I feel Atria Collinwood fools elderly people. When on tour, was shown a beautiful, brand newly updated apt. Given a firm rent price of $2795.00. I said I will take it. The next day sales director called n said the firm price was not approved. It's all yours for $3295.00!! What a scam!!!!!!! Also I wondered if it's a ligit apartment. I never thought I would be giving a great rating to a place that I have had to place my mother, worrying about if they will 'love' and care for her like family. In addition to 3 square meals, activities, transportation to Dr. appointments, they have maintainance techs for electrical, plumbing, or any other request. Onsite nurses and housekeeping. The staff is 100 percent available for anything you need. They will even solve interpersonal issues between residents. My mother has gone from severely depressed, living alone, poor eating and immobile, to fresh faced, chatty, engaging and active. The move to Atria has been a life-saver. I was concerned about previous reviews, but after talking to the staff, things were cleared up. Besides, the proof is in the pudding. I highly recommend stopping by to chat with, Helen. Atria started off as a great facility, but after several management changes the care for my father went downhill. The Director was verbally abusive to him (which was overheard when my sister was on the phone with him and the Director was unaware). The Director has also lied to us (documented in writing) about incidents that allegedly occurred. When we asked for additional information, the required incident report was not on file; and when we asked the Executive Director about the incident, she shared a completely different account of what had happened, as she was present and observed. The Director has threatened my Dad on multiple occasions about getting kicked out of the facility for needing too much care, to the point where my Dad would need help but he was too afraid to call for support because she had him believing that if he asked for help he would have to move out. When the Director's behavior was elevated to the Executive Director, the ED shared it was completely inappropriate for the Director to make those comments, yet they continued. In my Dad's care plan, it includes assistance with showering to ensure he's staying clean and avoiding infections, yet my Dad went weeks without a shower and no one from Atria communicated that to me. It wasn't until I saw him and noticed how filthy he was, and inquired about the date of his last shower did I find out they were not happening as scheduled. We are moving him out due to a severe lack of trust based on the communication (both inaccuracies as well as lack of communication). I worry about the care and treatment of other residents. read more

This place is the worst ever. My parents were there and I knew from second 1 is was a terrible choice. Not only is the food inedible, the service in the restaurant is sooooo slow and they run out of everything. They bamboozle you into thinking you need more services than you do and no surprise, you get charged for it. The attending staff members are ok but the executive management is so lacking, it shows everywhere. The facility desperately needs modernizing. When you walk in, you feel like you have just entered an old fashion nursing home. It's gross. There's a ton of choice in the San Diego / this is not the right place!!! read more

last November this review would be 5 stars most definitely. The staff was so friendly and caring. they would say hi and greet my friend and I as we walked down the hall. The attention to residents was really wonderful. Everyone was on their game. Turn over was low which I liked. Those with cognitive issues need consistency and Atria had it. Employees wore badges indicating how long they had been employed there. It was very impressive. I dined with my friend in the cafeteria and wow... sandwiches were piled high, the salads were large, food was very good, portions were adequate, and service was quick and very friendly. Over the past few months, everyone disappeared!! The sweet nurses, med-techs, front staff, servers, etc are gone. I dined with my friend the other day. We sat there for 20 minutes while some new young staff wandered around and refolded napkins. Tables were dirty and the dining area was full. I observed many residents looking around for service. the only consistent person and the only one who works his butt off is David and he deserves huge recognition. He is still an extremely nice, pleasant, and attentive server. All the other familiar faces are gone. so service is way down and the food... sad. There is obviously a new chef. Portions are small, food does not have the great appearance it once did, the sandwiches we ordered were very thin ...it is very disappointing. I spoke with several residents who voiced the same opinions. The previous chef helped us repair a shower. I had no clue where he actually worked. Turned out he was the chef and on his way home, but he was so nice he assisted us. Wow! The person who helped me decide on Atria was the sweetest lady, Sandra Dea. She was always friendly and returned my calls promptly. suddenly she is gone. That is upsetting. I have no clue who the new resident rep is. Housekeeping is less and less efficient. A trashcan in my friend's room contained trash I had put in there 2 months ago - no lie. I bought her items for the bathroom (e.g., soap dispenser) and the boxes were in the trash. They still remain as does other trash in her room. Recently, due to recent medical issues, she needed dinner and breakfast in her room. Orders were for her to stay in bed. She received dinner just fine. I arrived the next morning. The dinner tray and dishes were still in her room AND no one arrived as I and the doctors had asked, and she had walked down to breakfast. Luckily she was healing quickly but they knew she had to lie in bed 24 hours and have assistance to the bathroom. Ambiance is crap now. Staff use to stop and chat. They assisted residents and it was very obvious they really loved their jobs. Recently, two staff walked by and chatted and checked their phones and said nothing when my friend said "hi". What happened to Atria?? I was so in love with the place and felt my friend was in a friendly, caring, well established community. In 2014 when I moved her in, a staff member said they are all like family and it was very true. Now? not at all. I am so disappointed. I have taken care of my friend in some really bad times and finally moved her into, what I thought, was a great residence with low turn over and a family feel. It is not anymore. It saddens me. I had spent hours and hours taking time off work and driving around on weekends checking out assisted living facilities. I have an emotional and legal responsibility to my friend. Now, I feel I am going to have to start the entire process again. She has moderate dementia. Consistent and structured settings are critical. Now I feel the need to move her. the move may not help her: new staff, new room, etc. I do not want to do that but when I moved her in at the end of 2014 = 10 stars... now I can barely give 2. I wish all the previous staff was there. The atmosphere was soo soo wonderful I loved just hanging out. When i left my friend on Saturday, I actually cried. I miss that old staff so very much. Now, I am just upset and angry. We just moved my family member out of Atria because he needed more skilled nursing care, but we liked Atria a lot. They really try hard, and the residents seem happy. They go out of their way to put on special events every holiday, and invite the whole family to participate. The Thanksgiving and Christmas buffets were outstanding! The dining room is well run. The staff is attentive. Residents can get food at any time during the day,and if they don't like the entrees', can order practically anything else. They can even have a glass of wine! We had our family member in another facility before Atria, and even though they gave excellent care, everyone had to eat at the same time, and he wasn't happy with that. Watching the residents, I think the way the dining room is run contributes the most in keeping them happy. The front desk staff person is the one to go to when you need something; Everything revolves around them, and they know who and how to pass on your request. They are all great, and so patient! The med techs aren't trained to be nurses, but they are asked to do a lot. I'm a RN, and I give them a lot of credit. They do a good job. All in all, I recommend Atria for their family atmosphere and nice staff. read more

To be fair I must state that this took place about 8 years ago. Yelp was not around then and I took the advice of some senior living advisor about Collwood for my 80+ year old mother. Mom was in great shape brain-wise, but was finding it hard to get around after a stroke. We put her in Collwood Assisted living. It was awful. The staff would torture her and not bring her things unless she said thank you first. It was just terrible. In the last 8 years I hope things have changed but I still feel guilty I put my Mom here. We did end up moving her 3 months later because she was so unhappy, but I regret that she had only a few months left and so many of those last months were spent being tortured by angry black assistants at this place. Gosh, descrimination doesn't only go one way. It is so ironic that my Mom worked in poor black areas of San Diego for years as a school nurse and drove kids to eye appointments and did all kinds of good stuff to help and then she ended up getting treated like this by other black folks. It ended ok. Mom was a great lady and did not hold any grudges. I just wanted to post to give the heads up if you're thinking of putting a loved one here. Just moved my mother inlaw a month ago. The staff is real friendly. The meals are fantasic, says mom inlaw. This is one of the lower price facilities around. It's a smaller place. This helps mom as she isn't the most friendly and open mom around. She likes to keep to herself. The dinning room is nice and open with lots of other friendly elderly people. read more

After calling this place a happy home of 7 years my dear friend who has ALS fell and broke his leg while attempting to get out of bed. He temporarily needed more care until he got better. Atria told him to hurry up and get better and a room would be waiting upon his healing. Due to his dreadful ALS disease he cannot walk or talk and communicates by a writing board and a smile. After 4 months in rehab and loving support of his friends back at Atria he was denied a room by management. Not because they didn't have one but the new director (who never met him) indicated that he was rude to the staff and looking at a nasty picture on the library computer (which happened to be a email someone sent him of a lady in a bikini). He also accidentally rammed into the bookcase with his scooter which he paid to fix. All of this was undocumented of course. Nothing in his file to document her findings. We begged and pleaded to let him return and told her that his family would talk to him and buy him a personal computer and not use the library. The new directors only comment was she didn't think he would be good for the community. No prior notice or anything to indicate our family that he couldn't come back. We had to scramble and find another place for him which isn't easy on his limited income. Bottom line is that after doing further research our best guess as to why they really wouldn't let him return to his home was because of money. He was paying what he could afford and they could get more money for his room. They didn't give a crap about this being his home of 7 years that he had friends and close ties there. It's about the almighty dollar. Everyone I talked to there agrees and misses him. How can a man that can't talk be that rude to the staff? I'm sure being unable to talk he sometimes got frustrated and we get that. But what lacked here was lack of compassion. We have found a place but it is much more costly and he misses his friends and a place he called home for over 7 years. If he was that horrible why did they not let us know and we could have talked to him. My advise is not to leave because you won't be able to come back. We say shame on Atria for not at least giving him another chance and for handling this so poorly. read more

If you are looking for an assisting living facility, look no further! Atria Collwood has the best care facility that you can find. The Manager there, Victor Cruz, is such a wonderful man. He has created a very loving, caring, friendly, and always smiling staff. My mother has been there for a year and a half and she has had the best care ever, and she has been in several assisted living facilities. This one is by far the BEST. Very clean, never any bad orders, the food is great, with so many things for the residents to do. I just can't say enough good things about the facility, My Mom loves it there. read more

In June, my mom moved to San Diego somewhat abruptly, and after a few months of living on her own, we realized she needed to be in a community with more support than she was getting living by herself. We found Atria Collwood as they are close to my home, and got in contact with their Sales Director, Shari, who was extremely kind and compassionate from the start. Shari was able to guide us in the difficult process of finding a good community for my mom to live in, and she was very receptive to my mom's wants and needs. Shari was very flexible with her schedule and gave my mom and I not one, but two showings; part in-person, and part virtual due to the Covid-19 restrictions in place right now. Shari was very easy-going throughout the entire process and we never felt pressured to make a decision. Although my mom ended up choosing another community to live in, I have no doubt that Atria would have been able to take her of all of her wants and need. Atria Collwood is under investigation by the State of California Community Care licensing regarding their actions to prevent a current (June 2018) outbreak of scabies. They are under a case management plan with licensing to address the outbreak, which, according to the investigator I spoke with, is supposed to include education for residents, staff, and visitors regarding scabies. My 93-year-old mother is one of the people who got scabies while living here. Also, this facility was cited by licensing, in late June, based on my complaint, for giving my mother the wrong dose of a medication ordered by her physician. I have since filed another complaint as I discovered a week ago that my mother had been given less than the prescribed dose of her most important medication for nearly 90 days. My Mom has been a resident at Atria Collwood for seven years. Before coming to Atria she had lived in the same house for over 50 years and did not want to leave. When we first took her to see Atria Collwood she said it was "too fancy" for her and she would not consider living there. But, she was not able to live alone and over her objections we picked a room and moved her in. Within 2 weeks she had made friends among the other residents and was telling us how much she loved the care givers. Within a couple of months she was calling Atria "home". Mom has been safe, comfortable, and happy at Atria Collwood. The care givers create a wonderful nurturing atmosphere. Scotty, Karen, David, Luz, and my personal favorite, Brenda--they are all wonderful. read more

We started three years ago at Atria with high hopes, but ended recently with mixed feelings. The staff there is so nice but we had to do the best thing for our 91-year-old mother, so we moved her to what we hope will be a better facility. Atria did just a terrible job of managing her incontinence. Her room reeked of urine and we could not get them to do anything about it. For instance, we bought her a new mattress, but were dismayed when the staff would not consistently put the water-proof protector on it when they changed the sheets. So the new one also became soiled and the smell was terrible. We insisted Atria buy her a new one since it was their fault, and still we would find her bed newly made and the mattress protector folded neatly on the chair. So very frustrating. I do believe the management meant well, but they were poor communicators with us and did not train the staff to meet my mother's need. If we had not been on their case a LOT I believe they would not have dealt with the problem at all. It is their business, after all, to maintain sanitary healthy conditions for those that are dependent on them. Other than this important issue I had pretty positive feelings about the place and the very friendly staff. At her new place we and management have a very specific plan to deal with incontinence, and we plan to meet often to review her progress. read more

* the rooms are smaller than Atria Encinitas, but I like the common areas & 24 hour food/snacks much better! My 5 stars goes primarily to the Executive Director - Meg Franz. During the Summer of 2016, we had a cousin fall ill with several medical issues. After being in & out of hospitals, she required placement at an Assisted Living at the age of 57. We scrambled like crazy to find a safe place for her to stay near some of her doctors. (We live in North County.) From the tour, to move-in, to daily and weekly changes, Meg has been AMAZING!!! She has been genuinely kind and extremely compassionate to our cousin. Despite the fact that our cousin had severe depression from her medical challenges (and a sudden change from a 5 bedroom home in Point Loma to moving into an Assisted Living Studio), it was Meg and the staff that shined at Atria. They are always happy and really get to know the residents. Regardless of whether you see a Nurse, a cook, a maintenance person or a housekeeper - everyone is really warm and friendly. Unfortunately, at the beginning of January 2017, we have to move our cousin to a memory care facility. She does not want to leave Atria! She knows that they show her a special warmth and compassion. While we know it's best to move her, we will truly miss the comfort of having Meg and her staff care for our cousin. Strong leadership is the difference between an ok facility and a wonderful and warm community. Thank you, Meg, for being a strong leader! - Studio = 4 stars...small but functional. - Food = ? The folks at Atria Collwood are simply amazing. I had to move my mom into assisted living at the beginning of July, as she is increasingly unable to take care of her own affairs due to early stages of dementia. Natasha first showed us around and she has been supportive, sensitive, astute, and thorough in helping us through the stages of moving mom in. We owe her a great debt. "Scotty" at the receptionist post is a breath of fresh air and provides empathy, humor, smiles, and a close, caring attitude toward mom's affairs. All the nurses and other staff are wonderful.
