I see mixed reviews for Athens, which is curious to me since we always have a great experience here. Its one of those reliable Greek-American diners w a little of everything on the menu. This review covers a couple visits since this is one of our fav breakfast spots, kinda all we come for. Lately I been into the breakfast skillets, they are bomb. The Greek Gyro skillet is outstanding. The Philly cheesesteak skillet is a goodie too. And the standard breakfasts are always great. Another thing that stands out for us is the service. Servers are so pleasant and attentive here, all seem to be older more experienced servers that actually give a crap about and you and your meal. It's actually what pulls us back in even tho it's over 5 miles away and there are other good options closer. These small places with big menus usually don't crush it on every menu item, but the breakfast and service here is very solid. We love Athens. read more

I came in after 11 and was pleased to see that they served breakfast late, perhaps even all day. I had the chicken souvlaki breakfast, and I will give it a hard-earned "thumbs up". The chicken souvlaki here is quite good. It's very juicy and has a thick, peppery flavor. Having good chicken souvlaki is the gold standard marking of a great Greek diner in my humble opinion. The home-fries left a little bit to be desired, as they weren't tremendously flavorful, but they were homemade, and that in and of itself is commendable. There is a small side parking lot but the closest spots are right in front. The problem is you can't park right in front without doing a considerable amount of sidewalk driving. As you can imagine, a diner such as this attracts old ladies with walkers like a dead body attracts flies. Be careful not to run over too many old ladies on the sidewalk when vying for a spot closest to the door. read more

We went there this morning and were seated promptly. That's when it all ends. Our waitress was more into socializing than taking care of her customers. From the time we got seated until we left, she socialized 90% of the time. My juice came 1st, and we were told it would be a few mins. while a new pot of decafe brewed. 25 mins later, still no coffee. On one of her few times, she came to our table, we asked her where our coffee was, "its coming", yeah, so is Christmas! 30 mins, in, we call her over and asked where our food was. Nothing special : eggs, meat, home fries and toast. They are backed up in the kitchen. Really, so why did 5 tables that came in after us got their food and now their check and your 3 tables are still waiting for our food? Her excuse was that they are busy and/or messed our order up in the kitchen. Again, really??? since none of your 3 tables got their food? Maybe if you did more waitressing and checking the food at the kitchen, your customer's would not be complaining. We asked to see the manage and was told she is working the cook line. I said not my problem and want to see the manager. She sends over another waitress who has no idea what's going on! We explain the problem and then asked for our check for the 2 coffees and 1 juice so we can leave. She goes & miraculously comes back with our food!! She apologizes and walks away. She came back 15 mins. later to see how everything was...the so called home fries were so loaded with paprika and onions and what little potatoes there was, were 3 inch ovals and hard as a hockey puck. She offered to get us some more but at this point we just wanted to get out of there! Funny how after we were leaving, our original waitress is seating customers and telling them they are backed up in the kitchen and there is a 25 - 30 min. wait! They just lost 2 customers and by the way we were treated, they don't care! read more

I really loved this spot. We got seated quickly and our waitress was super friendly and even told us what NOT to get, which we appreciated. I got the "Big Breakfast" which was true to its name and a great price for the enormous portion. We also tried the souvlaki wrap and open version. Both were right on the mark. The lemon soup was exactly what we craved and so too was the French toast. If you're in Cheektowaga, this is a reliably good spot to grab a bite! Definitely recommend. I love visiting this little Greek diner every time I go to get my car fixed, as my mechanic's across the street. It's always bumpin', it seems, mostly with older folks and their families. Because I usually roll solo to my mechanic's place, I grab a barstool-style seat in the back, facing the kitchen, right in front of the TV, which usually has something silly on (i.e. America's Funniest Home Videos or bad reality TV). Not because I enjoy watching kittens falling into hampers or hot-dog eating contests, but because the color commentary on the programs from the waitresses is actually way more entertaining than the shows. Ditto for the company I keep at the diner's "bar." Usually truckers or other lonely-old-man types, they're always good about passing the ketchup and making polite conversation. But they'll also leave me alone to read the paper, which is one of my favorite Athens rituals. Also, the prices here cannot be beat. You can get two eggs, homefries and toast for $2.99 on a weekday, and $3.99 on weekends. That makes my whole breakfast cheaper than a regular latte in downtown Buffalo, and I love Athens for it! read more

Came here for lunch because I was craving a good Greek souvlaki. I ordered the open souvlaki with spanakopita. Both were mediocre but nice portion size. The Greek dressing tasted like a bottled Greek dressing but still good. My aunt ordered the open chicken souvlaki and she said the chicken was one of the best she has ever had. My two boys got the chicken nuggets and they each got a nice portion of them with a side. Our waitress was lovely and we did not feel rushed at all which during these times is rare. Felt very good with Covid regulations. Social distancing wasn't forced and all staff were wearing masks. I will definitely be back. read more

The dinner entree was disappointing. The fries were pretty bland and without seasoning. Looked like frozen bagged fries from the supermarket and thrown in the oven. Times are tough, though. The disappointment peaked with the vegetables... Again, supermarket bagged frozen veggies. Nothing on them. Steak itself was actually pretty good. Asked for a medium rare and it was in between medium rare and medium. Dinner roll was good too. I have concerns about the coffee creamer left on tables as they were clearly expired and chunky. I have only came here for breakfast.. and its always great food and excellent service. I love that Im able to switch up my meals and still be satisfied with my meal. We ordered two chicken Souvlaki dinners and an order of spanakopita to go. The food was made pretty fast, about 20 minuets. The downside on the experience is they forgot to make the spanakopita and we didn't realize until we got back home. Because we paid for it through doordash, we went back to get it. After 15 minutes we were exited to finally get home to eat when we realize they forgot our pitas! Hahahaha. Honest mistake , but definitely annoying. Amazing Baklava!!! It is perfect. Sweet without being too sweet, a nice cinnamon taste and the phyllo dough so flakey and crispy. This is literally the best pastry/ dessert that I've ever eaten. Now that I have had the Chicken Souvlaki dinner at Athens I can say it IS better than Alton's....the chicken was juicy, tender and flavorful. They didn't skimp on anything ( especially the feta which Alton's does!!) and the dill sauce is delish. I generally don't like Greek dressing because it's heavy on the oregano and I'm not a fan of salad dressings in general...however I did try a little of theirs and it was decent, more like a lighter taste ( which I dig)than most other strong Greek dressings. Came here recently when visiting my family back home in WNY. The place was nice and clean, everyone was friendly and attentive. Their portions are huge! Be prepared, you get what ya pay for! I ordered this big breakfast, same as one other person in the party. Ours took up like the whole table. We joked that they either need smaller plates or bigger tables. This business continues to fail. It just gets worse and worse. Kitchen staff is slow. They care more about the carry out orders than the people sitting in the dining room. 1/2 the wait staff spend more time socializing then they do working. The owner from what we hear is an ass to work for which may explain why they can't keep staff. We had been going here for years and continues to get worse. I think we have finally hit the last straw. We will drive the extra 5min and go to Altons or Wherle. Prices are better and so is the food quality to be honest. We primarily went here because it's close but just not worth it anymore. Was so excited to see Avgolmono on the menu -- and it did NOT disappoint. It was delicious. I would return just for that. We had the spinach pie swirl, which was also SUPER tasty. If I had had just these two things, this would have an additional star. VERY good! Athens was recommended to me not only by our friend who lives in Buffalo, but also by my airplane seat mate on the flight into BUF. It has a nice atmosphere and location, too! I also had the Pierogis which were okay. I had a weird experience in which I had the cheese one (Farmer's Cheese) and the potato and cheddar -- the taste was good, but I got two super sharp hard edged bone fragments that were like pebbles. It hurt my teeth and put me off. Our server was cranky -- and surprisingly scoldy (she made a judge-y comment about me being on my phone -- when she brought the soup to me, my husband said, "She's been really excited about trying this" and she said, "She seems more excited about her phone.") We are on VACATION. I was going through photos to put on Instagram. She also pretty much ignored me regarding the pebbly fragments. Today was my first time here for breakfast. The service was very friendly but the food was nothing to scream about. I had French toast and it was just "ok." I also ordered turkey bacon but I didn't care for it at all. It was super limp - perhaps I'm the only person who likes turkey bacon with a bit of crunch to it. And maybe I'm crazy but the orange juice tasted like tang. It's hard to screw up scrambled eggs, in fact I know an 8 year old who can make them better! Runny, undercooked, gross. Sent them back, new batch was just slightly better but not edible. The waffle tasted awful, the store mixes are better. Not even the coffee is good. My friend ordered "healthy French toast breakfast", which was 2 pieces of thin store bought wheat bread and a dole fruit cup for $6.50. Less than stellar. The "hostess" sported a tacky nose ring that makes the appetite fade a bit. Most of the staff seems disinterested at best. It's one of those places where the server never comes back to ask how things are, it's like she knows it's crappy so why ask? Seriously, how does this place stay in business? Why didn't I know about Athens long ago? I have ordered breakfast from here a few times through Skip the Dishes. Everything we've tried has been delicious. I can't enough of the blueberry French toast and the deep fried homefries. Plus, they give you so much food. It was enough for breakfast and lunch. Try the bacon and eggs with toast as a fan favorite but if you like to try new things they have an abundance of things on the menu (picture of it next time I go). One of the first places we tried in Buffalo it says Greek on the building but less than half the menu was Greek food. We tried it and were not impressed with the flavor but the serving was plentiful. Man, I used to be a regular here! I've eating numerous breakfasts and dinners due to it being right around the corner from where I live. This is pretty much run of the mill comfort food that you KNOW is bad for you. Their $5 and $8 dinners are pretty hard to beat in terms of price (enough food for 2 people, not to mention usually multiple courses) but the quality is well.. let's not ask about quality, right? Their breakfast items are pretty good though, and cheap to boot. If all you're looking for is eggs, toast, bacon/sausage, and potatoes, look no further. Not sure why some people had a bad experience here. I've eaten here more times than I can count and have never had a bad breakfast. Service is usually also very attentive so if something doesn't strike your fancy, you can always send stuff back (I've done this for fries as it's come back sort of limp before). Would I recommend this place? Mehhhhhhh.... not generally, but I will recommend the breakfast as stated above (usually, that's less than $5 so you really can't go wrong) and the avgolemono. Messed up our most recent order, including giving the wrong size subs, which wouldn't even be that big of a deal, but when I called to ask for a gift card for reimbursement or some other way to make it right, they wouldn't admit to making ANY mistakes whatsoever, even though the order was all in writing. I recommended this place to some family and friends because I enjoyed my chicken souvlaki dinner I have ordered through door dash, the food was very good and a nice size portion. about a week later my niece and I were together and she called and placed an order for pickup, she stated that she was allergic to green peppers and please make sure they did not put any on her chicken souvlaki salad and no tomatos either. When she went to pick up her order she looked inside the container and seen there were tomatos on the salad, she told the waitress that she ordered no tomatoes or green peppers, the waitress took the container in the back pulled the tomatos off and gave it back to her, my niece asked if she could have another salad made because she didn't want to take a chance of some still remaining. She was told no because the kitchen was closing and there wasn't enough time. It was 2:35 and they closed at 3 pm, the place was still full of people eating, they had time to remake her food correctly. They overcharged her and told her the prices went up and did not give her a reciept. When she got home and started eating her salad, she had an allergic reaction, green peppers were also in the salad, she had to use her epipen. She took pictures of the remaining salad with the peppers in it and called the restaurant, of course by now they were closed so she was not able to speak to the owner/manager and was told that they would have the manager call her the next day, after waiting a few days and calling several times, still unable to speak with the owner, she went there. The owner was VERY rude and was laughing about it making excuses about having different cooks and orders get screwed up, my niece told her she had an allergic reaction and had to use her epipen and said she could have died, The owner replied "PEOPLE DIE EVERYDAY". Shocked by that response and her rudeness my niece said she was calling her lawyer, and the owner's reply was give me his name I will call him. I am so sorry I recommended this place to her and others, despite the food being good that I had, customer service is far more important and I can not order from here again. This is a very good restaurant! We were seated right away. The waitress was so nice and bubbly! She was having full conversations with us and the costumers around us. The food and drinks came very quickly! I ordered a Philly cheesesteak. I really like the cheese and meat on the bread, but not so much the green peppers. I have been here before; and maybe I liked the experience - maybe I didn't. It doesn't matter now, because safely I can say I LOVE IT! For starters our server was literally THE "ray of sunshine" as told in The BN. She was friendly, personable, accommodating and funny. Apparently she only works on Mondays, so... the best day to go is a Monday. I had the Turkey Rice Soup to start, and it was a tad too salty - but not bad at all - I ate it. I ordered a Farmers Cheese Pierogi - which was large and great tasting (though I might suggest some salt on the onion sautés). My main entree was Cabbage Rolls, Stuffed Cabbage, Golabki, or Pigs in a Blanket if you will. They were very big; you get served two and I had to take one home. The sauce was perfect, and not too runny. My choice of potato was Potato Salad (which was over-seasoned) and corn was my vegetable. There was a garlic roll as well. My sister enjoyed her "breakfast for dinner selection" of Corned Beef Hash and Eggs, however, the potatoes were kind of "off" - I could not make out the spice that was creating the taste. She really liked the hash. My sisters friend picked the restaurant for our monthly dine outing - because she liked the Chicken Souvlaki Salad. This time she got the dinner and she really enjoyed it. I'd have liked to have some dessert, but I was stuffed. I highly recommend the restaurant, and on any day of the week you can enjoy that.
