miserable night in Covent Garden (a little stressed with Christmas shopping exploits) into the warm and mellow confines of Augustus Harris set the scene for a super night. The copper bar, wood finishes and low lighting are a great combination. The staff were welcoming and efficient, bellini's to kick things off were very well received! They were also very patient with us seeing as one of our party was severely delayed but eventually all parties were present and we could place our order.....or should I say orders, as we ended up ordering seconds of several dishes - they were that good! Compared to some places, the menu is not extensive, but when you do simple things this well - quite frankly there is no need for it to be, i think they've nailed it! I could live on the stracciatella alone until next Christmas and be a very happy bunny - delightfully creamy, and served with beautifully light focaccia, this was the first of the dishes we ordered a second round of. We ordered all of the crostini on the menu - the service was swift and discreet with the waiters knowledgeable about the dishes they were delivering which is always reassuring!! The Porchetta & Taleggio, along with the Capocollo with artichoke also made it for second rounds. My companions shared a bottle of the house red and gave it a big thumbs up, whilst I tried two more of the cocktails - the Basilico and the Rosmarino which I can't recommend highly enough. Having been to enough Christmas drinks events recently where cocktails seem to all be sickly sweet concoctions with unidentifiable contents, to have them created with not only ingredients that they clearly also use in the kitchen, but ones that can easily be recognised and enjoyed in a simple and refreshing manner was a joy. To round off the evening a couple of us naughtily opted for the panettone, which was served warm (perhaps toasted) with a beautiful brandy mascarpone - two of the guests tried to abstain - but both got stuck in once it arrived, unable to resist! We had a fabulous night, delicious food & drinks in a gorgeous setting and we will definitely be going back soon - be sure to give this place a go! read more
