I had a cartridge lead come off my tonearm, not once but twice. Michael and his tech helped me and fixed it both times quickly. It's not easy to find anyone who can or will work on a turntable. Owner said he would have no problem fixing tape player and charged $40 bench fee. I took it apart before I brought it to him and made sure all the motors still worked. I cleaned out the deteriorated belts. I just needed someone to order the right size drive belts and install them. He made it sound like it was no problem. A few days go by and he called me up to say could not fix it. Big waste of time. read more

Nice variety of vintage audio gear. Nice guy. Had my SX-1250 repaired here a couple weeks ago. Fixed speaker channels, cleaned knobs and switches, solder joints and I think a couple capacitors. I really like this place, in fact, I love this place. They used to be over on East Ave. It was 2004 and I bought a Philips GA 212 turntable from Goodwill. I hooked it into my receiver and I couldn't figure out why it was playing so quietly. So I looked in the Yellow Pages and saw this place. I carried my turntable inside and asked them if they could help me, they said no problem, just give us a few minutes. I walked around the shop and grew mesmerized with all the silver faced gear. Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, I knew I came to the right place. One of the guys called me over and told me that my turntable was A-OK! The problem? My receiver didn't have a phono stage, so it wasn't able to amplify the signal. DUH! They didn't charge me for the service but encouraged me to find a receiver with a phono stage. Well, they got me hooked on vintage audio. Seven years later and I'm rocking a restored McIntosh MC2105 power amp, along with Klipsch, SAE, AR, and Pioneer equipment. (And I still have that Philips TT) If anything, these guys introduced me to an entire world of listening pleasure. I am really thankful a business like this exists in Rochester; vintage equipment sales and service. In all my travels, I have not found a shop to compare it to! Don't bother buying any of that new junk from the big box stores, go here first. read more

I have a Pioneer surround sound model usx524 it keeps shutting off after 5 seconds, I took it to them for a diagnostic test and a quote on the repairs this was in August 2023, one month later I had to call them to see what they found wrong, I was told it was two resisters and they were on order I asked for a quote on the price of repairs and he did not have one yet, he never stayed in touch with me I called him every month, I finally got a phone call from them at the end of November 2023, three months later they told me it was finished and it took several other parts but the cost for me to pick it up was $290, minus the $40 I gave him for the diagnostic test I asked him who gave the permission to repair it without giving the quote for the full price of repairs he repaired it without my consent or agreement for a quote that I never received the told me he would keep it and I would still owe him $50 I could clearly see I was getting ripped off he had my equipment for 3 months and repaired it without my consent he is very slow and unprofessional it's a $100 used receiver that was my favorite and only one I had I am a disabled Veteran that he doesn't honor veterans I definitely don't recommend this establishment to anyone the parts were inexpensive and I can see $100 but because I had to wait 3 months and never receiving a phone call for a update on the situation and I never got my quote he should freely return my equipment in working order I honestly can not believe this situation he purposely put a high price on it so he could add it to his collection read more

I honestly do not know where to start with my horrible experience. First, like most reviews, most 3+ stars reviews deal with purchases while all the single star reviews are about repairs. Keep in mind that this is a cash only business so be very cautious and for god sake do not shop here unless you actually know something about audio equipment. First, I took in my McIntosh C-26 Pre-Amp for the owner to make a simple repair on the Tape1 button. He asked for a $40.00 deposit, and this is typical of any audio repair shop. On this same visit I left him with my Yammaha CD player (older model) that just needed the belt replaced. ($40.00) deposit for it too. A week later, he calls me and leaves a voice mail saying all the repairs were made not giving me a price and I not time to call back , pop in and ask about the bill and repairs. he presents me with a bill for $203.00. AND THIS WAS ON TOP OF THE DEPOSIT. The repair ticket was not itemized and he told me. "I replaced some bulbs, and did some saurding ." and I said "For $200.00!!" and proceeded to get louder as he tried to justify these ridiculous charges. He wouldn't give me an hourly rate or why these repairs were so much. I trusted this guy to at least be honest if wouldn't give me a ball park figure. And with the type of equipment I have, he is sort of the only game in town and he knows it. Somewhere in there, the CD player was $80.00 to replace a belt. Oh of course I had to go get the cash. It was like he was holding my equipment ransom or something to see if I would even pay it. Well of course I am because last time I checked a pre-amp like mine was going for $1,200.00 on the internet. Unlike one reviewer who said he wasn't reporting this "huckester" to the BBB, you will be assured that I plan to. Keep in mind that I also purchased a turntable from him but more on that later. Unbelievably horrible. I called asking for an estimate for a receiver repair, gave the guy on the phone an overview of the problem (Onkyo, sound not getting to speakers, no other issues with the receiver that I know of). He was extremely rude not once, but twice. When I asked for a ballpark figure, which should be no big deal at a place that deals in repairs and estimates, instead of giving me any sort of range (e.g. "$100/hr" or "$50-250 for a repair") he instead responded, very snidely, "So you want me to give you an estimate for a receiver I'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE?" I told him, "Nope, not any more.." and hung up. Really shocking behavior from someone in a service industry, sad. Could not believe how rude the guy was. I was polite, tried to explain clearly and quickly, and he was.. ugh. read more

Fixed my vintage unit once, charged $250. It worked three days, then had the same problem it had initially. Ibrought it back. Fixed it again, charged me more. Worked for a day. Brought it back. Then waited three months. Never got one call as to the status. I had to chase to owner to find out what was happening. Owner constantly tried to chisel me out of more money, making promises he couldn't keep. In the end I was charged more than $200 for a broken stereo that had the same problem (dead channel) as when I brought it in. Abysmally poor customer service, and incompetent repair service. On Sept. 15, 2017 I purchased a used tape deck (refurbished) from Michael J. Fenton for $140. He gave me no refund option, nor guaranteed the product function at all. After 5 weeks and 6 days, the machine abruptly stopped working. There had been a pattern of only intermittent extremely light use. The eject button jammed. I couldn't remove a tape cassette (only the third ever placed in the machine). I phoned Audio Sound and Fenton asked for $30 additional to just examine the broken tape deck. He told me that any repair would be above that cost, and that salvaging the tape lodged inside would also be additional. Well, assuming that would be $50 or more, that's 40% of the cost to me in the first place. That's prohibitively expensive and unfair to this customer. read more

This is the only time I've ever felt compelled enough to poorly rate a business. I'll bullet point my experience with this place as concisely as possible. I own a vintage turntable that needed to be fixed. - I needed to make 7 round trips to the shop. - my turntable is still not fixed. - When I called initially, I asked, but was not given an estimate. - I was charged $260 and asked to pay with cash. I was given no receipt. When I asked for one, he wrote "turntable" on a piece of memo paper and handed it to me. - The owner is a snob and makes me feel very uncomfortable to do business with. - The owner accused me of intentionally stretching the belt on my turntable, and that was his reason for it not being fixed properly. - After the owner was through swearing up and down that there was nothing wrong with the turntable, I still couldn't play a record all the way through successfully. I had another reputable engineer inspect it, and he slid the housing off of the end of the connector to find wires that hadn't even been soldered together. When I called the owner to tell him this, he said, "bring it back and I'll fix it." I would not trust this shop's work to change a light bulb. Even after giving them 7 chances to do so. I contemplated calling the BBB and NY tax evasion office to file a complaint. I may still do that. Stay away from this place. read more
