Unlike many of its rivals however, Jackson's has the pedigree to boot too as it has recently been voted Best Chippy 2010 (although I'm not quite sure where). As you might expect with such a title, Jackson's offers very good fish and chips that is delicious and filling. Their fish is delightfully crispy and golden, whilst their chips are perfectly fluffy and just the right texture between dry and soggy. Their prices are fairly competitive for the area, meaning you can get fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a hot drink for less than four pounds, which is great value for money when you consider the quality of the food you're eating. If you're in the area definitely give them a try, whether you fancy a takeaway or a sit down meal.

Quite what this has to do with fish and chips or Ormskirk, I don't know. Perhaps the owners believe that Ormskirk is the perfect place to settle as it is hard to attack (despite it being at the bottom of a hill, making it the opposite of an acropolis really). Name issues aside, Acropolis is a quite large and very popular chippy on the outskirts of the main town centre. As the sign above the shop boasts, Acropolis is open all day, offering customers the chance to dine on their food no matter what time. They do shut at some point though, I'm sure. Their food is standard chippy fare - fish, sausages, pies, burgers - but all are made to a high standard and are available at fairly cheap prices. The shop's size means there is plenty of space in which customers can wait, not that you're ever waiting too long though as the service is attentive and efficient. So, if you're looking for some decent fish and chips, Acropolis is the place to go when in the area. However, if you're looking for a good place to hide from an attack on the town, I wouldn't use this acropolis.

It's not that the food is terrible and inedible; it's just that calling your shop 'Maghull's Premier Fish Bar' means the standards and expectations are already set very high, before you've even set foot inside. As the name suggest, Premier specialises in the usually chippy selection of fish, chips and pies, as well as Chinese meals, burgers and kebabs. I don't really like chippies that do kebabs and burgers as well though; I'm firmly of the opinion that chippies should do fish and chips and takeaways should do kebabs and pizzas. Fingers in too many pies, an' all that. The shop itself is fairly big and the staff there are pleasant enough, it's just not the best place in Maghull for fish and chips in my opinion.

With it being a seaside town (I'd describe it as Diet Blackpool), fish and chip shops are very, very common in Southport. There are a fair few in the town centre and it only gets worse as you head up towards the front. Some are okay, some are terrible and some, like Harpers, are very good. On the busy Eastbank Street, the takeaway section of Harpers at the front of the shop is quite small and cramped, meaning the busy lunchtime period results in a slightly squashed few minutes. However, the staff there are all very efficient so you're never normally waiting too long. If you're not in a rush, there is a restaurant part to Harpers to at the back of the shop, where you can sit down with your fish, chips and mushy peas and eat in relative peace as you wash it all down with a cup of tea. The food itself is probably the best in the area, with their chips being delightfully fluffy and their fish being crispy and full of flavour. Their prices are a bit expensive but competitive nonetheless, meaning Harpers is a good place to go for a bite to eat during lunchtime.

Donner or chicken, 'Hawaiian' (served with pineapple ring - exotic) or 'king' (served with an egg - regal) the kebabs and burgers are the reason to get takeaway from here. I also distinctly remember the owner, who always sported a cap and an absolutely excellent moustache (the skill of moustache grooming is a fine art). This establishment has since changed hands however and the change was not a particularly positive one in my opinion. The chips they do are average and the portions compared to their rivals are pretty small, plus they serve you chips in a little tray which kind of spoils the whole chips-wrapped-up-in-paper thing (it's just not the same when you have a tray supporting them, they should just slip everywhere as you struggle to eat them). They also do the usual Chinese dishes, burgers (which are pretty good, actually), kebabs and pizzas. I generally avoid getting things like kebabs and pizzas in chippies though, I feel that they are best left to proper kebab and pizza shops because when chippies have their fingers in too many pies, they usually end up doing everything a bit crap rather than excelling at a few things. I'm quite a fan of the fish tank in there though; thankfully, they don't put its contents in the deep fat fryer (far too small).

The food in Station Fish and Chips is nothing inventive or original; as the name suggests, they offer your favourite chippy treats, but all of it is made to a very high standard. The chips in particular there are beautifully fluffy and crunchy, just the right mix. The fish there is also of a particularly nice as it is deliciously thick and full of flavour. Station Fish and Chips is just one of many chippies in the area, but I would definitely recommend it as one of the best around.

However, this place seems to be doing okay in spite of it's location. As the previous reviewer said, I imagine the fact that it's stayed open so long has to do with the quality of the food. I mean, I guess you can't really use the word "quality" to describe fish and chips realistically, but you know what I mean. There are bad chips and there is bad fish. But not at Station Fish & Chips. (Actually, I think all fish is bad. But that's another story!) You won't get charged an arm and a leg here either. And they offer some variety in the items you can order as sides/main meals. Staff are very friendly and conversational.
