Beautiful cafe in Highland Park. I had the cafe miel that came with honey and cinnamon. It's a very large space with plenty of seating. They are dog friendly. A dog came in with their human while we were waiting for our drinks, and I noticed dog hair on the floor where we were sitting. read more

Tucked away in a cute row of eclectic shops just east of the Metra station is Astra. A good sized space with plenty of room to hang with your people. The service is fast and friendly, and the product quality is surprisingly good. We have been back several times for the chai latte. I will echo another comment I saw that the tables/floors/chairs looked like they need to be kept up with in regards to cleaning, I did note that while I was waiting for my order. We were looking for a caffeine fix, so we decided to give Astra Coffee Roasters a try. They have espresso, hot and ice drinks, house specialties, as well as seasonal features. The ambiance is rustic and old-style themed. A lot of woody vibes all around. I ordered an almond milk latte. I was surprised to see the look was good but taste was a bit dark and too much. The beans were good but tasted burnt. The notes of the coffee were not as sweet as I had thought they would be. Overall, the latte was smooth and velvety but lacked in taste. It's been redecorated and looks like a charming botanical garden room, with lots of windows and comfy velvet armchairs and seating. A dog friendly coffee shop located in Highland Park! A great place to visit during the winter months with your pooch. And definitely a cute coffee date spot. The shop is very spacious, friendly staff, and even has a kids table. I ordered a Matcha Latte on a rainy afternoon. The Matcha was flavorful and wasn't too sweet. (Some coffee shops makes their Matcha Latte too sweet and it just feels like you're drinking sweetened milk). Highly recommend trying out their bakery goods! I got a chocolate crossiant to eat with my latte. The croissant was rich in flavor and very fresh. There was chocolate in every bite! Some of their popular pastries tend to sell out in the morning. Incredible! This recent addition to the north shore is the definition of a hidden gem! Kristin and her staff are the absolute sweetest and take the time to offer and listen to what you like and don't like when they make recommendations. I had the opportunity to try two different drinks, the first is the salted caramel latte... it's just as good as it sounds! But my favorite is their pumpkin chai latte! DELICIOUS! When walking into the coffee shop, there is plenty of seating and it feels welcoming and homey! They roast their own beans, and one of my favorite details is that they share local artists artwork on the walls! Along with supporting local bakeries for their pastries. Has good prices even though it's in a fancy neighborhood. They also have certain but not vegan friendly pastries. Came in for a jolt, of coffee. It's a pretty comfortable place with some couches inside. Those wanting to go outside can sit on the nice patio. It's about $3 for a latte. They have a few non dairy milks including macadamia. Also they roast their own beans. They also sell these in bags so you can make it later. Good place for a morning boost. It doesn't take long to get a cup. This coffee shop is a must check out!!!!! It's a brand new business in Highland Park and the minute you walk in you feel the warmth! It's a beautiful space with local artists work on the wall for sale. The coffee bar is large and everything is nicely displayed. I got the cafe miel latte, and it was absolutely delicious! I also got a glazed donut. The latte art was gorgeous too. I learned they roast their own beans in house too which is special! I got to meet the owner, Kristen, and she was so nice! She welcomed me to the shop which felt nice to know who is behind this whole space. I also came to help be apart of Yelp's "Thank You Thursday" which felt nice to thank the small businesses for everything they do! Never heard of Caramel Turtle latte (Nutella, caramel, and praline), so I picked it to try out as my first drink. While the turtle flavor didn't come through noticeably, I thought this drink was still very well made, had the right balance of nutty flavor and sweetness. Would definitely order again. Nothing special. Seemed like the new staff member was more interested in getting back to their computer in back than in serving me. The drip coffee wasn't horrible but it was far from good. The pumpkin chai was overly sweet. The tables and floors looked like they needed a really good cleaning. I stopped in on a gloomy Saturday morning and picked up a chai latte. The restaurant is large but doesn't have a ton of seating. Which for me is ok since I really only grab something to go. Wish I could say there has beer improvement since my last review. The coffee is still good, however, we asked that my husband's espresso was made after my latte so that his didn't get cold while waiting on mine but that was ignored. Astra is a solid coffee shop in the northern suburbs and I'm so glad to have found it. I've been three times so far and really enjoyed my coffee I've gotten here. The latte art was on point all times which impressed me especially since it's hard to find coffee shops in the suburbs that have baristas able to do latte art. I've tried the Cinnamon Maple Vanilla latte, Cafe Miel, and a cold brew. So far my favor was the cinnamon maple vanilla. All were good but that stood out to me the most. It was well balanced, sweet but not overly sweet. I've also tried some of their pastries. I'd say skip the scone - it was hard and dry. However their cookies were delicious! I tried both the buckeye and the oatmeal chip cookie and both were fantastic. The only con of Astra I'd say is the decor and ambiance. The coffee shop has a large space with lots of windows but the ambiance isn't very cozy. The lighting inside is a bit harsh, the chairs look like plastic chairs from elementary school, and the space could benefit from some greenery or something to lighten up the place. I will definitely be back regularly here since it's the closest solid coffee shop to me! Can't wait to try more of their coffee options! read more

I'm so glad to have found this little gem! Parking was easy as there's tons of street parking all around. I ordered a caramel turtle latte and a chocolate donut which were both delicious. The latte had Nutella in it, enough said :) The cutest little feature is their puppy picture wall which shows all the doggies that have come for treats. What a cute (and pet friendly) place! Stopped in on Saturday morning and it was pretty quiet. Staff was nice. Very cute shop! Tables & couches. Doggies are welcome! I got a latte. The flavor was nice and smooth. I did ask for easy foam but don't think the girl making it heard. I got a blueberry scone as the one in the front of the display was awesome looking, full of blueberries but I got one with only couple blueberries so it was pretty dry & flavorless. My sig other got a donut & loved it so he got me one & got himself a chocolate croissant, which he said was good but the chocolate was all to one side (the third top portion). Like its name suggests, Astra is stratospherically good (and everyone is so nice!) A near daily obsession for us.

Aw, I so wanted to like this place...but I wonder how you actually open a coffee roastery/cafe with this model. Go in, ask for a pour-over, which they HAVE, but the girl tells me (with maybe two other folks in the place) that they take twenty minutes...which of course, they do not, and should not, and what is that about. So I get an americano...a watered-down, weak Americano, so I ask for an extra shot, and get, sort of...that is, she pours half a shot glass into my drink (which she'd filled up absolutely to the brim, so it's pouring out all over) and asks what I want to do with the other shot--by which she means other half of a shot glass, which lets me know that a) she think a shot of espresso is actually two shots, and b) she is not really all there because then I'm going to take my scalding, overflowing americano along with a dixie cup with a thimble full of espresso out the door...what is happening? The beans they have, all 6 sad bags, do not smell good, and the coffee is not good. There are no napkins...on and on...They need a consultant or someone to come in and get them squared away. GREAT location, but they need to fix things like sharpish. read more

Another one where I I wish I could give it 3 1/2 stars. Their menu is ridiculously large for coffee. It is literally a page long normally that's a good thing, but for me who's indecisive, it gave me too many choices. That has no impact on my stars, The coffee itself was good, but considering they roasted themselves, I thought it would taste a little bit more full bodied. I also got a doughnut, which was just OK. Here's what you need to know: love the new cafe in Ravinia. The star of the show is the terrific house-roasted coffee. They have some fantastic high quality peaberry beans that are perfectly roasted to a medium / light-medium. Cortados are my favorite espresso drink here with luxurious cream and foam to boot. Owner Kristin is fantastic and amazingly customer focused. Such a joy to interact with and amazing roasting ability / skill. The pastry is from Bennison's in Evanston, and is well crafted stuff. All the employees are delightful and have been well trained (miracle to even find a good team in these insanely trying staff shortage times). They also sell a variety of their house-toasted beans to go in 8 and 12 oz bags. Coffees are served in 8, 12, and 16 oz cups and the cups and carry out bags are beautiful and well appointed. Everything is well priced (even reasonable given the neighborhood) and has a luxe look and feel. Be advised that Weekends get busy so your croissant/ pastry option may be sold out. I'm thrilled to have this new coffee shop in our neighborhood and hope to see them flourish for years to come. read more

I accompanied my wife to a Trunk Show on Roger Williams Avenue two weeks ago and, after a brief time at the Show, I decided to tour the area in search of coffee while she stayed behind. I came across Astra, entered and was greeted by Ryan, who proceeded to make me an awesome Americano (I had never had one) and waited for my wife to show up. It was so nice to, on a spur of the moment, find a friendly place to hang out for a while. Ryan was engaging and we had a good conversation about one of his tatoos, which I found fascinating.
