The salon was recommended by a friend who has her hair done by Joey. I have long thick curly hair and not easy to style. Joey did an absolutely outstanding job. I will definitely be using him from now on. My prior hair stylist who had been doing my hair since 1976 retired and I was frantically trying to find a good stylist. I can't say enough about this salon. I went here for the first time last week seeking a pretty significant change with my hair. I showed Karen two pictures of a cut and a color. And she nailed it perfectly!!! I absolutely love everything she did!!! And have gotten great compliments on it as well. I can't thank her enough. It is a very busy place with a lot of staff who go above and beyond to make you comfortable. The staff worked like a well oiled machine. Very satisfied with Karen and staff. Everyone (clients) looked fantastic when they left. I've had some horrible experiences in the past so I was very reluctant to try anything new. I am so grateful I did here! Over priced for eh, so so service. Had a bridal trial updo done there and had a non bridal party person accompany me to also get an updo. They charged both of us $95. Which is an already absurd number, even for a bride but for someone who was coming in just for a regular updo and was non bridal? Seriously? The going rate in NJ is $65, $75 at best. MAYBE in NYC you would pay that price but not in a small town in Jersey. Absurd. My updo was ok. She used a curling iron to curl my whole head instead of setting my hair in rollers, which I thought was odd. I wanted a poof on top of my head so my tiara wouldn't hide all of my hair and the poof wasn't big enough. I even told her that I wanted it bigger and instead of taking it out and making it bigger she said, oh we'll use a bumpet when you come in on your wedding day. A bumpet? Really? Why couldn't she just do it then and show me that she was capable of doing what I asked? Either way, it fell out within an hour of me leaving there. Same for the person who came with me. They actually colored and washed her hair before doing her updo, again which I have never heard of. Everyone knows that your hair works best with a style when semi dirty - dirty. Not squeaky clean. Her updo was falling out while the girl still had her in the chair. They offer you free wine, lemonade and kurig kcup coffee. I personally would rather they not have little silly things like that so that my bill could be lower. I also was not impressed with the over all staff of this place. Front desk was very snotty, stylists seemed disinterested in conversation with the clients in their chairs. Eh, I'd rather not pay that kind of money to get service like that. My advise, do your research. There isn't much in this area but Morristown is only 15 minutes north and they have a TON of hair salons and some that are very good for the same price, usually a little less! read more

If you read this as a duplicate it's because I didn't see my original. --Brandy I've been a customer of Atelier Salon for about 2 years. I have long curly hair and if anyone reading this has curly hair too, they know how hard it is to get a GOOD and CONSISTENT haircut.. I moved from Michigan in 2008. I had a "so-so" stylist but she was the best I'd found in years so I stuck with her. I was really worried when I moved to NJ. What was I going to do about finding a stylist. I dreaded the search, foreseeing a long line of terrible haircuts. I researched on line and came up with a couple ideas. There was of course Ouidad in NYC but then I stumbled on another "curly cut" called RiCi. At work, a woman with beautiful hair mentioned to me how her stylist was someone who specifically worked with curly hair. I took a chance and called the salon, it was Atelier in Basking Ridge,NJ. I got my appointment with Nikki and with many nerves, sat in her chair. I told her how bad most of my hair cuts were, how my hair bushes around my round cheeks and is flat on top, how I love it long and I love my curls but they always frizz and fall limp. She told me about RiCi, told me how the cut works, told me what I could expect when all was done. She. Did. Not. LIE! I'll try to post my pic of my 4th hair cut with her. I have no more "BUSHING" around my cheeks. I LOVE MY HAIR. For 2 years now I've had consistent and wonderful haircuts! I live in PA now and I drive 2 hours to go see Nikki and get my hair cut. The price is worth it to me. It is $100 for a RiCi cut/style. BUT you only have to get your hair cut every 3 months (per their advice), so really, the prices work out as reasonable when you break it down. Nikki isn't the only curly head specialist there but this is the ONLY place to get the RiCi cut. If you find it someplace else then they are lying. P.S. They do my color too. Fixed a major 'home -made' mistake I made. Now they color my hair as well. Once, when it didn't go as well as Nikki and I had hoped, I came back in and she fixed me right up.. with a style..for free. read more

I first came here over 15 years ago!!! Started with Paige when she was still doing hair. Paige was amazing. Kind and very talented. She got me looking and, feeling fabulous through two high risk pregnancies. I share something this personal because, not only is Paige, Rick and all the other sassy stylists here are very talented but, they are like family. 15 years later Nikki is my main go to stylist here. She is very very very talented. Nikki goes above and, beyond. Her new assistant Shannon is amazing. She makes sure every detail is in order. Yes this isn't a cheap salon but you get what you pay for... You will leave here glowing with SASSY!!!! Keratin treatments every other month are a must in my book. This country salon is your own private get away for the afternoon. Gourmet snacks, beverages of yummy flavors. Also new hi-tech chairs!! Had to be the least professional place I've ever walked into in my life. At first glance the salon itself is nice, it wasn't until actually sitting down in the stylists chair that you get a feel as to what exactly this salon is about. Wow- what a catty and toxic environment. Within the time it took me to get a wash, cut and blow out I saw not only how nasty the owner Ricky is but also multiple times and MULTIPLE stylists give dirty looks to their own clients. Checking out was the absolute worst. Once you walk over to the register area which is separate and somewhat recluse from the stylists area is where things got really intolerable. The front desk girls were young and seemed to just be learning, she was having some trouble booking the lady before me and her services. That's when the owner, Ricky, came from the back of the salon and rather than speaking to them in an informational and professional way he was EXTREMELY condescending and outright rude. You could tell the girls were uncomfortable and nervous which in turn made everyone standing at the front uncomfortable as well. While waiting to check out not only did I hear him but also another blonde stylist (not sure her name) come to the front and talk negatively about a client STILL IN THE SALON. It seemed as if the customer they were talking about was a regular who came in and comments were made such as "She's batshit crazy" "Can't stand her, never stops talking" "Did you see what she came in wearing?". I was completely baffled. While understand that in the service industry not all customers are easy to deal with, you do not talk about them in front of other customers in fact a professional would keep it to themselves. I could not believe my ears. And as the owner Ricky rather than address his stylists looked over to me winked and said "You'd never wear that" to which I uncomfortably laughed and they proceeded to call the lady insane and crazy. At that point I just wanted to get the hell out of there. Overall I was not unhappy with how my hair turned out however due to the kind of environment and atmosphere in this salon I will not be returning and would never recommend this place to anyone I know. There are far better places in Jersey that know how to treat people kindly and with respect. read more

Elena was great and she should get 5 stars, she nice, did a nice job. HOWEVER, my experience was ruined because of the owner, Ricky. I was shocked when I learned he was the owner. He sat near me and used unprofessional langue (the F- word over and over along with other curse words), he was gossiping about passed co-workers, he even put something in my handbag. Very unprofessional. Then a hairdresser went right near my ear to ask wax a client. It was very loud and I was unable to relax the whole time during my pedi. On their website, Ricky stated "uperior knowledge and professionalism in a comfortable, friendly environment." If you feel cursing is a professional and friendly environment then this is the place for you. I didn't find it either. I found people rude. They walked right into me and gave me dirty looks. I started going to Atelier when I had curly long hair. The cut & care I received was always great! Over past few years I've been going shorter and shorter and now I have a pixie cut. I always walk out of the salon feeling beautiful, the cut is always flattering and my hair just falls into place I don't have to fuss with it when I get home. Only salon that can style my hair curly and i dont have to go home and re-wash and style it. So many people compliment my hair style and color. He does a great job with my color every time, and when i want a blow out, every hair stylist there does an amazing job! I drive 30 minutes to get to this place every time I need to get my hair done. It is SO worth it. I go to Kelly and I won't let anyone else touch my hair. I had a very bad experience at another salon nearby me. I had it colored and a layer literally fried off around the whole circumference of my head AND turned green. Then, I went to another salon to try to fix it and it was even worse. Finally, my Mom's client recommended Atelier. When my Mom called and explained what had happened to my hair, the receptionist was so kind and said that she's seen Kelly make miracles happen! That was the best choice I've ever made! That was about 2 years ago. My hair needed so much work/guidance and Kelly helped! She told me what I needed to do to get it healthy and she took such good care of it. She brought it from a green/grey color back to the blonde I had always had. She stays so in touch with what is in style but she isn't afraid to get creative - Kelly is insanely talented. I came upon Atelier and its team of talented stylists/colorists after some sleuthing on Instagram for a local hair colorist who can pull off the dark violet-red dye I've been wanting for years. After seeing some of Kelly V.'s examples, I immediately made an appointment for my birthday. The staff was incredibly kind and friendly, both over the phone and in-person. The front desk was extremely helpful when discussing my desired hair color and understanding when I ran a few minutes late. Kelly was absolutely wonderful-- she listened to my wants and worries, provided honest tips and advice, and was overall sweet, gentle and funny (trust me, I've had stylists who didn't care if they were too rough with my hair!). The rest of the crew were accommodating, providing drinks and snacks, and kept a fun, welcoming attitude without engaging in any mean gossip. And, best of all, my hair was colored even better than I imagined-- a subtle dark purple with shades of red. Professional for my office job, yet a pop of surprise than my usual dark browns and blacks. It's been a month since I've gotten my hair dyed, and I'm still in love with my hair. Purple is a hard color to maintain, as I was told, but with color-protecting products and a colorwash (all of which Kelly suggested and they sell at the salon), I've been able to keep my hair a noticeable beautiful shade of deep red and plum, something I would have never been able to achieve if I had just done my hair myself at home. Overall, Atelier is a wonderful salon, filled with a talented, friendly, helpful staff. Plus, the building itself is a lovely gem, with rustic stylings. I highly recommend the salon, especially for anyone looking to transform their hair to a new bold shade. Even more, I highly recommend Kelly and her expertise of what I call hair magic. I received literally the best haircut in my entire life here. While their prices are higher than may be the norm, their work is fantastic.

I would also put zero stars if possible. My first two experiences were pleasant and the service was fine. Then on my third visit they had no hot water and did not disclose that before they put the treatment in my hair. The treatment they use burned my scalp and then the freezing ice water was more than I could bear. I couldn't continue the pain so I got up to leave. Upon seeing the owner Ricky and telling him I was very irate - he yelled at me and kicked me out of the salon. It was a humiliating experience, painful and I truly felt bullied. He was mean and nasty and he lied to me about the water issue. Andrea is a lovely person but Ricky is a bully. read more

I went to Atelier based on a recommendation from a friend. It was for my bridal hair. The salon was very nice and the staff were very kind to me. I was able to get an appointment pretty quickly too. The hairdresser was sweet. The owner was rude, disrespectful, and needs a lesson in customer service and good manners. Here's the meat of my experience. I had a specific hairstyle for my wedding. I provided a picture of the hairstyle well in advance of my appointment to the owner. The owner instructed me, through my friend, to ask for this specific hairdresser who could definitely pull the hairstyle off. So, I booked my bridal trial. While I appreciate the hairdresser's attempts at the hairstyle, she unfortunately could not pull it off. During the trial, she asked others for their opinion (which was kind of her for effort, but makes me wonder why the owner instructed me to ask for her, specifically). At the end of the trial, we had an action plan: another way to start off the hairstyle to ensure that it would last. Knowing that they could not pull it off, they gave me a second trial for free. I came a week later for the second trial, and did everything instructed of me (e.g., do not wash my hair for at least a day prior and to use normal amounts/kinds of product in my hair). We went per our action plan, and the hairdresser purchased a specific wand that was needed for the hairstyle, and even tested it out on a dummy head before my second trial. Again, I applaud her efforts. The hairstyle was successful, in that it looked very similar to the picture that I had provided. I was satisfied walking out of the salon, gave a big tip to the hairdresser, but by the time I made it to my car the whole hairstyle fell apart- all that was left was complete frizziness and no solid look. I called the salon next-day, spoke with the hairdresser, and explained what happened, and how I am concerned with the ability of the hairstyle to keep together for my summer wedding (first day of summer, longest summer day of the year). She insisted that it would last, and things would be different the day-of. I explained that while I would like to trust her, I would do so only if I had known that the hairstyle could have lasted an hour- but to fall apart within minutes makes me concerned. I mean, it's my wedding day! I'll be dancing, sweating, hugging, etc... I explained that another trial would help to reassure me. She had to check with the manager. I received a message informing me that I would need to pay for another trial. I called the salon back and asked to speak with the manager. The lady at the front desk told me that the manager was not there at the time, but was very clear that I would need to pay for another trial. I insisted to speak with the manager, and she agreed to have the manager call me back. The manager did so, with the owner also on the line. I explained my situation, and very kindly explained how much I appreciated the efforts of the hairdresser, but that we have yet been able to pull off the hairstyle. The owner said that it was simple- if I wanted another trial, I would have to pay another $80. I reminded him that I shared a picture of my hairstyle and specifically asked whether it could be done, and I was told that it could. I also reminded him that it was for my wedding that was only a few weeks away, and that I would still want myself and bridal party to work with the salon for the wedding day. He said that I'd still have to pay and "what do you think happens at these bridal hair trials, anyway?". Well, I expect that the trial is run in the same way it would be on the most important day of someone's life, and that maybe there will be differences with some "fine tuning" here and there, but that I would expect a hairstyle to last more than just 5 minutes after it's complete. Note that another review on YELP has the same complaint. He became extremely RUDE, aggressive, and insistent that I pay or get no other trial. He acted this way despite my normal behavior on the phone (my job makes me act and speak without emotion in the way). It is ridiculous that the OWNER of a salon speaks to a client- a bride, with a WEDDING and bridal party coming their way for a lot of cash, I might add. I told him- again- that I appreciate the efforts of his staff- but I will be taking my business elsewhere. Like a child, he said, "Fine by me!". At some point, he went on to say "good luck" finding another salon. I worked with the manager to get my bridal party deposit back, which I was able to get back next-day. See what I mean- the staff is great. I struggled finding another salon within 2 weeks from my wedding day. The salon I did fine charged me TONS. I'm glad that the wedding is over. My recommendation to all who read this is the following: Do NOT trust this salon with your big day- whether it's your wedding day or date night with your hubby. And, encourage the owner to take a lesson in customer service. read more

I just had the most fabulous salon experience at Atelier! For my birthday, my girls scheduled me for a blow out with Amanda. I have to say just the shampoo "experience" rivaled the best of the best massages I've ever received. If I could, I would schedule this weekly (okay daily!) It was not only completely relaxing, but I would venture to say, even therapeutic. Amanda is amazing and my hair looks so shiny and healthy! Rickie styled my hair during my first visit to this salon just a few weeks ago and I have had everyone from friends and family to people I've never met before come up and compliment my hair. This is a salon that is fairly priced, with outstanding service and technical ability, in a busy yet very personalized atmosphere. I am a fan! read more

If you are happy with your current hairstyle and you need a trim, DO NOT GO HERE, esp to Ricky, I HAD an awesome all one length blunt cut and simply just needed a trim. Yes, just a trim. I told the owner, Ricky, that all I needed was a trim. I showed him a picture of my own hair in a picture, so he would know what to do. Aloof and not connected to client's needs. What a mistake I made to come to this guy, he completely ignored the picture I showed him and how I wanted my trim. He completely cut layers into my hair and all around my face! The next morning after the trim I kept looking at my hair trying to figure out what happened, well he macheted layers into my hair - well and what does he care - he's bald and it's not his hair...I finally put this review in - it's going to be another few months before my own style is back :-(. I curse this guy everyday when I'm getting ready for the day, I'll stop doing that once my style is back...patiently waiting for hair growth.... I hope this helps!
