My mother Audrey has been a resident at Coronado Retirement Village, in the memory care program, for one and a half years. Prior to this, she had lived in Iowa in a senior community. My family and I were frustrated having her living such a great distance from us, we missed her, and were concerned that managing health care issues and her general well being would be challenging, If she continued to live in Iowa. So in spite of being intimidated by the sheer logistics involved in moving her out of state, we hoped to find some way to make it happen! Very fortunately for us, a health care adviser highly recommended Coronado Retirement Village. I meet with the director, Liz; she was very knowledgeable and friendly. She told me they had helped other resident at CRV successfully make the transition from out of state and she shared with me the insights others had gained by the experience - so beneficial! Liz was able to lift a lot of the burden of the move for us. She did a great job coordinating all the records between facilities, so the first day mom arrived at CRV, everything was completely up to speed - it seemed seamless. Liz and the welcoming staff, had my mom's beautiful room set up for her and she was able to settle right in! From the first day my mom arrived and consistently since, the memory care staff has been very kind and compassionate to my mother, they are very responsive to her needs and all the other residents' needs too! Their ability to watch over everyone and always be patient and create a happy atmosphere is inspiring to me. I'm so grateful for the peace of mind they give me and my family and for always giving us updates on how she's doing. I think it's so nice that when they dress my mom in the morning that her clothes are always so nicely coordinated, clean and they even match her jewelry (which she loves!) to her outfit. It's a very clean environment. You always see housekeeping staff at work. Also they just recently had an artist paint lovely mural on the walls in memory care. Mom enjoys the food and it's a healthy variety of the food groups. The kitchen staff is friendly and on holidays they will have special festive dining. For a small fee, families can attend - we have really enjoyed that - delicious! The med techs are all real professionals. They all have been very competent in their responsibilities of managing my mother medicines and answering my questions. They are always keeping a health watch for any changes. The activities staff here is so great! They really add the extra sparkle to CRV - they are the fun ambassadors! The staff is always going out of their way to involve my mom. They are creative in engaging the residents in activities! Whether it's the every Friday Happy Hour, with live entertainment and hors d'oeuvres, the fireside chats at the beautiful Marriott Hotel, backyard BBQ's on the newly remolded outdoor patio and garden, that overlooks Tidelands Park or arranging church services in their main living room, they've always got something going! The location is really awesome! Just a short wheelchair stroll away we can go right across the street to my mother's medical clinic and Sharp Hospital. Also just across the street on the bayside, the Marriott has beautiful ponds where several flamingo and other interesting birds are kept for the hotel guests to enjoy, but mom gets to enjoy them too : ). My father refused to leave San Diego, even after his health deteriorated to the point that he required assisted living. I live and work in Seattle. I dreaded leaving him somewhere that neglected him. When I was told I needed to move him from rehab to assisted living, my heart sank. I was referred to Coronado Retirement Village by a local organization called A Place for Mom. I walked in and was greeted by the biggest heart. I walked around and knew my Dad would love it: sparkling clean, all smiling staff and reasonably content tenants, a lovely dining room with huge windows, and a beautiful large outdoor area that overlooks the bay. They were at the ready to accommodate his vegan diet. My Dad was upset with me for not moving him back to his bachelor pad. He told me he'd give it one day and then he'd start looking for an apartment. When my Dad arrived, a variety of clinical and non-clinical staff-- all committed to ensuring he's comfortable and to assure him that his needs will be met--came by to settle him in and then to check on him every half hour. Within ONE HOUR, my Dad started talking about how he liked this place. ONE HOUR. The first day the chef came by to chat to Dad about food. My Dad was over the moon. Every month I would stop by for a week or so and I'd hear stories from the devoted staff. Dad was asked every day about joining group activities and was escorted outside every day to sit in the sun amongst the birds of paradise if he wanted to go. He loved that outdoor area. When I think about who I'm most grateful to though, it's Liz, the administrator. She manages all day-to-day operations. She reminded me that she had a business to run and that timely payment is what keeps the place humming for everyone. At the same time, I knew I could go to her, speak from my heart, and be heard and respected. She shared my tears and she understood how heartbreaking it was to leave him each month. She assured me he's in good hands. She referred me to resources, rallied internal staff and coordinated external partners to meet my requests on my Dad's behalf, followed up on any minor issues or requests immediately, and personally saw to it that my Dad had the best experience possibly. Every month I visited for a week or so. Every time my Dad would say to me, "I love it here." Every time he said that I felt lighter. As I saw it, I left my Dad in Liz's capable hands. I kept my job because of Liz. I slept because of Liz. I can sleep now because of Liz. It's encouraged to balance these reviews out with some area of improvement. It's hard to think of it as important in the big picture but here it goes--and I'll add that this appears to be a problem in every facility. If there were one thing I would have improved, it would be the process for laundering and returning clothes. My father always had freshly laundered clothes but he never seemed to keep his own socks or shirts or trousers long. He sometimes wore other people's clothes without knowing it or caring but I knew. He would have cared had he noticed. It would be great if Coronado could create a better laundering process so people's clothes consistently returned to them. Clothing is connected to identity. Thank you thank you--a thousand times thank you to the owners and operators of Coronado Retirement Village. You made the end of my Dad's life a dream as well as his only real experience of retirement. read more

Over the past 5 years, I have had several patients and friends with varied experiences at this facility. But since the change in ownership over a year ago, I am sufficiently impressed with what the Coronado Retirement Village has become that I wanted you to know. The only other review here describing a single visit experience in my opinion represents a gross misrepresentation of today's patient experience at this facility. I am a personal family physician with three of my patients currently living there. In a typical month I could make two to four visits there. When I visit, I am acutely aware of the facility and residents' experience both in common areas and in private residences. Always looking out for my patients, I understanding their living environment is integrally connected to health outcomes and longevity. I have in my years of visiting this facility never seen a resident left alone in a state of discomfort or crying. In fact I have seen the staff at the CRV go out of their way for the residents here. My 89 year old patient woke recently with what I believed over the phone to be a urinary infection. To confirm the diagnosis I need a urine analysis but I was not available to see her till the afternoon. When informed of her discomfort and my dilemma, the manager offered to help. A staff member was sent to walk across the street to the Coronado hospital laboratory, to bring back a urine specimen cup, and then to take back the specimen for analysis. As a result, I was able to make a diagnose and initiate the treatment before earlier limiting my patient's suffering and potential risk. One other resident was feeling weak and dizzy. She had fallen once but was unable to connect with her doctor. When her daughter called me to help, I went to visit. I noticed the blood pressure was too low and presumed this was due to her overmedication. After removing one of her medications, I really needed a way to monitor the blood pressures over several hours. Yet again the staff at the CRV came through for us. They had a staff member trained to check her BP and report back to me. This enabled me to make further adjustments quickly and efficiently without the need of a visit. I made one more medication adjustment and to this day the resident has not fallen again. The owners are now offering blood pressure monitoring services to other residents on certain medications or ongoing medication adjustments. This sort of out-of-the-box thinking and willingness to go beyond for their residents is what makes the staff at Coronado Retirement Village so special. The recently remodeled facilities are worth mentioning too. Of course the beautiful location in Coronado overlooking the bay, park, and bridge is second to none. But this location is also ideal because it is situated walking distance from the acute care hospital, physicians' office building, pharmacy, and a rehabilitation hospital. Without reservation today I recommend Coronado Retirement Village to all my patients considering moving to assisted living. read more

Near Death Neglect: Dear Yelp Community, I am writing this review with a heavy heart and an urgent need to warn others about the appalling neglect and deliberate concealment of critical health conditions that occurred at Coronado Retirement Village. As a concerned and deeply disappointed family member, I feel compelled to share our traumatic experience, hoping to spare other families from enduring the same pain and suffering. To give you a clear picture of the severity of the situation, my father, a resident at Coronado Retirement Village, recently had to be hospitalized due to Urosepsis--an infection of the urinary tract that spread to his bloodstream. The fact that this life-threatening condition even developed is a direct result of the facility's shocking negligence and disregard for their residents' well-being. First and foremost, it is inconceivable that Coronado Retirement Village failed to provide the necessary care and attention that my father, a vulnerable individual, deserved. Their incompetence in basic healthcare protocols is simply unforgivable. Instead of safeguarding his health, they allowed his condition to deteriorate to a critical state, requiring immediate hospitalization. Even more distressing is the fact that Coronado Retirement Village chose to keep my father's deteriorating health a secret from two of his three children, including myself. This is an unforgivable act of deception and demonstrates a complete lack of transparency and professionalism. We entrusted them with our father's care, expecting open communication and trust, only to discover that they intentionally hid vital information about his life-threatening condition from us. As family members, we have a right to be fully informed about our loved one's well-being, especially in critical situations. Coronado Retirement Village's decision to withhold this information is not only morally reprehensible but also a breach of trust that cannot be overlooked. It is essential for the Yelp community to be aware of the dangers and shortcomings of Coronado Retirement Village. No family should have to endure the anguish we experienced due to their gross negligence and deliberate concealment of vital health information. Moreover, I urge anyone considering this facility to think twice before making such a consequential decision. Our family's devastating experience is a testament to the fact that Coronado Retirement Village cannot be trusted to provide adequate care and, more importantly, to keep families informed about their loved one's health status. In conclusion, I implore you, fellow Yelp users, to take this warning seriously and consider alternative options for your loved ones' care. Wow I was shocked to read the bad reviews about CRV. But then again I guess because of these reviews things have really changed. My father has been at Coronado Retirement Village since mid February,2013. Our family could not be happier and I am even thinking about adding the facility to my will. The staff is great and caring all the caregivers go out of their way to help and are very caring. Liz Reyes the Director help me with transferring my dad from another facility and she did all the work, all I did was wheel my dad into his room. I will say that because everything else is sooo good it takes the emphasis off the food which leaves some room for improvement. But as long as my dad gets his ice cream at dinner he is very happy. The girls at the front desk are very nice and get your messages to your loved ones and vice versa. Down to maintenance of the facility and even the rooms. They have cleaned my dad's carpet 4 times this year just to keep it fresh. Activities are great but it would be nice if the City of Coronado and its organizations would do more out reach and getting involved and include our elderly from the CRV and invite them to activities in the city and volunteer to help with the chili cook off, the Luau, the 4th of July barbecue, Halloween and many other activities held at the CRV. It can be overwhelming for the staff to try to entertain everyone but they do their best. I have seen Sacred Heart School come by. But the schools and churches could do more by coming by to read to the residents or do plays and even come by at Christmas and sing.My top two events have been the Halloween party and the Luau. This is how our elderly should be treated is with respect and activities so their remaining days are full of memories and fun. This is a great facility and I will shout it from the mountain top. But as the name says it is Coronado Retirement Village and Coronado needs to get involved. I insist for the people to come by now and see what a change has been made!! My mother will be coming to join my dad soon just because she has fun when we go visit because all the caregivers know her as well as the residents. read more

Yelp removed my review from last year and has left only negative reviews of CRV. I do not understand Yelp's miserable intent to make sure CRV has only negative reviews. ------------------- These trash ratings are so far from my experience with Coronado Retirement Village, they must be coming from fired employees or people with a really angry life, they do not reflect the excellent care my mother has received in the six months she's been at CRV. Mom moved to CRV in February 2013, I see her regularly there, at all times of the day and night, and frequently interact with the staff and management. Every single CRV person I've ever encountered, from the orderlies cleaning mom's room, to the maintenance folks, to the director, have been kind, considerate, compassionate and competent. They have gone far out of their way to make sure mom is comfortable, clean and safe at all hours. They call me with concerns, when her medication supply is low or when she is just having a hard time as she settles into her new life there. I have watched the staff interact with many, many residents there and have never seen anything except competent, compassionate and professional care rendered. Their medications team is superb, in my experience, and they have mom's doctor's complete confidence. CRV is very clean, keeps a close eye on mom, has tons of activities onsite for the residents, offers rides to doctor's appointments, conducts outings around Coronado and the cost for care there is pretty reasonable compared to other facilities. It's in a totally beautiful location and across the street from the Rees-Steeley hospital! What more can you want for your loved ones? These other sad reviewers clearly don't have any of _their_ family living there or they would be grateful that there is such a high quality assisted living facility available in Coronado. read more

I have recently started volunteering with the Activity's Department at Coronado Retirement Village in December 2013. I have seen all sides and aspects of this building both inside and out and I have to say I am highly impressed by the compassion and love that is shared through-out the building. The bus driver Irie, has been transporting the residents at that building for over 12 years. He is like a permanent fixture their at CRV. All of the residents adore him and rely on him in more than just a transporter type of way. They talk with him on our field trips as if he is one of their oldest confidantes. The Activity's Director Vet, is another loving character straight out of a adventurous novel book. The Activities she plans for these residents consist of Belly Dancing Dinners at Zorba's, Water Dunk Tanks at Summer Festivals and even Lucky Lion Dancers for this past Chinese New Years. As a young male, I am almost blown away that they have more of a social life than a man in his 30's. Not only have I seen such an outstanding performance in CRV's Activities, I am also impressed by the level of care from the Care Givers, Dietary Staff, Medical Team and Administration Staff. I have seen staff go out of their way to help a resident with their day to day life issues or even to chill out and watch a tv show with them in their room. All of CRV seems to go beyond the call of duty. I am happy to say that I am still currently volunteering there and even though this facility has nothing to do with my current occupation, I will still continue to lend a helping hand, because I believe CRV truly gets the meaning of life: "paying it forward." read more

Our dearest friend has been living at Coronado Retirement Village (CRV) for two years this July. Everyone at CRV has treated him with the highest level of respect as a member of their assisted living community. He will be 91years old next month with dementia when the sun goes down. They check on him many, many times a day (and night) as he moves about their beautiful location and ensure that he receives his medications at the right times of the day. He sits on the patio enjoying the incredible view of the bay and Coronado Bridge every day. We feel he is living in the best place on earth - he has assisted living staff that support him in a very personal way; the Coronado Hospital is literally across the small street in case of emergency; he has healthy meals three times a day; they ensure that he has clean hygiene; they plan activities to keep him alert; and they host parties for families on holidays so that everyone can enjoy him in his assisted living arrangement. The cost is affordable - and as a veteran, he has additional income from the VA to help him live in assisted living. I cannot emphasize enough the professionalism and kindness of the staff and their manager, Liz Reyes, in guiding us in his living choices and maintaining the vital aspect of a "community". We feel that everyone at CRV is on the "same page" when it comes to taking care of our friend - they work so well as a team of diverse individuals. Thank you... thank you... thank you... to everyone at Coronado Retirement Village. We really do not know what we would have done for our dear friend of 45 years if we had not met you! read more

My love one lived at Coronado Retirement Village for nearly one year. Making the decision to move a loved one into an assisted living facility could be one of the most difficult and complex decisions you can make. It certainly was incredibly hard for me, and for my loved one. Fortunately, my loved one was not only able to help in studying the pros and cons, but was able to give a thumbs-up assessment to eventually go forward with the move. Like real estate decisions, we placed a great deal of weight on location, and better locations than Coronado would be tough to find. Coronado Retirement Village (CRV) is superbly located on the Island, immediately off the Bridge, just across the street from the outstanding Sharp Coronado Hospital, and next door to a first rate Sharp-run skilled nursing facility. The CRV ownership and management have placed a great emphasis on their building and grounds, which are very well cared for, up-to-date, and agreeable. Safety and cleanliness were continually important to them, but became central and imperative with COVID-19. The wellbeing of the residents and staff stays at the top of all their decisions. As a final point, there are a number of CRV staff members from across disciplines that I could perhaps single out as being consistently excellent, and caring, but I won't do that for fear of forgetfully not including one of those deserving "angels". read more

My grandfather has been a resident at Coronado Retirement Village for a couple of years now. Every time I come to visit, he tells me how much he loves being there. The location is so convenient because there is a hospital and his doctor's office right across from the community. My grandpa loves the view of the Coronado bridge directly from his room! The cost of living in this community is reasonable considering the beautiful location and A+ service. The community's rehab service center has done wonders for my grandpa's balance issues. From the time he moved into the facility, he has now been able to stand up on his own and walk around without any assistance. The dietary staff is friendly and provides delicious healthy meals all day long and they never forget to serve his favorite ice cream. He enjoys the outdoor cook-outs in the beautiful courtyard. Grandpa loves the Happy Hour every Friday, where all the residents get together for dancing, music, food, and entertainment. The activity staff also goes out of their way to personally come to his room and remind him of the daily activities. The management is extremely friendly and caring. Anytime my father leaves a message for the administrator, he always receives a prompt response and the matters are resolved immediately. We are so glad to have found this place for my grandpa where he is so well taken care of. read more

Coronado Retirement Village is a true gem amongst senior living communities. The location is idyllic, with beautiful views of the bay and world-famous Coronado bridge. One block from the ocean, the community is also conveniently located near the main road and important medical services. Rooms are large and bright with high ceilings, giving a sense of being outside. A lovely courtyard hosts regular barbecues on warm spring and summer days (of which there are plenty in San Diego!), and there is a packed schedule of onsite entertainment, outings and fitness classes. The new "Gentle Fitness and Rehab Gym" is a great addition to the community, proving useful for increased mobility, strength, and overall health. Another quality of this community is the variety of living services offered - assisted living, memory care, and a transitional care program called "Autumn Care" for those with higher care needs or who may be experiencing memory loss and early dementia. This is a special community in a fantastic location offered at a reasonable rate. I recommend speaking with Carrie and scheduling a visit for yourself; she is wonderful! read more

After researching and touring numerous facilities in San Diego & the surrounding area, my family decided to choose Coronado Retirement Village for our Mother. She has resided at CRV for nearly six years & we couldn't be more pleased with our choice. The location, quality of care, value & professional staff highly influenced our decision. Liz Reyes, the Director consistently strives to maintain CRV's status as the best of the best. We are grateful to her for her professionalism & dedication in providing a warm, family environment for the residents. CRV provides a multitude of activities & outings in which our Mom can choose to participate. There are a variety of arts & crafts, games, parties, exercise classes, weekly outings & many more activities, too numerous to mention. The staff is top notch & works tirelessly to provide a caring, cheerful, "home away from home" atmosphere. The pictures do a great job of hiding the fact that this building is old and run down. Aside from the medical staff, the management is mostly incompetent and dishonest. HUGE RED FLAG: Family is not allowed to have nanny cams in the rooms of their loved ones. Why not? Are they trying to hide the fact that there is a massive problem with theft at this facility? I think so. To cover their ass and hide the fact that they hire thieves, they offer lock boxes for valuables. But, that doesn't stop people from going in my mother's room, using her toilet, taking her clothes, and most recently, STOLE THE STICKER FROM MY MOTHER'S VEHICLE REGISTRATION. My mother has reported the theft of many things since she's been there the last year from jewelry, to clothes, to her vehicle registration sticker. This place is entirely WAY over priced for the service, food, activities, and care provided. I wonder if this review will even be published? read more

I can not say enough WONDERFUL things about Coronado Retirement Village and their staff!!!! My uncle has been staying there and he has a lot of needs. The staff has been so wonderful and caring. Every need has been taken care of. Every issue that comes up has been dealt with. He needs a large variety of medications and they manage it all. They are professional and pay attention to the details. He quickly felt at home and fit right into at the facility. He has made so many friends and I feel so thankful and confident in their competence and capabilities. I can say with confidence that they will take care of your family member and you can rest at night KNOWING that they will be in great hands!! I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend the Coronado Retirement Village with my highest recommendations!!! Thank you Liz Reyes. I am active military on Coronado Island. Since Coronado Retirement Village is so close to my base, I tend to volunteer sometimes on military days. I come in, in my uniform and shake hands with all of the veterans whom have fought for our country and deserve the highest forms of respect. It seems as if the Activity's Department really goes out of their way to make sure all of the residents have fun and are honored for being such great patrons to this country we love. The residents seemed to have a blast and the bbq party they had out in the courtyard was both fun and the food was delicious! My Dad was in assisted living at CRV for 18 months. We had moved him from the east coast to be closer to family, so there was an initial concern about his adjustment. Everyone there made him feel so welcome and comfortable from the very beginning! The care he needed (which increased pretty rapidly over the months) was given with grace and cheerfulness. Liz Reyes, the director, strives to make residents feel like family and is readily available for any questions or concerns. She is a gem. The care providers were helpful and respectful, the food and dining room servers very good. The entire staff, whether activities directors, front desk and office etc. are warm caring people who take pride in their job. I highly recommend this place if your loved one needs more care than you can provide and you want a smaller facility in a beautiful setting. read more

I'm a 31 year resident of Coronado and we brought my Dad to Coronado in 2001. When he turned 85 we knew it was time to find a retirement living situation. My father has been at the Coronado Retirement Village for seven years and it has been a wonderful home for him. Close to family but provides him with independence. He is across the street from the Sharp Coronado Hospital. Lovely owners and staff who care about him and my family. He has made many friendships with residents and their families and the caring staff. Great activities and attention to his needs. The final years have been good for my Dad at the CRV and tomorrow he'll celebrate his 92nd birthday. Thank you Coronado Retirement Village for you loving care of Eugene Gabriel. The staff members at Coronado Retirement Village are extremely responsive to the needs of the residents. Staff members are attentive, patient, well trained and are ready to respond quickly in an emergency. In addition, staff communicate with family members to ensure our father is cared for and that his physical, social and mental needs are met. We are grateful for the careful medical attention provided and for frequent communication. Communication is key especially during this difficult time: Covid-19 sheltering situation. The staff members of Coronado Retirement Village work hard to ensure family members are able to visit virtually and at a "socially safe distance." All in all, we are extremely satisfied with the support provided at Coronado Retirement Village for a family member in need of Secure Memory Unit care. read more

My 92 year old mother has been a happy resident in the memory care unit at Coronado Retirement Village for nearly a decade. She's in San Diego and I'm in Boston. She has a form of dementia that manifests as short term memory loss and needs the care and attention of the type given at CRV. The director, Liz, is always available and has worked with me to get my mother through several difficult health issues, including a major surgery a couple years ago. The staff has also engaged my mother in CRV's variety of social activities which adds to the quality of her life. The people at CRV are not only treat my mother like family. I know that to be true, because my mother says so!!! Everyone at CRV has the gratitude of a grateful son for giving my mother the skilled (and sensitive) care that I couldn't possibly match. read more
