Frankie Pace Park is a public park that opened in 2021 and is owned by the City of Pittsburgh. The…read morepark is a "cap" that covers part of Interstate 579 and reconnects the Hill District with the Business District, helping residents to commute to jobs. The park is 3 acres and contains pedestrian paths, bicycle paths, a bus stop, benches, grassy lawns, trees, rain gardens, steps, art, performance areas, etcetera. The park is named after Frankie Mae Pace (1905-1989), a female activist who fought against the Urban Redevelopment Authority's redevelopment of the Hill District in the 1950s onward. The redevelopment displaced thousands of Black and immigrant residents and disrupted their social and economic networks. Frankie Pace advocated for the residents' housing and education. A story wall showcases the life of Frankie Pace, and a second story wall showcases another prominent person of the Hill District, Martin Delany (1812-1885), who was an abolitionist, journalist, and educator. Furthermore, throughout the park, signs show "Keisha," an African American cartoon who guides visitors along the paths. For decades, this land was the location of the Civic Arena and then parking lots. Other, larger parking lots are currently still located farther into the Hill District and provide parking spaces for suburban commuters. I appreciate that Frankie Pace Park helps Hill District residents to walk or take the bus to other neighborhoods and also provides a convenient place for recreation. My visit was on a chilly, rainy weekend day, and I noticed only one other person walking along the paths. I hope that this park gets more use on sunny days and week days.

Flagstaff Hill is a really nice part of Schhenely Park. I…read morecame to go to the car show which was totally amazing. Flagstaff Hill was where all the parking was for the event. I parked in a very convenient spot and then there where buses to the event areas. Everything was well layed out and set up beautifully. This was such a great event can't wait till next year to go again. I know that Flagstaff Hill hosts many events throat the year. I will deftly be back again.

Grandview Park is a very cool place to hike - not only does it have some awesome Pittsburgh views…read morewith a beautiful, open, flat area featuring benches, picnic tables, porta-potties, trash cans, and even a working three-tier fountain for dogs and people alike, but it has a trail so forest-y that you will not believe how close it is to downtown. Grandview not only has the unique combination of city convenience and natural beauty, but the park hours are 6 AM to 11 PM which makes it a great spot for a first date. One thing to know is that while the main areas are accessible and enjoyable, the trail itself has certain parts where the branches, leaves, and vegetation grow very close to the path, so you may find yourself brushing through plants as you walk. One of the things on the path you may want to be careful about brushing up against are the several branches of what are called wineberry plants along the trail. They are beautiful and fun to spot, but be careful because the stems have thorns and they grow very close to the edges of the trail in some areas. Because the trail can get narrow in places, and it helps to be small and nimble because otherwise you will probably find yourself rubbing against these plants. There is also a hidden gem near the Grandview Park access road between Grandview Elementary and Emerald View Park where you can find two beautiful cypress trees. I have honestly never seen trees quite like these before. They look like what would happen if a regular tree had a soft and sweet little baby with a pine tree. They are unique, whimsical, and somehow both elegant and adorable at the same time. They are definitely worth taking a moment to appreciate when you are on this part of the trail. Another important thing to know is that there are some steep ledges on this trail which are no joke. You actually could get seriously hurt if you fell, so be mindful of where you are walking. Also, make sure you take this trail with someone you trust because, honestly, if someone wanted you to die, there are definitely places where they could make that happen on this trail.

There are many restaurants right outside of the park area, convenient to grab a bite and drinks. The baseball stadium is also right by the park and can be accessed as soon as you walk off of the bridge. We didn't see a playground on the trail, but the entire park can be a large place to play. There are kids play by the large running water fountain and in the river. Many dogs were spotted in the parks. Very dog friendly. Highly recommend to check out this place when in Pittsburgh, PA

I can imagine this waterfront used to be pretty rough, so it's pretty neat that they decided to make it a regionalish-feeling park, spruce it up, and get people walking down here. I expected it to feel much more unsafe than it did. I don't know Pittsburgh well enough to know how safe this park really is, but it felt completely safe walking around as an obvious tourist in broad daylight, so that's a good sign. The pavement of the path varies from very well maintained to broken up and muddied. When you're here, watch your step, and if you're riding a bike along the path, be very careful, especially in areas with puddles. You can get to most of the bridges across the Allegheny River from the south side, but it often (always?) requires you to go up ramps along Fort Duquesne Boulevard. I really like those bridges, so it's cool to be able to walk right up to and beneath all of them as you go.

And honestly, you can't talk about Settlers Cabin without mentioning the picnic groves. I swear, half of my summer weekends over the decades have been spent at a cookout, grad party, or other gatherings with friends at one of those pavilions, eating hot dogs and hamburgers. When my daughter was little I brought her there through her teenage years with her friends. Always a good spot to spend a hot summer day in Pittsburgh.
